I first met Dr. Ray Ewing
when he became head of the
Department of Speech and
Theatre at West Texas State
University. He reminded
me of a dark-haired Santa
without a beard, so I
instantly felt drawn to him.
He had a kind face, and
his demeanor was calm.
I was coming to the end
of my bachelor’s degree
when Dr. Ewing came on
board. I wasn’t sure what
I was going to do for the rest of my life, but he saved me and asked me
to be a Teaching Assistant for the department. I jumped at the opportunity.
Dr. Ewing always made me feel welcome whether I was asking a question
about teaching styles or how to approach a subject. He was very easy to
talk with and never minded an interruption. His office was an open door.
And he always made his students feel safe in that he was protective
and wanted the best for us. He wanted us to grow, be sure of ourselves
and reach for all that we could grab. Dr. Ewing encouraged and was
very good at making you see other opinions and thought processes. He
never criticized, but allowed you to travel the road at your own pace
while sharing as much as he could share. He was never afraid to show
his heart, and that probably impressed me more than anything.
Dr. Ewing was real and lived like the man he was.
I don’t recall ever having taken a class with him, but it’s been a few years.
I regret that. I should have made an effort because I think I would have
had an even better experience. He was a good man, and that matters.
Barbara Palmer ’78 and ’81 is the assistant director for Alumni Relations and University Engagement at WT.

The College of Business CFA Research Challenge Team and the 2014-2015 Lady Buff softball team were recipients of the 2015 Presidential Order of the Silver Buffalo Award presented by Dr. J. Patrick O’Brien, University president in April. The CFA Research Challenge team was recognized for winning the 2015 Southwest U.S. Championship. The Buff softball team won a Silver Buffalo for winning the NCAA Division II National Championship. The team ended its dream season 60-7 to win the first national championship in program history.
SILVER BUFFALO DESIGNATIONWTAMU was designated as a
Purple Heart University at a special proclamation presentation in March. The honor recognizes WTAMU’s exceptional work with veterans, dependents and active duty military as a top military-friendly university. The designation expresses gratitude to all veterans for their contributions to defending the freedom of the United States.
PURPLE HEART One Sessions with Deep Diver, a student-run production, took second place in the studio category out of more than 75 entries worldwide at the Broadcast Education Association Convention. One Sessions with Deep Diver also won a silver Telly and seven bronze Tellys at the annual Telly Awards out of almost 12,000 entries. One Sessions with Johnny Reverb also received two bronze Tellys.
Senior nursing students at WTAMU conducted more than 200 health screenings and gave away 500 meals at their April Homeless Health Fair at the Guyon Sanders Resource Center in Amarillo. The event marked the program’s seventh health fair with the largest turnout ever in terms of collaborating partners. WTAMU nursing students provided health screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar checks and weight measurements along with health information and a gift and free lunch. Community partners include TTUHSC Breast Center of Excellence, Amarillo Public Health Mobile Immunization Unit, Harrington Breast Clinic Coach, Amarillo Area Breast Health Coalition volunteers and TTUHSC Sim Central/BCE/OBGYN mobile unit to provide services ranging from HPV vaccinations to cancer screenings.

Buffalo Advertising, WT’s student advertising team, is one of eight teams that competed at the American Advertising Federations’ National Student Advertising Competition June 10–13 in Las Vegas. The group won the right to compete at nationals after taking first at the district level in April. The team also won two of three special judge’s awards for Best Media Plan Award and Best Promotions Award.

West Texas A&M seniors Emma Love, cross country, Chontiquah White, basketball, and Michael Williams, soccer, earned the prestigious President’s Award honor at the University’s annual Athletic Awards Banquet in April. WTAMU President Dr. J. Patrick O’Brien bestowed the honor on the three student-athletes. Love and White earned co-President’s Award honors for the women’s side, while Williams earned the accolade for the men’s side.
PRESTIGIOUS PRESIDENTIAL NOD Ten WTAMU students and faculty from
Nepal raised funds to help friends and family at home devastated by the recent earthquake there. The group set up booths on campus to encourage the WT community to donate to the Red Cross and Health Foundation Nepal. Since they couldn’t physically be in Nepal to help, they hope their efforts to inform the local area helped provide support for their family and friends at home.
The WT equestrian team rode to a third-place overall finish at the IHSA National Championship in May, and individual riders Maggie Lanham and Angela Bradley were named individual National Champions while Cana Fitzgerald took the Reserve National Championship in two separate classes.
The University’s broadcasting program brought home 12 awards and dominated the studio/live performance and entertainment categories at the annual NBS Convention. One Sessions with Johnny Reverb received four grand prize awards.

It’s her daily routine—pulling up to Amarillo’s Palo Duro High School, entering the building,
greeting fellow teachers and administrators and acknowledging shout outs from students as she
maneuvers her way down the backpack, student-filled hallway toward her second-floor corner classroom. And it’s there, in a room filled with tables, chairs,
posters and shelves of books, that Shanna Peeples ’97, spends up to 12 hours a day teaching, motivating
and encouraging students to do their very best.

It’s probably the most asked question at reunions and homecoming events—what do you do? Typical answers run the gamut from teacher to lawyer, but the West Texan staff thought it would be interesting to highlight those professions that are a bit different or unusual. If you have a fun, interesting and different job, let us know at [email protected].
ay 15 proved to be a pretty nice day for WT’s annual Ring Ceremony, certainly not one cool enough to wear a jacket. But there he sat, tall and proud, with his letter jacket, patiently waiting to receive his graduation ring. Delmer “D.R.” Tuggle ’56, sat among a crowd of May graduates who were waiting to receive their 2015 WTAMU rings, but he was there to get a ring emblazoned with West Texas State College (WTSC).
Tuggle, a Panhandle native, came to WT in the early 50s on a football scholarship. He played running back and defensive tackle for four years under Coach Frank Kimbrough. That’s how he earned that “T” letter jacket and became a member of the Buffalo Courts “T” Club. To become a member, he agreed to have the letter “T” burned into his chest by the sparks from an old crank phone. The “tattoo” gave him bragging rights, but today those bragging rights should focus on that letter jacket. It not only still fits, but looks as good as it did almost 60 years ago.
After earning a Bachelor of Science degree, Tuggle went on to become a state highway trooper, followed by a career as a general adjuster and branch manager for the insurance company GAB Robins. He retired after 43 years and now lives in Amarillo with his wife Phyllis. There were moves here and there throughout his career, and his original college ring got lost in the process more than 20 years ago. He’s wanted to replace the ring for a long time and finally started working with WT’s Herff Jones representative to see if he could get one with WTSC on it. The May 15 Ring Ceremony marked the culmination of a dream to replace the treasured ring and his joy in finally having it.
“He is so excited to have it,” Phyllis Tuggle said. “He wears it every day.”
Yes, that jacket on a nice spring day was Tuggle’s way of showing pride for his alma mater, and now he has a treasured WTSC ring that reflects that same pride and can be worn every day winter, spring, summer or fall.

Everyone [at WT] was so welcoming and so nice. I made friends with professors, office managers, cashiers at the JBK and with students who did not even know where I was from and why I was there. In a nutshell, I found a home away from home.”

CROWDFUNDING UPDATE
est Texas A&M University entered the crowdfunding game earlier this spring, and thanks to the generosity of many, there has
been a lot of success that has directly benefited many WT students.
Donations from across the world came in from family, friends and alumni supporting various endeavors and student organizations.
The WT bowling team raised enough money to travel to a very important Indianapolis tournament, while the ag communication students have successfully raised funds to upgrade the Stanley Schaeffer Agriculture Learning Laboratory. The Buffalo Advertising team more than surpassed their crowdfunding goal as they sought assistance with their trip to the national competition in Las Vegas, while some travel-writing journalism students put a dent in their expenses for a trip to Asia.
With more projects on the horizon for Texas Wild, WT’s new wildlife series, along with many others, crowdfunding at WT is very much a part of present and future fund-raising efforts for hundreds of students at the University. It’s a great opportunity to ensure that these students have an exciting and impactful college experience.

On the death of Dr. Leigh Browning: My heart breaks with this news. I admired Dr. B. Leigh Browning and her vision was revolutionary – and all of her students were beneficiaries of her efforts – which many students unassociated with RTVF had no idea were sparked by her undying fire and passion for student’s futures. This is very sad and a sorrow felt too soon. Good bye Leigh – Revolutionize in Peace. You were the greatest influence I could’ve ever wished for. Billy Dawson
