THINGS TO DO IN ATHABASCA:

TOWN OF ATHABASCAGATEWAY TO THE NEW NORTH

ATHABASCA COUNTRYPopulation – The Athabasca region has been experiencing growthattributed to industrial development over the last several years. It hasalso become a housing hotbed, attracting workers from Alberta’s EnergyCorridor as an alternative to city living, and an opportunity to choosecountry and lakefront living. According to the 2008 Census, 10,321people live within Athabasca County’s 6,126km2.

Geography – A mix of boreal and flatland, the Athabasca Regionhas its history shaped by the influence of the Athabasca River. From thesouth, near Nestow, the watershed direction of flow changes from southto north. This means that water from the North Saskatchewan Riverflows east to the Atlantic Ocean and water from the Athabasca Riverflows north to the Arctic Ocean. The 55th parallel runs in betweenGrassland and Wandering River.

Weather & Daylight – The region receives an annual averageprecipitation of 382mm of rain and 122cm of snow per annum. On theJune solstice, the region receives 17hrs and 23 minutes of daylightcompared to the December solstice which only receives 7hrs and 18minutes of daylight.

Industry – As diverse asthe people who call this regionhome, the Athabasca Countryis home to forestry, agriculture, oil and gas development.Major employers includeAlberta-Pacific ForestIndustries, Millar WesternForest Products, AthabascaUniversity and numerous oiland gas service companies.

Those of us who have spent time inAthabasca know that it is an exceptionalplace, nestled in the heart of a regionthat is among the most exquisite inCanada. From the majestic river runningthrough the county, to the pristine forestsalong its shores; the beauty of this regionbegins with its landscapes, but extends toits people, its events, its communities, and the quality of life that can be foundhere. Athabasca Region is dynamic, diverse, and thriving; and I invite you tovisit us, and discover for yourself whatmakes Northern Alberta such aremarkable destination!

When the boys come out from Lac Labiche in the lure of the early Spring,To take the pay of the "Hudson's Bay," as their fathers did before,They are all a-glee for the jamboree, and they make the Landing ringWith a whoop and a whirl, and a "Grab your girl", and a rip and a skip and a roar. And here they must make the longportage, and the boys sweat in the sun;And they heft and pack, and they hauland track, and each must do his trick; But their thoughts are far in theLanding bar, where the founts of nectar run:And no man thinks of such gorgeousDrinks as that Athabaska Dick.
