MISSION STATEMENTThe Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens promote the Gardens as a unique resource for

understanding and enjoying nature, horticulture, recreation and the environment. Through sponsorship of programs emphasizing education, the arts and the Gardens as a living museum, the Friends

endeavor to preserve and enhance the natural and historical assets of the Gardens for its visitors.

The Gift Shop at Boerner, operated by the Friends, is dedicated to offering items that are environmentally supportive and carry the GREEN message.

Featured is the work of local artists, a wide array of horticulture books and gardening related products for adults and children.

Development Overview

These results are due to an increase in our education and outreach programming revenues and the very generous support from our Board of Directors, Friends Membership, private and corporate foundations and corporate sponsorships.

In 2008, we served over 16,000 children and adults in our education programs. Our programs are developed to focus on the child, the adult and the family.

Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens memberships are a vital element in our success and represent 11.5% of our operating income.

One Garden Friend membership enables 9 children to experience our plant science programs:

Plant Hope (3rd grade) an annual program for Milwaukee Public Schools, conducted during the school year, consisting of 4 sessions: 2 in the classroom, 2 in the gardens.

Plant Science (K > 6th grade)developed as an enhancement for science classes in accordance with WI State standards for Science education.

Growing Gardeners (ages 3-6) gives parents and their children the opportunity to learn together; included are hands on activities such as actual planting and learning to be environmentally responsible (recycling, composting, use of natural materials).

Summer programs (ages 5-12) welcomes day care centers, summer school groups, day camps and Milwaukee Moms to the gardens where they experience one on one learning in the gardens.

SEEDS

Within our organization is an extraordinary group of philanthropists known as SEEDS, Supporters of Education, the Environment and Developmental Strides. Gifts begin at $1,000.

This annual support insures that the Friends realize their mission, which focuses on education, for children and adults, community awareness and engagement and environmental preservation.

Our extensive education program brings plant knowledge and enjoyment to over 200,000 visitors each year.

SEEDS gifts also play a vital role in sustaining and enhancing the gardens themselves.

We thank all of our supporters for their continuous support. It is this invaluable investment that insures the continuation of the very rich community resource that is the Boerner Botanical Gardens.

EducationIn 2008, our programs engaged learners of all ages and backgroundsthrough hands-on, interactive experiences with plant and environmentalscience and nature.

Children’s Horticulture EducationThe Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens delivered plant-based educational programs to over 13,000 school students and youth in grades Pre-K through 6th.

Plant HopeOur Plant Hope Program, now in its third school year cycle, was created to provide full scholarship and transportation for over 300 deserving Milwaukee Public School students. The students were immersed in this exceptional plant science program that engaged them in a unique learning experience that took place in their classrooms as well as in the Garden.

As a result of funding provided by the Melitta Pick Charitable Trust, the Bert L. and Patricia S. Steigleder Charitable Trust, the Service Club of Milwaukee, the Charles D. Ortgiesen Foundation and the Evan and Marion Helfaer Foundation, the program continues to flourish. Students from Ben Franklin Elementary, Bruce Guadalupe School, Carson Academy of Science, Congress Elementary, Humboldt Park Elementary, and Rogers Street Academy have benefited from the generosity of these esteemed donors.

Adult EducationOur Adult Education program continued to grow with more than 60 classes, reaching over 650 adults. The classes were conducted in six different categories and were designed to appeal to a variety of interests and skill levels, including beginning gardening, landscape design seminars, floral arranging, and craft workshops.

Our Adult Education course offerings, Wednesday Evening Garden Walks and Garden Trends Symposium exceeded attendance expectations and drew capacity crowds.

Outreach EventsThe Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens believe that creating a better world starts with education. The Friends’ outreach initiatives touch the lives of people in our communities…both children and adults.

In Celebration of Trees, April 19th and 20thCombined with the efforts of Milwaukee County Parks, Friends of Wehr Nature Center, University of Wisconsin-Extension and Master Gardener volunteers, the Friends hosted this family event in honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day. The weekend featured guided nature hikes, family activities and entertainment, adult education presentations, demonstrations, and information booths.

No Child Left Inside Walk-a-thon, September 27thThe Friends hosted a walk-a-thon to raise awareness for the “No Child Left Inside” movement, and encouraged children and their families to spend quality time outdoors enjoying nature. Outdoor fun and a 5K walk through the Gardens and Whitnall Park raised funds for Children’s Horticulture Education.

Santa Event, December 7thPartnering with Bartolotta Catering for their Holiday Gingerbread Brunch, the Friends offered holiday activities for children and families, including crafts, storytime and a chance to take pictures with Santa himself!
