Three-Time Peach Belt Conference Tournament Champion (1991, 1992, 1996) 6

The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 96 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 96 to 39 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 00 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 975 and additional land was donated increasing the campus to 44 acres. In October 977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 978 and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added.

An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in fall of 984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached ,066 in the fall of 975, the Aiken Campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses, as well as create a

number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 977 and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,300 students, over 00 full-time faculty, approximately 0 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, an associate degree in nursing, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Set to open in early 2007, the 4,000-seat Convocation Center will not only become the centerpiece of the USC Aiken Athletic Department,

but will also serve as a center for com-munity functions. With a groundbreaking ceremony on December 9, 2005, construction in

earnest began with a 14-month time table laid out for the project’s comple-tion. With China Construction as the builders of the project, Chinese National Television was on hand for the historic groundbreaking. Funding for the 17 million dollar, 100,000 square foot facility came from both public and private sources. The building will house the entire USCA Athletic Department, have one main competition floor as well as two additional practice floors, multiple locker rooms, a weight room, meeting spaces, student-athlete study center, and other amenities. Graduation in May 2007 is sched-uled to be the first official University event in the Convocation Center. Following a busy summer, the first athletic events will be held beginning in fall 2007.

Will Condon enters his seventh season as head coach of the USC Aiken volleyball program. With a 07-88 mark in his six seasons, Condon reached two milestones in 2005. On September 30, in a key con-ference match against rival Augusta State at “The Courthouse”, the Lady Pacers blanked the Lady Jags 3-0 to give Condon his 98th win at USC Aiken, passing C.J. Sherman on the all-time wins list. Just 0 days later, in a 3- win at UNC Pembroke on October 8, Condon won his 00th game at USC Aiken, a first in the 28-year history of the vol-leyball program. Taking over a team that was -8 after the 999 season and struggled to a sixth place Peach Belt Conference finish (3-11), Condon’s Lady Pacers posted a 9-5 conference mark in 2000, good for a tie for third place. USC Aiken entered the 2000 PBC Volleyball Tournament seeded third. The Lady Pacers, three-time tourna-ment champions (99, 992, 996), defeated Francis Marion in the open-ing round before falling to #24 Arm-strong Atlantic State, the second seed, in the semifinals. In 200, USCA again was in the upper half of the conference standings with a 9-2 overall record (7-7 PBC), placing the team fourth. Condon’s 2002 squad battled through injuries and growing pains as the young team matured to a 4-8 record and a 6-8 mark in PBC play. USCA hosted the 2002 PBC Tourna-ment, but the fourth-seeded Pacers suffered a tough 3-2 opening round loss to UNC Pembroke. After a 3-2 mark in 2003, the Lady Pacers posted one of the biggest turnarounds in conference history with a 2-3 record in 2004. Finishing 8-6 in the PBC, USCA was fourth in the standings, one game back of third. Last year, despite a 6-4 record, Condon’s club broke through with a big win over the University of Puerto

Rico-Rio Piedras, a road win at Rol-lins, knocking off NCAA Tournament participant Francis Marion, and nearly upsetting regular season PBC cham-pions Armstrong Atlantic State. Prior to coming to USCA, Con-don served as an assistant coach for four seasons at Emporia State. At the Division II school in Kan-sas, the teams Condon worked with all finished with regional rankings. He specialized in team offense and designed a system that brought his team to a 10th place finish for hitting percentage in 996, 2th in 997, and second in 998. Condon is a 996 graduate of Clemson University where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Management while playing setter, outside hitter, and right side for the Tigers’ Men’s Club team. In 999, he completed his Master’s of Business Administration at Emporia State. An active member of the Ameri-can Volleyball Coaches Association, Condon is a fifth-year voter on the AVCA Division II Top 25 panel. Condon, 32, is married to Lesley Michelle and the couple resides in Aiken, S.C.

Will Condon hopes that last season’s growing pains will result in this year’s success. Entering his seventh season as head of the USC Aiken volleyball program, Condon welcomes back 3 letterwinners including five of six starters from last year’s 16-14 team that finished fourth in the PBC at 7-5. With the departure of eight-time Peach Belt Conference regular season champion North Florida prior to the 2005 season, some had hoped for the Lady Pacers to climb the ranks of the PBC and challenge Armstrong Atlantic State for a conference crown. But Condon knew that USCA would have to earn that status, and with a solid group of sophomores, opted for the road less traveled, ditching cupcake wins in favor of battle-testing his team against the region’s elite. “Our schedule was demanding for a reason,” said Condon. “You can’t simulate in practice a team as talented as Tampa or Florida Southern. Last year was intended to be a learning experience and it was

intended to be a very tough schedule.” Now with the core unit as juniors, USCA hopes to use last year’s lessons to translate into wins. Having been picked third, just four points behind USC Upstate and eight back of Armstrong Atlantic State, the other coaches around the league see the potential in this year’s USCA squad. The Lady Pacers received two of a possible six first place votes, second only to AASU’s four. “Two teams you point to are Armstrong Atlantic and USC Upstate,” said Condon. “More so than any other year, I think we don’t really know how the season will play out. We expect to be competitive with the top teams in the league, but the question for us will be can we be consistent.” To live up to their goals, however, the team will have to do it with a new floor general. All-Conference setter Rachel Dalitz is now gone, creating a void that she filled for four years. Dalitz’ 4,572 career assists rank second all-time on the school’s list and seventh in conference history. “Our biggest problem is the loss of comfort. It takes a while to develop that comfort level, that level of trust you need with your setter,” said Condon. “For many of our players, Rachel is the only setter they’ve known in their college careers.” Senior Cheryl Barcas, however, has been Dalitz’ understudy for three years and will likely seize her op-portunity to move into the spotlight. Incoming freshman Whitney Tabbert is expected to be the Lady Pacers’ setter of the future. The other newcomer for USC Aiken is outside hitter Ali Sfara, making up the small recruiting class for Condon. “What the class says is just how many people we have returning. We only needed two people but we have a great number of people coming back,” said Condon. “We were able to address our needs at setter and add depth to the outside hitter position

with the addition of Whitney and Ali.” The double-headed middle attack of Mandy Gerolstein and Laura Williams will likely power the Lady Pacers in 2006, as it did last year. Gerolstein earned All-Conference honors after racking up 400 kills, 2 blocks, 39 service aces, and led the league in hitting percentage at .308. Williams was also among the confer-ence leaders in hitting percentage, placing eighth at .256 and averaging .0 blocks per game.

SETTERS Barcas will get her chance to run the show after three years of watching and waiting. She ranks

fifth all-time at USCA with 712 career assists, but should look to more than double that total in her senior season. Tabbert will start the season in a back-up role and is someone that Condon locked onto in the recruiting process as the person he wanted to run the offense for years to come. “It’s a natural transition to go with Cheryl,” said Condon. “Our team has been working with her in practice for a long time now. Whitney has the talent and personality you look for in a setter, but it takes some time to adjust to the speed of the game at this level.”

MIDDLE HITTERS Gerolstein and Williams may constitute the best middle hitting line-up in the Peach Belt Conference. Williams, a senior, has started for the past three years while Gerolstein, just a junior, has been in the starting line-up since day one. Junior Jasmine Edney continues in her development while sophomore Shanon Sumter gives Condon a pair of athletic back-ups that will add depth to the position. “The obvious heart of our offense

is Mandy and Laura. We’ve worked on expanding their games and both have improved their blocking,” said Condon. “One of the reasons they’ve improved is we have two other middle hitters that are so physically gifted that can challenge them in practice.” “Jasmine has made tremendous strides this spring and fall and if she gains a little more consistency, could become one of the top five middles in our conference,” said Condon. “There is no one in our region that can do what Shanon does. She is a top-tier Division I caliber athlete.”

OUTSIDE HITTERS/RIGHT SIDE Injury and inexperience depleted some of the team’s depth at outside hitter last year. Veronica Seidle, Amanda Timm, Stefanie Durham, Katie Baker, and Christina Greene all saw time at the position. Seidle, named the team’s Most Valuable Player as a freshman in 2004, suffered an ACL tear and missed the final 18 games. Timm, a converted setter, joined Durham, Baker, and Greene--all newcomers--in logging time at outside hitter. Baker is redshirting in 2006 but everyone else has more experience and should look to be more of a factor. “Outside hitter was one of our major weaknesses last year. The lack of consistency hurt us during the season. When they played well, we won. When they did not, we struggled,” said Condon. “With four people, we have four different types of players. Veronica is a ball-control player, Amanda is aggressive, Stefanie is explosive, and Christina adds the aspect of being left-handed in her attack.” Missy Deardorff will begin her third season as a starter at the crucial right side position for the Lady Pacers. She was third on the team with 296 kills and a .85 hitting percentage last year. Add that to 28 digs, 96 blocks, and 35 assists and it becomes clear how this is an all-around position for USCA. “This is an important position in our offense and is designed to take full advantage of the attention our middles get,” said Condon. “Missy is going to be crucial to our success. If we can keep her attacking at a high percent-

age, she could be an All-Conference player.”

LIBERO For the first time in a few seasons, the Lady Pacers can enjoy some stability at the libero position. Senior Hayden Johnson and sopho-more Danielle Spice are both back. Johnson had a good first year in the cardinal and white with 42 digs for a 3.96 per game average, the fourth best single season in school history. Spice added 30 digs in 43 games played for a 3.02 per game average. “Both Hayden and Danielle have worked very hard to improve over where they were this time last year. It took Hayden a while to adjust to a new system and defensive philoso-phy, but her personality as a player is one that always makes you want her on your team,” said Condon. “Danielle is also very highly skilled and is one of the best serve receivers we have ever had.”

THE SCHEDULE USC Aiken will play seven matches against six teams that participated in last year’s NCAA Tournament. With only 0 home contests, USCA will be road warriors.

USC Aiken opened the 2005 sea-son with guarded optimism. With the departure of eight-time Peach Belt Conference regular season champion North Florida to the ranks of Division I, the remaining seven teams in the league felt as if the uphill battle got a little flatter. The Lady Pacers were picked third, trailing perennial runners-up Armstrong Atlantic State and Francis Marion. Head coach Will Condon, howev-er, knew he had assembled a sched-ule to challenge his young squad, maybe to the point to where it would take more than one year to reap its benefits. After all, USC Aiken would play 3 of its 30 matches against teams that participated in the 2004 NCAA Division II Tournament. With a senior setter in Rachel Dalitz and a young group of freshmen and sophomores as the supporting cast, the Lady Pacers opened the 2005 campaign with a hard fought 3-2 loss to California (Pa.) in the Jo-seph B. DuRant Invitational hosted by Francis Marion.

Continuing their neutral court opening, the Lady Pacers turned in a 2- performance at the Lenoir-Rhyne/Moretz Sports Invitational in Hickory, N.C. over Labor Day weekend. To conclude the front-loaded tournament-flurry, USC Aiken faced a tough task at the AASU/Chatham Orthopaedics Classic in Savannah, Ga. on September 9-0. After opening with a five-set win over Catawba, the Lady Pacers suffered a 3-0 setback to #4 Florida Southern. Bouncing back to defeat Florida Tech 3-, USCA closed out the classic with an epic battle against Eckerd, falling 6-4 in game five. Three weeks into the season, the Lady Pacers finally performed for the home crowd, hosting the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras on back-to-back nights, September 3-4. The occasion marked the program’s first ever match against a team outside of the United States. A 3- defeat on night one turned into an impressive 3-2 win the second go around as USCA took game five 5-3.

Sitting at 5-7, USC Aiken opened conference competition on Septem-ber 23 by hosting Lander. A 3- win over the Bearcats started an alternat-ing pattern of wins and losses as the Lady Pacers would find themselves at 8-9 overall and 3-2 in PBC play following an October 4 upset win at Francis Marion. That victory triggered a string of six consecutive wins, the team’s longest of the season, as a 3-2 win at Lander capped the run and had the Lady Pacers at 3-9 (5-2 PBC). A five-game loss at USC Upstate, 15-13 in the fifth game, was followed up quickly with a 3-0 win at Augusta State on October 26. The Lady Pac-ers dropped three of four to close the regular season. Placing fourth in the PBC year end standings, the Lady Pacers took on fifth place UNC Pembroke in the opening round of the 2005 PBC Tour-nament in Augusta, Ga. Despite a stumble in game two, USCA cruised to the 3- win. In the semifinals, the Lady Pacers faced top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State. Playing their second match of the day, USCA could not hold up against the Lady Pirate attack, falling in three. The loss ended USC Aiken’s sea-son at 6-4 overall (7-5 in the Peach Belt Conference).

Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the Na-tional Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the charac-teristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the in-clusion of students of all demograph-ic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a commu-nality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.

History: Since its inception in 99, the Peach Belt Conference has worked tirelessly to become one of the elite conferences in NCAA Division II. Now in its 6th season with 24 national championships and 21 national final-ists, the PBC has accomplished that goal. Starting with only two champion-ships in 99, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 2 championship sports with the addition of women’s soccer in the fall of 2000. The conference traces its roots back to November of 988 when schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Follow-ing a second meeting on Dec. 3, 989 hosted by USC Aiken, five of those schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and began play in 99. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cou-

gars own. The PBC has seen continued suc-cess in all sports with national rank-ings and multiple NCAA appearances. The 2004-05 season may have been the most successful with two national titles as USC Aiken won the second of their three-straight golf championships and Armstrong Atlantic State won the women’s tennis national championship. The PBC also had the second place or runner-up in baseball, softball, men’s tennis and golf, giv-ing the PBC a first or second-place in every spring sport the conference sponsors. The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlan-tic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken, and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May 2000. Augusta State joined the confer-ence in 99 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July , 992. They were followed by Ken-nesaw State on July , 994, Clayton State on July , 995 and the Univer-sity of North Florida on July , 997. Kennesaw State and North Florida de-parted for the Division I ranks in 2005 and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University as its th member in the fall of 2005. Bringing the total back to 2, Georgia Southwestern State University joined in the summer of 2006. Former Augusta State basketball coach and athletic director Marvin Vanover was named the interim com-missioner in April 990, and later ap-pointed as the conference’s first com-missioner in July 99. He established the conference office in Augusta, Ga. The conference currently holds championships in 2 sports, six for men and six for women. They are
