Here is Martha Davies’ Original Sampler . . .THE ATTIC

Here’s what Linda says about her very charming sampler: Martha Davies is a Scottish sampler originally stitched on 26ct linen using wool. I choose to reproduce it on 36ct linen using overdyed cotton threads. As I stitched, I could sense a bit of little Martha’s personality. She was not a perfectionist by any means, but was persistent. Her stitches were fairly messy with a lot of mistakes and missed stitches, but she kept at it, finishing the entire piece. The sections stitched in oblong cross were very intricate, yet she managed to get through them and they lend a unique aspect to this seemingly simple sampler. Note how she alternated colors of oblong crosses on the large deer to create an interesting look. I loved the bright fun colors she used and the sweet little motifs she incorporated into her piece......the two leaning birds on either side of the beautiful red house, just made me smile. I truly felt her come alive as I stitched and hope you will too.

Nicola will only be teaching Bathya on one visit to the US, at The Attic and at Sassy Jacks Stitchery, in 2019. This will be the only opportunity you have to learn from Nicola how she stitched this sampler to achieve a truly reversible finish.

Bathya is a very special sampler with an amazing history - please see this video where Witney Antiques talks about the sampler shortly into the film. Bathya is also featured in many reference books.

Bathya stitched her sampler with 15 vibrant shades of silks, ingeniously devising stitch patterns and motifs. There is so much to delight in her sampler. She used a wide repertoire of stitches of varying intricacy. The stitches include two different versions of reversible cross stitch ~ one forms a cross on the reverse with a vertical stitch on the left and the other a four-sided stitch on the reverse. She also used double back stitch and diagonal double back stitch. These stitches appear plaited from the front and as two parallel rows of back stitch on the reverse ~ you might know them as closed herringbone. Other stitches used were double-sided Italian stitch; alternating double back stitch in groups of three, which represents the Trinity; detached buttonhole; french knots and satin stitch. Bathya’s whitework bands are particularly elegant. Narrow whitework bands were an important part of a stitcher’s repertoire; they were used on collar bands both as an adornment and as stiffening so that the collars would stand proud. It is important to us that we have smaller groups so that everyone has unrushed time to spend with Nicola, so class sizes will be limited.

Message from Robert, our SAL leader: Update on Sarah Stewart Hardman 1824 from NeedleworkWorkPress – the Attic Needlework’s 2018 Stitch-A-Long I completed the last section on Sarah on Saturday December 1st. She was such a fun stitch and will be a perfect companion to Ann Raynor. I hope those that were stitching Sarah along with me are also close to finishing. For the months of November and December we are working on the small house and lawn to the right of the man’s staff (pages 11 and 12). Again we are spreading this over a couple of months since there is a lot of stitching involved in that lawn and the over-one sheep. Make sure you pay attention to the small flowers in this section of the lawn. I took a colored pencil and highlighted them on my chart so I would not miss stitching them. As I did in the other sections, I stitched the small sheep in tent stitch since the fabric I am using is a tightly weaved 46-count linen. I want to thank Vickie, Maegan and Jean for giving me the opportunity to moderate and stitch this sampler as a part of the 2018 Attic Stitch-A-Long. Your fr iendship, knowledge and contributions to this hobby are unmeasurable. As always, Happy Stitching and please continue to share your progress and finishes to the group.

HARIET HARTLAND 1782 $31, 285 x 332 ~ Here’s what Nicola tells us about this extraordinarily beautiful sampler: Once in a while a sampler comes along that makes your heart skip a beat or even two. Hariet’s striking and decorative sampler is one such sampler; she has created much excitement at Hands Across the Sea Samplers. No doubt working under the vigilant eye of her needlework teacher, Hariet created an exceptional, balanced and exactingly worked sampler with vibrant polychrome silks. They still glow jewel like some 236 years after the last stitch was laid. Hariet’s sampler is both beautiful and exuberant, and reflects many hours of patient discipline as she plied her needle. The stitches used are cross stitch over one and two threads, rice stitch, straight stitch, and a handful of double running stitches, all exquisitely executed on fine linen by Hariet at only ten years of age. The verses have been divided into three sections by bands of pine trees perched on top of deliciously textured little hillocks; a collection of brightly coloured urns and vases filled with a profusion of gay flowers in full bloom, birds abound and two undulating vines, one heavily ladened with tulips and the other with carnations. The model was exquisitely stitched by Lisa Brown, and we are thrilled to tell you that the model, along with the charts, arrived at The Attic on Wednesday.

Announcing a New SAL Beginning February 1 with . . .

MARY CLAYTON $23, 201 x 183 ~ Here’s what Nicola tells us about this most charming sampler: Mary Clayton’s sweet sampler is a delightful example of a young child’s artwork. Mary tells us that she was aged 9 years when she stitched her sampler. She has given no year or location, however, we believe that the sampler is English and was stitched in the mid 1800’s. An imposing building first catches the eye. Maybe this was a church run school or orphanage as the roof is topped by a cross. Above hovers two trumpeting angels signifying the word of God and reinforcing our first thought that the building is connected in some way to a church institution. The bottom section of the sampler is full of out of proportion trees, potted roses and a basket of fruit. The sampler is stitched in cross stitch over two threads. There are a handful of cross stitches that Mary “squeezed” into her sampler that sit one thread wide and two threads high. The sampler is suitable for b e g i n n e r s t h r o u g h t o a d v a n c e d needleworkers. The design area is 201 stitches (w) x 183 stitches (h). The sampler has been reproduced using the mellowed colours found on the front of the sampler today.

Saturday, January 19, 9 - 4 PM, Tsubaki ~ Here’s what Jackie tells us about this remarkable project: Tsubaki was created to celebrate my son and our family. The connecting vine that is worked on all four sides of the Tsubaki carrier represents our lives together, each individual but forever connected. The side panels also flow from panel to panel to complement the tiny cherry tray hand crafted by Mr. Miller from Miller's Carpentry Creations. Notice how the wood grain of Mr. Miller's cherry tray panels match perfectly.

It’s the latter that captivates the literary curiosity of Vickie LoPiccolo Jennet. She’s looking forward to taking us on a condensed but illuminating journey through the history of sampler verses. As part of your class, you will also receive the chart to Carolyn Alder Aged 7, a charming 1827 sampler with an equally charming verse: “Industry taught in early days not only yields the teacher praise, but gives us pleasure when we view the works that innocence can do.” Vickie and daughter-in-law Maegan Jennett merge their talents and passion so that NeedleWorkPress can do its part to foster an appreciation for historic stitching and related items. They’re proud to be part of The Attic’s 2019 Sampler Symposium program.

Sunday, January 20, 9 - 4 PM, Elizabeth Charlotte Cotton 1753 ~ Reproduced by Nicola Parkman of Hands Across the Sea Samplers from a sampler in her private collection as an Attic Needlework exclusive. Here’s what Nicola tells us about this exquisite 18th-Century sampler: Elizabeth, who we believe was known as Charlotte, diligently plied her needle laying reversible cross stitches, cross stitches over 1 thread, satin stitches, Montenegrin stitches, double back stitches and Algerian eyelets. Stitched from a palette of 15 jewel like colors including garnet, rose, terra cotta, peach, gray greens, soft golds, yellows and celadon green, the sampler has a stitch count of 353 x 303.

Ode to Jane, Friday, January 18, 9 - 4 PM ~ Here’s what Jackie says about how this pièce de résistance came to be: Many years ago I found this wonderful antique lace display desk - it was large - much too large for a lap desk. I needed to scale it down - so I contacted Mr Miller from Miller Carpentry Creations and asked him to take a look at the piece. He also was intrigued by the mechanics and shape of the piece. He asked me what size I would roughly need and I said abut 7 x 8 and cherry, please. Time passed and one day a superbly mini version arrived at my home. I could not wait to start working and creating times that would showcase this beautiful handcrafted desk. When thinking/dreaming of stitches and how bands of stitches flow into samplers, Jane Austen's use of words that weave into brilliant tapestry of stories come to mind. I was inspired to create my own tapestry of silken stitches as the desk's bottom Stitches that inspire, capture our essence of needle artists.

Fit for a Queen with Black Walnut Carrier, Monday, January 21, 9 - 4 PM Here’s what Jackie tells us about this project:

These treasured black walnut carriers that measure 4" x 3 1/2" have been patiently waiting for the perfect project. I think I have been saving them for more than 10 years...been so long, I can’t remember. The carriers are very special. While teaching in San Fransisco in the summer of 2017, I was treated to photos from Helen Keaton, showing me her recent purchase from Portobello Road,London. My fingers started to itch and, long story short...Helen graciously offered the needleroll to be shared with all of us. Thus the perfect project for these treasured black walnut carriers. Kit will include all supplies to complete the Fit for a Queen with walnut carrier - using a variety of silk fibers, ribbon from Japan, 40-count fine linen to complement the scale and size of the antique, and silk taffeta carrier lining. I am delighted and honored to offer Fit for a Queen with walnut carrier at the January 2019 Sampler Symposium. My goal is to enable the students to complete the needleroll, complete the entire project. I know there are many of us that love Queen-stitch passionately, but to stitch an entire outer body panel and then an interior body panel with four attached pockets could be an overwhelming and daunting task. The twist....I shall offer the class project needleroll with the latice motifs in Queen-stitch in the wonderful color hues inspired by the antique needleroll, omitting only the Queens-stitch backgrounds. This will allow the linen to create a backdrop that blends and complements the silk-colored textured Queen-stitch lattice motifs.

MARY KNOWLES 1824 ~ THE FINDING OF MOSES $24, 257 x 237 ~ The sampler has been reproduced with DMC, Weeks, and Gentle Arts cottons in the brown tones shown above, and some sampler purists will want to stitch it exactly in the hues that are shown in the chart. Most of the time I am fine with that. However, I would get bored very quickly stitching this in the “drab brown” and other brown shades, with a smattering of turquoise and gray green, that have been charted. I am doing a conversion that takes some liberties with the colors, imagining what Mary would have chosen for her sampler in 1824, for example, the border, where I’m certain the vine was green and the berries other than drab brown and very light drab brown. The conversion is still a work in progress. When I’m finished, I will photograph it and publish it in a future newsletter issue.

A Beautiful Bristol Orphanage Sampler

THE ATTIC

I was having difficulty stitching with the neuropathy in my hands, difficulty hanging onto the needle, difficulty with miscounting with chemo brain (at least now I have something to blame it on)… so I thought it would be best to stitch monochromatically, and I remembered that I had this sampler, EMMA SANDFORD by Dutch Treat Designs, patiently waiting to be finished. So I have been working on it and finding it was the perfect project for this time and place. I am so close, and I hope I can finish it very soon. But then I got distracted on the sweet round designs from My Big Toe Designs, on the following page . . .

These are part of a four-part series from My Big Toe Designs that I thought were the perfect size (63 x 63) to try out on the new-in-the-shop 56ct Kingston linen. This is fabulous Zweigart even-weave linen and the weave makes it very easy to stitch on. For a short time we’re offering 9 x 9 cuts of cream Kingston for $8, enough to do all 4 designs in this series.

This is Terry’s stunning fi n i s h o f A L I C E SMITH aka SHEEP M A Y S A F E L Y GRAZE, reproduced by Victorian Rose Needlearts that she stitched on Lakeside’s 46-count Vintage Pecan Butter using The Attic’s Tudor silk conversion. Anne’s beautiful A FAIR LADY SAMPLER from Gigi R ~ This is one of my most favorite samplers. My apologies for the l ight reflection in the glass ~ fresh from Sandy’s framing studio, I should have photographed it before it was framed.

And almost on the same day I saw Jacqueline’s beautiful finish of this very lovely and unique sampler reproduction from Gigi R ~ and it reminded me that I really need to finish mine. It’s such a fun sampler to stitch, giving satisfaction after the completion of each motif.

Dear Friends, I have wonderful news to share with you: No more “regular” chemo treatments but a year’s worth (every three weeks) of Avastin infusions, a drug that, studies show, staves off the recurrence in Stage 3-4 ovarian cancer, which is what I had/have. I have so much to be thankful for this Holiday Season … for God’s grace … for all of you who have supported, encouraged, comforted, prayed for, cheered me on and continued to do business with The Attic … and for my amazing staff, who with oftentimes Herculean effort kept things running smoothly and our customers happy! Christmas/Holiday Blessings to each of you, Jean

Ella’s Cuisine IF ( Intentional Foods) Café & Market

Almost losing their daughter to a food allergy prompted the owners to provide the community with allergy-friendly meals. Read about their story on their Website ~ they’ve just opened and are working with a small menu this week until their grand opening next week ~ I can’t wait to get their take-home dinners to make it easy for our evening meals! Open 8 AM - 8 PM.

A restaurant specializing in French cuisine, Ella’s Cuisine has opened in the space occupied for many years by the Pink Pepper Thai restaurant. The lunch & dinner menus feature classic French dishes such as salade nicoise, croquet monsieur, and crêpe Suzette. I had lunch there this week ~ everything was delicious; and a friend took the salmon home for dinner and said it was fabulous. Website Open for lunch (11 - 3 PM) and dinner (5 - 10 PM).

Our thoughts, those of my staff and mine, have gone frequently to the BCRF Silent Auctions that we hosted for the previous 20 years … and how prescient that we hadn’t planned it for this year. We missed seeing your exquisite and very generous donations … filled with emotion and mixed feelings … so grateful to Tess and all of the many volunteers who made it happen … and, most of all, to Alice, who contributed 50 handmade items every year for 12 years!

The October family wedding was beautiful … so happy we were able to be there. The dog was the ring bearer.

Entering Lambeau Field to watch the Packers beat the 49ers … a dream come true, thanks to nephew Luke, who got 12 tickets! … dressed with lots of layers but still got pneumonia, but it was worth it!


Lots of birthdays … John’s 80th, Hannah’s 19th, and Ralph’s 51st!Celebrating Thanksgiving, with so much to be thankful for!
