    MAPLE DAYS- Sugaring season is in full swing in Thurman, alittle town with a big maple industry. In a region where histori-cally more families than not tapped sugar maples to make syrupfor pancakes and sugar for baking, late winter is a time of inten-sive labor. Maple producers trek into the sugarbushes, often onsnowshoes, to drill holes, set taps and run or repair lines to carrysap to the sugarhouses for boiling and processing into a multi tudeof sweet treats. Beginning March 9 and 10 and continuing Satur-days and Sundays through March 24, four Thurman maple pro-ducers will open the doors of their sugarhouses to show how thisage-old tradition is practiced with the help of technological ad-vancements. Each weekend offers tours of four maple opera tions Adirondack Gold Maple, Valley Road, Hidden Hollow and ToadHill maple farms, all offering tours of sugarbushes and sugarhouses,with demonstrations and talks about tapping, evaporating, filter-ing and candy-making, with tasting and shopping. Expect some

    wonderful samples and great shopping for an expanded inventoryof maple treats. Also hosting wil l be Martins Lumber & CertifiedTree Farmfeaturing handsome maple slabs and Lucyanns craftspecialties, all with demonstrations.     Matteo Bovo, violin, in their first American concert tour. Maddalena and Matteo are

    graduates of the E.F. Dall Abaco Conservatory in

    Verona, Italy. Maddalena has won first prize in ten piano

    competitions throughout Italy, most notably Muzio

    Clementi in Firenze, where she won a special prize for

    the best performance of a piece by Muzio Clementi,

    andNuovi orizzonti, in Arezzo, where she was awarded

    a prize for the best performance of

    a romantic piece. She has been

    invited to perform in Verona, Venezia, Milan, Bologna, Stresa,

    Mantova and Isola dElba. She has performed with the Orchestra of

    the Arena in Verona, Orchestra Monteverdi in Bozen, and the Haydn

    Orchestra of Trento. Matteo won first prize at the Citta di Giussano

    competition, playing Bruchs Violin Concerto, and first prize at the

    Citta di Montichiari and Citta di Maccagno competitions

    playing Cesar Francks Violin Sonata. In 2012 he was a prize winner

    at the Premio Crescendo competition in Florence, playing the

    Beethoven Violin Concerto. He often performs with Maddalena,

    and together they won a prize at the Premio Pugnani Chamber Music Competition in

    Turin. Matteo plays a violin made by the noted Italian Luthier, Giovanni Lazzaro. Last

    year, Douglas and Linda Bischoff heard Maddalena in a recital in Verona, and were so

    impressed that they invited her to perform here in New York with Matteo. Maddalenas

    concert repertoire includes music of Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt, and

    repertoire of the duo will include Mozart, Schumann and Kreisler. We are thrilled to

    welcome these talented Italian musicians to the greater Saratoga area. To enjoy absolutely

    BEARD CONTEST- Participants in the 2013 Adirondack Donegal Beard Contest are shaving theirfacial hair in preparation for growing their Donegal Beards for this years contest to grow the best Irishbeard. New beardsman are welcome to take part in the event, which will be held in North Creek on St.Patricks Day and is free and open to the public. The Donegal Beard (also called a Chin-curtain orLincoln) is a beard that grows along the jaw line and covers the chin no soul patch, no mustache.Contestants must be clean shaven on or after January 1st.     CCC RECEIVES LARAC FUNDING The Salem Courthouse Community Center is pleasedo announce it has received LARAC funding in support of two worthy initiatives. The 2013rant will enable the CCC to once again offer its Music in the Courtroom chamber music seriesnder the direction of accomplished pianist, conductor and educator, Daniel Shulman.
