Welcome

The story of the thyroid is a big one; it’s a gland that has so many functions and it is of paramount importance to our health. Yet, Dr. Broda Barnes estimated that 40% of the adult population are thyroid deficient!

So we are delighted to have Dr. Rick Wilkinson; (a world thyroid expert and pupil of Dr. Barnes) who describes the issues and how to go about correcting them. If you regularly have cold hands and feet, infections and lethargy then your thyroid may be to blame.

Recently, I managed to catch up with Dr. Richard Lippman whilst he was on his way from Sweden to Scotland. We discussed free radicals and their scavengers; you will discover in his interview that he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine for measuring free radicals in-vivo and discovering the body’s natural four lines of defence.

Furthermore, we have the role of enzymes and how the earthworm enzyme lumbrokinase is leading the way to blood flow health.

Please tell us how we’re doing for you; we welcome your comments and suggestions.

The function of every cell in the body depends on the presence of an adequate amount of thyroid hormones in order to do the work it is supposed to do. Brain cells need thyroid hormones to think. Muscle cells need thyroid hormones to move. Therefore, what happens when a person’s thyroid is not working as well as it should? When inadequate amounts of thyroid hormones are able to enter into each cell to perform its normal work, what does a person experience?

There is this magnificent little molecule called T3 (one of several thyroid hormones), that is absolutely necessary for the cells of the body to produce energy. You eat food and you breathe in oxygen--but if you don’t have adequate T3, the food and the oxygen won’t be able to do much. T3 is involved in the process of mating food and oxygen (what you eat and what you breathe) in order to make energy for muscles, nerves, and other cells so that they are able to do what they are supposed to do.

Imagine that your muscles don’t have enough thyroid hormone. What are you going to experience? The muscles

might feel tired and weak. And they might hurt. If your brain is deficient in thyroid hormones, it might seem as though your brain isn’t working. As some of my patients describe it, “My brain feels like it’s in a fog”. It’s hard to think. Your joints might swell and hurt if thyroid hormones are not getting into the cells where the hormones can do their work. Your ovaries may not work properly and you can’t get pregnant (this is a fairly common issue, often undiagnosable using only conventional testing). Your intestines might not have the energy to function and you experience constipation--or paradoxically, you might have diarrhea. It’s well known that low thyroid causes hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) which leads to heart attacks and strokes. We’ll explore this further later in the article.

In addition to the above, low thyroid is a common cause of many symptoms including high cholesterol levels, premenstrual syndrome, post-partum (after having a baby) depression, weight gain, depression, cold extremities, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, high levels of homocysteine (a natural material in the blood, but large amounts can be dangerous), high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Do you happen to know anyone with any of those problems? Of course, we all do. And there is a crowd of people out there with these types of problems.

Can you trust the accuracy of the routine thyroid tests?A low thyroid status can cause the problems listed above. But many people with those problems have been told that their thyroid is normal. Is it always true that their thyroid is, in fact, “normal?”

A question we should ask is this: Might a lot of those symptoms or diseases be caused primarily or in part by low thyroid status but missed due to conventional testing and diagnostic methods? What is particularly interesting is that many of these problems will tend to improve or disappear when there is appropriate thyroid treatment.

Because there are so many people with fatigue, menstrual disorders, high cholesterol, depression, diabetes and such that are able to enjoy a much higher level of function with appropriately prescribed thyroid therapy, many doctors are recognizing that we are facing an epidemic of hypothyroidism (low thyroid status) that is not adequately diagnosed by using only blood tests during a medical workup.

These physicians are beginning to realize that the currently popular method of testing for thyroid status is inadequate, and often falsely leads doctors to believe that their patients have sufficient thyroid hormones when, in fact, they do not.

When we understand 1) what the thyroid hormones do, and 2) what it looks like when the thyroid system is not working properly, we are better able to accurately determine thyroid status than by looking only at a laboratory test or two.

We’ll try to explain this so that it isn’t too confusing. But first let’s consider the potential benefits of having a thyroid status that is slightly on the higher side of normal rather than slightly on the lower side of midrange.

Was Mona Lisa hyperthyroid?Allow me to quote a Nobel Prize winner, Harvard cardiologist Dr. Bernard Lown, addressing this issue in a tangential way. Dr. Lown deeply admired his chief mentor, Dr. Samuel Levine, and wrote about him in a wonderful book, The Art of Healing. His affection for this brilliant doctor brightens the paragraphs and pages in which he eulogizes this wise gentleman.

After Dr. Levine retired, he began seeing Dr. Lown as his personal cardiologist. Through the roles of student and doctor, Dr. Lown learned a great deal about Dr. Levine. Perhaps the most interesting observation regarding Dr. Levine, in the current context, is the following:

“Dr. Levine was impressed with the brightness and quickness of hyperthyroid (too much thyroid) patients. He admired them intensely, and believed that the condition protected them against coronary artery disease. I later learned, when he became my patient, that he had taken three grains of thyroid daily (that is, Armour® thyroid or equivalent) for more than thirty years. He maintained that those with increased thyroid function had bright, sparkling eyes and appeared to be interesting people, because personality is conveyed largely through the eyes. Levine suggested that the universal fascination with the Mona Lisa stems from her being hyperthyroid. He insisted that a slight stare makes viewers believe that she is focusing on them and is the basis for the attention this painting has received over the centuries.”

Dr. Levine is here talking about people with a slight excess of thyroid by current standards, not severely hyperthyroid people. Because he would rather be slightly hyperthyroid than slightly hypothyroid (low thyroid), Dr. Levine took a rather generous dose of natural, desiccated thyroid for many years.

Whether the good doctor was correct in his appraisal of Mona Lisa, we’ll never know. But in regard to other issues, Dr. Levine is increasingly being shown to be correct. Namely, the benefit of thyroid for the cardiovascular system, the use of natural, desiccated thyroid, and the value of dosing a patient toward the upper end of the acceptable range rather the low end.

It may help to know what is meant by natural, desiccated thyroid. In the marketplace, it is often known as Armour® thyroid, Nature® throid or ERFA®.

Poor lifestyle and hypothyroid symptomsIn light of this information, how do you take action if you think that you might have low thyroid function? A couple of cautions you should consider before concluding that you must have hypothyroidism.

First, diet is terribly important. Putting on weight while drinking Frappuccino’s in the morning and a few pints in the evening is not likely a thyroid problem.

Second, if you’re tired but you’re working three jobs, sleeping 4-5 hours each night, and getting no exercise, I doubt that your fatigue is primarily a thyroid issue.

Lifestyle choices are hugely important for feeling good and having plenty of energy. If you really want to feel good, pay attention to your food choices, sleep habits, exercise and other

important lifestyle issues.

But if you are treating your body well, feeding it well, and you’re still feeling poorly, thyroid legitimately might be an important factor in your getting well.

The TSH test: measuring the voice of the pituitaryThis is where some of the challenge for the consumer (you) comes in. If you’re concerned, legitimately, about some of these thyroid related issues, how do you know if you need thyroid? Without getting very technical, there are a few basic definitions that you need to have a handle on in order to understand what your lab work means and how to discuss your situation with your doctor.

The most frequent way that doctors evaluate thyroid status is to have blood drawn in which the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is checked. You especially need to understand the significance of the TSH.

The pituitary is a small gland situated in the forward part of the head a bit behind and between the back ends of the eyes. It’s the boss of the thyroid. The pituitary tells the thyroid what to do. The pituitary continuously samples the blood for one of the thyroid hormones and if the thyroid is not doing its job, the pituitary says, “Get to work.” At first it suggests the need for improved efficiency on the job with a very soft voice (TSH is not elevated). But if there is an inadequate response on the part of the thyroid, the pituitary raises its voice bit by bit until it can be shouting and even screaming at the thyroid to get off its duff and start producing thyroid hormones, (elevated TSH).

The current definition of low thyroid primarily has to do with how loudly the pituitary is talking to the thyroid. As long as the pituitary’s voice is not too high, it is assumed that the thyroid is doing its job. After all, the pituitary, which monitors and bosses the thyroid, is happy, or so the current medical thinking goes. If the pituitary is raising its voice (elevated TSH), then the thyroid must not be producing adequate thyroid hormones. A person with a pituitary having to shout (elevated TSH) at the thyroid, is by current popular definition hypothyroid.

The TSH is the measure of the how loudly the pituitary is speaking or shouting. The conventional definition for low thyroid function (hypothyroidism) is a TSH over about 5.00. So if you go to the doctor and your TSH is 5.20 you might be told that your thyroid is a bit low and you need to begin thyroid therapy. On the other hand, your TSH might be 4.80. In which case your doctor might say your thyroid is normal and you don’t need any thyroid.

Typically unrecognized limitations in using the TSH testThere are several problems with this definition. First and foremost has to do with the clinical picture of what is happening with you. Do you have any signs or symptoms of low thyroid? If you do have symptoms/signs that are suspicious for low thyroid, then a TSH of 4.80 or even a lot lower might be consistent with low thyroid.

As one example, suppose that the pituitary is “hoarse” or has “laryngitis”. It can’t raise its voice even if it wants to. It might

Page 6: Aging Matters Issue 4 2014

www.antiaging-systems.com // Order hotline: 1-866-800-4677 // e-mail: [email protected]

be trying to scream but only getting out a gentle whisper. In which case, a low thyroid would be consistent with a low TSH (contrary to the usual picture). So we either have to test for “pituitary laryngitis” (which can be done) or pay close attention to the signs and symptoms of the person.

Often a woman will have a damaged pituitary following childbirth in which it becomes unable to raise its voice (Sheehan’s syndrome). These women are often misdiagnosed as depressed or malingerers when, in reality, they are hypothyroid with low TSH. Treat them with thyroid as they should be treated and all becomes well. This is one of the challenges of an overly-simplistic diagnostic approach.

Another reason that total reliance on TSH levels is inappropriate is that TSH levels can vary substantially during the day. There can easily be a 200% or more variance during the day in a given individual. On the desk in front of me are the 24-hour measurements of two patients where the TSH was drawn every few minutes. With one patient the 24-hour low was about 0.30 and the high was about 2.00. The other showed a low of about 1.00 and a high during the 24 hours of approximately 5.00.

A TSH of 1.00 is considered good, but a TSH of 5.00 would often be considered high, indicating low thyroid status. So which is the TSH to use?

Another legitimate and argued question is: At what level is the TSH too high? As mentioned above, most labs use a number in the vicinity of 5.00. The American Society of Clinical Endocrinologists suggests that when treating low thyroid problems the TSH should be kept below 3.00. If a TSH above 3.00 is not best for a patient being treated, it’s reasonable to ask if a TSH of 5.00 might not be too high for an untreated person.

The experts in designing tests to evaluate human health are members of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry. They have recently noted the following:

• Over 95% of healthy people with optimal thyroid function have a TSH that is less than 2.50.

• Patients with a TSH above 2.50 may be in the early stages of thyroid failure.

• When treating a patient, the TSH optimally should not be above 2.00.

It is also important to measure the actual amount of thyroid hormones present in the blood. There are two main hormones. One is called T4, as it is the thyroid hormone with four iodine atoms attached to it. The other is T3, because it has three iodine atoms attached. T3 is some three to ten times as active as T4. If T4 or T3 are low, (or even low end of normal range) the thyroid system may not be functioning optimally.

One other thing; if you have an inflammation of the thyroid gland (thyroiditis or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) you can have normal levels of TSH, T4 and T3, but the whole thyroid system might not be working right. Often we find that people with thyroiditis feel much better when treated with thyroid hormones.

Thus we see that measuring only TSH levels is inadequate

to optimally evaluate the thyroid status. We believe that a thorough initial evaluation should include TSH, thyroid antibodies (to check for thyroiditis), free T3 and free T4 (the active or available forms of T3 and T4) and possibly reverse T3.

A better way to diagnose low thyroidUltimately, the most important factor in making a diagnosis is the knowledge and awareness of the physician. A physician aware of the importance of optimal thyroid function is going to consider at least the following factors:

1. Your blood work.

2. Your history including important symptoms you are experiencing.

3. An endocrinologically oriented physical examination.

4. Your temperatures (thyroid maintains body heat).

For a variety of reasons that we will not discuss in any detail here, every blood test may be perfectly normal and a person might still need thyroid hormone supplementation. That’s the reason for the four-point approach to evaluation.

If we return to the thinking of the previously-referenced Dr. Samuel Levine, you’ll appreciate what I mean. Dr. Lown says the following about his mentor:

“He recognized… that ‘medicine is the science of uncertainty, the art of probability.’ He believed that the bulk of relevant information could be obtained from a properly gathered history and meticulously executed physical examination. He taught that a battery of tests must not replace a mind willing to think… “He hinted that frequent reliance on a so-called workup, engaging the heavy medical artillery of the day, such as X-ray or cardiac fluoroscopy, electrocardiography, phonocardiography, blood work and urine analysis, is testimony to a lack of clinical skill…”

My own mentor on the subject of thyroid evaluation and treatment was Broda Barnes, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Barnes was direct in his thoughts regarding the evaluation and treatment of patients. He said, with great vigor; “Always treat the patient, not numbers on paper.” By this he meant that many doctors are too busy to listen to the patient and to do the requisite exam, or they were ignorant of what the signs and symptoms of low thyroid truly were. Thus, hypothyroidism was, to them, only what the numbers on paper would report. If a patient’s TSH was 4.80, in these doctors’ minds the patient was normal. If the TSH was 5.20, the patient was hypothyroid. For Dr. Barnes, that was not being a good physician.

A brief review to clarify1. TSH is the generally accepted method of diagnosing thyroid status. A high TSH is thought to always indicate low thyroid status. A low TSH is usually interpreted as too much thyroid. And a normal TSH is considered indicative of normal thyroid function.

2. There is now a large body of data that shows us that this interpretation of TSH is only legitimate in some cases. People who are depressed may have standard laboratory tests all showing normal. But they are often shown to be

Page 7: Aging Matters Issue 4 2014

7

hypothyroid when more advanced testing is done. People with inflammatory diseases such as some forms of arthritis will often have normal standard lab reports--but when more accurate testing is done they are shown to be low in thyroid. Ditto, when one is dieting (calorie restriction). Ditto with chronic fatigue syndrome. Ditto with diabetes and fibromyalgia and obesity and others.

3. The best way to diagnose thyroid status is to use a combination of:

a. A variety of blood tests, not just TSH, or TSH and free T4.

b. A thorough history taken by someone who understands nuances of hypothyroid manifestations.

c. An endocrinologically oriented physical exam.

d. Basal body temperatures or other methods of evaluating metabolic status.

Dr. Ord in LondonA correct diagnosis of thyroid status may be critically important. Let’s use the example of atherosclerotic heart disease (heart attacks).

In the mid-1870s, virtually nothing was known about the function of the thyroid. One of the classic presentations in the history of thyroid research was given by Dr. William Ord. He described a patient who had been a healthy and industrious woman at the age of 49. She gradually became cold, experiencing shivering spells. Her mental faculties and memory decreased. Her movements became slow and awkward--it required two hours for her to dress herself. She would fall asleep unless she was moving. She died at age 60.

On autopsy it was discovered that her thyroid gland was entirely destroyed by fibrous tissue. The pathologist described the vascular system like this: “…the arteries were everywhere thickened, the larger ones atheromatous.”

In other words, she had extensive atherosclerotic (hardening of the arteries) disease of all larger arteries. Dr. Ord was convinced that there was a connection between the destruction of the thyroid gland and the symptoms she had, including the damage to the arteries. A commission was chartered to explore the function of the thyroid gland. Over the following years, a reasonably clear picture of the role of the thyroid was obtained. What is clear and generally accepted is that low thyroid function causes or contributes to hardening of the arteries.

Professor Billroth of ViennaThis gentleman is one of the most famous surgeons of history. Very large goiters (enlarged thyroid glands) used to be relatively common. Cosmetically, they were disturbing. The good professor developed a safe and effective method of removing thyroid glands. However, with no thyroid gland remaining, the people became severely hypothyroid and would die of myxedema, a technical term for the swelling associated with very low thyroid function.

An Austrian law mandated that everyone dying in hospital be autopsied. It was discovered that all of these patients dying of low thyroid because their thyroids had been removed had

generalized, severe hardening of the arteries throughout the body.

A student of Billroth, von Eilsberg, did further research demonstrating that the removal of the thyroid gland from sheep and goats led to systemic atherosclerosis.

Professors Pick and Pineless, also of Vienna, removed the thyroid glands of sheep and goats, but provided the animals with thyroid replacement similar to Armour® thyroid. These animals did not develop atherosclerosis.

American ResearchDr. Hurxthal of the Lahey Clinic in Boston reported on observations in their clinic. They would remove the thyroid gland of patients who were hyperthyroid (too much thyroid). Dr. Hurxthal noted that these patients would often have cholesterol levels that were quite low prior to the surgery. But after the surgery, if too much thyroid tissue were removed rendering the patient hypothyroid, they would often develop high levels of cholesterol.

The relationship between thyroid status and high cholesterol levels was so significant that Hurxthal suggested that serum cholesterol might be considered as a diagnostic measure for thyroid function. He even suggested that elevated cholesterol might be an indication for thyroid therapy if another cause for the hypercholesterolemia could not be found.

Professor William Kountz, Washington University of St Louis, published in 1951 Thyroid Function and Its Possible role in Vascular Degeneration. He reports on a study of patients with low body temperatures and many with elevated cholesterol. The first group was businessmen with an average age of 55. This group had little evidence of hardening of the arteries and the men were patients in his private practice. A second group were outpatients at the University Clinic. These men averaged age 61. Many already had evidence of some hardening of the arteries.

Each group was divided into two. One of the subgroups received thyroid treatment. The other subgroup did not receive thyroid. All groups were followed for five years and monitored for heart attacks and strokes.

• Group one: There were no deaths in those treated with thyroid. In the untreated group, 15% had a fatal heart attack or stroke.

• Group two: There was 3% mortality in the treated group and 19% mortality in the untreated group. Over six times as many men died in the untreated group.

Dr. Barnes went to Graz, Austria every year for fifteen years and spent at least one month studying the autopsy records accumulated over some 200 years. As mentioned above, every hospital death required autopsy.

The conclusion of a huge amount of work and research is this: Low thyroid people are subject to increased risk of infection and poorer ability to fight the infection. Prior to the advent of antibiotics these people would routinely die of infections prior to dying of heart attacks. The records show that those dying of infections had extensive hardening of the arteries. After

Page 8: Aging Matters Issue 4 2014

antibiotics became available, these people would be treated allowing them to live long enough for heart attacks to kill them.

‘Normal’ vs. optimal Recent research indicates that just having normal thyroid function based on TSH levels is not necessarily optimal. The increased risk of atherosclerosis in borderline hypothyroidism extends into the normal range. In other words, having a high normal TSH (borderline low function) increases your risk of hardening of the arteries. One study suggests that the lowest possible TSH within the normal range (i.e. around 0.4) is the best way to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. “Normal” is not the same thing as optimal as this study demonstrates. In the field of antiaging or integrative medicine, our goal is to achieve the optimal range, not just the ‘normal’. Studies like this confirm our setting of higher goals.

Thyroid and cholesterolPeople with subclinical hypothyroidism, (a technical term for people with no dramatic symptoms of low thyroid function and an elevated TSH) often have elevated cholesterol levels. When treated with thyroid replacement hormones, there is a significant decrease in both total cholesterol and in LDL (the so-called ‘bad’ cholesterol).

The higher your T3 levels are, the lower your cholesterol levels are likely to be.

Another study looked at 35 male patients with severe atherosclerosis. They monitored these men for two years and again evaluated the amount of hardening of the arteries. In 14 there was no progression of the disease. 21 had significant progression. They then asked what was most significant in apparently preventing progression. One of the two most important factors was the T3 level, (the active form of the thyroid hormone included in Armour® thyroid but not in Synthroid® or its equivalents).

Articles like these begin to delve into the issue of which is the best way of treating low thyroid function. We’ll address this a little later. But with information such as this, many of us who work daily in this field question the notion of treating patients only with T4-containing preparations such as Synthroid® and Levoxyl®. This article shows that higher levels of T3 are at least suggestive evidence that a combination of T4 and T3 might be preferable to T3 only.

There are a large number of articles dealing with the issue of atherosclerosis and thyroid function. The challenge for a writer is choosing from so many that demonstrate the same principle: adequate treatment with thyroid hormones is often protective against hardening of the arteries and thus heart attacks.

Other benefits of appropriate thyroid replacementHomocysteine is a known risk factor for heart attacks, strokes and peripheral artery disease like claudication (pain in legs with walking due to atherosclerosis). It is a toxic metabolite (breakdown product) of the amino acid methionine. Elevated homocysteine levels are also associated with increased risk of bone fracture, dementia and attention deficit.

People with low thyroid function tend to have high levels of homocysteine. People with high thyroid levels have low homocysteine levels. Therefore, treating people with high homocysteine levels and indications of hypothyroidism with appropriate thyroid therapy might benefit the high levels of homocysteine. This might reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and bone fractures.

Fatigue, sadness, irritability, anger, sleepiness, sense of being chilly or hot and a variety of other symptoms are rather common in today’s world. These are all possible signs of hypothyroidism.

A study published in 1999 looked at a group of patients who had previously been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. These patients had all been treated with T4 only (i.e. Synthroid® or an equivalent). However, their symptoms (as listed in the previous paragraph) had not improved.

The study reduced the amount of T4 given to each patient and added in a roughly biological equivalent of T3. These patients were now receiving a combination of T3 and T4 (similar to what one receives by using Armour® thyroid).

The conclusion of the study was that nobody did better on T4 alone. Most of the patients did better on the combination of T4 and T3. “It seems clear that treatment with thyroxine (T4) plus triiodothyronine (T3) improved the quality of life for most patients.”

The best treatment for hypothyroidismThe most common therapy for hypothyroidism is T4 only, or a medication like Synthroid®, Levoxyl® or the generic levothyroxine. We have quoted various articles which suggest that the combination of T3 with T4 might be beneficial for a number of reasons. Dr. Levine, mentioned in the first part of this article, routinely took a combination of T3 and T4, the combination included in desiccated thyroid.

Dr. Barnes, my mentor on thyroid treatment, tested a variety of thyroid preparations. His conclusion was that most patients do best using Armour® thyroid.

Most important to me as a treating physician is: How does my patient feel with the treatment I’m providing? Does s/he feel better as a result of taking the thyroid hormone?

In the Bunevicius study reviewed above, patients taking T3 and T4 clearly felt much better than when they took T4 only.

My experience in treating patients like this for some 25 years is that most of them feel better taking the T3 and T4 combination than if they take the T4 alone. I’m not dogmatic about the use of the combination as I’m interested in the well-being of the patient. There are a few (very few) that actually feel better taking the T4 alone. For them I gladly prescribe Synthroid® or an equivalent.

Most patients, however, feel best taking the combination of T3 and T4. I routinely prescribe Armour® thyroid, which is desiccated (dried) thyroid tissue with a carefully regulated amount of T3 and T4 included in it.

How I transfer my patients from T4 only therapy to desiccated thyroidOne must first understand that there is not an exact equivalence between T4 preparations and Armour® thyroid. When a person takes T4 medications, the amount is given in micrograms. Synthroid® 50 means 50 micrograms of Synthroid®.

Armour® thyroid is given in milligrams and indicates the amount of desiccated (dried) thyroid tissue being used. The amount of T4 and T3 in the thyroid tissue is carefully regulated. One grain of Armour® thyroid contains 38 micrograms of T4 and 9 micrograms of T3. (Of interest, Armour® thyroid also contains T2 which has an increasing amount of fascinating data showing that it may also be an important factor in overall thyroid health. Synthroid®, of course, contains no T2.)

T3 is typically considered to be 4 times as potent as T4. One grain of Armour® has 38 micrograms of T4 plus 9 micrograms of T3, which is considered to be equal to approximately (4x9=36) 36 micrograms of T4. One grain of Armour® has the equivalence of 74 (38 mcg from T4 + 36 mcg equivalence from T3) micrograms of T4.

When I make the switch from Synthroid® to Armour® equivalents, I calculate approximately what the appropriate conversion would be. If a person is taking 75 micrograms of Synthroid®, I would consider changing to Armour® 60 mg based on the above calculations. If a person is taking 150 micrograms of Synthroid®, 120 milligrams of Armour® might be a good dose to change to.

I usually do not have them stop Synthroid® one day and start full dose Armour® the next day. I’ve found that I have fewer problems in making the conversion if a person takes half their Synthroid® dose and half their projected Armour® dose for 7-10 days. Then I have them stop the Synthroid® and take the full dose of Armour®.

Synthroid® equivalents are usually scored so they are easily broken in half. Armour® is not quite so easily divided, but is not too difficult with the use of a sharp knife. [Ed. – natural thyroids are available in a wide range of doses, so at least initially the patient can use a different dose before reaching their regular plateau].

The transitions are not always so clear cut. What to do when a person is taking 100 micrograms of Synthroid? I will usually transition to Armour® 90 milligrams, especially if I think that the person is running a bit low. Effectively, 90 milligrams of Armour® is a higher dose than 100 micrograms of Synthroid®. When making the change, I always let my patients know what to expect if it turns out they are getting too much thyroid. Typical symptoms of too much thyroid will be:

1. Rapid heart rate.

2. Palpitations.

3. Feeling hyper, something similar to drinking too much coffee.

If one of my patients begins having these symptoms, I advise them to stop the thyroid for a day or two and call my office

for advice on dosing. We then will decrease the prescription appropriately. In practice, this seldom happens.

ConclusionOptimal supplementation with natural forms of thyroid hormones has a strong healing benefit for those whose native thyroid status is less than optimal. When treatment is adequate it can help to lower cholesterol, improve depression and prevent advancement of atherosclerosis. It can also help to lower blood pressure and generally help people to feel better. There are many other benefits we are unable to discuss in a brief article.

The diagnosis of low thyroid function is based on a combination of the symptoms a person is experiencing, a physical examination, body temperatures and blood work. Most people will feel best if thyroid replacement is done using desiccated thyroid, which includes a combination of T3 and T4.

The information presented in this article should assist you in being able to intelligently discuss thyroid replacement issues with your physician.

Phil Micans, the Editor of Aging Matters magazine interviews Dr Richard Lippman on 5/5/2014 - (herein referred to as PM and RL respectively).

PM: “Dr. Lippman it’s a great pleasure to be in your company again and thank you for coming to England.”

RL: “Thank you Phil, I’m glad to be here.”

PM: “My pleasure. Of course you’ve contributed many great articles and indeed videos to the IAS website already, but I was hoping in this interview we’re doing today to ask you firstly- how did you become a world expert in free radicals?”

RL: “During the late 1970s I was connected with a group at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden- their leading technical institute. There, I studied physical chemistry and physics. In the physics laboratory we were generating free radicals from a cobalt 60 cannon

and studying the effects and damages of the various free radicals to living tissues, as well as the downstream by-products; as a consequence, I got together with a group in northern Sweden under the direction of UpJohn Pharmacia. The Professor in charge was Professor Karl LAFORGE and we had regular free radical meetings; at the time, people thought free radicals were hippies! (ha ha) But the free radicals we were discussing were reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their effects on medicine and biology.”

PM: “So what did UpJohn Pharmacia do with your research?”

RL: “They would typically study the effects of free radicals and other reactive-oxidant species, especially on the cardiovascular system. They had laboratory animals related to the chipmunk, and they would anesthetise them temporarily so they wouldn’t feel anything (nothing

we did damaged the animals), and we would then stretch the pouch of their skin over a microscope to see the blood flow. We injected a dye, and then we further injected free radicals, and you could see the damage to the walls of the arteries, and then as a third step antioxidants were injected into their bloodstream, like glutathione, and you’d then see the damage repair itself after several minutes; for example, the arteries weren’t leaking anymore.”

PM: “I see.”

RL: “That gave us a clue to the damages going on in our bodies--and we were able to see it all for the first time in real time video.”

PM: “So oxidation is obviously a problem, what kind of problems does it cause in humans?”

RL: “Well, for example, if you are having breathing problems, such as asthma or COPD, then that could be because of a lack of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that we demonstrated is important for repair in animals. If you don’t have enough glutathione in your lungs then you are likely to develop some kind of pulmonary disorder. With recent research, some of which I have done myself, we learned that the glutathione concentration level in the lung cells, the epithelial cells, is 140 times what it is in the bloodstream. Why is it so much? Because every day we are breathing in pounds of oxygen and we are generating free radicals in those epithelial lung cells--so we need to protect those cells from free radical damage, the same type we saw in the animals. In our lungs we need to maintain that 140 gradient to defend the cells against the intake of oxygen and its subsequent free radical damage.”

PM: “That makes sense. Are there any other conditions in humans that are strongly related to free radicals?”

RL: “Oh yes, many, like hardening of arteries. But there are some which we wouldn’t perhaps normally attribute to free radicals--for example, cataracts that form in the eyes, for which many people have surgery. That’s an oxidation problem gone awry in the lens of the eye. Another is wrinkles in the skin. Hormones like IGF-1 help the body generate high levels of glutathione. Glutathione is a key free radical scavenger, without which fine lines form around the eyes. Free radicals also affect the burning of fat. If your mitochondria are not burning fats and sugars properly then you gain weight as you age; this tells you that your energy factors are not working properly and the fat burning process is not what it was when we were younger.”

PM: “It is very well known that it was Professor

Denham Harman in 1956 who postulated the free radical theory of aging. I’d like to have your opinion please, Dr Lippman, between aging and free radicals. What do you think?”

RL: “It is still somewhat unknown as to what it means exactly. But Dr. Harman did experiments which showed that with certain types of mice you get a 50% increase in mean lifespan. That was with a substance called BHT which we use in ACF228®. It works very well in animals, although we aren’t so sure in humans. We don’t really understand why this works still, to this day.”

PM: “I happen to know that you were nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Could you please elaborate why?”

RL: “Yes. In the early 1980s, I developed a system to directly measure free radicals and lipid peroxides in the bloodstream of humans. At the time and until this day, most people are measuring ORAC values. ORAC values are what one measures in a test tube. So 20,000 ORAC values apply in-vitro. But I developed a system to measure antioxidants in-vivo.”

PM: “That sounds very important indeed. The obvious next question is, armed with this information, what did you do with it?”

RL: “The next step was to do clinical double-blind, cross-over studies on this fresh data. Together with a lot of volunteers we measured their normal free radical/ lipid peroxide production to see how different antioxidants would work to quench those radicals, to render inactive those radicals and other reactive oxygen species. For example, effects on the superoxide or singlet oxygen- to name two potent free radicals.”

PM: “So at this point you started to put a formula together to see if these radicals could be effectively neutralised?”

RL: “Yes, I put a protocol together and did extensive measuring that went on for months. I also measured animals, but mostly humans. With those data I was able to register a product with the Swedish FDA that would help to reduce free radicals in humans. Eventually, it was also registered with the Italian FDA and even sold in the Vatican with the blessings of the Pope!”

PM: “Wonderful! So your product exists today as ACF228®- how did that come about?”

RL: “After getting permission to sell it in Europe, I was able to get US and international patents. The attorneys that looked over my US patent said it was impossible to get a longevity patent, as there wasn’t a Ponce de Leon

Page 13: Aging Matters Issue 4 2014

fountain of youth. But I achieved a patent based on such studies. For years afterward, people challenged some of the active ingredients and asked if it really worked. But then the NIA--the National Institute on Aging--in 2002 assigned 3 independent government labs to test the active ingredients in ACF228® on mice. All 3 labs confirmed that it extends lifespan in mice by about 8%--and then all the doubting Thomases were silenced! So now we had both European and American evidence that ACF228® was effective in both animals and humans.”

PM: “ACF228® has 15 ingredients. How did you go about determining them?”

RL: “I discovered something that was unique about the hierarchy of free radicals. I could divide them up in the human body into different lines of defense. I invented that terminology. Today you hear people talking about lines of defense in the body. Essentially there are 4 lines of defense; the first one is catalase, an enzyme that’s used in ACF228® that renders hydrogen peroxide into harmless water and oxygen. The second line of defense is superoxide dismutase; SOD converts the hydroxyl radical into ordinary water. ACF228® contains additional ingredients that activate our own SOD to defend against that radical. The third line of defense we have is the membrane bound vitamin E and C – which are not the type we take in ordinary supplements. The body only allows 1 molecule of vitamin E for every 50 lipid molecules in a cell wall, so we strengthen that with the ingredients in ACF228®. The fourth line of defense is the ubiquitous and powerful antioxidant glutathione. We have invented another product called ACF228® Breathe Easy, where you can breathe in the dust of glutathione and other antioxidants into the lung cells, as we discussed previously.”

PM: “So clearly the ACF228 Breathe Easy is going to a boon to anybody with asthma, COPD, or other breathing difficulties.”

RL: “Yes, especially if they are tired of using the antibiotics and steroids, which have serious consequences in long term use; you can’t use them for years at a time without other medical problems arising.”

PM: “Are there other important ingredients in ACF228®?”

RL: “ACF228® has a patented substance called NDGA, or Nordihydroguaiaretic acid. This comes from the Creosote bush that is found in deserts. It was discovered that these bushes can survive very high and dry environments. For example in Death Valley, California there are temperatures of up to 150° F with intense radiation from the sun, yet these Creosote bushes survive. That led me to

discover this powerful antioxidant in them.”

PM: “Fascinating. I happen to know that Creosote bushes have one of the longest lifespans of flora of up to 13,000 years.”

RL: “Right, thanks to their protection from radiation via NDGA.”

PM: “I think you’ve really covered a lot of ground for us in terms of the benefits of ACF228®, but I think we should ask if there are any side effects or contraindications.”

RL: “None whatsoever, since 2 European FDAs have tested it without issues and then the American government also found no side effects. So this is a very safe product.”

PM: “Good news indeed. So for anybody interested, how do they dose ACF228®?”

RL: “I think that many people who are not aging that fast, perhaps those under the age of 50, it’s okay to take 1 capsule per day. But for people who know they are aging rapidly--and they are usually over the age of 50-- then I would recommend 1 capsule per meal. Why? Because it is very easy to remember when you are eating to take 1 capsule with your food. One also might remember to take other supplements, too. Then you don’t have to have a special time in mind. Also, as they are food supplements, why not take them with food!”

PM: “Good advice. We’ve covered a lot of ground. Is there anything else you would like to say in conclusion?”

RL: “I’d like to summarize by saying that many of the most toxic substances on the planet are generated internally in our cells, or externally by radiation. We naturally defend against these toxins with our cells’ 4 lines of defense. Fortunately, we can further boost these lines of defense with supplements such as ACF228® capsules and Breathe Easy, as well as IGF-1 and growth hormones.”

PM: “Dr. Lippman I would like to thank you for all your wonderful research and also all your valuable time that you have given us today.”

RL: “Thanks Phil, my pleasure.”

He has had a general practice in the heart of Richmond for over 17 years. Dr. Kwok also holds posi-tions as the vice-president of Canada RNA Biochemical Inc., the secretary of National Traditional Chinese Medicine Association of Canada and the editor-in-chief of Dragon’s Medical Bulletin.Heart attack and stroke are the two most devastating and common circulatory issues we face in our time. In majority of cases the cause is a severely reduced or completely blocked blood flow due to thromboembolism. Currently there are three main categories of pharmaceutical agents used to treat or prevent ischemia issues: thrombolytics, anti-platelets, and anticoagulants. Thrombolytics can be a life-saver in acute situations when used appropriately, but

have a few drawbacks: short window of opportunity for its application, the risk of intra-cranial bleeding, and the fact that they have to be administered via injection. Anti-platelets and anticoagulants may be used acutely or as a secondary prevention. They work by limiting the spread or worsening of the ischemia but do nothing about the existing thrombus or embolus; it is up to the body’s own fibrinolytic system to resolve the clots. Like thrombolytics, anti-platelets and anticoagulants also carry the risks of causing unforeseen bleeding in spite of due care or testing. Is there not a safer and also effective option for treating or preventing ischemia besides the above categories of pharmaceuticals? The answer is “yes” and the agent that would fulfill those criteria is called lumbrokinase!

What is lumbrokinase?Lumbrokinase is a complex enzyme preparation extracted from earthworms. Lumbrokinase can also be referred to as earthworm powder enzymes (EPE) or earthworm fibrinolytic enzymes (e-PPA). Earth-worms have been used in traditional Easter medicine for thousands of years in countries such as China, Japan and Korea. According to the ancient Chinese medical publication Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compen-dium of Chinese Botanical and Animal Products), earthworms or “Earth Dragons” possess the proper-ties to “invigorate blood, resolve stasis, and unblock the body’s meridians and channels.” As a result, earthworms are commonly used in traditional herb-al formulae that treat ischemic or thromboembolic conditions.

Inspired by the empirical wisdom of traditional Eastern medicine, the Japanese started searching for ingredients that could account for the observed properties of earthworms. Finally, in 1983 Dr. His-ashi Mihara succeeded in extracting powerful fibrin-dissolving enzymes from earthworms and he named this group of enzymes lumbrokinase. Since then Korean and Chinese researchers have compiled extensive in-vitro, animal and clinical data on the properties and applications of lumbrokinase over the past 30 years.

As of today, a simple PubMed keyword search of “lumbrokinase” would generate 46 results, with pa-pers dating as far back as 1991 and as recent as April 2014. However, performing the same keyword search (in Chinese) in the largest Chinese digital periodicals

Page 16: Aging Matters Issue 4 2014

database (www.cnki.net) would generate over 1400 publications! This paper is in no way an attempt to summarize all of the available clinical research on lumbrokinase, but merely to point out some of the clinically relevant highlights. Still, what is presented here is barely scratching the surface of its potential clinical applications.

Mechanisms of lumbrokinaseLumbrokinase is a multiple enzyme preparation; nat-urally it also affects the coagulation system in mul-tiple ways. Since the discovery of lumbrokinase by Dr. Mihara in 1983, various researchers have isolated the enzyme by different methods and also studied its physiological properties in animal models. All of the results pointed towards the fact that lumbroki-nase possesses both direct and indirect fibrinolytic effects1-2. It can activate the plasminogen system and also can achieve direct fibrinolysis independent of the plasminogen system. In 2004, Zhang el al. dis-covered that lumbrokinase also inhibit PAI-1 activity and enhances t-PA activity3. In addition to being a strong fibrinolytic agent, lumbrokinase may indi-rectly achieve anticoagulation by inhibiting platelet functions. Jiang et al. were among the first research-ers to report on such a property4.

Potential clinical applicationsOne of the most intensely researched areas is the use of lumbrokinase in the prevention and treatment of ischemic stroke patients. Lumbrokinase was shown to be safe and effective for treating acute ischem-ic stroke by lowering blood viscosity, preventing re-perfusion damage, and reducing neural deficits5-7. It was also shown to improve the efficacy of aspirin as a secondary prevention of stroke8,15.

Lumbrokinase is equally impressive in the treatment of coronary arterial diseases, including patients with unstable angina. Besides lowering whole blood vis-cosity, plasma viscosity, fibrinogen, and ESR, research data indicated that lumbrokinase was able to mini-

mize angina attack frequency, minimize the need for nitroglycerine and improve ST segment elevation on the EKG9-11,16. Other potential applications of lum-brokinase include deep venous thrombosis12, essen-tial hypertension13, vascular dementia14, etc.

Unknown to most clinicians, lumbrokinase is now been investigated as a potential anti-tumor and anti-metastatic agent. There are various in-vitro and clinical evidence pointing towards the involvement of hyper-coagulation in stimulating tumor growth and metastasis. There are also evidence showing the potential use of anti-coagulants in limiting cancer growth and metastasis. Though still early in the research stage, lumbrokinase has been shown to in-hibit stomach cancer cell growth and liver cancer cell metastasis in vitro20-22. Animal models and human studies are surely to follow in the near future.

Clinical safety of lumbrokinaseThe biggest advantage lumbrokinase has over current thrombolytics, anti-platelets and anticoagulants is its safety record, especially with regards to bleeding risks. Virtually all of the researchers who have ever studied or published on lumbrokinase concluded that it is a well-tolerated and very safe fibrinolytic agent. The review paper by Wang et al. estimated the overall adverse reaction rate to be about 3% with symptoms like mild headache, dizziness, constipa-tion, and nausea; all the symptoms resolved sponta-neously after stoppage of medicine and required no special treatment17. Another review paper by Tang et al. reached an even lower rate of adverse reactions – 0.7%; though the authors believed this number to be an under-estimation18. The types of adverse reaction include nausea, vomiting, rash, skin itch, and dizzi-ness; there were no bleeding issues, nor damages to liver or kidney.

Researchers and clinicians have long been baffled and amazed by the efficacy and safety of lumbrok-inase as a fibrinolytic agent. Now it appears that lumbrokinase, as a multi-enzyme preparation, not only has fibrinolytic effect but also prothrombin acti-vating effects. It is a coagulation modulator helping to maintain the balance of the coagulation system19. This research by Zhao et al. supports the notion that lumbrokinase is a bi-directional agent, and is there-fore much safer than any of the currently known agents that affects the coagulation system.

Advantages of lumbrokinase (Boluoke®)Not all lumbrokinase products are made the same. Lumbrokinase is a mixture of enzymes from earth-worms, thus different lumbrokinase manufactured by different companies will have slightly different properties due to the differences in the extraction and purification processes. There are also products that use ground-up earthworms or crudely extracted proteins, yet claim to contain pure lumbrokinase.

Boluoke® (lumbrokinase) is the proprietary lumbrok-inase product that went through Phase I to Phase III clinical studies in China, the one first approved by the Chinese SFDA, and also the one with the longest history of safe clinical usage. For most clinicians Bo-luoke® stands for consistency in safety, quality, and efficacy. Current challenges of lumbrokinaseEven though Lumbrokinase is a well-researched and clinically proven enzyme preparation, outside of Asian counties it is relatively unknown to most conventional practitioners. This is likely due to three main reasons: first, most of the available clinical data on lumbrokinase is in Chinese and not readily accessible to most clinicians or researchers; second, pharmaceutical grade lumbrokinase is expensive and hard to come by (primarily from China), thus only a few companies are selling and promoting its clinical use; third, major pharmaceutical companies have not found a way to profit from this enzyme, since natural proteins are not patentable. However, works have be-gun in further selecting and isolating lumbrokinase to one single enzyme, paving way for the eventual patenting of that particular enzyme via recombinant DNA technology.

The use of earthworms to achieve circulatory health

in traditional medicine has come a long way. First there was dried earthworms used in traditional oriental herbal decoctions, and then there were ground-up earthworm powders. Later came the granular crude extract of earthworms and now there is lumbrokinase, a purified multiple-enzyme prepa-ration extracted from earthworms. Just like omega-3 molecules from fish oil, polyphenols from green tea and curcumin from turmeric root, in time lumbrok-inase shall be known as the most valuable ingredi-ents from the humble earthworms. Dear Dr. Dean

“I am a 50 year old man in decent health- certainly with no medical conditions. I have never smoked, I drink alcohol rarely and do my best to eat and live well. Re-cently I have had some stabbing pains in my toes/ feet and occasionally in my hands. This usually occurs when I lie down to sleep. It is not debilitating, more frustrating. However if it is a prequel to some problem, I would rather deal with it now and therefore would greatly appreciate your opinion.”

P.M., Ireland

Dear Mr. P.M.,

Based on the limited information provided, the prob-lem seems to be most likely some kind of neuropathy or ‘mini-seizure.’ How long has this been going on, and is it getting worse over time?

Several suggestions would be to try Benfotiamine, about 300 mg twice per day and Gabapentin (Neurontin®) at bed-time, in a dose ranging from 300-1800 mg. A third sugges-tion is to add Lithium Orotate (2 caps twice daily).

Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1, which has been shown to be of benefit in diabetic and peripheral neuropathy.

Neurontin® is an anti-seizure medication that is used for a number of conditions, including peripheral and diabetic neuropathy, restless legs, alleviation of menopausal hot flashes (unrelated to your condition of course), and insom-nia. (1) I usually start my insomniac patients on 600 mg at bedtime, and have them titrate the dose up or down to what works for them. Neurontin® is remarkably free from side effects, (other than causing drowsiness and inducing sound,

restful sleep) and does not adversely interact with other medications. (2) When properly dosed, patients experience sound, restful sleep, and awaken feeling refreshed. If you are groggy upon awakening; (at any dose) then try reducing the dose, or taking it earlier in the evening. The usual effective dose is 600-800 mg at bedtime, but some very sensitive people need only 300 mg and some require up to 1800 mg. The dose of 2400 mg per day is the usual maximum dose, although dosages as high as 3200 mg have been reportedly used.

Lithium Orotate acts as a ‘nerve stabilizer,’ and may be helpful in your situation. Lithium Orotate is 20 times more bioavailable than prescription forms of lithium and can therefore be used in fractional doses compared to the pre-scription forms of lithium. Because of the low doses used, blood ‘lithium levels’ are not necessary, as are required with prescription lithium. Let me know how you do.

gram using testosterone cypionate for replacement with wonderful results for the last ten years. I would love to hear his comments.”

L.G., USA

Dear Mr. L.G.,

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to address this im-portant issue. Your question is based on publicity surround-ing the study in the November 6th, 2013 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA-1), which frighteningly concluded that “the use of testosterone thera-py was associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes.”

This was a shockingly flawed study, with more holes in the data and their interpretation than a block of Swiss cheese. I am amazed that this paper was ever published--especially in such a prestigious journal.

Let me put things in perspective. The paper was a “retro-spective cohort study,” conducted by a review of medical records from 76 cardiac catheterization laboratories in the VA system. The study involved the records of 8,709 men who had undergone coronary angiography, between 2005 and 2011 who had testosterone levels less than 300 ng/dl. Of the 8,709 “participants,” 1,223 were in the “testosterone group.” This testosterone group was a hodge-podge com-prised of those who had received one prescription for tes-tosterone (17.6%) or more than one (82.4%). Thirteen of the men (1.1%) were treated with topical gels, 436 (35.7%) with injections, and 774 (63.3%) with patches. Of those who had received “more than one prescription,” the mean number of days from first fill to last fill of testosterone was 376 days. Of the patients in the testosterone group, 734 (60%) had a sub-sequent testosterone level drawn. The baseline testosterone in the treatment group was 175.5 ng/dl- -and (for the 60% who had follow-up testosterone levels checked) testosterone was increased to only 333.2 ng/dl.

The statisticians who wrote the study used “stabilized inverse probability of treatment weighting” to assess the association between testosterone therapy and the primary outcome of death, heart attack, and stroke, and used a num-ber of variables to create these “weights,” including “comor-bidities” (41 diseases) and “procedures” (13 procedures).

The authors reported in the introduction that of the 7,486 patients not receiving testosterone, 681 died, 420 had heart attacks, and 486 had strokes. Of the 1223 patients who had received testosterone, 67 died, 23 had heart attacks, and 33 had strokes.

I am not a statistician. I was never very good at math. But it is pretty easy to calculate that there were 6 times the number of patients in the no-treatment group compared to those who received testosterone. If we multiply the number of adverse outcomes in the testosterone-treated group by 6, we arrive at only 402 (6 x 67) who would have died in the treatment group (versus 681 who died in the no treatment group); 138 (6 x 23) who would have had heart attacks in the

treatment group (versus 420 no treatment); and 198 (6 x 33) who would have had strokes (versus 486 no treatment).

Thus, it is a complete mystery to me how the authors, using their advanced statistical manipulations, arrived at their clearly erroneous conclusion that “the use of testosterone was associated with increased risk of mortality, MI, or ischemic stroke,” when the results plainly indicate that testosterone use resulted as in a much lower percentage of adverse events. This confirms the old adage that “figures don’t lie but liars can figure.”

The statistical anomalies are not the only flaw in this study. Recall that to be enrolled in this study; a subject had to have undergone coronary angiography. Obviously, these men had all already been determined to be at risk for death, heart attack or stroke (the “end points” of the study) due to their having been referred for angiography. Healthy men do not undergo coronary angiography.

The other criterion for inclusion was testosterone levels less than 300 ng/dl. A recent study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology evaluated the relationship between testosterone levels and risk of cardiovascular (CV) events in 2,416 men aged 69-81 years, over five years.(2) The researchers found that testosterone levels were inversely as-sociated with the risk of CV events (i.e., those with the high-est testosterone had the fewest “events”). They reported that men in the highest quartile of testosterone (those with more than 550 ng/dl), had a lower risk of CV events compared to the men in the 3 lower quartiles (recall also that the men in the testosterone-treated group in the JAMA study raised their testosterone to only 332.2 ng/dl). The researchers con-cluded that “High serum testosterone predicted a reduced 5-year risk of CV events in elderly men.” [Emphasis added]

Another recent study of 1031 male veterans over age 40 with low testosterone (less than 250 ng/dl) also contradicts the JAMA study. (3) In this paper, 398 of the patients were treat-ed with testosterone. The mortality over 5 years was 10.3% in the testosterone-treated men versus 20.7% in the untreat-ed men. The authors reported that “testosterone treatment was associated with decreased risk of death.”

More recently, three eminent physicians reviewed the JAMA study. (4) They stated that “We have serious con-cerns regarding the validity of these results based on author errors, study design, data presentation, methodology, and ultimately common sense.” They examined the JAMA article point-by-point, and concluded that “We believe the evidence to date strongly suggests that testosterone therapy improves CV risk. We reject the assertion by Vigen et al., “that testosterone therapy increases CV risks or mortality.”

If this is not enough to set your mind at ease, consider the other potential benefits of testosterone therapy that were curiously conceded by the authors of the JAMA study--tes-tosterone replacement therapy improves sexual function, (5-7) bone mineral density, (8, 9) increases free-fat mass (8, 9) and strength, (10) improves lipid profiles (11-13) and insulin

resistance, (11, 12) and increases the time to ST depression during stress testing. (14, 15)

My only caution to those using testosterone supplementa-tion is to monitor the CBC (to insure that the hematocrit does not rise above normal, causing “thicker” blood) and estrogen levels (testosterone aromatizes into estrogen, which can be controlled with low doses of anastrozole) and to maintain the testosterone level in the “safe” range, i.e., above 550 ng/dl.

Ward Dean, M.D.

[Ed. - Testosterone itself is a controlled substance and therefore difficult to import and export. However, the testosterone increasing substances IAS offer are Andro-Pro™ and Testoluten® (a peptide bioregulator). Also, consider that DIM and the aromatase inhibitor anastrozole, (Arimidex®) skew the testosterone/ estrogen balance in favor of testosterone].

“I am a type-I diabetic patient, on an insulin pump. I also take 1,500 mg of Extended Release Metformin each day. I suffer from obesity, and am trying to lower my HbA1c to a 6. I am enclosing my personal report from my physician for the past 5 years. Can you give me any suggestions please?”

D.N.A., Dubai

Dear D.N.A.

Thanks for sending your lab work and the note from your physician. First, I think you should increase your dose of Metformin to 1,000 mg twice daily. Next, I recommend you add several other anti-diabetic medications to your regi-men. Acarbose (available from IAS) is a “starch blocker.”

It slows the conversion (digestion) of complex carbohy-drates like bread, pasta, rice, beans and starchy vegetables into simple carbohydrates (sugar). I suggest chewing one 100 mg Acarbose tablet with each starchy meal. The most common side effect is intestinal gas—which is not caused by Acarbose, but by the undigested food fermenting in the intestines. This is a signal that Acarbose is doing its job, and you are eating the wrong foods. But it provides you with a “cushion” for your diet. Incidentally, Acarbose is the most widely used anti-diabetic drug in China. (1) I incorporate Acarbose into the weight-loss programs of many of my patients.

Another class of anti-diabetic drugs to consider is the DPP-4 inhibitors, such as Onglyza, Tradjenta, or Januvia. Dis-cuss these with your physician, and see if he will prescribe one for you. DPP-4 inhibitors work well with Metformin, and further help restore insulin receptor sensitivity. These drugs also help regenerate pancreatic beta cells, to help your body produce its own insulin. They are all generally useful adjuncts for weight loss.

Yet another class of medications you might add is Victo-za—the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist Victoza® (liraglutide). This drug is injected (like insulin), but unlike insulin, will not cause hypoglycemia. Victoza® appears to be even more effective than the DPP-4 inhibitors for helping with weight loss. None of the drugs that I suggested above will cause hypoglycemia. They all act by different and complementary mechanisms to normalize your blood sugar, and will enable your insulin to work more efficiently. Your requirement for insulin will be decreased, and you will most likely need to reduce your dosage. That will be beneficial for weight loss, as insulin is the hormone that drives blood sugar into the cells, where it is stored as fat. Hopefully, you will be able to eliminate the insulin entirely, although this may not be possible if you are truly a Type I Diabetic.

In addition to controlling your diabetes, I think it is very important for you to correct your abysmally low level of Vitamin D. IAS has a convenient, once/week capsule that contains 50,000 IU of Vitamin D-3.

I hope these suggestions will be helpful for you.

Sincerely,

Ward Dean, M.D.

[Ed. – Metformin is available from IAS in 500 mg and 850 mg tablets as well as a slow release form. Acarbose (Gluco-bay®) is also available. Vitamin D3 is available in either 5000 IU or 50,000 IU capsules].

This heightens awareness and concentration to prevent narcolepsy (sleeping in the day-time). The results can be quite remarkable, leading to heightened states of awareness and attention, whilst at the same time not affecting sleep patterns nor causing ‘highs and lows’ that were associated with the earlier form of stim-ulants. BEC5 Curaderm cream was discovered by Dr. Bill Cham on the Oceania island of Vanuatu. Dr. Cham noticed that when the local farmers rubbed the plant called the ‘devil’s apple’ (found in that region and which is related to eggplant) onto the backs on animals that were experiencing skin cancers - that they had considerable success in its removal.

It is known that BEC5 Curaderm has now been used by more than 80,000 patients, all with remarkable success. Clinical trials in the UK and Australia have confirmed the ability of BEC5

Curaderm to regress non-melanoma skin cancers within weeks! For example, one open study with 72 patients had 100% healed skin cancer lesions within just 13-weeks of applying BEC5 Curaderm cream twice daily.

Can-C eye-drops are the original formula for use in cataract and contains a purified and racemized form of n-acetylcarnosine, a natural di-peptide with potent anti-glycating and anti-oxidant properties that prevent lipid peroxidation.

Patients in trials placed 2-drops of Can-C into their eyes twice daily. After 6-months of use, 88.9% of patients showed improvement in the clarity of their lens and 90% saw an improvement in their visual acuity.

There have been numerous reports of cataract shrinkage and even disappearance with documented evidence that Can-C eye-drops remain effective (and safe) more than 24-months later.

The most commonly expressed initial reports are that glare is significantly improved, (for example night driving is much safer) and color perception is enhanced.

What’s more evidence is mounting that Can-C is efficacious for all of the following disorders: cataracts, glaucoma, presbyopia, corneal disorders, eye strain, ocular inflammation, blurred vision, dry eye syndrome, vitreous opacities and lesions, diabeteS mellitus complications, contact lens wearers, (regarding the last point in the list above, Can-C inhibits the accumulation of lactic acid which has greatly benefited those who wear contact lenses, because it enables them to be worn for longer without pain).

Dr. Kyriazis book, ‘the cataract cure’, details the usefulness and evidence of Can-C eye-drops.

Now available from IAS as a FREE e-book: http://www.antiaging-systems.com/can-c-ebook

“I am so grateful for the development of Can-C eye-drops, not only have they significantly improved my own eyesight, but many of my patients report most favorably about them too. Now we have a real alternative to eye surgery so Can-C can be considered to be a genuine breakthrough.” Richard Lippman, Ph.D.

Can-C Plus capsules are specially designed to be used alongside the Can-C™ eye-drops to aid and even boost their effectiveness. As there are a few supplements that can block the action of Can-C eye-drops, Can-C Plus capsules have been carefully designed to avoid them. Three Can-C Plus capsules a day can be taken with food, with or without Can-C eye-drops, although for maximum benefit it is recommended that they are used together.

Like all good antiaging supplements, centrophenoxine has many useful features with few side effects. From a memory and cognition viewpoint, centrophenoxine has demonstrated significant improvements, most notably its ability to speed up the process of memory recall.

One of centrophenoxine’s most noted benefits is its ability to effectively and quickly remove a cell toxin that accumulates with age (and Alzheimer’s disease) called lipofuscin. Lipofuscin can make up parts of the so-called Alzheimer brain plaques, but it can even be found in the brains of ‘normal’ aging people as well as other organs such as the heart, the lungs and even the skin- where it forms part of the so-called age or liver-spots, the brown flecks found in ‘aged’ person’s skin. Indeed several weeks of centrophenoxine supplementation has seen removal and lightening of such spots.

Centrophenoxine (Centro-Pro™)

“Centrophenoxine has shown many facets to improve conditions related to my membrane hypothesis of aging, for example its ability to improve brain-performance, survival time in animal experiments, and to remove the cell aging-pigment called lipofuscin. It has been my antiaging supplement for more than 30-years.” Professor Imre Zs.-Nagy

CoQ10 is a universal energy agent that has significant protective qualities for the heart and the cardiovascular system. An important point- anyone taking a statin drug to lower cholesterol must also be taking CoQ10 since statins lower CoQ10 levels.

UPDATE: Our CoQ10SR™ is a slow release version combined with cyclodextrin, a new technology that enables greater bioavailability by improving the passage through the stomach into the blood. It has been clinically shown that CoQ10SR™ has up to twice the bioavailability of ‘regular’ CoQ10. Thus depending on how you look at it, CoQ10SR is either double the effectiveness of CoQ10’s of the same dose, or half the price of CoQ10’s of twice the dose!

CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10)

By harnessing the power of the natural healer, curcumin, (found in turmeric) we have access to a wide-ranging set of positives. From bolstering the immune system, to moderating inflammatory responses, it can also act as an anti-viral and an anti-fungal agent. It’s even been found to have the ability to

counter many conditions including a very recent study as an anti-depressive.

UPDATE: Our CurcuminSR™ is a unique slow release version that is much more bioavailable than regular versions.

The experiments of Professor Jozeph Knoll dramatically extended the lifespan of rats who were given deprenyl. Even the first rat to die that was treated with deprenyl died after the last rat not treated with deprenyl died.

This graph highlights the loss of dopamine with age, on average 13% per decade past the age of 40 for the average person, but far greater for those suffering from Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease is characterised by the loss of the brain neurotransmitter dopamine. Deprenyl helps to prevent this loss by acting on the specific enzyme MAO-b. Professor Knoll also believes that deprenyl very significantly increases PEA (phenylethylamine) and that this may have an even more significant function than the MAO-b inhibition, (for more details on this please read Professor Knoll’s excellent book on the subject- ‘the brain and its self’).

Deprenyl (selegiline)

Professor Jozeph Knoll of Debrechen University in Hungary- the inventor of deprenyl

In addition to improving dopamine levels, deprenyl has also been shown to help rebalance serotonin, noradrenaline and acetylcholine levels and whilst the uses remain ‘off-label’ deprenyl has been used for Alzheimer’s and even cancer treatments.

Our focus here is upon deprenyl’s enhancement of dopamine, which is a key brain chemical responsible for drive, focus and well being and even libido (especially for men).

Technically it is the closest legal molecule to GHB. Its approved use in Europe is to help with epilepsy, but like GHB, GABOB has been shown to improve growth hormone release significantly when taken before bedtime. GABOB does not have the ‘sleep inducing’ effects of GHB, but it can cause some sedation if taken in high doses.

Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that helps to prevent damage to important cellular components that can be caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides.

Glutathione is principally synthesized inside the body and is relatively poorly obtained via the diet. The Advanced Cellular Glutathione supplement is a spray providing nano sized particles for sub mucosal absorption to create instant bioavailability.

The idea behind the antiaging use of deprenyl is to use very small doses regularly in order to help maintain healthy dopamine levels and thus improve cognitive function and help to maintain function at a better level for much longer.

UPDATE: The Dep-Pro™ liquid can dispense selegiline HCL in small quantities as 1 drop = 1 mg.

Esnatri cream is the world’s only bio-identical estrogen cream to replicate the work of Dr. Jonathan Wright. Dr. Wright has highlighted that the ‘average’ woman produces estrogens in the ratios of estriol 90%, estradiol 7% and estrone 3% and these are the exact same ratios found inside Esnatri. Each 1ml of Esnatri cream provides 2mg in total of the triple estrogens and it enables a precise, natural and indeed bio-identical hormone replacement therapy for women concerned about the menopause. IAS provides dose and timing advice from Dr. Wright for both estrogens and progesterone with every purchase. The additional use of bioidentical progesterone should be used along with an estrogen replacement program. For further information on estrogens we recommend one of Dr. Thierry Hertoghe’s Hormone handbooks.

GHRP2 is growth hormone releasing peptide number 2. It is a potent releaser of HGH for fat loss and is particularly synergistic with sermorelin. It is best taken in the morning, by swallowing 4ml of the liquid. Up to 10ml may be used for shorter periods of time.

UPDATE: The work of Dr Richard Walker highlights that GHRP2 is particularly effective/ synergistic when combined with sermorelin.

HemaGel was created in the Czech Republic and specially designed to help improve the treatment times of wounds, scratches and cuts, reducing the start-to-finish treatment time by as much as 50%. It does this (1) by absorbing harmful and damaging free radicals and (2) by helping to absorb blood and puss extrudes, thus also keeping the wound cleaner. HemaGel is recommended for use after BEC5 Curaderm applications to speed up the skin’s healing. It is also as an excellent product to have in the First Aid cabinet- just in case! Simply apply the HemaGel daily onto a cleaned (and disinfected) wound, and then apply a bandage over it.

Hydergine (ergoloid mesylate)

Hydergine is an extract of a fungus that grows on rye called ergoloid mesylate. Its approved uses have been to aid persons with memory disturbances, Alzheimer’s disease and even for persons who have suffered from electric shock, drowning or suffocation. This is because hydergine stabilises the levels of oxygen in the brain. It has been shown to improve oxygen levels when they are too low and decreases levels when they are too high. The result of this optimised oxygen availability in the brain is an ability to do more mental work without becoming tired. Accordingly, hydergine can be a good

Page 28: Aging Matters Issue 4 2014

This graph highlights that Professor Pierpaoli’s Melatonin Zn Se formula mimics the night peak of melatonin. Note that sublingual melatonin tested peaks too soon and that time released formulas peak too late.

Hydergine also stimulates the growth of dendrite nerve fibers. These connective strands are known to decline in aging. This is another antiaging feature of hydergine. Some have even linked the density and numbers of dendrite fibers to the level of I.Q. In summary, hydergine helps to protect against conditions of hypoxia and peroxidation, important factors to guard against a stroke and generalised brain injuries. Hydergine can extend the boundaries of mental workload and energy, fighting against boredom and may even provide some groundwork for raising the levels of intelligence.

The Bertonin-Freddari et al, 1994 study highlights that hydergine can improve the size, volume and number of mitochondria in old animals- towards the youthful example; as is shown here the difference between young, old (without hydergine) and old (with hydergine) is significant.

Melatonin (MZS™)

Melatonin is one of nature’s remarkable substances. It is made in response to darkness by the pineal gland. Melatonin’s benefits to help overcome jet lag and shift work have become quite well known and indeed it is useful for this purpose since adequate melatonin availability enables our bodies to be correctly in tune with our circadian rhythms. These circadian rhythms dictate our hormonal cyclicity and this cyclicity ultimately determines our aging and our level of immunity. Unfortunately melatonin secretions decline with aging. Professor Pierpaoli has published widely on melatonin, principally through the New York Academy of Science and at the meetings of the Stromboli conferences on aging and cancer- which IAS is delighted to support. What is important to know about melatonin is that Professor Pierpaoli advocates a 3mg dose to (his words) “put the pineal to sleep.” In addition, it is also vital to use a melatonin that produces a night peak of melatonin that is the same as the peak produced by the pineal itself. Thus he has achieved using specific excipients in his own formula ‘MZS™’ (which also contains the additional synergistic ingredients of zinc and selenium).

For further detailed information about melatonin and Professor Pierpaoli’s work we recommend his book ‘the key of life,’ it is now available as a FREE e-book from the IAS website.

Here are some before and after Fundus photos showing the benefit of Melatonin Zn Se. They highlight dramatic improvements to both wet and dry forms of macular degeneration. In a trial published in the New York Academy of Science, 110 eyes, (100 patients) with both wet and dry forms of ARMD were treated only with 1 tablet of Melatonin Zn Se nightly. After 6-months 90% of the treated patients’ eyes had significant improvements to their condition. This is simply remarkable compared to the current approved therapy for ARMD which involves injecting the eye quarterly, (costs $1000+) with 50% improvement at 24-months!

Minsaw™MinSaw has been updated numerous times, but now it’s in its best formula ever. MinSaw provides all of these proven hair growth and protectors in its latest formula:

• Minoxidil: Perhaps the best known agent to help stimulate hair growth, which it does by increasing nitric oxide promotion in the root of the hair. In doing so it delivers more nutrition for the hair to grow faster. MinSaw has the most potent amount of minoxidil at 8%.

• Vitamin C: Helps stimulate hair growth and ‘clean’ the root bulb. MinSaw contains the active form of L-ascorbic acid.

• Saw Palmetto: This herb helps to block the damaging effects of DHT, a known hair growth restrictor.

• Resveratrol: The remarkable protective agent found in red grape skins has recently been noted to help induce hair thickness.

• Melatonin: This has been documented and patented to help prevent hair loss.

• Retinolic acid (also known as tretinoin). This super high strength vitamin A improves skin condition by enhancing blood flow to the skin. In the same way, this ingredient

tool to battle through boring paperwork or a long drive home in the dark. A fascinating animal experiment showed a special ability for hydergine to improve mitochondrial condition. The mitochondria are vital organelles found in every cell of our body responsible for the generation of ATP, the universal energy molecule. Unfortunately mitochondrial efficiency declines as we age. However, an Italian study highlighted that old animal mitochondria can be improved with hydergine supplementation.

The results of low dose naltrexone, (widely known as LDN) therapy have been remarkable. Originally, the use of naltrexone was in the management of dependence on opioid and alcohol. But it was Dr. Bernard Bihari in the 1980’s who first used low dose naltrexone for the treatment of HIV and then for a number of other autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease and many immunological related diseases. Many MS patients have reported an improved quality of life. A leading study has established that by maintaining regular nightly LDN, less than 1% of the MS sufferers experience fresh MS attacks. IAS supplies the LDN dose of 4.5 mg.

Naltrexone

MSH2-Pro™ MSH2 is the abbreviation for melanocyte stimu-lating hormone (type II). This hormone has a di-rect effect on tanning the skin and if used regular-ly will darken skin- even without exposure to the sun. In addition, MSH has been noted to enhance libido and suppress the desire to eat.

NOTE: MSH use should not exceed 2-sprays per day and must not be used by persons with hyper-tension, (high blood pressure).

Oxytocin is a hormone produced in the hypothalamus and secreted into the blood by the pituitary gland.

Oxytocin has pain curbing abilities and could be efficacious in fibromyalgia. Other studies are highlighting that oxytocin

could be efficacious in the treatment of autism and even schizophrenias. But it is perhaps its ability to enhance bonding between partners that is likely to attract most attention. Oxytocin increases ejaculate in the male and has significant libido enhancement effects in females, including the inducement of multiple orgasms. We have worked alongside Dr. Hertoghe to create a practical and efficacious sublingual trouche (a gel like tablet). Typical doses are 5 to 20 IU. (The square troches can be cut in half from corner to corner easily).

Oxytocin (Oxy-Pro™)

Oxytocin has been described in detail in Dr. Thierry Hertoghe’s latest book- Passion, Sex and Adventure, the oxytocin story.

UPDATE: Oxy-Pro™ is a new nasal spray version of oxytocin (delivering 10 IU per spray) in addition to our 20 IU sublingual trouches (Oxy-Sub™).

These are the very latest technology from Professor Khavinson in Russia. They utilise highly specific peptides extracted from Danish bovine sources.

These peptides have been shown to be a short-cut to protein synthesis by activating directly with their receptive genes. Therefore their action is to ‘reinvigorate’ their respective gland/ organ, to induce their biological reserve and essentially rejuvenate their processes.

1.Bobothyrk® is the peptide for the parathyroid. 2.Bonomarlot® is the peptide for the bone marrow.3.Cerluten® is the peptide for the central nervous system (brain).4.Chelohart® is the peptide for the heart.5.Chitomur® is the peptide for the bladder.6.Endoluten® is the peptide for the pineal.7.Glandokort® is the peptide for the adrenal glands.8.Gotratix® is the peptide for the muscles.9.Libidon® is the peptide for the prostate gland.10.Pielotax® is the peptide for the kidneys.11.Sigumir® is the peptide for the cartilage.12.Stamakort® is the peptide for the stomach.13.Suprefort® is the peptide for the pancreas.14.Svetinorm® is the peptide for the liver.15.Taxorest® is the peptide for the lungs.16.Testoluten® is the peptide for the testes.17.Thyreogen® is the peptide for the thyroid.18.Ventfort® is the peptide for the blood vessels.19.Visoluten® is the peptide for the eye retina.20.Vladonix® is the peptide for the thymus.21.Zhenoluten® is the peptide for the ovaries.

UPDATE: The recommended course is to start at 2 capsules a day for 30-days (total 60 capsules). Afterward the course can be repeated at 2 capsules a day for 10-days (total 20 capsules) each quarter. Thus, after the initial intensive course all that is required are 4 boxes a year.

Progesterone levels decline in women with age; in some cases progesterone levels are undetectable!

Sermorelin is a breakthrough development in the field of growth hormone (GH) replacement. Sermorelin is the bioidentical molecule used by the pituitary gland to stimulate the production and release of GH into the bloodstream. Sermorelin is not GH; GH is a complicated molecule consisting of 191 amino acids. Sermorelin is a chain of 29 amino acids. Importantly it is the first 29 amino acids of GH, the part responsible for activation. This is what makes sermorelin stand head and shoulders over all previous agonists of GH. Sermorelin is GH site-specific and therefore very effective. What is more, sermorelin has a negative feedback loop (unlike GH itself), so the issues of overdosing and safety associated with injections of GH are minimized/ completely avoided. Sermorelin is stable at room temperature and efficacious when used sublingually. These are additional factors that favor sermorelin as the next generation of GH activators. We are excited to introduce this sublingual liquid version of sermorelin which has been created

Sermorelin (Serm-Pro™)

Retin-A contains retinolic acid, a pure form of vitamin A that enhances blood supply to the skin’s surface and transforms the thicker, tougher skin into more youthful looking, elastic and fresher skin. Retin-A is the cream of choice for cosmetic surgeons to speed up the wound healing of cosmetic surgery and scarring etc.

UPDATE: We now also supply the new Retin-A® micro-gel which is designed to sit on the skin surface and release slowly.

Retin-A® (Retirides®)

Piracetam was the very first nootropic, (commonly called smart drugs) to be developed. Despite being one of the very first products that IAS offered when we went online in 1991, it remains one of our best selling products today! Why? Because it is a very beneficial memory agent that has a great safety record, with very few side effects. Plus, it is cost effective. Piracetam has been shown to be safer than salt. This may be because it has a very small impact upon brain chemical levels and helps to improve electrical communication across the brain’s corpus callosum.

In medical terms piracetam is used to improve short term memory and to treat a wide variety of senile dementias as well as autism and Down’s syndrome and can also assist with travel and altitude sickness. Note: IAS offers the original UCB brand called Nootropil which is available in tablet and liquid form. The liquid form was specifically designed for children (it is sweetened with saccharin), but its advantages include being able to titrate low doses (if required) and also aid any person who has difficulty swallowing tablets.

NEW: A great value generic piracetam is now available under the name of Pira-Pro™.

Piracetam (Nootropil®; also see Anacervix®)

The corpus callosum is the bundle of nerves that separates the two hemispheres of the brain.

Progesterone Progesterone is often the ‘missing’ hormone in the treatment of female menopause. What we mean by this is that whilst estrogen treatments, (see Esnatri™ for details) are often considered as a primary replacement hormone for women, progesterone is often forgotten about. The best known action of progesterone is its ability to help build bone mass. Progesterone levels fall rapidly in menopause and contribute to osteoporosis. Progesterone is strongly advocated to be taken in combination with any estrogen replacement program.

UPDATE: Our progesterone strength is Pharma grade. At 5% it is twice the dose that is found in US health food stores.

PQQ is the most newly discovered vitamin. In more than 200 studies it has been shown to improve overall energy levels, cognitive function and memory, reduce mitochondrial degradation and increase skin elasticity. Furthermore, it acts as a neuro and cardio protectant and helps to enhance nerve growth.

Releasing-Pro is a unique nasal spray that is designed to carry GHRP-6 into the bloodstream. GHRP-6 is an analogue of Ghrelin that has been shown to have significant enhancement effects on IGF-1 levels.

PQQ (pyroloquinoline quinone)

A decline in the secretion of hormones from the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) can result in poor concentration, confusion, memory problems, cold hands and feet, weight gain, menstrual problems, sleep disorders, dry skin, thinning hair and low energy levels. An underactive thyroid is also a major cause of a common painful musculoskeletal condition known as fibromyalgia. Aging often leads to hypothyroidism. One of the most famous thyroid experts, Dr. Broda Barnes, stated that as many as 40% of the adult population could be hypothyroid. Thyroid supplements come in two forms; natural supplements and synthetic supplements. It is almost always better to use a whole-natural thyroid extract because the synthetic versions usually only comprise one of the thyroid hormones, (such as, T3 or T4), whereas, whole-natural thyroids cover a fuller spectrum of thyroid hormones (including T1, T2, T3 and T4). For further details about thyroid we recommended one of Dr. Hertoghe’s hormone handbooks.

Thyroid (Armour®; Synthroid®)

TRH is a hypothalamic hormone (technically a tri-peptide) whose real uses and benefits are just coming to the fore, primarily after research conducted by Dr. Walter Pierpaoli, the physician and scientist who exposed the benefits of melatonin to the world. Dr. Pierpaoli’s research suggests that TRH is a ‘master’ hormone responsible not just for helping to adjust thyroid hormones (its principle recognised role), but in helping to recorrect many imbalances throughout the body. For example in his animal experiments TRH supplements have encouraged old animals to:

• Re-establish spermogenesis, (reversing the age-related dysfunction of their testes).

• Correct kidney dysfunction, (a significant finding for renal issues).

• Correct pancreatic dysfunction, (a significant finding for diabetic issues).

• Improves many lipid profiles and aids weight loss when used over a few months.

IAS is delighted to be the first organisation in the world to offer a sublingual TRH tablet.

TRH (Abaris™)

TA65 contains a highly purified specialized extract of the Chinese herb astragalus. What makes this supplement totally unique is that it is the first natural substance that has been proven to act as a telomerase activator and to extend telomeres in humans (in-vivo). Telomeres are the strands on the ends of chromosomes that shorten each time the cell divides. This is a significant part of the destructive process of aging. Animals with longer telomeres enjoy a more productive and healthier older age and appear to live longer. TA65 production is carefully controlled by TA Sciences, who purchased the technology from the Geron Corporation. Whilst other substances have claimed to delay the shortening of telomeres, only TA65 has been clinically proven (and published) to actually lengthen short telomeres in humans. If you want the cutting-edge of antiaging supplementation and the best possible chances for longer telomeres, then TA65 is currently your best (and indeed only) clinically proven choice.

with the close cooperation of Dr. Richard Walker of SARA (Scientific Applied Research into Aging), a world renowned antiaging expert.

UPDATE: Sermorelin is synergistic with GHRP2 or GHRP6.

Vasopressin is a porcine extracted source for this pituitary hormone which has a number of interesting roles.

Its approved medical use is to prevent frequent urination in conditions such as diabetes insipidus. For example, men with prostate conditions can benefit by less trips in the night to urinate.

But vasopressin is also responsible for the laying down of memories in the hippocampus and it has been used to treat amnesia. In particular, it is cited by many for memory imprinting, this is the learning of new material before it is experienced. Therefore taking 1 or 2 sprays into each nostril 15-minutes before an exam, meeting or lecture etc., can induce a better detailed recall of events later.

ZeoGold Enhanced is the latest zeolite formula from world chelation and detox expert, Dr. Garry Gordon. In this new ‘enhanced’ formula Dr. Gordon has included the highest grade of zeolite for detox purposes along with the methylation agents and now added hydrogen for enhancement of energy.

Thierry Hertoghe, M.D.

“I am a 77 year old Physician who has practiced medicine for nearly half a century. My antiaging research has permitted me to overcome serious health problems. Everyone can do this, but it requires specialized knowledge and the highest quality products. IAS is a vital link in my antiaging program because they continually provide both accurate information AND the high quality products we all require, if we are to achieve our maximum intended useful lifespan.”

Garry Gordon, MD, DO, MD (H)

“Every adult has the right to take care of his or her own personal health as he or she chooses. In the 20th and 21st centuries, this universal human right has been nearly obliterated by an ocean of nanny-state regulation and deliberate suppression of information by bureaucracies, with hidden and not-so-hidden agendas. International Antiaging Systems is a beacon of useful health care information and a literal island of freedom of health care product choice in our otherwise un-free health care world.”

1. RegisteringThe first step is to become a member of the Paybyvoucher.com website. Registration is free with no monthly or annual charges levied against your account. Please be aware that Pay By Voucher

may request certain documents from you for verification purposes.

To successfully complete registration you have to confirm a One Time Pin (OTP) on the registration confirmation page. This pin will be sent to your mobile phone, so please make sure that you supply a valid mobile phone number.

Important things to remember

You should only set up one account with Pay By Voucher per email address or it causes a flag. If you have trouble, use the Pay By Voucher chat or customer service to get assistance, rather than just try to create a new account.

2. Register your credit cardFor security reasons Pay By Voucher require you to register your Credit Card. Once your Credit Card is registered every purchase is directly debited against your card.

Once registration is complete, you can start transacting.

Important things to remember

Paybyvoucher comply with the Card Association regulations and your CVV number is not recorded and/or stored on their database. You will have to supply the CVV number every time you make a purchase on Paybyvoucher.

The CVV is the digits on the back of your credit card.

3. Buying vouchersCreate your own value voucher by using the buy vouchers link and entering the value you require and submitting your request .

There is also the option to buy one of the pre-set amount vouchers but vouchers must be purchased to the specific value of the transaction otherwise the transaction cannot be successfully processed.

Select a merchant category - it is compulsory to select the type of merchant where the voucher will be redeemed as payment

A 36-bit unique voucher pin will then be sent to your mobile phone or email. Please copy and paste this PIN from Pay By Voucher to antiaging-systems.com. If typed you could make errors and the voucher will not process.

Important things to remember

• You should redeem vouchers bought from Pay By Voucher under the same name to your own sale on antiaging-systems.com. Mismatches in the name will cause flags and failed transactions.

• The country of Address and IP of the customer must match to the issuing bank of your card and the address you are using with you.

Purchased vouchers are also viewable in your Paybyvoucher.com account. Once a voucher is successfully redeemed on antiaging-systems.com the voucher will disappear from your account. If a voucher is only partially redeemed, the voucher will remain active in your user account for the remaining available balance.

We hope you find the guide helpful and can successfully process your transaction with us.
