My mother was an ESP member and Iwas a recipient of an IEA scholarship whilein college. I joined the IEA Student Pro-gram and found the conferences andworkshops very helpful. After becoming a teacher, I attended the Illinois ReadingConference. It was very exciting. I heardfrom experts in the field and found newand innovative ways to help in my class-room. IEA is there to support educationpersonnel in every aspect of their jobs.

Jennifer Smith, teacher at Monticello Middle School

Sheila O’Bryen of Lanphier High School inSpringfield credits the Consortium for Educa-tional Change with providing tremendous

guidance to the school and its staff for the past several years.

Lanphier received a federal School ImprovementGrant and as a result, the CEC began working withthe school to help it define its student-centeredgoals and to stick to those goals through its improve-ment process.

“I think the most important thing the CEC has done is to get us focused and tohelp us keep everything focused on teaching and learning,” O’Bryen said.

CEC helped the staff develop goals that it referred to as “the paw,” a nod to theschool’s mascot of a lion.

“They made us focus on the most important things. All we do at our school comesback to it — the professional development, the collaboration. It all fits into our focalarea. They guide our leadership structure. There are so many demands from the out-side, but we always come back to the ‘the paw.’”

CEC has also worked to build leaders within the walls of the school, helped estab-lish plans for new student growth initiatives and helped guide the decision-makingprocesses through data.

“If you have not become a better teacherthrough this (process), shame on you. Every-thing has been available to us to becomebetter, to be better leaders. All of what we dois focused on students. Professionally, I’vegrown tremendously.”

THE GOAL OF THE GOVERNMENT RELATIONS DEPARTMENT is to addressthe political goals of the IEA and enhance our “effective locals” by helping leaders build a strong political base, allowing locals to be strong partners with other stakeholders in creating high performing systems that support successful students. By projecting localsin the political arena, members become further involved in their association.

It’s often hard to understand how whathappens at the Illinois State Capitol build-ing can directly affect you in your school. But it does. And, there’s an easy and rewarding way to get involved. Join theGrassroots Political Activist program.
