Vectors A Weekly Newsletter of the Lubbock Civil Air Patrol Squadron SWR-TX-293

    Edition #17 April 24, 2011

From the CommanderLt Burrells briefing depicting the various roles CAPs could be requested toperform during the wildfires was quite timely. The Texas Forest Servicerequested CAP provide an aerial communications platform (otherwise known asa highbird*) at a major fire between here and Ft Worth. Texas Wing requestedaircrews to be available through next weekend.

Other major news to report is that Congress not only fully funded CAPs budget, but increased it by $4.2 million for FY 2011. This means more funds for trainingand cadet orientation flights. It appears that we may have a DSAREX scheduled

    monthly through August.

Next Saturday, 30 April is first aid/CPR training at the squadron headquarters. LtBurrell is the instructor and point of contact (POC). There is no cost for membersto take this training. First aid training is a requirement to earn your ground teammember qualification.

The next squadron activity is the trip to Sweetwater on 28 May to tour the WASPmuseum and attend the airshow. Some of the surviving WASPs will be inattendance at this event. For more information visit http://waspmuseum.org/

The Slaton Air Show is 4 June. Squadron members will bivouac at the Slatonairport the evening of 3 June and receive ground team and UDF training.Members will support crowd control activities during the airshow on the 4 th. Wewill also have an informational table and a Wreaths Across America exhibit at theshow. For information on the airshow visit http://www.thetexasairmuseum.org/Cadets: Remember to bring your aerospace current event to each meeting.Have a safe week!

A highbird relays radio messages over great distances because ofits altitude. VHF radio is line-of-sight which means the curvature ofthe earth can block radio communications between two or morestations. Often a repeater makes the process automatic.
