Background

• born in Colchster, England to a middle class family

• son of Jerome Gilbert who worked as a borough recorder

• Never married, he dedicated his life to his studies

• was Queen Elizabeth I physician

Education

• attended St. John's College, Cambridge in 1558

• in 1561 he obtained his Bachelor's Degree, his Master's degree in 1564, and his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1569

•  In the 1570's he set up medical practices in London

• became a member of the Royal College of Physicians
