The GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’sClub is putting the word out that it is seek-ing donations for the annual Woman’s ClubFlea Market at the Old Lutz School.

The annual sale is a great way for peopleto clear out closets, attics, garages, patios andsheds — and to help good causes at thesame time, according to Pat Serio, co-chair-woman of the flea market.

While residents can clear some of their

clutter — others can benefit from a bargain,Serio said, noting the items at the flea mar-ket are priced to sell quickly.

“We have the best prices,” Serio said.As always, the flea market will feature a

wide range of goods. There will be items forthe home, such as linens, lamps, china, andpots and pans.

Big pieces of furniture will be undertents outdoors, and plants will be sold, too,Serio said.

There also will be a room called Trinketsand Treasures that will feature higher quality

and higher priced items, Serio said.In previous years, the club has had a half-

price sale the weekend after the fleamarket, but has decided not to do so thisyear, Serio said. Any items that are left overafter the flea market will be distributed to avariety of charitable organizations, she said.

Putting on the flea market is a big proj-ect, Serio noted.

A pivotal moment during the celebrationof the Catholic Mass occurs during com-munion, when believers come forward toreceive the Body of Christ.

But some members of Our Lady of theRosary were choosing to stay in their pews,because they have Celiac disease, whichmeans they cannot ingest gluten, aprotein found in wheat.

“There are different levelsof intolerance to gluten andwheat products,” said theRev. Ron Aubin, pastor atOur Lady of the RosaryChurch at 2348Collier Parkway inLand O’ Lakes.“Apparently, somepeople react severe-ly and can be quitesick. So, they bypassthe host — receivingthe Body of Christ.”

When one womanasked if there anythingthe church could doabout it, the church decid-ed to look into the issue.

Church doctrine re-quires there be at least atrace of gluten, in orderto be considered validmatter for the Eucharist,according to theNational Conference of

Catholic Bishops.“So, we did a little research and we dis-

covered there are low-gluten hosts,” Aubinsaid.

The church is now using low-glutenwafers made by the Benedictine Sisters ofPerpetual Adoration, in Clyde, Missouri.The sisters have been baking communion

hosts for generations and spent 10 yearsworking to develop a low-gluten host.

The host the sisters produce contains .01percent gluten.

Our Lady of the Rosary began servingthe hosts about a month ago.

“What we did, was, we have reservedone small part of the church — a small sec-tion. We’re calling that our low-glutensection,” Aubin said.

Land O’ Lakes High School has nice foot-ball and baseball fields. But if you go pastthem, you might see something unusual.

Like a barn with livestock, and studentstraining them.

“People think we’re crazy,” said sopho-more Augusta Browder. “They think we’rejust out there rolling around with them (theanimals). They don’t think we’re being seri-ous about it.”

But they’re not being crazy; they’re beingcompetitive. The school’s members ofFuture Farmers of America, now known asthe National FFA Organization, are preppingtheir livestock to be judged along withother animals at the Florida State Fair andPasco County Fair next month and othercompetitions throughout the year.

Some of the animals stay on school prop-erty. Other students own their animals andhave homes that can maintain them, so theylive on their land.

But wherever they stay, caring for themis hard work.

Browder gets up around 5:30 a.m., everymorning, to feed her animals at her home,and does it again at the end of the evening.She can’t take extended time off, and shealso has to practice with them so they’ll per-form well when the time comes to bejudged in categories such as appearance and

If you see Charlie Griffiths riding his bi-cycle in Zephyrhills, the 70-year-old mightbe on a little ride just to keep the bloodpumping.

Or he just might be training for a 40Krace.

“Charlie’s always been a cyclist,” said hiswife, Mary Griffiths. The couple actuallymet online a few years ago on a specialwebsite for fitness-conscious singles. NowMary, 63, does a bit of riding herself: Bothof them won cycling medals at the recentFlorida International Senior Games andState Championships in their respectiveage groups.

But while Mary has been more of aswimmer and even did some scuba diving,Charlie is the one who’s always preferredcycling. He joined a racing club at 16 in hisnative Liverpool, England, but had to give itup when family demands came first.

Later in life he got back into riding, andwhen he retired and moved to Florida 10years ago, he saw an advertisement forlocal races. Being in good shape, he decid-ed to join the 55-and-over age group andsigned up for a race.

He finished last.“They just killed me. I couldn’t believe

what level these people were at in that agegroup,” Charlie recalled.

Not being one to back down from achallenge, he kept at it and eventuallyworked his way into the top half of thecompetitors. He began training regularlyand improved his strength and skills. In ad-dition to doing 20K and 40K road races atthe Senior Games, Charlie also tacklesother races, including 100-mile cyclingevents.

As a result, their living room is nowfilled with medals and trophies document-ing his successful return to the sport heloved as a boy. But it’s the other rewardsthat motivate him to keep riding.

“Really, what keeps me going with this,is it’s keeping me from getting old,” Charliesaid. Seventy was old 40 years ago, but Idon’t feel any different.”

While they’ve both found success cy-cling, Mary is quick to point out that it’snot any one activity that holds a secret tofeeling younger. It’s more about findingsomething you like to do and stickingwith it.

“It’s activity,” she said. “Find somethingthat you’re passionate about and you do it.”Some activities lend themselves to groupparticipation, she said. Runners, for exam-ple, often go out together and keep eachother motivated.

Even physical disabilities don’t have tokeep seniors from staying active. TheSenior Games also has competitions for ac-tivities like bean bag tossing and tabletennis. Mary believes that even participat-ing in non-strenuous games, which stillchallenge them mentally, can be good forseniors.

“They’ve got 40 different sports,” shesaid of the Senior Games. “What if youaren’t really physically able? That doesn’tmean you shouldn’t be active.”

And Charlie agrees. He’d love to seemore people out walking around, even in acasual setting. It’s become too common forseniors, and people in general, to settle intoa sedentary lifestyle and miss out on thehealth, social and mental benefits of beingmore active.

“You look around these (communities)where we are here and it’s just incrediblehow people waste away. And some of themare younger than me,” he said. “It’s just away of extending you’re life. That’s the wayI see it. Stay active as long as you can.”

Charlie is encouraged by people whocall him an inspiration, and he enjoys ridingand keeping up with riders many years hisjunior. Neither has any plans to slow downor abandon their active lifestyle, and theyhope people of all ages will find the moti-vation to begin improving their own liveswith a little bit of activity.

“Find a friend, and set an appointmenttime and commit to meeting at that timeevery day and start walking,” Mary advises.“That’s the easiest thing, it doesn’t cost any-thing and if you did it, you don’t knowwhat the next step will be.”

While the benefits can be realized byanyone, Charlie believes a lack of activitycan especially hurt seniors who can’t affordto sit around and watch their golden yearsgo by.

“If you’re used to a lethargic lifestyle,you need to change. When you’re younger,maybe people don’t feel it as badly. But lifeflashes by, and suddenly you are a potato,”he said. “Just get out and do something,whether it be walking, running; make theattempt. Make the effort and you’ll enjoy it.You’ll meet so many interesting people.”

The Suncoast Arts Fest, Inc., drew arecord crowd at its two-day event at TheShops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel.

The festival — celebrating its 10th an-niversary — enjoyed beautiful weather, andart lovers had a chance to enjoy the works

of more than 100 fine artists and craftsmen.The event drew both new artists and re-

turning artists from all over the country,according to organizers.

It also featured entertainment rangingfrom jazz to blues and indie to Latin music.

The program gives people a chance tolearn how the county’s budget is developed,how the public organization is structured,the ins and outs of county departments andthe basic functions of the county’sConstitutional Officers.

The Pasco County Citizens’ Academy isan interactive program that aims to give citi-zens a chance to gain a thoroughunderstanding of the county’s operations.

Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ & Blues Fest draws record crowdBy B.C. [email protected]

About 8,000 people attended the fifthannual Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ & Blues Fest,breaking another record for the eventfounded in 2010 by the Greater ZephyrhillsChamber of Commerce.

Besides attracting thousands to enjoy thebarbecue and bands, the event on Jan. 17 atthe Zephyrhills Municipal Airport, also lured51 teams to compete to see who makes thebest barbecue. Thirty-nine teams competedat the professional level, and there were 12backyard barbecue teams, according to anews release issued by the chamber.

Figures have not been tallied, but organ-izers estimate the event exceeded last year’sproceeds of $30,000.

The money raised benefits local youthand education programs and communityservices of the Chamber of Commerce.

A crew of more than 100 volunteerspitched in to make the event a success.Many worked the entire week, some arriv-ing at dawn and staying past sunset, to getthings ready for the festival and to take itdown and clean up the grounds.

“Beyond even our own optimistic pro-jections, Pigz in Z’Hills belongs toZephyrhills,” Vonnie Mikkelsen, executivedirector of the chamber, said in an email.

“I’m thrilled by the positive outcome

and so very happy for the volunteers, theparticipants and the community who cametogether to make it happen,” she said.

There were thousands who arrived bycar, and at least 26 private aircraft took ad-vantage of the airport’s “Fly-in” option.

Besides enjoying barbecued foods ofmany styles, spectators had the chance tolisten to music performed by TC Carr &Bolts of Blue, The Lauren Mitchell Band,Doug Deming & The Jewel Tones and ColdIron.

The event venue was larger this year, too,to make room for increased demand forkids’ activities, vendors, a classic car show,and aviation and military history displays.

The Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ competition issanctioned by the Florida BBQ Associationand is a qualifier for three prestigious cham-pionship contests: the Jack Daniel’s WorldChampionship Invitational in Lynchburg -considered the Superbowl of BBQ contests;American Royal World Series of BBQ inKansas City - the world’s largest and oldestcontest; and the Sonny’s Smokin’Showdown Invitational - the FBA’s newestcontest.

Wink’s Barbecue led by Wink Yelvertonof Fort Walton Beach, FL won GrandChampion Professional Division qualifyinghis team for all three prestigious contests.

Peter Golob of Extra Mile BBQ fromLoveland, Ohio took Reserve Champion. Inthe Backyard Division, Bettern Store Bot,Dave Grantham of Bushnell won GrandChampion while Bamboo Warrior, headcook Curley McKenzie of Thonotosassa tookReserve Champion.

Anyone is welcome to sit in the section,Aubin said, but those sitting there will receivethe low-gluten host during communion.

Aubin described what it’s like: “It’s a littlesmaller and thinner. It basically has no taste.”

“If you object to that,” the pastor said,“Go to the other line.”

The church also is taking care to avoidany cross-contamination when people drinkfrom the chalice during communion.

“To help us not get them confused, weuse a silver chalice (for the wine) and a sil-

ver ciborium for the low-gluten (hosts),” hesaid. In other sections, the church uses agold chalice and gold ciborium.

Some people are now asking if they canhave a smaller piece of the low-gluten host,Aubin said.

“The low-gluten hosts don’t break easy. Itold the Sacristan to go buy a scissors anddesignate it for only cutting the low-glutenhosts,” he said.

The church wants to encourage partici-pation in the Eucharist. It also wants to be asaccommodating as possible.

“We’re responding,” he said.Members of the congregation appreciate

the effort, he added.“Several people have come out of their

way just to thank me. (They told me) ‘Thankyou for considering us.’”

To prepare for this year’s sale, club mem-bers will accept donations at the Old LutzSchool on Mondays and Wednesday, from 9a.m. to noon, through the month ofFebruary.

Besides helping the club, the flea market

also serves a community need, Serio said.Many people are in the market for afford-able furniture and house goods, she said.

It’s also fun to look through the assort-ment of items that turn up every year at themarket, she added.

The club also can arrange to pick uplarge items, but appointments must bemade, Serio said.

The club is unable to accept large appli-ances or items that are heavy, such as sofasleepers.

Actually showing them only comes aftergetting the animals, caring for them andlearning their behaviors and traits. The stu-dents often are showing large animals thatare several times their weight, so developinga strong relationship is important.

“It’s spending time with them. If youdon’t spend time with them, they’re notgoing to do what you want,” said StephanieDahm, who’s showing a 700-pound heifernamed Dixie at the Florida State Fair andPasco County Fair.

While Dahm said that Dixie is a calmheifer with a good demeanor, she still has tospend a lot of time with her. That means atleast an hour or two each day during theweek and then more time on the weekend.

Dahm has shown animals before, andhad a Florida White rabbit that won Best ofBreed at the Florida State Fair and the PascoCounty Fair last year.

The jump to livestock is good practicefor her; she plans to study livestock manage-ment and ranch management when she

goes to college.Browder, who wants to be a large animal

veterinarian, also has a lot of experienceraising and showing animals. And while shewants to win when she competes, it’s theexperience and the friendships that make itworthwhile.

“I actually met one of my best friends atthe Pasco County Fair two years ago,” shesaid. “We all realize that we’re doing this forresponsibility, for leadership, to do some-thing,” she added.

In order to do something special withtheir four-legged partners, they have to prac-tice quite a bit. On many afternoons, FFAmembers will be out with their livestock,going through movements and practicingtechniques. Even if some people at theschool don’t even know they’re out there.

A lot of people at our school, when I saywe have a barn, they’re like ‘We have abarn?’ Not many people know about this,”Browder said.

But for around 30 members of the school’s

FFA program, it’s an important part of theirhigh school experience. They learn how tohandle different animals, they learn time man-agement skills, and they get to spend timewith both schoolmates and show partners.

“I love being out there with my friends,and I love being out there in the ring. Somepeople do sports, and I do cows,” Browdersaid. “I love it.”

Dahm agrees.“There’s something about cows,” she

said.

The Florida Department of Business andProfessional Regulation and the FloridaInstitute of CPAs are warning Floridians ofthe danger of hiring unlicensed certifiedpublic accountants to assist with their busi-ness financial needs.

In Florida, CPAs are required to have aprofessional license.

“As tax season approaches, manyFloridians are hiring CPAs to prepare their fi-nancial documents,” Department of Businessand Professional Regulation Secretary KenLawson said, in a release. “Unlicensed activi-ty puts Floridians at financial risk andthreatens the livelihood of licensed CPAs.While many accountants and tax profession-als can assist with a variety of financialneeds, only CPAs are licensed by the state toperform specific services.”

Licensed CPAs must meet strict profes-sional and technical requirements mandatedby Florida law to provide advanced finan-cial, business and tax services to theirclients. They are licensed to perform audits,reviews and compilations, as well as expressopinions of financial statements that pro-vide a level of assurance regarding thereliability or fairness of the financial infor-mation at hand. They must also hold a stateprofessional license to use the CPA designa-tion and advertise or represent themselvesas a CPA.

“Unlicensed activity is a serious concernfor the general public, particularly as we

enter tax season,” Deborah Curry, presidentof the Florida Institute of CPAs, said in anews release.

“It is vital to be aware of the benefits ofhiring licensed certified public accountantsand how to verify a CPA license,” Currynoted.

The Hillsborough Association for WomenLawyers is Florida’s winner of the 2015Voluntary Bar Association Pro Bono Award.

The award goes to an organization thathas demonstrated a significant contributionin the delivery of legal services to individu-als or groups on a pro bono basis.

The award is expected to be presentedby Florida Supreme Court Justice JorgeLabarga at a ceremony on Jan. 29.

The Hillsborough Association for WomenLawyers has a history of providing pro bonolegal services to people in need in theTampa Bay area.

That history began in 1981, when about20 women lawyers who would meet regu-larly decided to organize into somethingmore substantive than an occasional lunchgathering.

The Hillsborough Association for WomenLawyers was incorporated in 1991, andtoday it has nearly 300 members.

The leadership of the HillsboroughAssociation for Women Lawyers understoodthat a key component to accomplishing itsmission was to encourage members to pro-vide pro bono legal service.

In the past year alone, members of theorganization have volunteered more than

1,800 hours of pro bono service.Two members received special honors

last year for their pro bono work: KarenMeyer Buesing received the Tobias SimonPro Bono Service Award, presented by thechief justice of the Florida Supreme Court,and Laura E. Ward received The Florida Bar’sYoung Lawyers Division Pro Bono ServiceAward.

The organization’s work has included:• Helping Bay Area Legal Services pro-

vide legal assistance to low-incomeresidents in the Tampa Bay area.

• Staffing clinics with the Family FormsClinic, which uses volunteer attorneys tohelp people complete court-approved fami-ly law forms and packets.

• Providing new training materials and atraining video for the Domestic ViolenceAssistance Program.

• Working with Crossroads for FloridaKids Inc., which trains and mentors attor-neys to represent children in dependencycases, and Are You Safe Inc., which helps vic-tims of domestic violence.

In 2014, the association provided assis-tance for a new program, Project H.E.L.P.The project provides services to peoplewho are homeless. Its acronym stands forHomeless Experience Legal Protection.

Land O’ Lakes basketball preps another playoff runBy Michael [email protected]

When the Land O’ Lakes girls’ basketballteam bowed out of the Class 5A playoffs lastyear, they had many reasons to be proud.The Gators were beaten in the state semifi-nals by eventual-champion Southeast HighSchool from Bradenton, and they completedtheir third-straight winning season undercoach Phyllis Crain. Since they had gone far-ther than any girls’ basketball team in schoolhistory, students and fans might wonder ifthey could repeat that success and possiblyclaim a state title this year.

But with the playoffs starting, the coachisn’t focused on anything but the next op-ponent.

“We don’t look any further than we haveto. We look at one game at a time, and wetake it from there,” Crain said. “If you over-look an opponent, they can sneak upbehind you.”

Very few teams have snuck up on LandO’ Lakes this season. They finished their reg-ular season campaign with just three losses,fewer than last year. They ran the table inClass 5A-8 with a perfect 14-0 record. Andaccording to Crain, they enter the postsea-son with even more confidence after lastseason’s accomplishments.

While senior Jhade Hayes has paced theteam as both leading scorer and rebounder,the coach believes it’s the other playersdoing their jobs and playing important rolesthat allow skilled players like Hayes toshine, and the team to succeed in eachgame.

“It’s teamwork, not an individual that’sgoing to win the championship. They reallybelieve in each other,” she said.

The school has good reason to believe inCrain, who has built a strong program in herfour seasons at the helm. After nine seasonsas an assistant at the University of Tampa,she came to Land O’ Lakes High Schoolwanting to create a team that consistentlyhas both experienced players and youngertalent who can contribute and take on lead-ership roles later in their careers. Thisseason’s team has a good mix of returningstarters and reserves (the starting five con-sists of three seniors and two juniors), aswell as newer players who are looking tohelp continue the team’s forward progress.

As a result, Crain believes the team is atleast as good as the one that was one step

away from the state championship game.“I would say as good, and maybe a little

bit better,” Crain said. “We have a little bitmore rebounding presence inside.” A lot ofthat increased presence can be attributed tojunior Gabby Mills, which makes the teammore dangerous when she’s on the court.But as they head to the playoffs, the coachwants to see better team rebounding andtighter defensive play from the Gators.

While Crain has created a perennial con-tender in just a few short years, it’s not heronly goal when it comes to coaching. She’saware that many of her players might not

continue their basketball careers in college,so she wants them to get the most out oftheir high school experience.

“I went into it thinking that I really wantto teach these girls the game of basketball,and I really want to teach them some lifelessons, too,” Crain said. “Don’t get mewrong. We all want to win. But I really thinkit’s an experience.” The coach follows theiracademic progress and believes that learn-ing lessons like not being late to practice,working hard and believing in yourself willhelp them off the court.

But the team is performing well on the

court, too. Another season with more than20 wins is already secured, and another play-off berth is looming. And while Crainbelieves the team has the ability to make an-other deep run, she doesn’t want players tothink about anything but the hard work thatgot them this far, and about the next oppo-nent they face.

“We want to win the district champi-onship. We want to get back to Lakeland(where the state championships will beheld). That’s our main focus,” she said “But todo that, we need to focus on the little thingsand take it game by game,” she said.
