PREFACETHIS album is part of a collection of photo-graphs of the various battlefields in Europeupon which the Armed Forces of the UnitedStates were actively engaged during WorldWar I.

These terrain photographs were taken andprepared by the American Battle MonumentsCommission, as provided in the act of Congressof March 4, 1923, to complete the historicalrecord of the operations of the American units.The series comprises 69 albums containing1,396 photographs.The contents of these albums will be of par-

ticular value when studied in conjunction withthe Summaries of Operations, prepared bythe American Battle Monuments Commission,which relate in detail the combat services ofeach American division.

On the page preceding the photographs willbe found a small-scale key map showing thegeneral operation of which this divisional opera-tion was a part. In the pocket' inside the backcover will be found a reprint of a 1: 20,000 map,of the type used during the war, showing theoperation covered by the photographs in this

album. On this index map have been indicatedthe position of the camera and the direction inwhich it was sighted in taking each photograph.

On the page opposite each photograph is asection of the 1: 20,000 map of the terrain in thevicinity of that pertaining to the photograph.The white wedge-shaped portion of the mapindicates the sector of terrain which actuallyappears in the picture. The plotted positionof the camera and the axis of the picture areshown in blue, the length of the blue line approxi-mately indicating the depth of the view. Thecircled number corresponds to the number ofthe photograph, of which the numerals beforethe dash indicate the division and the numeralsafter the dash indicate the serial number ofthe photograph in this division.

Various topographical features visible in thephotographs have been indicated by name tofacilitate orientation.

Complete sets of these albums have beendeposited with the National Archives, theLibrary of Congress, the Historical Divisionof the War Department General Staff, and theCommand and Staff College.AMERICAN BATTLE MONUMENTS COMMISSION,
