A recent ManpowerGroup study ranked truck drivers as the #2 job that employers are having a difficult time filling. The American Trucking

Association’s 2014 Driver Compensation Study revealed median annual pay for drivers ranges from $46,000-$73,000. To meet the needs of local, regional and national transportation employ-ers, Craven Community College Workforce Development division recently launched a new Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training program for both Class “A” and Class “B” driver’s licenses. A Class “A” license will allow drivers to operate a tractor-trailer truck, and a Class “B” license will allow drivers to operate a straight truck (ex: delivery truck). Students will be trained and prepared for the North Carolina State Com-mercial Truck Driving License examination for new drivers. All training will take place at school facilities in school-provided equipment. For qualified stu-dents, financial assistance is available through sources such as student loans and the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program. The college also provides job placement support. The college has already been approved by several national trucking companies to accept student ap-plications. Some transportation companies offer signing bonuses or tuition reimbursement. For upcoming orientation and the training schedule, see page 5.

“I was laid off from my job of 14 years. Going back to school was something

I wanted to do for a long time. My very first class at Craven was in the Human

Resource Development (HRD) Program. The class taught me how to write a résumé and how to conduct a

successful interview. Overall, the program equipped me with the

knowledge I needed for the upcoming job market.”
