Woodfield Bivouac
On the weekend of July 6th – 8th, the Woodfield
Composite Squadron hosted a bivouac at Rock Cut state
park in northern Illinois. The purpose of this activity
was to train cadets in basic emergency services tasks.
The bivouac was also part of an overall funded Air
Force‐assigned mission with a United States Air Force‐
assigned mission number.
With seven cadets present from Woodfield Composite
Squadron, the tasks completed were a compass course,
building a shelter, map work, using Lpers to locate ELT
beacons, and aircraft signal coordination.
Senior members in attendance for training the cadets
were, 1Lt. Saltares ESO from the Woodfield Squadron,
Maj. Picek the IL Group 14 Commander and Maj.
Kalemis from Great Lakes Region.

New CAP Glider at Sky Soaring
Continued from page 1
The Blanik glider being received has been used by the
Air Force Academy for the past several years and will be
in addition to the Schweizer 2‐33 currently being used.
Considered one of the world’s most common basic
training sailplanes the L‐23 is an all‐metal, two‐seat,
dual control, high‐winged glider with retractable main
wheel and a fixed tail wheel. Its one‐piece canopy
design allows for excellent visibility. Radios and flight
instruments are available in both cockpits.
Civil Air Patrol uses gliders to introduce youth to flight
through its cadet orientation program. The opportunity
to fly is a major attraction for cadets, of whom in the
area of 26,000 received orientation flights in the
organization’s powered aircraft and gliders last year.
Three glider academies are offered by Civil Air Patrol
each summer at different locations in the U.S. These
academies are specifically designed for cadets who
want to learn to fly. Participants receive formal ground
instruction and cockpit time with a certified flight
instructor. Some cadets get the opportunity to solo.
Sky Soaring is located just off of I‐90. For more
information, and to learn when Sky Soaring will be
flying next, contact Maj. Snyder or visit Sky Soaring’s
web site: http://skysoaring.com.
CAP Glider Flights
Continued from page 1
For years the Woodfield Composite Squadron has had a
dynamic glider program and this year is no different.
With three orientation glider pilots Maj. Steven Snyder,
Capt. John Baker and SM Mike Vaughn, the latter two
which are also instructors, the squadron provides flights
for multiple squadrons in Illinois and is active at
Johnson Flight Academy each year.
While cadets receive five glider flights for free in Civil
Air Patrol, an arrangement with Sky Soaring in
Hampshire, IL allows CAP members, senior and cadet,
to fly for $35 per pull with no club membership fee.
This benefit affords CAP members one of the most
economical ways to experience fly anywhere.
Recent Cadet Promotion
On July 18th Cadet Commander Walid Basraoui was
promoted to C/LtCol. by Maj. Snyder the Deputy
Commander for Cadets.
As a recent recipient of the Eaker Award, cadet
Basraoui has become the 3rd cadet in the past 8 years to
earn the rank of C/LtCol. at Woodfield Composite
Squadron. During his time with the squadron he has
served as the 2012 Cadet Deputy Commander at the
Illinois Wing Summer Encampment, Chairperson for the
Illinois Wing Cadet Advisory Council, and the Woodfield
Composite Squadron Cadet Commander.
Cadet Basraoui is currently an AFROTC cadet and has
set his sights on the next and most prominent award for
a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol, the Spaatz award. Since
2004 only 2 cadets have earned the Spaatz award at
Woodfield Composite Squadron and since 1964 only
1,837 have earned the award in all of CAP.
As Cadet Basraoui’s Cadet Commander role comes to an
end in August, he is stepping into an exciting new role,
representing Great Lakes Region at the National Cadet
Advisory Counsel.
Open Squadron Position ‐ AEO
Woodfield Composite Squadron has an open officer
position, Aerospace Education Officer (AEO). This
position is open to existing CAP members as well as
new members interested in volunteering their time to
further Aerospace Education. Civil Air Patrol has
extensive training materials and opportunities available
to ensure the success of anyone filling this position.
The Aerospace Education (AE) specialty track is
dedicated to preparing CAP members for the
responsibilities of becoming CAP Aerospace Education
Officers (AEO) at all levels of the organization, including
squadrons, groups, wings, and regions. The specialty
guide for this position provides aerospace education
information and training that will enhance the

Civil Air Patrol is arguably best known for its Search and
Rescue (SAR) activities.
CAP now flies about 95 percent of inland SAR missions
directed by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center
(AFRCC) at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia.
Outside of the continental United States, CAP directly
supports the Joint Rescue Coordination Centers in
Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Civil Air Patrol is credited with saving 54 lives in 2011.
See our ES video at http://www.woodfieldcap.org/ES.shtml.

Become a Sponsor SUPPORT CIVIL AIR PATROL
The Civil Air Patrol has three primary missions;
Aerospace Education, Emergency Services and Cadet
Programs. To accomplish these missions funds are
needed for: cadet orientation flights, cadet
scholarships, emergency services equipment and
related mission training expenses. Through this

best trained Search and Rescue, First Responders and
community leaders in the country.
The Woodfield Composite Squadron is fortunate to
have several corporate sponsors which provide direct

Open Squadron Position ‐ AEO
Continued from page 2
The position description for those just starting in the
role is to implement aerospace education programs for
cadets and senior members at the squadron level and
promote aerospace education in school systems. In a
leadership position the AEO is a mentor of aerospace
education for the squadron, and an outreach facilitator
for aerospace education in the community.
For those interested in promoting aerospace education
but not wanting a leadership role, another way to
participate is from a team player perspective or
assistant. When aerospace education is being planned
or is taking place, team players fill the support role in
the unit and the community. Regardless of how one
views aerospace education, there’s a way for all senior
members to participate.
Current CAP members interested in filling this position

Gallman at [email protected].

Patrol, contact the Recruiting and Retention Officer
Capt. Craig Knickerbocker at [email protected].
