The highlight of the technical presentations were

these presentations through Skype was to
maximize the benefits of the ASHRAE DL program
without burdening the financial resources of theSociety and at the same time minimizing the time
commitments of the speakers for travel.

Techmantra
is a residential conference with an interesting mix of activities for the
entire family which include technical sessions, yoga, presentations on meditation,personality development, stress management etc. by renowned speakers,
entertainment and cultural program. Organized by the India Chapter, it is held once a
year at a tourist destination close to New Delhi. The delegates are normally
accompanied by their families and it provides a unique opportunity for all to attendlectures, technical presentations and to promote fellowship.
The earlier conferences were held in Agra in 2007 and in Jaipur in 2008.
2009 was held from May 28th to 31st at Tarika's Jungal Retreat at Chail in Himachal
Pradesh. CHAIL is a quaint hill station known for its thick cover of majestic, soaring
deodars, pleasant weather and peaceful surroundings and was an ideal destination
for the event. Located at 2250 metres above the sea level, it is 45 km from Shimla.Chail is also famous for its cricket ground which is highest in the world.

The theme of the conference was Technology and You Design, Innovate and
Sustain. A total of 42 participants attended the conference with their families. The
delegates included leading HVAC consultants, decision makers of user organizations,
HVAC contractors, manufacturers and service providers. Both day 2 and 3 of theconference (29 & 30th May) included pre-lunch technical sessions preceeded by an
hour long mantra session. In all a total of 11 presentations were made.

The post lunch time was reserved for recreational activities such as tambola, sight
seeing, picnic, cricket for the children etc. and the evening programmes included folk
dances, family games and music..

1. Dr. Chandra Sekhar from Singapore on Decoupled Ventilation Strategies
for enhanced IAQ Demand Cooling and Demand Ventilation.
2. Dr. Bjarne Olesen from Denmark on Radiant Heating and Cooling byEmbedded Water Based Systems
3. Mr. Kecha Thirakomen from Bangkok on Stabilizing Chilled Water
Distribution
The DLs were selected from Europe and South East Asia to ensure that the
local time for presentations for the speakers was not inconvenient. As the
quality of the broadband connection was good, the DL presentations were quite
smooth and clear.
The success of in the current time of economic slow down is
ample proof of the popularity of its concept and of its future potential. It gave the
members and their families an opportunity to take a break from their daily
routine and at the same time learn new technology and tips on improving the
quality of life.

Awards and honors
Dr. Prem C. Jain, Ph.D, Fellow ASHRAE and a founding member of India Chapter, has receivedthe prestigious John F. James International Award from the American Society of Heating,
Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
The award was presented at the Society's 2009 Winter Conference held in Chicago on Jan. 24-28, 2009. The award recognizes an ASHRAE member who has done the most to enhance the
Society's International presence. The award is named in memory of John F. James, an ASHRAE
vice president who served on the International Committee and promoted the Society in Europe.
Dr. Jain has also been honored with the Society's Distinguished Fifty-Year Member Award this year. This awardrecognizes individuals who have been an ASHRAE member for a minimum of 50 years, a past Society President,Fellow, recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, or otherwise performed outstanding service to the Society. Theaward will be presented at the Society's Annual Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, during the plenary session onJune 21, 2009.
Dr. Jain founded the India Chapter in 1990 and continues to strongly support its activities along with other chaptersand student branches in the country. In addition to supporting ASHRAE in India, Dr. Jain has participated in seminarsand symposia in the United States, Germany and other countries. He used technical guidance from ASHRAE inrewriting the HVAC section of the National Building Code of India to improve energy efficiency.
Dr. Jain is Chairman and Managing Director, Spectral Services Consultants, New Delhi, India.

Ashish Rakheja, India Chapter President Elect and Chief Operating Officer of Spectral ServicesConsultants, New Delhi, has been appointed as the Electronic Communication Chair of the
ASHRAE Region-At-Large. As the Regional ECC, Ashish will oversee the RAL and Chapter
websites and co-ordinate the electronic communication activities of the RAL with the Society andthe constituent chapters.

Charter of the East India Section
The charter ceremony of the East India Section of the ASHRAE India Chapterwas held on the 17 January 2009 at Circle Club, Kolkata. More than 20members of the new section along with the Section Head Manoj Chakravortiwere present. From India Chapter, the President Sushil Choudhury. President
Elect Ashish Rakheja, and MP Chair Rajnish Joshi were also present from NewDelhi. The RAL SRC D Sudhir Sinha flew in from Mumbai for this specialoccasion.
After the roll call and a brief introduction, Manoj welcomed everybody andrequested Rajnish Joshi to explain why join ASHRAE. Rajnish presented indetail the benefits of becoming an ASHRAE member through a pptpresentation, which was well received. After a short address by the Presidentand President Elect of India Chapter, Sudhir Sinha presented the CharterCertificate and Banner of the new section to Manoj. Manoj was also providedwith a copy of the CD on ASHRAE Manual for Chapter Operation for smoothrunning of the section. This was followed by a very informative Workshop on
Chapter Operations conducted by Sudhir. The members showed keen interestin the workshop by asking many questions.
Before closing, Manoj outlined his vision for the Section by stating that theultimate objective is to make East India the 4th vibrant chapter of ASHRAE inIndia. He set a target of at least 30 members before the end of March 2009 anda full chapter in the next Society Year. The meeting adjourned and was followedby dinner.

India Chapter organized a successful membershippromotion night on 19 June 2009 at the Deck Suite, IndiaHabitat Centre, New Delhi as part of its continuousendeavour to increase Society membership. More than 25
prospective members attended the program. After a briefintroduction,President Sushil Choudhury made a strongpitch on the benefits of ASHRAE membership by explainingthe activities of the Society and its focus on the globalizationof its vision and base.
Ten new applications were received on the spot and fivemore are expected to be confirmed by 30 June 09. With the10 new applications, the total no. of new members added inthe current society year stands at 112, a record for theChapter.
The legwork for the successful night was done by our youngMP committee member Ashwani Jain and AIC executivesecretary Dinesh Rawat. Anoop Ballaney, Chapter Vice-President and Dr. R.K. Malhotra, AIC Past President alsograced the occasion.

ACRECONF 2009
'ACRECONF-2009' a two day International Technical Conference on'Reaching Out for a Greener Tomorrow' in Air-conditioning and Refrigerationwas held on February 20 & 21, 2009 at Hotel Grand, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi,
India. The conference was organized by Delhi Chapter of ISHRAE inassociation with ASHRAE India Chapter. The Conference provided anopportunity for the participating delegates to witness the unraveling ofcontemporary products and technologies through highly informativepresentations by distinguished International and Indian speakers.
The conference was supported by the following industry leaders:

More than 400 delegates registered for the conference and approx. 40papers from the Industry as well as Academics were presented. Almost halfthe presentations were from overseas speakers. Parallel sessions wereorganised on both days to accommodate presentation of large number ofpapers. The highlight of the technical sessions was the presentations of three
ASHRAE Distinguished Lectures One by Mr. Gordon Holness, SocietyPresident Elect in person and two by Mr. Ron Vallort, Society Past Presidentand Dr. Tom Lawrence, electronically through SKYPE. The organizers feltthat skype is the thing of the future and as much reliance as possible shouldbe based on this mode of communication. This mode was also consistent withthe theme of the conference.
On the first day in the morning Inauguration Ceremony was held and on thesecond day in the afternoon Concluding Ceremony was held. ConferenceProceedings was printed on a CD containing all the approved papers. Thesewere handed over to all the participants at the time of registration at theconference venue.
During Acreconf Night dinner program on the 20th evening, India chapterrecognized 12 Industry leaders for their outstanding contributions to thedevelopment and growth of the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning andrefrigeration industry in India.
The success of Acreconf 2009 has enthused the India Chapter and theISHRAE Delhi Chapter to hold this conference every year. Acreconf 2010 Shaping the Future for a Sustainable Tomorrow has already beenannounced and will be held on January 8 & 9, 2010 at the India Habitat Centrein New Delhi and aims to attract a record no. of 800 delegates making it one ofthe largest conferences ever held in the sub-continent.
