About Gettysburg CollegeGettysburg College was chartered in 1832 during a time in which most of the nation’s strongest liberal arts colleges were established. It is located on the famous Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg, Pa., and has played a major role in American history.

Currently ranked among the best liberal arts colleges in the United States, Gettysburg College is com-mitted to preparing nearly 2,600 students from more than 40 states and 35 foreign countries for the opportunities of a changing world. Students may choose from 37 majors, pursue interdisciplinary and self-de-signed majors, or complete one of several cooperative and dual-degree programs.

Special programs are also offered in study abroad, Wash-ington semester (government and politics, economics, foreign policy and many others) and United Nations semester. Dual-de-gree programs are offered in such areas as engineering, nursing and environmental studies.

The 200-acre campus is 36 miles from Harrisburg, 54 from Baltimore, 72 from Washington, D.C., 117 from Philadelphia and 212 from New York City.

Student-faculty ratio is 11:1. There are 192 full-time faculty members, 92 percent of whom have earned a doctorate or the highest degree in their respec-tive field.

An abundance of activities are available to Gettysburg stu-dents. A social council sponsors a diverse schedule of events. There are 10 men’s national fraternities and six women’s na-tional sororities. There is a full schedule of lectures and concerts featuring nationally-known speakers and performers.

Financial AidAlthough higher education is expensive, 67 percent of the

student body at Gettysburg received college aid for 2006-07, including 483 first-year students. Maximum first-year student aid (including scholarships, grants, loans and work-study) is $43,577, with an average of $24,487. Students applying for financial aid must complete the PROFILE and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 15.

Nearly 1,300 students, or 50 percent of the student body, hold campus jobs. College work-study is available on campus, and jobs are also available in the community.

AthleticsGettysburg College offers 12 varsity sports for men and 12 for women. It is an NCAA Division III institution and competes in the Centennial Conference (CC) as well as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Gettysburg is the only college in the CC with 13 full-time head coaches. There are also two part-time head coaches, a total of 20 assistant coaches (full and part-time) and six interns. Three athletic trainers, as well as a team physician and an orthopedic surgeon attend to the medical needs of Gettysburg athletes.

Centennial ConferenceGettysburg College is a charter member of the Centennial Conference. The conference became official on April 29, 1992, when 11 college and university presidents agreed to a mission of purpose formalizing the all-sports con-ference. Ten of the charter members had held membership in the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference (MAC) since that conference’s origin in 1912.

Members of the Centennial Conference are Bryn Mawr College, Dickinson College, Franklin & Marshall College, Get-tysburg College, Haverford College, Johns Hopkins University, McDaniel College, Muhlenberg College, Swarthmore College, Ursinus College and Washington College.

Gettysburg teams have enjoyed unprecedented success in the first 14 years of the Centennial Conference, having won more CC team championships than any other institution. Gettysburg teams and athletes have also been prominent at the national level in recent years.

FacilitiesGettysburg’s athletic facili-ties are regarded as among the finest in Division III. They consist of a 6,176-seat stadium with a state-of-the-art artificial surface for football, lacrosse and track and field, a brand-new, lighted soccer complex (also with an artificial sur-face), and an indoor sports complex which houses a 3,000-seat basketball, wrestling and volleyball area, four indoor tennis courts, a 1/11-mile indoor track, a first-class weight room and outstanding training facilities.

There are new outdoor facilities for baseball, softball, wom-en’s lacrosse and field hockey, as well as 14 refurbished tennis courts. A scenic cross country course incorporates the campus and adjacent battlefield.

Plans have also been finalized for the construction of a new Center for Athletics, Recreation and Fitness, due to break ground in May 2008.

HANK JANCZYKHead CoachHobart ’7621st Season at Gettysburg———————————————One of the most successful lacrosse coaches in NCAA history, Hank Janczyk will take to the sidelines for his 21st season at the helm of the Gettysburg College men’s lacrosse team in 2008.

With a career record of 297-91 (252-67 at Gettysburg), Janczyk ranks second in career

victories among all active Division III men’s lacrosse coaches, and he is third among all current NCAA men’s lacrosse coaches (all divisions).

During his tenure, the 1976 graduate of Hobart College has guided the Bullets to 15 conference titles. Under Janczyk, Gettysburg has made 17 appearances in the NCAA Division III playoffs – a feat that has been accomplished by just four other Division III schools.

Six of Janczyk’s teams have reached the national semifinals, with his 2001 and 2002 squads making it to the championship game. Every one of his Bullet squads has finished with a winning record.

Janczyk’s 2001 Bullets set school records for consecutive victories (14) and wins in a season (16) en route to the program’s first-ever national title game appearance. As a result, he earned the 2001 Babe Kraus Award as the Division III Coach of the Year, an honor he first won in 1984 at Salisbury State University. On April 7, 2001, he earned his 200th career coaching victory with a 14-10 win over Western Maryland.

The following year, the Bullets again broke the program record for victories in a season (17) and ascended to No. 1 in the national rankings for the third time in four years. Janczyk’s 2006 team tied the single-season school record for wins, finishing 17-2.

years. As a player, Pearce was a two-time All-American and in 2001 was

The Chestertown, Md., native helped the Bullets win four consecutive conference titles, and as a team captain in 2001, guided Gettysburg to its first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III national championship game.

In 2007, Janczyk picked up his 250th career win at Gettysburg when the Bullets knocked off Washington (Md.) College 11-4 in the Centennial Conference championship game to capture their fourth-straight conference title and their 11th since 1994.

At Hobart, Janczyk earned three varsity letters as a defenseman on the lacrosse team. He played on a pair of NCAA Division III runners-up and captained Hobart’s 1976 national championship squad.

Bullets Aim for Championship SeasonComing off another banner season, the Get-tysburg College men’s lacrosse team enters the 2008 season with high hopes as the program celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The Bullets, who won their fourth-straight Centennial Conference title and reached the NCAA Division III semifinals in 2007, will feel the loss of five all-Americans, including four-time all-America goalie Pat Vaughan ’07. However, 21st-year Head Coach Hank Janczyk’s squad features a deep and talented group of players at nearly every position. Included in that number are 18 letterwinners, five starters, and three all-Americans from the 2007 campaign.

That depth has not gone unnoticed, as the Bul-lets have been tabbed as one of the top teams in Division III in the preseason once again. After finishing as the No. 2-ranked team in 2007, Gettysburg has been ranked No. 2 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Associa-tion (USILA) and Lacrosse Magazine preseason polls while picking up a No. 4 ranking by Face-Off Yearbook. The Bullets were also picked to finish first in the Centennial Conference Preseason Poll.

One of the areas in which Gettysburg figures to have the most depth is on the attack, where the Bullets return all three starters from a year ago in senior Trip Dyer, sophomore Joe Brody, and junior Zach Pucci. Offensively, Gettysburg brings back four of its top five scorers and five players who scored 10 or more goals from last season.

Dyer returns after leading the team in scoring with 51 points on 31 goals and a team-high 20 assists on his way to earning honorable men-tion all-America recognition. He is a Face-Off Yearbook First Team Preseason All-American this year. Brody heated up late in the season to finish with a team-leading 36 goals, including 18 over an amazing five-game stretch. Despite playing injured for much of the season, Pucci netted 31 points on 16 goals and 15 assists.

A number of players will provide additional options up front, including junior Danny Collura, who scored nine goals while mak-ing five starts in 2007, and sophomore Kjael Skaalerud, who Janczyk describes as “much-improved.” Also, freshman Chris Cahill and sophomore Josh Reichert are two players who could see immediate playing time.

Also contributing to the offense will be mid-fielders Ben Sufrin, Rob Triplett and Kyle McGrath. Sufrin, a senior, racked up 54 points

on 28 goals and 15 assists last season while earn-ing honorable mention all-America honors. Triplett, a junior, recorded 11 goals and nine assists in 2007 while McGrath, a sophomore, had eight goals and seven assists.

Adding additional punch to the midfield will be senior Jared Harriman, who did not play in 2007 but was a second-team all-American in 2006, when he was second among the Bullets with 37 goals. Junior Drew Duckworth will also move to the midfield after scoring 11 points as an attackman last season. Tom O’Donnell is coming off a six-goal campaign while Alex White returns after missing the season with a medical redshirt. Freshmen Ben Engleman and Andrew Ryan will also battle for minutes.

Defensively, the Bullets face the challenge of replacing three all-Americans in John Fairhurst ’07, Steve Hurst ’07, and Vaughan. However, a number of players return on a unit that tied for first in Division III in scoring defense (5.00 gpg).

In the defensive midfield, junior Tommy Ke-hoe returns after a stellar sophomore campaign in which he earned First Team All-Centennial Conference honors. He is a Preseason First-Team All-American, as selected by Face-off Yearbook. Among the players who will also look for at the position include sophomore Jason Bartee and freshman Kevin Gildea.

Returning to anchor the back row will be senior defenseman Andrew McGann, a first

team all-America defenseman who was also tabbed a Preseason First Team All-American by Faceoff Yearbook. “For my money, I don’t know if there’s a better defenseman in the country,” praised Janczyk.

The Bullets defense will also receive a boost from the return of junior Yanni Peary, who did not play in 2007 but started eight games in 2006. In addition, sophomore Tim Kurpis is expected to see significant playing time, as is freshman Andrew Coskey.

Between the pipes, Gettysburg finds itself in the unique position of having four junior goalkeep-ers in Paul Collura, Charles Floeckher, Zach-ary Furshman, and John Gilfillan. Furshman, Collura and Gilfillan have all served as back-ups to Vaughan in each of the past two seasons while Floeckher is a transfer from Kenyon College, where he put together an 11-4 record as a sophomore in 2006 before taking off last season. Freshman Brad Zanoni gives the Bullets yet another option in the net.

Gettysburg must also replace its primary face-off specialist due to the graduation of Jimmy Gates ’07, who took 337 of the team’s 367 face-offs. The duty could be handled by committee for the Bullets this season, with Gildea, McGrath, junior Tim Stanton, and freshman Matt Griffo all potential candidates to fill the position.

Once again, the Bullets will face an extremely challenging schedule, which features four op-ponents who competed in the NCAA Division III Tournament last season in Denison, Ohio Wesleyan, Cabrini, and defending national champion Salisbury. In addition, Gettysburg’s schedule includes two Centennial Confer-ence opponents (No. 11 Washington, No. 19 Haverford) who have been ranked in the USILA Preseason Poll.

Trip Dyer is one of three returning all-Ameri-cans for the Bullets.
