HONOURS DEGREESThe traditional university level qualification, typically offered full-time over 3 years and delivered locally with fantastic study support and facilitiesavailable to all students.

FOUNDATION DEGREES/HNCSFull or part-time courses which are designed in conjunction with employersto support career progression. These qualifications are the equivalent to thefirst two years of an Honours Degree. In most cases you can progress to anHonours Degree after you have completed your Foundation Degree.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION/FOUNDATION DIPLOMASIf you have not studied for a while or perhaps don’t have formal qualificationsbut are interested in enrolling for a higher education course, then an accesscourse could be the ideal first step. You will learn study skills, including essaywriting and r esearch skills, and have the opportunity to top up yourknowledge in your chosen subject before committing to a degree course.

we have Five campuses providing our studentswith a broad range of facilities and courses.

Abingdon Campus is the largest of our campuses, and enjoysgreat facilities including an e-learning zone, space for HE students to meet and socialise, a sports centre and multi-gym. Work isunderway on four exciting phases of development which include anew café area and learning centre.

Witney Campus is situated in the centre of Witney and recentlyfinished its redevelopment. It offers first-class facilities for learningand leisure, including a friendly, good value café, well equippedlearning centre and hair and beauty salons.

Common Leys Campus is our Rural Skills Centre at Hailey,two miles north of Witney. This 60 acre campus provides specialistfacilities for Equine and Animal Behaviour students.

Avenue One is our state of the art dedicated construction centrewhich opened in 2011.

Milton Park is our business premise at Milton Park BusinessCentre near Abingdon.

Abingdon and Witney Campuses redevelopment

The Witney Campus is undergoing a £9m redevelopment to create newconstruction workshops and develop brand new classrooms and learningfacilities. The College has also been awarded £4m from the newOxfordshire Growth Deal announced through the Oxfordshire LocalEnterprise Partnership. The funding will result in the building of the newAdvanced Engineering and Technology Skills Centre at the AbingdonCampus that will help to address local and regional skills shortages inscience, technology, engineering and manufacturing (STEM) subjectareas and will build on the existing strength of the college in providingtraining of this type.

Learning Resource Centre

The resource area provides a wide range of print and electronicresources, including books, e-books, newspapers, magazines, journalsand DVDs to support you with all your study needs. Your student ID cardis also your library card.

The centre offers a suite of PCs for independent study, and you are alsowelcome to use your own laptops in this relaxed, fresh and modernenvironment. It is available to all students and there are staff on hand tohelp and offer support.

Exceptional lecturer support

24+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOAN Are you over 24 years old and thinking about taking a Level 3 or above course?

You can apply for a subsided loan which covers the full cost of yourcourse. You won’t need to repay the loan until you are earning over£21,000 per year and you won’t need to pay the fees upfront. Bursariesare also available for some learners who have taken out a loan so youcould have even more help with fees than you first thought. Want to talk to someone about funding? STUDENT FINANCE If you are applying for a course through UCAS you will be eligible for astudent finance loan. You don’t need to pay any tuition fees whilststudying for your Brookes degrees. Instead the government providesloans which you can start to pay back once you finish your course andare earning above £21,000 a year. Additional funding is available for disabled students, students withchildren, and students with adult dependents. This funding does notneed to be paid back. This course has been written in partnershipwith the School of Life Sciences at OxfordBrookes University and in consultation withleading local animal industries.

What will I study?

The course will develop themes in animalbehaviour and welfare.

Modules will include:

Work placements over a minimum of 25-30days are an essential part of the course where students will apply theoreticalknowledge gained in the classroom to thepractical care of animals.

Animal Behaviour and Welfare This broad-based degree has been developed to give students who are interested in

a rewarding career in a range of animal related industries, the knowledge and skills

they will need to be successful. It is designed for people who are wishing to enter the

The course is designed for those wanting toprogress into more challenging careers such asa clinical animal behaviourist, animal welfareinvestigator or within the field of animalresearch and health.

This course offers the latest academic insightsinto current research in animal behaviour, theirbiology and their welfare. This will equip youwith the skills and knowledge needed todevelop new ideas and evaluate currentprocesses and practices in both animalbehaviour and animal welfare science.

What will I study?

The Business strand

Introduces you to the scope and functions ofbusiness and will gradually develop yourunderstanding of the internal and externalenvironment in which businesses operate.

The BA (Hons) is a work-based degree and assuch lectures are concentrated on one day perweek, enabling students to work and combineprivate study to suit their own personalcommitments. On successful completion of thecourse, students are well equipped forgraduate employment in any aspect ofbusiness including marketing, humanresources, finance or management.

What will I study?

The programme offers the opportunity to studya wide range of current and relevant businesstopics including: • Managing marketing activities• Contemporary business issues• Communication, culture and language• Managing quality and risk• Self-awareness, career management• Work-based project or dissertation

The degree is run in partnership and validatedby Oxford Brookes University. This partnershipoffers students the opportunity to access thefull range of facilities both at the College and atthe University.

What will I study?

Students will study the following modules:

Year 1:

• Professional Issues and Skills – Coversstudy and professional skills, legal, socialand ethical issues relevant to the IT industry.

• Internet Technology 1 – Design and deployweb pages using HTML and CSS andunderstand some of the underlying network protocols.

• Mathematical Methods - Basicmathematical support for a range ofcomputing applications.

• Modern Computing Technology - Giveslearners a working knowledge of thefundamental concepts of computerprogramming.

• Introduction to Object OrientedProgramming - Fundamentals of object-oriented programming design,implementation and testing.

• Business Computing - Develop the

foundations for academic and professionalskills through the development of a phasedsoftware project.

Year 2:

• Internet Technology 2 - Dynamic web sitesusing PHP and SQL are designed anddeployed.

• Switched Local Area Networking – Coversthe fundamentals of networking on a smallto medium scale.

• Further Object-Oriented Programming -Advanced object-oriented paradigms suchas inheritance, polymorphism, packages,inner classes and generic classes.

• Data Structures - Design and implementprograms using abstract data types such asstack, queues, lists, trees and graphs.

• Database Analysis and Design – Industrystandard system analysis and designtechniques to design and developdatabases.

• Work-Based Project - A 4 week workplacement in the computing industry. Itallows students to create, design andmanage a work based project.

• Requirement Specification and SoftwareDesign - Principles, methods andtechniques for the specification andanalysis of users’ functional and non-functional requirements.

• Wide Local Area Networking - Introduceswide areas networks, their configurationand use within the modern technology age.

Career progression options

Many of our successful students progress on to a BSc in Computer Science at Oxford Brookes.

Foundation Degree

COMPUTING This degree is designed for people who enjoy working with computers and want to

learn more about the development of computers and technology. People who are

already working in IT will broaden their knowledge and gain recognition for their skills.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY

COURSE DURATION2 years, full-time

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSThree GCSE level qualifications at Grade C or above including English andMathematics and a minimum of one A Level or 40 UCAS tariff points.

Individuals with substantial experience inIT/Computing may be considered if theirapplication is supported by their employer.

Ideally, students should be currentlyworking within an IT environment.

Students who do not have thesequalifications will be considered for entryfollowing an interview.

Applicants whose first language is notEnglish must demonstrate that their levelof English is acceptable by achieving ascore in a recognised test such as BritishCouncil IELTS: level 6.0 overall with aminimum of 6.0 in the reading and writingcomponents or TOEFL minimum score of550 paper-based or 213 computer basedor 80 internet based.

The primary purpose of the course is to enableyou to identify your strengths and aptitudes sothat you can select and gain acceptance on toa specialist degree course suited to your needsand career plans.

The Foundation year provides a crucial linkbetween A Level and specialist degreecourses. At the same time it is a year ofexciting challenges and new pathways whichwe believe you will find both refreshing andrewarding.

What will I study?

You will explore a whole range of approachesto art and design with specialist tutors in thelarge purpose-built Arts Building.

The course starts broadly and becomes morespecialised as the year progresses.

Term One: you explore a wide range ofmaterials and processes through rapidintroductory projects.

Term Two: you will begin to consolidate yourgrowing sense of direction through theselection of three specialist options in areassuch as Graphics/Illustration, Fine Art,Fashion/Textiles, Photography, Film/Video etc.

HUMAN RESOURCEMANAGEMENT This course in Human Resource (HR) Management gives you the opportunity todevelop your professional HR knowledge after studying a CIPD Foundation Levelqualification or an intermediate level certificate. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT This course is designed for both managers and team leaders who are newly

promoted, or those who are aiming for a managerial position in the near future.

This qualification is highly regarded and hasbecome something of an industry standard forsupervisory management. The course is livelyand links all aspects of management theory tothe students workplace. The course has beenrun for many years and has been commendedby the ILM.

This course attracts students from a widerange of organisations, including many whohave not studied for a number of years andsome who have higher level qualifications inother subjects. The ILM qualification isnationally recognised and many employersrequire ILM membership from their supervisors.

• The UCAS website contains lots ofadvice on how to make an application.When you are ready, click on the ‘apply’button and register as an independentapplicant (unless you are applyingthrough a school or college). If they applythis way they will need the school orcollege buzz word.

• The personal statement is a vital part ofthe process as it gives you the chance tosell yourself and give an insight into yourexperience, skills and passion for thecourse. It is worth writing drafts of thestatement and getting feedback tomaximise your application.

• The UCAS application requires a widerange of information includingeducational qualifications, coursechoices, work history and your personalstatement. Once you have gathered allthe information the form is fairlystraightforward to complete.

• Students can apply for student loansfrom February online atwww.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login. Learners need to complete theirapplication by 30 May of the year theyare planning to start their highereducation course. For example, studentswill need to submit their application by30 May 2016 if their course starts inSeptember 2016.

• The application fee for one course is £12 and £23 for 2-5 courses. The feeneeds to be paid online before theapplication is accepted.

• The official UCAS deadline is 15 Januaryof the year you wish to start study (e.g.15 January 2016, for a September 2016start). However, if you apply by 30 Juneof that same year, your application willstill be sent through to the universities toconsider. Applications after this date gointo ‘clearing’, where students can applyand be considered for remaining placesfrom A-Level results day in August.

What are the entry requirements?

These vary from course to course. Please seethe detail contained within this guide or look onour website for further information. If you donot have traditional qualifications such as A Levels or BTECs, then do not worry – we canstill help. Our Access course provide an idealroute for people who have not studied forsome time or for people who have non-traditional educational backgrounds. Give us a call to discuss your options.

When do our courses start?

Most courses start in September each year,however some courses do start in January.Other courses run throughout the year andhave multiple start dates. Visit our website forup to date information about the latest startdates for the course you are interested in.

What is the cost and when do I need

to pay?

The cost of Higher Education qualificationsvary depending on which course you areinterested in.

The cost of Foundation Degrees is usually£6,000, whilst the cost of Honours Degrees in2015/16 is up to £9,000 per annum for full-timestudy. You can apply for a tuition fee loan tospread the cost of the fees for these courses.You will only need to repay this loan when youare earning more than £21,000 per year andonce you have finished your course. You onlypay back a percentage of your earnings above£21,000 per year which can work out to be avery affordable way to take a higher educationcourse. For example, if you earn £25,000 peryear your repayments will work out atapproximately £30 per month. If you never earnenough to repay your loan it will be written offafter 30 years.

The cost of professional courses variesconsiderably depending on the length of thecourse. Many of these cost considerably lessthan a Foundation Degree. Further details canbe found on our website.

Many students receive financial assistance orsponsorship from their employers. If a courseis related to your job role then you could askyour employer if they are willing to contributetowards your fees.

Disabled Students’ Allowance

If you are studying for a higher educationcourse and have a disability or learningdifficulty then you may be eligible for fundingsupport. This allowance is to cover additionalcosts which you may incur because of yourdisability, for example, provision of equipmentsuch as a computer. Call our student supportteam to find out more.

Am I a student of Oxford Brookes

University too?

If you are studying a Foundation Degree orHonours Degree delivered in partnership with Oxford Brookes University then yes, youare a student of theirs, too. You will have fullaccess to all of their facilities and yourgraduation ceremony will take place there. If you need to, you can even apply for a placein their halls of residence.

How much time do I need to study?

Again, this depends on the course you arestudying but all courses require you to study in your own time as well as attendingclassroom sessions. For most courses you willneed to put aside 10-15 hours per week forprivate study.

What support will you provide?

Abingdon and Witney College provides a widerange of support facilities and have experts onhand to help learners. Many of the coursescontain study skills support units and thefriendly student support team are alwaysavailable to help with financial or welfareworries. Individual learning support is availablefor those who need it.

Do I need to be in work to take one of

your higher education qualifications?

Not necessarily. For some courses, though,this is essential as your studies will build onyour day to day job role and help you to applytheoretical learning back into the workplace.Further detail can be found within the coursedescriptions in this guide.
