There are many lan-guages in the world, butmusic is a universal way ofcommunicating among allpeople.

Members of theManistee High School

bands had the rare oppor-tunity recently to tap intothe knowledge of conduc-tor Llorenc Mendoza-Ruiz

who came to them fromValencia, Spain. Mendoza-Ruiz was brought toManistee by Ferris StateUniversity concert bandand symphony directorRichard Scott Cohen, whois a friend of Manistee AreaPublic Schools director of

bands Cynthia Swan Eagan.

Mendoza-Ruiz wasin Big Rapids earlier thismonth at Ferris StateUniversity to serve asa guest conductor at aIntercultural Concert at thecollege. He and Cohen have

been friends for the past20 years, and that is whyhe was invited to serve asa guest conductor for thatconcert.

This is the fifth yearthat Big Rapids has had aFestival of the Arts, andas director of the concert

bands and orchestra at the

college, I do a concert everyyear and bring in a guestartist, said Cohen. This

year, I brought in a goodfriend of mine from the

Valencia area of Spain.Cohen said that part of

Spain is well known for itsmusical background. Hesaid Medoza-Ruiz is one ofthe best in that area, andhas conducted symphonic

bands throughout Spain,

France, Italy, Holland andGermany.

I have lived in Spaintwice, and the secondtime it was as a FullbrightScholar doing researchabout the incredible band

world they have in thatarea, said Cohen. Theyhave 537 band clubs in anarea that is half the sizeof the lower pennisula ofMichigan. It is a big cul-tural symbol of the region,and our guest conductor isone of the most renowned.He is a wonderful teacherand conductor.

It was the driving forcewhy Cohen invited himto the be the 2012 guestconductor. Cohen addedthat he felt some of the areahigh schools could also ben-efit from the opportunity.

We are going around asa cultural exchange to the

high schools because bandsin Spain do not work likethey do here, said Cohen.

Most school age stu-dents take band afterschool instruction, and itis not part of the regularday studies. The studentsalso participate in many ofthe community bands withother age groups.

Swan Eagan said thatwhen Cohen contacted her,she jumped at the opportu-nity to bring a world classconductor to the classroomto work with her students.

He is actually going tobe rehearsing our studentsfor some of the pieces weare going to be doing at ourfestival next Thursday,said Swan Eagan. So, thisis a wonderful opportunityto have two great sets of

Thelma Duggin, a formerhealth industry CEO, knewthis to be true in businessand in life, but when it cameto the life of her motherElizabeth, advance planning

Duggin and her sib-lings, none of whom livein Alabama, arranged forSolutions for Caregiversto develop a care plan for

Elizabeth. She was assigneda case manager named KathHawk to work directly withElizabeth at her home.

The way Duggin saw it,Its better to do this beforethey need it.

But there was an issue.Mom did not want it,

Duggin said.It turned out this simple

step helped the whole familyoutpace a series of potentialproblems. When an illnessplaced Elizabeth in the hos-pital, she asked to receivecare from her former physi-

cian. Kathy filled out thepaperwork to enable that tohappen. Elizabeths conditiorequired her to receive careat a skilled nursing facility;Kathy rated different facili-ties and found one that mostclosely met Elizabeths needs.She took the reins whenElizabeth developed diabetesand, later, a blood clot.

It comes down to peaceof mind for your loved one,said Duggin. You feel totallycomfortable and confident.Kathy will pick up on things

when she talks to our mother

that we wont. Its been alifesaver.

Now 91, Elizabethremains active and activelyinvolved with her family.

Elizabeth now residesin assisted living. She talks

with Kathy weekly and Kathsends the family a weeklyreport.
