fried leeks. Normally when you order medium rare you get medium, but no! this was perfect a wonderful well balanced plate of flavours. I then had the Chocolate Brownie with Pistachio ice cream and my taste buds danced with delight, having eaten in Paris, this would pass in their best Bistros applause, applause.

My partner had the cheese platter, a well chosen generous selection of cheese, biscuits and fruit along with chutney, served appealingly on a cheese board. The evening was wonderful and for those of you out there moving home or just wanting an experience go along and enjoy! By Denise.

It may be unusual to find a restaurant review in a property guide, but having finally moved on tuesday,we didn’t have time to cook and felt like a celebration. A feeling i’m sure those of you in the system would share. So we were delighted to find Keez Bistro on Cecil Street.

This basement Bistro looks unassuming from the outside and could so easily be passed by....but shouldn’t be! The welcome was wonderful, the charming atmosphere and unhurried feeling made us relaxed and lose the bustle of the day. Our meal was wonderful! As an ex chef myself i’m hard to please but this meal couldn’t be faulted. We walked into savour their midweek £35 for 2 menu - This has two courses for two and a bottle or wine (Available Tuesday and Wednesday). Argentinean Malbec, the house wine was rather well chosen and soft.

We skipped the starter with regret, but a girl has to have desert! We had Venison loin with mustard mash and

On a more indulgent note, having seen, but never visited Iain & Louise Mckey’s ‘Keez Bistro’ at 50/52 Cecil Street; my partner and I walked down the steps on Tuesday night to the wonderfully welcoming and charming basement bistro and took advantage of the midweek offer ‘Two Courses for Two’ including a bottle of wine for £35. Wow! Fantastic! Food, wine and ambience couldn’t be faulted. See Denise’s comments opposite.

With the return to school and end of holidays marking the end of the summer lull in the property market, business now builds to its traditional peak at the end of the autumn months. October & November are busy months for home improvements prior to Christmas, so remember to contact your tradesmen early! From experience a carpet fitter can’t be found for love or money in December so ‘Book Early’.

The Environmental Hit SquadThe Clean Teamsee £376, 000 worth of funding over two years being invested in the Carlisle team.

The Clean Team has already begun addressing the environmental grot spots, unkempt gardens, weeds, graffiti and fly tipping and are working in partnership with Carlisle City Council, other social landlords and ISS Waterers who deliver Riverside’s grounds maintenance contract.

The Clean Team is also able to provide assistance on gardening skills, recycling and monitor abandoned vehicles and environmental crime.

Time to complete job: This is a weekend project for a small to medium-sized room.Approximate budget: From about £5 per square metre.

First stepsLaminate floors are hard wearing but only certain types are suitable for bathrooms and kitchens, so check before buying.

You can make the job quicker and less messy by using locktogether laminate that doesn’t need gluing. This means you will also be able to take up the boards easily and re-lay them somewhere else in the future.

Before buying your laminate, measure the width of your room at the widest points and then measure the length. Multiply them together to give you the area of your room in square metres. You should then add 10% for wastage. Ask in-store for assistance if you are unsure how much flooring to purchase.

Step 1: Preparing the floorLaminate flooring can be laid on any smooth, flat sub-floor as long as it’s dry, firm and level. Make sure floorboards are firmly screwed down and flatten all nails with a hammer.

If you have an old, uneven concrete floor use a self-levelling compound. This is a free flowing, self-smoothing material which dries flat and level. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Take off the skirting boards. You can replace them later on top of the laminate or add timber mouldings to hide the edges of the new floor. Remove any grit from the floor with a vacuum.

Roll out the first two strips of underlay along the longest straight wall, starting in one corner. Cut the underlay with a craft knife.

Step 2: Laying the first rowTo allow the laminate to expand as the room is heated, place plastic spacers every 60cm (24in) along the longest straight wall and lay the first row of boards with the groove side facing the wall, starting from a corner.

Squeeze a bead of glue along the tongue and groove joints at the ends of the boards. You will probably need to cut the last board of the row to fit. Mark a line across the piece with a try square and saw with the finished surface facing up. Don’t forget to wear your safety specs!

Step 3: Laying and fittingContinue laying the laminate across the room. Begin the second row with the off-cut of the board used at the end of the first row. Stagger all the end joints by at least 30cm (12in) and use a fitting tool to pull the ends of the boards together. Make sure the edges of the boards are forced together by gently tapping the hammering block against the grooved side of each board.

Step 4: Working around fixturesCutting boards around doorways can be fiddly. Instead, saw a piece from the bottom of the door architrave to the thickness of the laminate - the board can then be fitted under the door frame.

Drill holes in the laminate boards to fit around any pipework - make sure the hole is at least 5mm (0.2in) larger than the diameter of the pipe. Make two saw cuts from the edge of the board to the hole. Fit the board in place and glue the small off-cut wedge behind the pipe.

Step 5: FinishingThe last row of boards may need to be cut to fit. Measure the gap between the boards and the wall, deduct 10mm (0.4in) to allow for the expansion gap and saw the boards lengthways to the width required. Glue the joints and fit.

Replace the skirting boards or fix a timber moulding over the expansion gap around the edge of the floor. Fix the moulding to the skirting board with 30mm (1.2in) panel pins and paint or varnish. Finally, fit a metal or wooden threshold across the door openings.
