Background
• born in Colchster, England to a middle class family
• son of Jerome Gilbert who worked as a borough recorder
• Never married, he dedicated his life to his studies
• was Queen Elizabeth I physician
Education
• attended St. John's College, Cambridge in 1558
• in 1561 he obtained his Bachelor's Degree, his Master's degree in 1564, and his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1569
• In the 1570's he set up medical practices in London
• became a member of the Royal College of Physicians
Contributions to Science Community• Discovered the connection of electricity and
magnetism!!!• He increased the understanding of the magnetic
compass that voyagers used in that time to prevent getting lost out at sea
