YOGA- Rensselaer Countys Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Road,

Grafton, NY . Yoga is a stress reliever. It improves balance, flexibility and strength.

When combined with light weights, where appropriate, it can be even more beneficial.

Its free, its fun and there is no obligation. Wear loose clothing and lets stretch and

relax! Classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00 am, you may join at any

time. Its a mind and body rejuvenation. Yoga is something people of all ages and

abilities can come together and do. If you have any questions, or would like to join

    LIVING HISTORY-

Are your kids interested in history? Do they like to learn about people and events of

the past? Do they like to pretend to be those people or live in that time period? Then

the multi-county 4-H Living History program might be for your kids. This is an

excellent program for home school youth or public schooled children, who are ages

seven and older, to explore their heritage, community, and expand their knowledge

of local history. The program is a four part series where youth will 1) explore living

history, 2) choose a person or time period they are interested in, 3) research and

learn about that person or era, and 4) participate in a Living History Fair where

youth will share what they have learned with others.

Cornell Cooperative Extensions 4-H Youth Development program will be facilitating

this 4 part series starting on Tuesday, January 8, at 6:30pm at the Hudson FallsPublic Library (tentative). The second session will be held Tuesday, January 22,

6:30pm at the Hudson Falls Public Library. The Third & Fourth Session will be

    determined at a later date.

Please contact John Bowe, 4-H Team Leader for more information 518-623-3291

    or 668-4881.

FIRST NIGHT SARATOGA!Come ring in 2013 at the New York State Military Museum!

Well have two great musical groups here to celebrate the

    evening.

Al and Kathy Bain are well-known country entertainers

with years of experience in live radio, TV, stage shows, and

dances. Their specialty is entertaining their audience. Al and

Kathy trade off vocals and harmony, with Kathy on upright

bass and Al on Travis-style guitar and 5-string banjo. They

will perform at 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm.

Jeff Brisbin is a songwriters songwriter. His music will resonate within you. They always

tell a story; sometimes you might wonder if hes telling your story. When he covers a song,

he makes it his own, and when he plays you one of his originals, hell touch your heart. He will

10 CATCHPHRASES WE DONT WANT TO HEAR AGAIN IN 2013 Hollywood.com reportedon the 10 catchphrases we dont want to hear again in 2013, including Guy Fieris Flavortown,USA!, May the odds be ever in your favor! from the Hunger Games, Game of Thrones Winter

s coming!, and YOLO! (you only live once). At Toastmasters, we have a role called the AhCounter. Their responsibility during a meeting is to listen for catchphrases we call verbal stuttersor crutch words. People use these when theyre nervous or have lost their train of thought,HollyAnn Carbino, VP of Education stated. Listening for ahs, ums, sos, you knows, andother crutch words makes the speakers aware of how often they use them as well as teaching the AhCounter to hear their own in everyday speech. If youd like to get rid of your personal speakinghangups, we invite you to see what Toastmasters has to offer by visiting Washington CountyToastmasters. At the animal shelter they told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie. At first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie andhis things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of whichwere brand new tennis balls, his dishes and a sealed letter from his

previous owner. See, Reggie and I didn't really hit it off when we got home. We struggled for twoweeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe itwas the fact that I was trying to adjust, too. Maybe we were too much alike. I saw the sealedenvelope. I had completely forgotten about that. "Okay, Reggie," I said out loud, "let's see if your

previous owner has any advice."To Whomever Gets My Dog: Well, I can't say that I'm happy you're reading this, a letter I toldthe shelter could only be opened by Reggie's new owner. I'm not even happy writing i t. He knewsomething was different. So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bondwith him and he with you. First, he loves tennis balls. The more the merrier. Sometimes I thinkhe's part squirrel, the way he hoards them. He usually always has two in his mouth, and he triesto get a third in there. Hasn't done it yet. Doesn't matter where you throw them, he'll bound afterthem, so be careful. Don't do it by any roads. Next, commands. Reggie knows the obvious ones---"sit," "stay," "come," "heel." He knows hand signals, too: He knows "ball" and "food" and"bone" and "treat" like nobody's business. Feeding schedule: twice a day, regular store-boughtstuff; the shelter has the brand. He's up on his shots. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet. Goodluck getting him in the car. I don't know how he knows when it's time to go to the vet, but heknows. Finally, give him some time. It's only been Reggie and me for his whole life. He's goneeverywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in thebackseat, and he doesn't bark or complain. He just loves to be around people, and me mostespecially. And that's why I need to share one more bit of info with you...His name's not Reggie. He's a smart dog, he'll get used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt. But I justcouldn't bear to give them his real name. But if someone is reading this ... well it means that hisnew owner should know his real name. His real name is "Tank." Because, that is what I drive. Itold the shelter that they couldn't make "Reggie" available for adoption until they received wordfrom my company commander. You see, my parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I could've

left Tank with ... and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq, thatthey make one phone call to the shelter ... in the "event" ... to tell them that Tankcould be put up for adoption. Luckily, my CO is a dog-guy, too, and he knew where my platoonwas headed. He said he'd do it personally. And if you're reading this, then he made good on hisword. Tank has been in my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been myfamily. And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family, too, and that he willadjust and come to love you the same way he loved me. If I have to give up Tank to keep thoseterrible people from coming to the US I am glad to have done so. He is my example of service andof love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades. All right, that's enough.I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter. Maybe I'll peek in on him andsee if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth. Good luck with Tank. Give him a goodhome, and give him an extra kiss goodnight - every night - from me. Thank you,Paul MalloryI folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. Sure, I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyonein town knew him, even new people like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago andposthumously earning the Silver Star when he gave his life to save three buddies. Flags had beenat half-mast all summer. I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staringat the dog. "Hey, Tank," I said quietly. The dog's head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyesbright. "C'mere boy." He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood f loor. He satin front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn't heard in months. "Tank," Iwhispered. His tail swished. I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears

lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment justseemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my face into his scruff andhugged him. "It's me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me." Tank reached upand licked my cheek. "So whatdaya say we play some ball?" His ears perked again. "Yeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?" Tank tore from my hands and disappeared into the next room. And when hecame back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth.

    COURTNEY LUSKIN RENSSELAER

COUNTY DAIRY PRINCESS.Welcome to 2013, as we enter the New Year many of us are thinking about

our waistlines. How can milk help? Milk and milk products are a great choice

because they are loaded with nutrients including calcium, potassium, phosphorus,

magnesium, zinc, protein, vitamins A, D and B12, and riboflavin When you are

thinking dinner, many of us enjoy a creamy base to our food this time of year.

White Sauce is the base sauce used as an ingredient in the preparation of many

casseroles, soups, gravies and sauces. We can make it low fat by choosing fat

free and low fat milk. The sauce can be thinned or thickened by subtracting oradding 1 tablespoon each of butter or flour.

BASIC WHITE SAUCE: 2 tablespoons butter; 2 tablespoons

flour; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1 cup fat free or low fat milk. Melt butter

in a pan and whisk in flour and salt until smooth. Gradually stir in

cold milk, cooking and stirring until sauce boils; reduce heat and

stir until sauce becomes smooth and thick. When sauce thickens,

simmer for an additional 10 minutes over very low heat, stirring

occasionally. We enjoy adding a lean meat or veggies to our

sauce and having it over whole wheat pasta.

CHEESE SAUCE: Stir in 1/4 - 1 whole cup of grated low fat

sharp Cheddar or Monterey Jack. Stir until cheese melts.

NACHO SAUCE: One quarter cup of chopped jalapenopeppers may be added for Nacho cheese sauce.

SOUR CREAM SAUCE: Add one half cup fat free sour cream

and 1 teaspoon each of chopped fresh chives and dill and serve

as a topping for baked potatoes. Info:518-663-5220
