for Mineral Technology, Randburg (South Africa) -- [en] This report describes the analysis of special corrosion-resistant steels for ruthenium, palladium, and platinum by X-ray-fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS) and a thin-film technique. The precision of this method varies from 1 to 7 per cent, depending upon the analyte and its concentrations. The accuracy is good and compares favourably with that of other methods. The direct determination of these elements on solid samples with the use of scattered radiation as a matrix correction is only partly successful and is not recommended. The three platinum-group elements, iron, and chromium can be determined successfully in solid samples by XRFS if an empirical interelement correction method is used. The correction factors are determined by a multiple-regression method. The precision of the determination of the platinum-group elements is about 1 per cent and that of iron and chromium about 0,2 per cent. The accuracy is in most cases better than 2 per cent for all the elements determined. The method can be implemented with the use of available computer software and a small microcomputer. The two recommended laboratory methods are given as appendices to the report SubjectINORGANIC, ORGANIC, PHYSICAL AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (B1110) Source/Report29 Aug 1986; 28 p; MINTEK-M--269; ISBN 0 86999 761 0 Record TypeReport Country/Org.South Africa Ref. X-ray fluorescence analysis of ytterbium oxide/oxalate for rare earth impurities 481 KB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/14/798/14798143.pdf - Text Version by Chandola, L.C.; Khanna, P.P.; Thomas, A. (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Spectroscopy Div.); Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India) -- [en] An XRF method for the determination of Ho, Er, Tm, Lu and Y oxides in Yb2O3 is described. 450 mg sample in the oxalate form is mixed with 150 mg boric acid binding material and pressed into 1.25 inch diameter pellet over a supporting pellet of boric acid. The sample is irradiated by X-rays from a tungsten tube and the fluorescent X-rays are dispersed by a LiF(200) crystal in a Philips PW 1220 semiautomatic X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. The intensities of characteristic X-rays of the impurity elements are measured by a flow proportional counter or a scintillation counter. The lowest determination limit is 0.005% for Ho, Er, Tm and Y and 0.01% for Lu. Calculations for theoretical detection limit, standard deviation and uncertainty are done and presented. by Havranek, E.; Nemcikova, A.; Schiller, P. -- [en] The claim of the patent is the determination of inorganic or organic substances which after being converted into a solution react with the volumetric agent with the generation of insoluble, or little dissociated compounds. The volumetric solution or the substance being determined must contain elements which can be determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis. The substance being determined is let to chemically react with excess of the reagent. The non-reacted amount of the reagent is separated from the reaction product. The defined volume of the solution is deposited on a strip of chromatographic paper and the contents are determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis, either directly or indirectly from the excess of the reagent or by comparison with the standard. Improvement in accuracy of X-ray fluorescence analysis taking into account regularization parameter when deriving calibration equations 730 KB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/19/094/19094852.pdf - Text Version by Svetajlo, Yu.N.; Shchekin, K.I. fromRadiation technology -- [en] Sources of sufficient errors, which occur during mathematical processing of results of X-ray fluorescence analysis are analyzed. It is shown that construction of regression calibration equations when conducting multi-element X-ray fluorescence analysis can be complicated by correlated character of measured counting rates and low capacity of applied computing equipment (microprocessors and microcomputers). It is suggested to take into account the regularization parameter when solving the so-called incorrect problems; this will enable to improve the accuracy of analysis. Example of using regularization parameter for analysis of polymetallic ores is given. It is advisable to introduce the construction of calibration equations, taking into account the regularization parameter, into the software of multi-element X-ray fluorescence analyzer with semiconductor detector, based on microprocessor or microcomputer Orig. In vivo X-ray fluorescence analysis for medical diagnosis 2 MB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/12/638/12638588.pdf - Text Version by Groenberg, T.; Lund Univ. (Sweden). Radiofysiska Institutionen -- [en] A Monte Carlo code has been constructed and used to simulate the energy distribution of scattered photons abtained in various in vivo X-ray fluorescence measurements. The structure of this distribution has been investigated and discussed. Studies of the response function of the Ge-decector used have

Page 7: XRFAa.pdf

made it possible to convert the calculated scatter spectra to pulse-height distributions. These studies have shown to be valuabel tools in designing in vivo X-ray fluorescence measurements. In vivo X-ray fluorescence measurements have been used for quantitative non-invasive measurements of the concentration of iodine-containing contrast media in rabbits without the use of blood or urine sampling. The biological half-life of the contrast medium in the soft tissue part of the nose (measured in vivo) was similar to that in serum (measured in vitro) when determined in the period 2-4 hours after injection. This result indicate the possibility of being able to use the method for clinical evaluation of kidney function. The method has been used in patients referred for urography and who had teherefore been injected with routine amounts of iodinecontaining urographic contrast medium. After urography, the elimination rates of urographic contrast medium from both serum and finger tissue were determined and copared during a two-hour period which began two hours after injection of contrast medium. A strong degree of correlation was found between the elimination rates from serum and finger tissue and also between the total clearances calculated from the serum and finger measurements respectively. Thus, after radiographic examinations quantitative estimation of kidney function may be obtained as a fringe benefit by external X-ray fluorescence measurements of the elimination from tissue of the contrast medium used. an energy resolution of 200 eV at 5.9 Kev MnKsub(α) X-ray peak for ENDXRF analysis. A simple procedure of calibration has been developed for thin samples based on the cellulose diluted, thin multielement standard pellets. Analytical sensitivities of the order of a few p.p.m. have been obtained with the experimental setup for elements with 20 < = Z < = 38 and 60 < = Z < = 90. A number of X-ray spectra for samples of environmental, biological, agricultural, industrial and metallurgical interest are presented to demonstrate the salient features of the experimental sep up. by Hagan, R.C.; Los Alamos National Lab., NM (USA) -- [en] An automated wavelength-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometer is operational for analysis of major elements in rocks and minerals. Procedures for trace-element analysis are being developed. Sample preparation methods and analytical techniques are similar to those commonly used elsewhere, but data reduction is conducted by the Fundamental Parameters program developed by Criss. Unlike empirically derived calibration curves, this data reduction method considers x-ray absorption and secondary fluorescence, which vary with differences in sample composition. X-ray intensities for each element from several standards are averaged to develop a theoretical standard for comparison with samples of unknown composition. Accurate data for samples with wide compositional ranges result from these data reduction and standardization techniques SubjectGEOSCIENCES (B3100), INORGANIC, ORGANIC, PHYSICAL AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (B1100) Source/ReportSep 1982; 14 p; LA--9400-MS; Available from NTIS, PC A02/MF A01 as DE83003968 Record TypeReport Country/Org.United States Ref. Some rapid methods using an unique calibration curve have been developed for multi-elemental X-ray fluorescence analysis of thin and thick layers of various samples having low contents of heavy elements. The matrix absorption effect in thick samples is taken into account according to the scattered radiation. The similar method using a unique calibration curve for determination of low contents of trace elements in thin layers without account of matrix effect is proposed. The results on the intercomposition run soil-5 are in good agreement with the data obtained in different laboratories. The errors of the method are 10 %; in a case of peak superposition - 15 % Orig. The NbK sub(Ab) line, although not under the overlapping effect of the uranium lines as the NbK sub(β) line, although not under the overlapping effect of the uranium lines as the NbK sub(α) is, presents a more intensive absorption effect than this last one; on the other hand the ZrK sub(α) and ZrK sub(β) lines are under the overlapping effect of the uranium spectrum. Such interferences are mathematically corrected by means of relations between the intensities of the lines for the elements and those for the uranium. The technique for the preparation of the samples is the double layer pressed pellet. From the different corrections the best method has showed a precision of 5%. (Author)

by Kuncir, J.; Benada, J. (Ustav Nerostnych Surovin, Kutna Hora (Czechoslovakia)) fromMethods of geochemical prospecting -- [en] The radionuclide X-ray fluorescence analysis can be used for the qualitative and quantitative determination of elements between Ca and U. It uses a principle identical to that of the conventional X-ray spectral analysis. For excitation, however, a suitable radionuclide is used and for spectrum analysis radiation detectors are applied. Analyzers are frequently designed as portable instruments suitable also for field measurement. The detection limit of elements depends on their atomic number and lies between 0.1 and 0.O1%. More complex types use semiconductor radiation detectors with better energy resolution, allowing to determine elements from sulfur to uranium. A computer is used for rapid evaluation of measured values. Examples are shown of different types of X-ray fluorescence analyzers. (Ha) Orig. X-ray fluorescence analysis of high purity rare earth oxides for common trace rare earth impurities 1 MB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/22/054/22054219.pdf - Text Version by Chandola, L.C.; Dixit, R.M.; Khanna, P.P.; Deshpande, S.S.; Machado, I.J.; Kapoor, S.K. (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Spectroscopy Div.); Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India) -- [en] Methods for the determination of individual trace common rare earth (RE) elements have been developed for fifteen RE oxide matrices viz. La2O3 to Lu2O3 and Y2O3. In general, for each matrix, two or three neighbouring elements on both sides of the matrix element are determined. The minimum determination limit (MDL) achieved is 0.002% for most of the elements. Special efforts were made to use a small amount of sample (as low as 400 mg) for the analysis by the use of double layer pellet technique and critical thickness studies. Practical experiences with 15 RE matrices, most of which are investigated for the first time, are discussed. Details of selection of instrumental parameters and analysis lines, precision and accuracy and preparation of samples and synthetic standards are given. Theoretical minimum detection limit (TMDL) for each analyte element is calculated in all the 15 matrices. Comparative experimental study of PIXE and X-ray fluorescence analysis 1 MB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/26/000/26000015.pdf - Text Version by Vega B, L.R. De la.; Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Mexico City (Mexico). Facultad de Ciencias -- [en] PIXE and X RF techniques are powerful analysis instruments in the determination of traces of elements. Although the physical processes characteristic X-rays production (ionization-emission) are similar in both methods, the representative background of each technique, responsible of its sensitivity, are different. This is because the interaction between exciter agents and the matter produces different effects. In PIXE, the background is caused by the radiation produced by the braking of the secondary electrons: Bremsstrahlung. In X RF, the background is due to the elastic and inelastic scattering of photons: Rayleigh and Compton effects. In this work, we have compared the results of the analysis of environmental samples using both methods, in order to know the scope of each one and develop them as complementary techniques. (Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest. Central Research Inst. for Physics); Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest. Central Research Inst. for Physics -- [en] Radioisotope-induced X-ray fluorescence analysis is a rather simple and easy method for investigating ashed plant material. In order to reduce matrix effects thin samples of 2 mg/cm2 are analysed to obtain a reasonable compromise between maximum sensitivity and the lowest possible absorption effects. Concentrations are determined by standard addition method. An accuracy of 6-8% can be achieved. As an application analytical results are given for whole grains of several sorts of wheat. Text Version by Markowicz, A.; Institute of Physics and Nuclear Techniques, Cracow (Poland) -- [en] The recent applications of scattered radiation in X-ray fluorescence analysis are reviewed. The scattered radiation methods based on measurements both of the coherent and incoherent scatter peaks can be applied for a correction of the absorption matrix effect, evaluation of background in X-ray spectra and determination of mass per unit area of the samples to be analysed. The use of the scattered primary radiation enables one to analyse samples of intermediate thickness by XRF method; this extends considerably the practical application of the analytical techniques. A theoretical evaluation of the potentialities as well as the limits of the applicability of the relative scattered radiation method has also been given. 35 refs., 4 figs. (author) Orig. Proceedings of contributions -- [en] The work presents the project of author's thesis called X-ray-fluorescence analysis. This paper describes the nuclear analytical methods and explains a principle of its operation. Interested persons can get to know what the X-ray fluorescence analysis is, anyway, as there is called X-ray fluorescence, how it develops its formation, how this radiation interacts with matter and how to detect it. Whereas in the thesis have been carried out no experimental measurements yet, this work is only theoretical in nature. It has been concluded which way and how the work on thesis will continue. Geesthacht-Tesperhude (Germany, F.R.) -- [en] Using an additional reflector plate between the tube and the sample holder and indirect irradiation of the sample, a low-pass type shaping of the X-ray spectrum is achieved, which is directed on the sample holder. Thus only the low-energy excitation radiation is reflected, in contrast to the high-energy component, which is scattered diffusively. The tube can be operated with about 60 kV lowering the detection limit. A certain independency from the anode material is obtained. (DG)

(DG) Orig. (Sweden) -- [en] Measurements on five occupationally exposed persons have shown that it is possible to use X-ray fluorescence analysis for in vivo measurements of lead in the skeleton. The technique for calibrating in vivo X-ray fluorescence measurements of lead in bone tissue has been studied in detail and a two-component phantom simulating the bone and the soft tissue parts of the finger constructed. The technique has been used for in vivo measurements on 22 occupationally exposed persons. The minimum detectable concentration of lead in fingerbones was found to be around 20 μg x g-1. The lead concentrations in their skeletons and blood were compared: the correlation was poor. The variations in lead concentrations in the skeleton have been studied in occupationally exposed persons and in samples from archaeological skeletons. The sensitivity and the minimum detectable concentration of cadmium in the kidney cortex in in vivo measurements has been studied by measurements on kidney models. The minimum detectable concentration was 20 μg x g-1 at a skin-kidney distance of 30 mm and 40 μg x g-1 at 40 mm. Five persons occupationally exposed were studied. Text Version by Koloskov, S.A.; Svetajlo, Yu.N.; Shchekin, K.I. fromRadiation technology -- [en] Automatic classification of samples is suggested in order to provide the assigned accuracy of X-ray fluorescence analysis. The classification lies in the following: the whole body of analyzed samples is devided into assigned number of classes and regression equation is derived for each class. Each sample is refered automatically during analysis to its own class, and concentrations are calculated according to equations, corresponding to this class. Algorithm of sample classification is presented; examples of analysing complex lead-barite ore and products of its technological treatment is given. The suggested algorithm was realized in the software of automized multi-element analyzers with semiconductor detectors. The method can be widely used at the stage of search for minerals Orig. Instrumental aspects of tube-excited energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis 8 MB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/15/020/15020483.pdf - Text Version by Adams, F.; Nullens, H.; Espen, P. van (Rijksuniversitair Centrum te Antwerpen (Belgium)) fromData acquisition and analysis systems for nuclear research and applications. Current status and trends -- [en] Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is an attractive and widely used method for sensitive multi-element analysis. The method suffers from the extreme density of spectral components in a rather limited energy range which implies the need for computer based spectrum analysis. The method of iterative least squares analysis is the most powerful tool for this. It requires a systematic and accurate description of the spectral features. Other important necessities for accurate analysis are the calibration of the spectrometer and the correction for matrix absorption effects in the sample; they can be calculated from available physical constants. Ours and similar procedures prove that semi-automatic analyses are possible with an accuracy of the order of 5%. (author) Orig. Sampling and analytical methodologies for energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis of airborne particulate matter 2 MB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/26/004/26004624.pdf - Text Version -- [en] The present document represents an attempt to summarize the most important features of the different forms of ED-XFR as applied to the analysis of airborne particulate matter. It is intended to serve as a set of guidelines for use by participants in the IAEA's own programmes, and other scientists, who are not yet fully experienced in the application of ED-XRF to airborne particulate samples, and who wish either to make a start on using this technique or to improve their existing procedures. The methodologies for sampling described in this document are of rather general applicability. Emphasis is also placed on the sources of errors affecting the sampling of airborne particulate matter. The analytical part of the document describes the different forms of ED-XRF and their potential applications. Spectrum evaluation, a key step in X-ray spectrometry, is covered in depth, including discussion on several calibration and peak fitting techniques and computer programs especially designed for this purpose. 148 refs, 25 figs, 13 tabs SubjectINORGANIC, ORGANIC, PHYSICAL AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (B1110), ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES (B3350) Source/Report1993; 91 p; NAHRES--16 Record TypeReport Country/Org.International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) LanguageEnglish Ref. (Instytut Chemii i Techniki Jadrowej, Warsaw (Poland)) fromPapers of All-Polish Conference on Nuclear Techniques in Industry, Medicine, Agriculture and Environmental Protection -- [en] Multivariate statistical analysis of the results obtained by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis has been used in the study of baroque vessel glasses originated from central Europe. X-ray spectrometry can be applied as a completely non-destructive, non-sampling and multi-element method. It is very useful in the studies of valuable historical artefacts. For the last years, multivariate statistical analysis has been developed as an important tool for the archaeometric purposes. Cluster, principal component and discriminant analysis were applied for the classification of the examined objects. The obtained results show that these statistical tools are very useful and complementary in the studies of historical objects. (author) Orig. Annual symposium of the Austrian Physical Society -- [en] A comparison between μ-x-ray fluorescence tomography and confocal μ-x-ray fluorescence analysis (μ-XRF) will be presented. These techniques were used to study the three dimensional (3D) elemental distribution in human bone. Since bone shows very strong inhomogeneities in structure as well as in distribution of the chemical elements, two dimensional (2D) analysis (element mapping) of the samples always led to difficulties in interpreting the results and assigning elemental distributions to microscopic structures. Tomography scans in fluorescence and absorption mode have been carried out simultaneously at the fluo-topo beamline at ANKA, Karlsruhe, to determine the distribution of the elements over the depth of the previously prepared sample from human patella. A monochromatized x-ray beam (17 keV) from a bending magnet station focused by a compound refractive lens to a beamsize of 10 x 5 μm was used to perform the measurements. The transmitted beam signal measured with the SD detector was utilized to apply a simplified absorption correction to XRF tomographic images. Based on the XRF sinograms the elemental distribution within the object cross-section was reconstructed by means of filtered backprojection. The same section of human bone has been analyzed by confocal μ-XRF at HASYLAB, Hamburg, Germany beamline L. With this experiment two polycapillary half lenses were used; one for focusing the previously monochromatized primary x-ray beam onto the sample and the second half lens in front of a Si(Li) detector to get a small inspected area. By overlapping the two foci of the lenses a very well defined volume of investigation could be defined. Scanning the sample up- and downstream it was possible to determine the elemental distribution in depth of the sample. An absorption correction has been applied to get a corrected fluorescence image of the sample. Both methods showed consistent results and allowed a precise localization of the elements of interest. Distribution of elements in brain tissue samples was studied using Microbeam X-Ray Fluorescence (MXRF) method. Total Reflection X-Ray fluorescence (TXRF) analysis was applied for determination of elemental contens in cerebrospinal fluid, serum and whole blood. The main goal of the study was to optimize analytical procedures for investigation of biomedical specimens using EDXRF method. MXRF method is useful for investigation of P, S, Cl, K, Ca and Fe. Moreover, it can be also applied for distinguishing between white and gray matter of the human brain. Two sample preparation methods were applied in TXRF spectrometry with respect to detection limit. In the first

method the body fluids were analysed without any sample preparation. The other measurements were performed for the body fluids digested with nitric acid. For both methods gallium was used as an internal standard. Accuracy of the TXRF method was assessed using Certified Reference Material, A-13 (freeze-dried animal blood). High sensitivity of TXRF and proper sample preparation allowed to detect wide spectrum of elements between Cl and Sr. Faster and easier first sample preparation method allowed to detect elements including volatile ones like Cl or Br whereas digestion of fluids with nitric acid improved the detection limits significantly. Elemental analysis of thin brain tissue samples and body fluids will be applied for study of role of trace elements in selected neurological diseases. (author) Orig. Technology - the challenge of the 21st century -- [en] The design of an energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer equipped with a conventional X-ray tube and secondary target is described. The spectrometer system constructed in our laboratory consists of a semiconductor detector system, irradiation chamber and X-ray tube. Primary source from X-ray tube was used to produced secondary X-ray from selenium, molybdenum and cadmium targets. The fluorescence X-ray from the sample was detected using Si(Li) detector with resolution of 0. 175 keV (Mn-K(x). The spectrometer was used for determination of multi-elements with atomic number between 20 to 44 in river sediment samples. The X-ray spectrum, from the samples were analysed using computer software which was developed based on Marquardt method. This paper describes the assay of uranium by X-ray fluorescence analysis in aqueous, nitric solutions and in solid samples after fusion with spectromelt A12 (66% Li2B4O7, 34% LiBO2). There is a linear relationship between the measured intensity and the concentration of uranium only up to about 3 mg U/g. In order to correct effects from the matrix the method of the internal standard, the methods of the correction by scattering radiation as well as addition and dilution methods have been applied too. The measurements were performed both with a wavelength dispersive and with an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer; better results were obtained with the wavelength dispersive spectrometer. In agreement with the literature, the errors were smaller for the aqueous solutions than for the solid solutions SubjectINORGANIC, ORGANIC, PHYSICAL AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (B1110) Source/ReportOffice of Atomic Energy for Peace, Bangkok (Thailand); 440 p; 1988; p. by Rackwitz, Vanessa; Bundesanstalt fuer Materialforschung und -pruefung (BAM), Berlin (Germany); Humboldt-Universitaet, Berlin (Germany). Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultaet 1 -- [en] For a decade X-ray sources have been commercially available for the microfocus X-ray fluorescence analysis (μ-XRF) and offer the possibility of extending the analytics at a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an attached energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). By using the μ-XRF it is possible to determine the content of chemical elements in a microscopic sample volume in a quantitative, reference-free and non-destructive way. For the reference-free quantification with the XRF the Sherman equation is referred to. This equation deduces the intensity of the detected X-ray intensity of a fluorescence peak to the content of the element in the sample by means of fundamental parameters. The instrumental fundamental parameters of the μ-XRF at a SEM/EDS system are the excitation spectrum consisting of X-ray tube spectrum and the transmission of the X-ray optics, the geometry and the spectrometer efficiency. Based on a calibrated instrumentation the objectives of this work are the development of procedures for the characterization of all instrumental fundamental parameters as well as the evaluation and reduction of their measurement uncertainties: The algorithms known from the literature for the calculation of X-ray tube spectrum are evaluated with regard to their deviations in the spectral distribution. Within this work a novel semi-empirical model is improved with respect to its uncertainties and enhanced in the low energy range as well as extended for another three anodes. The emitted X-ray tube spectrum is calculated from the detected one, which is measured at an especially developed setup for the direct measurement of X-ray tube spectra. This emitted X-ray tube spectrum is compared to the one calculated on base of the model of this work. A procedure for the determination of the most important parameters of an X-ray semi-lens in parallelizing mode is developed. The temporal stability of the transmission of X-ray full lenses, which have been in regular use at the μ-XRF source for several years, is examined. The procedure for the determination of the spectrometer efficiency in the laboratory is extended to 50 keV. Besides this methodological development applications for the newly characterized instrumental fundamental parameters are presented. The reference-free quantification of μ-XRF spectra of representative samples is performed. The limits of detection of the μ-XRF at the SEM are determined for heavy trace elements in light matrices by the example of specimens that were prepared an EU directive. It is investigated if the consideration of the X-ray scattering properties of a sample can extend the XRF analysis. (orig.) Orig. Use of X-ray fluorescence analysis for the determination of hafnium in zircalloys 211 KB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/17/018/17018600.pdf - Text Version by Sato, I.M.; Salvador, V.L.R.; Lordello, A.R.; Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares, Sao Paulo (Brazil) -- [en] The determination of hafnium at trace levels (ppm) in the presence of zirconium by X-ray fluorescence technique is presented. The samples were prepared in the form of double-layer pellets, with boric acid as the binding material. The most sensitive first order line of hafnium HfLα (0.157 nm), which is used analyticaly, has approximately 67% overlapping with second order line of zirconium ZrKα1, (0.079 nm). As the excitation potencial of zirconium is larger than hafnium, the best condition was selected, so that the interference of zirconium intensity would not be significant in hafnium analytical line. The method allowed the determination of hafnium above 5.0 ppm (LLd = 1.5 ppm) with an accuracy of less than 10%. (Author)

AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (B1100) Source/Report30 Jun 1975; 26 p; NIM--1719; ISBN 0869991531 Record TypeReport Country/Org.South Africa Ref. Method for the X-ray fluorescence analysis of suspensions 212 KB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/09/360/9360581.pdf - Text Version by Gurvich, Yu.M.; Mezhevich, A.N.; Nikolaev, V.P.; Pavlinskij, G.V.; Plotnikov, R.I.; Rogachev, I.M. -- [en] A new X-ray fluorescent method for analysing suspensions consisting in the cell-mounted sample irradiation by an X-ray radiation flux and characteristic radiation registration is offered. The present method differs in that, in order to superimpose the particle size measuring operation and the operation of measuring the suspension-contained element concentrations, additional measurements are made of intensities of at least two unsimilar secondary radiation wave lengths. Two wave length radiation scattered on the sample, or a sample-scattered radiation and a cell back wall material characteristic radiation, or a characteristic radiation from two elements, e.g. Cd and Ba, added to cell back wall material can be used as additionally registered secondary radiations. Equations by the use of which it is possible to predict the concetration of the elemnt determined, and also average particle size are included. The invention may be used for testing and control in mineral ore processing plants both for direct estimation of the ore/product particle size, and for making corrections of the results of the which, too, depend on the average particle size

Application of radioisotope X-ray fluorescence analysis for determination of heavy metals impurities in Kufic silver coins 970 KB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/08/305/8305577.pdf - Text Version by Stos-Fertner, Z.; Florkowski, T.; Institute of Physics and Nuclear Techniques, Krakow (Poland) -- [en] X-ray fluorescence analysis using radioisotope sources for excitation of characteristic X-ray lines and solid state silicon detector for analysis of X-ray spectra is a valuable method for non-destructive, rapid and sensitive analysis of elemental composition. This method has been used not only for silver determination in various coins but also for determination of metallic impurities such as Pb, Bi, Hg and Au in pure silver coins. Presence and concentration of these impurities is of great interest as indication of origin of silver ore. Two hundreds dirhams originating from early middle ages hoards found in Poland, minted in the period of 95 A.H. to 387 A.H. (713/14-997/8 A.D.) in the North Africa, Near East and Asian Arabian mints have been analysed. Differences in heavy metals concentration have been found which correlate with the origin of coins minted in various parts of the Arabian imperium. Such information may be of importance for identification of Arabian mints and silver mines. A first layer (layer thickness about 200 μm) of highly pure aluminium (degree of purity 99.999%) is coated with a second layer of highly pure eloxal (layer thickness about 13 μm). It is necessary for the investigation of elements with atomic number Z > = 31 to have a galvanic layer of Fe, Ni or Cu under the Al layer. This type of layer system is also advantageous for other apparatus such as, e.g., for certain components of X-ray equipment. (RW/LH)

Determination of uranium and thorium by X-ray fluorescence analysis in ores and derivatives 1 MB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/10/472/10472380.pdf - Text Version by Sato, I.M.; Instituto de Energia Atomica, Sao Paulo (Brazil) -- [en] A method to determinate the elements thorium and uranium by X-rays fluorescence in ores and derivatives is presented. The chosen samples are ores from Morro do Agostinho, Pocos de Caldas, Minas Gerais and monazite concentrated from Nucleomon which has the feature of being complex, and which is a type of material frequently found in nuclear technology. The method of fusion is chosen to prepare the samples, in which they are fused in borax in its natural form thus, proposing analyses of those elements without any previous chemical treatment. In the analyses of uranium, the effect of absorption of iron existing in the distinctive line ULα (n=2) of second order is mathematically corrected, instead of baing eliminated by chemical separation. The determination of thorium is made through the method of double-dilution in which several reasons have shown the advantages of its employment. The precision in function the coefficient of variation in percentage and the accuracy of the method proposed are discussed

by Wong, C.M.; Cate, J.L.; Pickles, W.L.; California Univ., Livermore (USA). Lawrence Livermore Lab -- [en] A method has been developed for gravimetrically preparing uranium nitrate standards with an estimated mean error of 0.1% (1 sigma) and a maximum error of 0.2% (1 sigma) for the total uranium weight. Two source materials, depleted uranium dioxide powder and NBS Standard Reference Material 960 uranium metal, were used to prepare stock solutions. The NBS metal proved to be superior because of the small but inherent uncertainty in the stoichiometry of the uranium oxide. These solutions were used to prepare standards in a freeze-dried configuration suitable for x-ray fluorescence analysis. Both gravimetric and freeze-drying techniques are presented. Volumetric preparation was found to be unsatisfactory for 0.1% precision for the sample size of interest. One of the primary considerations in preparing uranium standards for x-ray fluorescence analysis is the development of a technique for dispensing a 50-μl aliquot of a standard solution with a precision of 0.1% and an accuracy of 0.1%. The method developed corrects for variation in aliquoting and for evaporation loss during weighing. Two sets, each containing 50 standards have been produced. One set has been retained by LLL and one set retained by the Savannah River project SubjectINORGANIC, ORGANIC, PHYSICAL AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (B1100) Source/ReportMar 1978; 9 p; American Nuclear Society topical meeting; Williamsburg, VA, USA; 15 - 17 May 1978; UCRL--80778; CONF-780522--6; Available from NTIS., PC A02/MF A01 Record TypeReport Country/Org.United States Ref. Samples are collected on the Whatman-41 Filter paper by pumping through it 10 to 400 m3 of air. Measurement equipment consists of Si/Li detector and multichannel analyzer. Excitation of characteristic K or L X-rays is performed with radioisotope sources 238Pu, 109Cd. Spectra of X-rays are given. Three elements Fe, Zn and Pb are determined in the concentration range of 0.01 to 18μg/m3. The second part of the paper presents XRF analysis of moss ash. Standardization and calibration problems are described and detectability curve for elements identified is given. The results are presented of the quantitative analysis of elements Ca, Ti, Fe, Zn, Pb, Sr, Zr. (author) Orig. Absorption corrections for x-ray fluorescence analysis of environmental samples 235 KB - http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/07/227/7227447.pdf - Text Version by Bazan, F.; Bonner, N.A.; California Univ., Livermore (USA). Lawrence Livermore Lab -- [en] The discovery of a very simple and useful relationship between the absorption coefficient of a particular element and the ratio of incoherent to coherent scattering by the sample containing the element is discussed. By measuring the absorption coefficients for a few elements in a few samples, absorption coefficients for many elements in an entire set of similar samples can be obtained. http://www.iaea.org/inis/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/08/312/8312121.pdf - Text Version by Ryon, R.W.; California Univ., Livermore (USA). Lawrence Livermore Lab -- [en] Polarized x-radiation is shown to be a superior and practical excitation source for measuring trace elements by energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence. In this study, polarization was obtained by scattering the primary beam at 900 from boron carbide. The losses inherent in the geometric requirements and the polarizer efficiency can be more than compensated for by using a close-coupled system and a standard, high-power x-ray tube. With the system described here, which uses a molybdenum anode x-ray tube, detection limits for the elements from K to Sr in NBS Standard Orchard Leaves are approximately 2 to 4.5 times lower using polarized excitation as compared to direct excitation, and about 1 to 3 times lower as compared to secondary excitation SubjectINORGANIC, ORGANIC, PHYSICAL AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (B1100) Source/Report9 Sep 1976; 17 p; 25. annual x-ray conference; Denver, Colorado, United States of America (USA); 3 Aug 1976; UCRL--78063(REV.1); CONF-760857--2; Available from NTIS. $3.50.
