and the need for healthy exercise opportunities
discussed the idea/concept. These citizens included -

H ow did it start?A couple of the concerned citizens attended a DCNRTrails Summit and learned what other organizations
and communities were doing.
They learned that Gettysburg could get help from TheRivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Programof the National Park Service (NPS).
The concerned citizens applied for NPS assistancewith a letter from Gettysburg Borough Council.

H ow did it start?The NPS provided a community planner to work withH ABPI and the Gettysburg Borough on the project.
A steering committee was formed to analyze the needfor a trail/route, to find a desired ³alignment´, and toguide a feasibility study. Several communityorganizations were represented on the committee.
Gettysburg Borough Council was a strong participantand supporter.
Steering committee meetings focused first on key
destinations and tar et audiences.
