PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Snapshots from Christmas a century ago
Excerpts of news from Christmas 1915 in the St. Lucie County Tribune. (Indian River County formed in 1925. It was St. Lucie from 1905 to 1925. Prior to that it was Brevard County.)• The bank of Fort Pierce has instituted a new Christmas Savings Club. By means of memberships, the plan is to deposit small amounts weekly, varying from 2 cents up, according to the desire of the depositor. Two weeks before Christmas the depositor is mailed a check for the total.• More packages left Fort Pierce by mail and express during Christmas week than any other week of the year. About 2,100 packages left the city of Fort Pierce by express, for revenue of $1,955.35.• “Big Ben and baby Ben, other watches, clocks and silverware are prominently displayed in the DuBose jewelry window this week … So far we have received a fine
selection of French Ivory and Ebony.” – from J. C. Dubose, the only exclusive jewelry store in Fort Pierce. (The business moved to Vero Beach in 1920. The Rev. J.C. DuBose also was a preacher at the Vero Baptist Church.)• Fellsmere: “Dance to be given at the Dixie on Christmas-eve.” • Wabasso: “Our fruit growers have all kept very busy
putting up Xmas packages of fancy Indian River fruit.”• An advertisement: “Remember Your Neighbors. We ask you to remember the home merchant whenever you can do so without actual detriment to yourself. He is your neighbor, your friend, the man who has worked loyally with you to make this town what it is.” Some things never change.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Santa’s “naughty or nice” verdict:
• The newly remodeled building – a former hobby store that had been converted into a restaurant – sat empty for months. What was to be Jennifer’s Bakery & Café never opened. That’s because the couple behind the venture, Jennifer and Sam Boksmati, got a divorce. Jennifer and Sam, who once operated Fillin’ n’ Chillin’ on Oslo Road, have now gone their separate ways. When I crossed paths with Jennifer a few weeks ago, she talked about her fledgling baking business. Meanwhile, Sam has decided to open his own restaurant – at the same location where Jennifer’s Bakery & Café was going to be (on westbound State Road 60 just before the railroad tracks). He hopes to have Sammy’s Mediterranean Café up and running by mid-January. “Sammy’s back,” he said with a big grin.
It’s fair to say he was devastated when Jennifer filed for divorce. They had been married 18 years. But, with each passing month, he feels a little better. “Life moves forward,” he said. Sammy’s Mediterranean Café will be open for lunch and dinner every day except Sunday. There are 46 seats inside and three tables outside. “I put my life into this,” he said. “For the first time in 30 years, I’m not debt-free. There’s a lot of financial pressure – it’s scary.” Sam, 55, has been putting in 16-hour days to get ready for the opening. He often starts his day at 2 a.m. If you’ve never met Sam, who grew up in Lebanon, he’s unlike any restaurant owner you’ll meet in Indian River County. His goal is to have every customer leave with a smile.

I’m thinking his success rate is pretty close to 100 percent.• The future of Eva’s Polish Kitchen may depend on the stamina of Eva’s mother, Danuta. The owner, Ewa Liwanowska, is in Poland and unable to return to the United States because her passport was revoked and she is unable to obtain a new visa, according to her father, Howard Snevel. Ewa, who opened Eva’s Polish Kitchen in October 2014, returned to Poland two months ago to get her visa renewed, but the request was denied, Howard said. The family invested more than $100,000 in the restaurant, Howard said. He has sent appeals to President Barack Obama, two senators (Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio), Secretary of State John Kerry, and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Danuta, 74, has owned five restaurants, so she knows what she’s doing. However, as Howard pointed out, she had open-heart surgery in March. She has been working about 15 hours a day at the restaurant in Ewa’s absence.
What a mess. Attention, Rep. Bill Posey: Won’t you please help two of your constituents?• Part-time resident Paul Ettari sent an email last week to let me know the Wall Street Journal he received at his Connecticut home had an insert that promoted several spots in Florida, including Indian River County. Unfortunately, the website listed on the insert – visitindianrivercounty.com – was not yet operational.• There’s a neat story behind the World War I-era plane outside King’s Baptist Church for “December 1914.” It was made by Rick Dudney, who is a member of the church. He works at Piper.• Tell me again why the Press Journal would have readers drive to Stuart if they wanted to pick up a copy of the new book “Vero Beach Memories.”• Before he retired, the aforementioned Howard Snevel investigated Medicare fraud and abuse in Ohio. “We didn’t have to worry about job security,” he quipped.

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
Three years ago, Nick Dean broke a local sports record that had stood for 53 years. He hit 20 home runs to shatter the record for most homers by a Vero Beach Little League player. Scott Chisolm, the previous record-holder, hit 16 in 1960. Now 15 years old, Nick – who is homeschooled – is a freshman in the Vero Beach High School baseball program. Later this month, he will be among the 170 participants in the international High School Power Showcase in Miami. (Blake Caudill, a teammate on the Vero Beach Baseball Academy traveling team, also was invited to the event,
which will be held Dec. 28-Jan. 2 at Marlins Park.) This will be the third time Nick has competed in a Home Run Derby. He won one, and finished second in the other. Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant previously competed in the Power Showcase. Scouts for major league teams and colleges will be in Miami. Will that add to the pressure for Nick?
“I just try to think of it as another game,” he said. The Power Showcase has a fundraising component called “Home Runs That Help.” Nick has partnered with Vero Beach teen Cody Jones, who has advanced cystic fibrosis. All funds raised by Nick will be donated in Cody’s honor to the Sunny Shores Sea Camp. For more information about donating for the cause, call Nick’s mom, Chris, at 772-473-3433.

316. “Like a Rolling Stone”(1965) Bob DylanMemory: I love songs with powerful lyrics, and this one definitely falls into that category.
315. “Touch Me in the Morning”(1973) Diana RossMemory: A tremendous vocal performance. It was the second single by the former lead singer of The Supremes.
