Developing Musicianship Friday, May 12, 2017 Regina, SK Developing Musicianship through Improvisation Improvisation in music is the spontaneous expression of meaningful musical ideas—it is analogous to conversation in language. Interestingly, we are born improvisors, as evidenced by our behaviour in early childhood and is clearly demonstrated in children’s play. When not encouraged to improvise as a part of our formal music training, the very thought of improvisation invokes fear. Improvisation enable musicians to express themselves from an internal source and is central to developing musicianship in all aspects of music. This workshop is designed for those with limited or no improvisation experience. This workshop will introduce practical, hands-on techniques to enhance your and your students’ musicianship, develop improvisation skills, and learn how to include improvisation as an integral part of your teaching from the student’s very first lesson. 9:30 – 11:45 a.m. Location: 139 Plainsview Drive, Regina, SK Workshop Fee: $20.00 Developing Musicianship through Movement Plato stated, “Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue.” Esa-Pekka Salonen stated, “Music has just as much to do with movement and body as it does with soul and intellect.” Ferruccio Busoni stated, “Music is the art of sounds in the movement of time” and Claude Debussy stated, “Music is the expression of movement of the waters, the play of curves described by changing breezes.” This introductory workshop to Laban’s Movement Theory will teach you how to incorporate Laban’s Efforts of time, space, weight, and flow in incorporating artistic interpretations in playing an instrument and singing. As humans, we are movers. Each movement through intent sends a signal to the environment and those around us. Learn why students rush a passage, or why they do not hold notes for their full value, and how to aid students in overcoming these and other rhythmic issues. This workshop will give practical guidance in how to help students to physically feel musical movement which will then transfer to their performance of music. This is a hands-on workshop, where we will be participating in movement activities. Wear clothing that allows unrestricted movement. Feel free to bring a water bottle to quench your thirst throughout the workshop. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Location: Conservatory of Performing Arts, University of Regina, Room 212 2151 Scarth Street, Regina, SK Workshop Fee: $30.00. Free for Conservatory of Performing Arts Teachers. Attend both workshops for $40.00. Free to students enrolled in CIGML Online MLT Course Note: For those attending both workshops, to accommodate the tight schedule a light lunch will be provided after the morning session for a small fee of $10.00. Clinician: Gregory Chase is both adjunct faculty and student in the Learning and Instruction Department of the Graduate School of Education at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. His studies focus on neuromusic, and cognitive psychology, specifically, how our brain learns and processes music when we learn music. Gregory has an active music studio in Regina, SK.
