Laura White Interview Laura White is a singer from Atherton in Bolton and is bestknown for reaching the final twelve of the fifth series of theXFactor in 2008. White’s debut single, ‘You should have known’charted at number 32 on the UK Charts and in 2012 she was thespecial guest of the Peter Andre tour.

What has been your best experience so far?Everything! The last three and a half years have been a whirlwind. I’d say thehighlight, was performing at the M.E.N Arena as it as always been my dream.

Who is your inspiration?I’ve got many inspirations, such as Stevie Wonder and my relative Michael becausehe’s always positive. I love to read novels and books and I’m inspired by people whoare mainly driven to what they love to do.

What happened to releasing ‘Radio’ as your second single? It was going to be a smash hit according to the critics, but it had the ironic rappingand it was a hard decision for me to make, but I thought it didn’t go with the style ofmy music and project.

How was the transition from being on National Television to coming back toBolton? My life changed the minute I entered for the show! After the show, I’m in Londonquite a lot. I try coming home as much as I can and I try forgetting about music whenI’m with my family. I love the roots, the people and everything here really.

How did it feel working with somebody as big as Cheryl Cole?At the time it was life changing as Cheryl had achieved so much and she understoodhow I felt with my music, she also understood how I didn’t want to rush throughreleasing songs with no meaning to them. It was just wonderful to have that supportfrom Cheryl.

Tell us a bit about your debut album! The album is a mix of cool pop songs, with ‘hooky’ melodies and it’s all based on mydiary entries and completely on everything that I’ve felt.

You’ve been writing songs for Rihanna, Eliza Doolittle, Cher Lloyd and LeonaLewis, do you ever prioritise who you’re writing for?I’ve been so passionate about my writing and my management team believed in meall the way but I have to maintain the balance of writing from my heart and writingfor other artists.

What is your most embarrassing moment?I always say this, I did a showcase when I was about 17 at the time and funnilyenough, I was singing ‘Falling’ by Alicia Keys, they didn’t tell me that there was onlya sheet at the back of the stage and because I was so involved in my singing that Ishut my eyes and I ended up falling backwards

What is your most memorablemoment?I’ve been so lucky and my most mem-orable moment was getting to the mo-ment where the public was going tohear about me.

Who would you want to be stuck ina lift with?I would have to say Drake! He’s thelove of my life, and I absolutely adorehis work and lyrics. If I was stuck in a liftwith Drake, maybe I could even blagdoing a song with him!

Moving onto what you think ofyoung people, what do you think ofthe youth of today?I think that we have such a strongcommunity spirit and I think the wayforward is just to keep kids focusednowadays. I think that you just have tobe really inspired and just believe inyourself.

Do you think it’s changed muchsince when you were young?I think that if you have someone closeto you like your family and you areloved then you will have a strong mindin life and you will believe in what youare doing. I think that connecting withyour parents and developing it fromthere is the most important thing.

Do you think enough is being doneto promote the positives of youngpeople?Well, all the kids that I’ve met havebeen polite and the main thing is tojust keep focused on your educationand just keep inspiring kids to theirbest ability.

We Are Young – Fun Feat. Janelle MonáeYou may not have heard of Janelle Monáe before or even the band ‘Fun’, they together, make thesong ‘We Are Young’. Janelle is normally stuck to R&B so it’s not clear what compelled JanelleMonáe to work with these New York-based ‘Panic! At The Disco’ soundalikes. They’re hardly natu-ral bedfellows, and her input is limited to a brief vocal. It’s a winning formula though – this stirringballad went to Number One in the US. It’s already being played on the radio right here in the UK.The collaboration seems to be this year’s Owl City!

Laser Lights – Jessie JJ-J-J-J-Jessie J is back with a brand new track! It’s called Laserlight, the beat is by David Guetta. The song does sound a lot like Guetta’s previous track, Titanium. Feeling this ‘larger-than-life, elec-tro-pop’ ballad, it certainly gets you awaiting the forthcoming Platinum edition of Jessie J’s 2011debut set. The song has a really catchy beat and Jessie sings her name Derulo style!

Olympic Song‘Spinnin For 2012’, is the official Olympic Torch Relay song and it will create the soundtrack to theOlympic Flame’s, 8,000 mile journey across the UK. The song has a brilliant ‘feel’ to it, its lyrics areinspirational to coincide with and bring alive the youthful focus of the Relay, and 8,000 inspiration-al torchbearers. The singers are Tinchy Stryder who is riding high in the charts! He is not only achart-topping artist but also a fashion entrepreneur and music industry mogul. Dionne Bromfieldis the icing to the cake though! Dionne debuted as a 13 year old and has become known for herunique music style! She has presented CBBC’s youth programme, ‘Friday Download’.

Paranormal Activity 4 is set to release in Octo-ber, as you would imagine. Every Halloween, anew Paranormal Activity film is released! Is thegist of the film too predictable? A family sets upcameras in a house, nothing happens for 45minutes; all of a sudden something makes anoise, then nothing happens for another 45minutes before finally something falls over.Surely we are tired of this now? If the next filmfollows the same storyline, the audience willsurely only be there to see who falls over in thelast ten minutes of the film before leaving!

Cyber bullying costs the United Kingdom£18 Million every year!

Over 350,000 children are victims of cyber bullying eve-ry year, costing the government an average of £18 mil-lion. The huge investment comes from a small section ofthe £67.8 billion education budget each year. But whyshould our government need to spend money on these di-lemmas? Surely there are a variety of other options to stopcyber bullying without spending valuable tax payers money.Well in fact, the government, councils and communitieshave tried almost everything to bring this monstrosity to anend, but no hope has been shown. A huge factor in the pre-vention of cyber bullying is the awareness shown by people, especially parents and close friends. A large number of peo-ple in the United Kingdom are unaware that cyber bullyingtakes place on a daily basis and don’t know the causes oreffects of cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is described as ‘per-sistent and intentional’.

How do the bully victims feel?A large percentage of children are not majorly affected bycyber bullies, but the individuals who are, are scared sense-less. 20% of victims are reluctant to attend school becausethey are scared, 14% fear for their own safety, 5% self-harmand 3% of cyber bullying victims attempt suicide.

Are you a cyber-bully?You might be a cyber-bully and not be aware of it. Ideascome across differently online than they would in person, ifyou persistently abuse someone as a ’joke’ on a social net-work, they could take it the wrong way and they could endup as one of the 3% of cyber bully victims who attempt sui-cide. Think before you act!

Are you a victim? If you are a victim to this type of bullying or any other typesof bullying, there is always help at hand. Don’t suffer in si-lence, speak out and tell someone. You do not have to putup with it!

Moving on to young people, what doyou think of the youth today?I suppose some people are good withintheir environments, but some just thinkthat it’s okay to trash things; that’s notgood in my opinion I try to help peopleto not do that.

How does it feel to be branded in thesame category as the youths who areout on the streets on a Friday night?I don’t know, they’re the same age as meand it’s not as if I can change that. It’sbeen going on for ages, people in theirthirties where doing it when they werefifteen. I'm not drinking on the streets, then I can’t really say much.

Healthy Active Lifestyle What nutrients do I need for a healthy, balanced diet?Nutrients are divided into two groups; macro-nutrients and

micro-nutrients.Macro-nutrients form the biggest part of what we eat, these

include;Carbohydrates - these provide most of the energy we use

Fats - these provide energy and insulation for our bodyProteins - these are used for muscle growth and repair

Micro-nutrients are needed in much smaller quantities, theseinclude;

Vitamins - these help our vision, skin, bones, teeth, amongst other things

Minerals - these include calcium which helps keep bonesdense and strong

Water - water holds oxygen and keeps the body hydrated

How can I start living a healthy, active lifestyle? A series of tasks carefully combined can help you achieve a healthy, active lifestyle. A balanced diet, regular exercise, work and rest, all help you to feel good and maintain your well being. If you do not

have the right amount of nutrients in your diet or if you over train when exercising, you could cause

injury and it could lead to you damaging your muscles. It is essential that you get the correct

amount of nutrients in your diet for muscle growth and repair. When exercising, the best option would

be to create a personal exercise programme. This would help to support your individual needs and assist you in your health and fitness progression.

How does regular exercise make you feel better? Serotonin is the ‘feel good’ hormone found in the

human body. When exercising on a regular basis, the hormone levels of serotonin are increased, which

allows the mind to feel happy and fresh. Regular ex-ercise also helps you feel good about your body.

Moody, impulsive and troublesome, sound familiar? As teen-agers we get burdened with stereotypes and descriptionsthat don't actually describe us at all. We get questioned onour actions and judged by many people!

Teenage Brain

For many years, people believed that a teenagers brain was at full capacity and workedlike an adult brain but this is untrue. New research by scientists all over the world hasshown that in fact, a teenagers brain undergoes a massive reorganisation between theages of 12 and 25. Our brain gradually becomes more efficient, starting with the rear ofthe brain which controls basicfunctions like vision andmovement and thefront of the brain, which controlscomplicatedthings likethinking.

Connectionsbetweenour memorydirectory andour frontal areasalso mean we get betterat making goals and resolvingproblems. This is the transitionfrom childhood to adulthood and makes us moredecisive and mature.

Because our brain is constantly changing, certain parts of ourbehaviour becomes more extreme than a child's or adult’s, for example, given a choice, teenager would take more of a risk than an adult or a child. This isn't because we don'tunderstand the consequences or aren't in control, we are, we just value the reward morethan an adult or a child would. This helps us to evolve to fit the needs of the world todayand helps us to get the most out of life!

The traits that many people characterise us on are in fact what define us. We aren'tirrational or idiotic and we do understand consequences. We are in fact highly intelligentand use less of our brain to make decisions than adults do.

So next time somebody calls you for your teenage troublesome traits, they only notice itbecause it’s only what annoys them or worries them. We aren't all bad!

Chelsea Spokes is currently the presenter of Key103’s break-fast show along with Mike Toolan and Matt Haslam. Chelseaalso is the face of the Trafford Centre, presenting for the BigScreen each month and hosting their exclusive fashion showson a regular basis.

When you were younger, what job did you want to have and why?I always wanted to be a journalist and I always had a pen in my hand, either writingpoems or stories. I’m not sure why, I just loved anything to do with creative writing andEnglish. It also helped that I had a really inspirational English teacher who encouragedme.

How did you get into the radio industry?I did a degree in BA Hons Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston. At the time there were not many Universities offering this course and they were knownto be the best. After 3 years and some work experience I got a job presenting weekendbreakfast on Century FM and after that, I was offered the job of presenting theBreakfast show with Mike Toolan on Key103 and that was 6 years ago.

Why did radio appeal to you?The immediacy of radio is really exciting. For example, if you have some breaking newsit can take ages to get it into print in a newspaper and for TV – on radio you pull a faderup and it’s on, that’s what’s great. Also painting pictures with words, it’s a tough thingto do but worth it.

What is your advice to budding broadcasters? It’s so hard give advice on this and it’s something I’m asked all the time. The industryhas changed so much in the years since I started. In recent years it’s shrinking. Galaxy, for example, have become Capital with nearly all of their line up networked fromLondon. This means instead of a presenter in every station the company owns, there is1 sat in London going out across to all the stations they own, saving the companymoney and losing locality.

There’s no hard or fast way to get ‘into radio.’ In this world of super injunctions, I don’tthink it hurts to have a bit of legal training. Degrees provide this and they give yousomething to fall back on, an actual qualification, so I’m in support of them. However,I think it’s important to learn things from you won’t learn in a classroom or text book.Work experience will do this and you’ve got to do everything you can to get in there, learn skills and meet people who might be able to help you in the future. It’s half whatyou know and half who you know.

How does it feel to be a part of Manchester's Number 1 Hit Music Station? It’s fantastic and we feel lucky every day. Key103 is a historic station with so muchheritage in Manchester. It’s a privilege to follow in the footsteps of many famousnames and to hopefully inspire up and coming young radio presenters to follow in ours.
