Regina, SK Developing Musicianship through Improvisation Improvisationinmusicisthespontaneousexpressionofmeaningfulmusicalideas—itisanalogoustoconversationinlanguage.Interestingly,wearebornimprovisors,asevidencedbyourbehaviourinearlychildhoodandisclearlydemonstratedinchildren’splay.Whennotencouragedtoimproviseasapartofourformalmusictraining,theverythoughtofimprovisationinvokesfear.Improvisationenablemusicianstoexpressthemselvesfromaninternalsourceandiscentraltodevelopingmusicianshipinallaspectsofmusic.Thisworkshopisdesignedforthosewithlimitedornoimprovisationexperience.Thisworkshopwillintroducepractical,hands-ontechniquestoenhanceyourandyourstudents’musicianship,developimprovisationskills,andlearnhowtoincludeimprovisationasanintegralpartofyourteachingfromthestudent’sveryfirstlesson.9:30–11:45a.m.Location:139PlainsviewDrive,Regina,SKWorkshopFee:$20.00Developing Musicianship through MovementPlatostated,“Musicisthemovementofsoundtoreachthesoulfortheeducationofitsvirtue.”Esa-PekkaSalonenstated,“Musichasjustasmuchtodowithmovementandbodyasitdoeswithsoulandintellect.”FerruccioBusonistated,“Musicistheartofsoundsinthemovementoftime”andClaudeDebussystated,“Musicistheexpressionofmovementofthewaters,theplayofcurvesdescribedbychangingbreezes.”ThisintroductoryworkshoptoLaban’sMovementTheorywillteachyouhowtoincorporateLaban’sEffortsoftime,space,weight,andflowinincorporatingartisticinterpretationsinplayinganinstrumentandsinging.Ashumans,wearemovers.Eachmovementthroughintentsendsasignaltotheenvironmentandthosearoundus.Learnwhystudentsrushapassage,orwhytheydonotholdnotesfortheirfullvalue,andhowtoaidstudentsinovercomingtheseandotherrhythmicissues.Thisworkshopwillgivepracticalguidanceinhowtohelpstudentstophysicallyfeelmusicalmovementwhichwillthentransfertotheirperformanceofmusic.Thisisahands-onworkshop,wherewewillbeparticipatinginmovementactivities.Wearclothingthatallowsunrestrictedmovement.Feelfreetobringawaterbottletoquenchyourthirstthroughouttheworkshop.
