!ARTIST STATEMENT !I am a Shapist.

I utilize art to re-contextualize existing social and cultural notions

I don't make the object; I make something of the object.

I question the function and purpose of art.

I have a genuine interest in hybrid forms and works that cross artistic boundaries, as I believe that

it is in this proposition that new forms arise.

I engage a variety of mediums (digital media, pigment, earth, and other mundane objects) in the

creation of my live and mediated performance and installation works.

I employ elemental modes that instigate, either physically or cognitively, interaction from the viewer.

The transformative potential of art interests me.

The process is my product.

I investigate my African American heritage, African diasporic identity, and spiritual practice.

I initiate myself.

My body is an “animate” object, material, and site.

I am a seeker and a wanderer in constant search of my primal identity.

! !!Conceived in 2012, Whitney Hunter[MEDIUM] is a project-based performance collective focused

on the creation and presentation of original group works that integrate live performance and

mediated technologies. Whitney Hunter[MEDIUM] fosters collaborations with artists, performers,

and technologists of varying mediums with a collective mission towards communication through

experimentation.

Hunter is more than a choreographer of movement. His work bravely explores the reaction between light and dark, movement and stillness, art and architecture. Images of expressionist artists Klein and Pollack are conveyed through his use of body paint and a large paper “canvas” mounted to the floor. !Hunter approached the work with an improvisational spirit, which gave the work an ephemeral, fleeting quality. This quality is one of the most endearing, and defining aspects of dance.
