PASTOR’S COMMENTS AND FINANCIAL REPORT

FOR THE THREE MONTHS ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2017 I am pleased to report that our Offertory Income, the major source of our Parish Revenue, continues to be strong. Our total Offertory Income was 6.9% ahead of last year and 4.2% more than planned. The Comparative Statements of Activities for the Six Months Ended Dec. 31, 2017 and 2016, and the Com-parative Statements of Financial Position Ended Dec 31, 2017 and 2016, are included in this report. As indi-cated in my last report, the formats of the Statements have been changed to reflect the revisions made by the Diocese in the New Accounting Manual. I hope that this new format, which follows the more normal presenta-tion format, will make it easier to understand. These statements have been reviewed by the Parish Finance Committee at their January meeting. Highlighted below are some of the other key items for the period.

• Other Regular Income is running slightly ahead of last year. Most of this difference is related to the change in the market value of our investments and a higher level of Votive (Candle stands) In-come. Our Religious Education Income will be less than planned.

• Non-Operating Income (Gifts & Bequests) reflects some of last year’s large gifts that did not repeat this year. However $131,000 in Gifts were received for the Recreation Center.

• Contributions and Assessments has two major items: Cathedricatum and Parish Scholarships. Cathedricatum is the Parish support of Diocesan Operations. • Professional Fees and Insurance includes the cost of Musicians and Other Non-Employee Costs,

Profession Fees and Speakers. We have Architect Fees for the plan prepared for the proposed Rec-reation Building. A Build-Out Cost estimate of that concept exceeded what I feel we should under-take when considering some of the programs we are contemplating. Thus, I have had our builder prepare a scaled-down version which would still provide all the necessary facilities. This approach resulted in a significant reduction in cost, yet meets our needs. I will have more on this in the near future at the Town Hall Meeting on February 25.

• Last year we incurred costs related to building and grounds maintenance which we will not do this year.

• The reduction in Utilities results from some saving of our conversion to LED lighting and the timing of one oil delivery.

• Program Expenses consists of Religious Education Expenses.

I nto Your Hands I Commend My Spirit. Words spoken by the Lord on Good Friday, just before He breathed His last breath. Ever been depressed? Ever happened to you? Felt

like everything was going wrong? Maybe you lost everything. Maybe you wondered whether life was worth living. There are various degrees of depression, but make no doubt about it: it happens to all of us. Whether you’re standing at an ambo on the altar or sitting in the pews...there are times when things don’t look great. Maybe you lost a spouse...didn’t get that raise you needed...maybe an exam at school. And then we think of Job - poor guy. A good man who believed in God. He trusted in God. He lost everything. He questioned God: Why me? What did I ever do to deserve this? Sometimes when there’s nothing to hope for, when you’re feeling helpless, it’s our human tendency to turn inward rather than seeking the One who helps. Job discovered that when you give it to God, understanding He is in charge, something happens: He gives us a pathway to peace. I am a believer in Hope. We are believers in Him. Jesus Christ offers us Hope that no other can. My collar doesn’t eliminate stress in my life. But when things are looking dark, no matter what, I say: Hold On to Hope. Jesus has the answer if we only give it to Him.

On the Cross, He asked the Father, “Why do you forsake me?” Yet He came to say, “Into your hands I commend my life.” Not a bad example. May we never forget. And may we always find our hearts in Jesus Christ. No matter how dark. No matter how stressful. It is Christ who offers us life. It is Christ who offers us Hope. If you’re having a rough time, I’m glad to talk. I’m glad to listen. I’m glad to help and support. If things are great, thank God by singing and responding at Mass. If things are tough, and you’re unsure, do not lose Hope: for it is Christ who will show you a pathway to peace of mind, a pathway to peace of heart and a pathway to peace of soul. Amen. Msgr.
