Please help us to fine tune this, so that we can have the best possible mission statement going for-ward. “Our New Parish crisscrosses many miles of Washington and Allegheny Counties. All are welcomed at our doors and are nourished through vibrant Liturgies thus fed by Word and Sacrament to preach with joy the Gospel of Jesus Christ and share the love and compassion of Jesus Christ to all especially the poor and needy.”

The Living Word Today we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy

Body and Blood of Christ, also referred to as Corpus Christi. In this Sunday’s Gospel, we hear the miracle story of

Jesus feeding a crowd of at least five thousand people. Prior to today’s passage, Jesus had sent the apostles out to pro-claim the Kingdom of God; upon returning, massive crowds of people had followed the Twelve. Jesus then began teaching and healing them. As night drew near, Jesus instructed the apostles to feed the crowd but all they had were five loaves and two fish. Jesus took these meager offerings and looked up to heaven, He blessed them, broke them, and gave them to His apostles to share with the crowd. When all “ate and were satisfied,” they gathered twelve wicker baskets of lefto-ver fragments. We should take note that this is the only mira-cle story to appear in all four Gospels. Why is this event so significant to the Catholic Church and our faith?

The miraculous feeding stories are seen as the fore-shadowing of Jesus’ gift of the Eucharist that He gave to His Church at the Last Supper. During Mass, we celebrate this gift of charity from God that allows us to commune with Christ in the most intimate of ways. Since the Eucharist is “the source and summit” of our Christian faith, our words and ac-tions should flow from the Sunday celebration of the Eucha-rist. As we approach the table, we should have a deep hunger to become one with the Father through the Body and Blood of Christ, so that we may be strengthened by the Holy Spirit to do God’s work. Therefore, whenever we receive the Eucharist at Mass, we should not consume it passively. The Body and Blood of Christ is spiritual nourishment that will lead us to active participation and ministry to others. Upon reception, our “Amen” should acknowledge, not only a belief in the four modes of the real presence of Jesus ( in the bread and wine, in the priest at consecration, in the proclaimed Word, and in ourselves) but also our willingness to become an apostle of Christ and spread His teachings to the world. After all, the word “apostle” means “one who is sent.” In today’s passage, Jesus did not distribute the loaves and fish Himself, but rather gave them to His apostles for distribution. After the crowds had eaten their fill of the meager offering, twelve wicker bas-kets of fragments were gathered. With God’s help, we, too, can do copious things by using the meager offering of our gifts and talents to bring Christ into the world.

Will you allow the Eucharist to transform you this

week? Will Christ’s peace, love, and compassion replace any anger, hatred, or ill-will you are harboring in your heart? Are you willing to be the face of Christ to others?

Jay Speca – Director of Faith Formation
