The West Georgia Wolves take one more dip out of Gulf South Conference play this weekend with the annual Homecoming game, taking on the Albany State Golden Rams. Both teams are reeling af- ter their first loss of the season last weekend. The Wolves took a 17-7 loss to the Delta State Statesmen in Cleveland, Miss. last Saturday, while the Golden Rams just missed out on a massive fourth quarter comeback, falling 35-27 to North Greenville University at the ASU Coliseum in Albany. LAST WEEK IN-DEPTH For the Wolves, a late first-half touchdown and one long drive from Delta State in the second half was the bulk of the offense for the Statesmen against West Georgia. The UWG offense struggled against one of the top rushing defenses in the nation and the Wolves came away with no points on two drives into the red zone. For ASU, the Golden Rams fell behind by a 25-6 mark to North Greenville before mounting a furious comeback that fell just short. NGU rushed for 250 yards against Albany State in the contest. THE COACHES West Georgia is coached by Gulf South Conference veteran David Dean, who is in his first season at the helm of the UWG program. This is his 10th season as a head coach, as he spent nine years at Valdosta State until the 2015 season. Dean is 2-1 at West Georgia and has a record of 81-28 overall as a head coach. Gabe Giardina is in his first season at Albany State, and has a 2-1 record in south Georgia. CUSTIS CLAIMS ANOTHER SCORE Senior running back Travis Custis had the only touchdown of the week for the Wolves against Delta State, marking the fourth-straight game where the big back has had at least one rushing touchdown. That dates back to the 2016 season, as he had two scores against UWF in the season finale. He had two more against Fort Valley State in the 2017 opener and has had one touchdown in each of the last two weeks. He now has eight career touchdowns at UWG. PARDUE STEPS FORWARD Safety Montrell Pardue has stepped up as a leader in the first three games of the season for the Wolves. He has the only interception of the year thus far, and last week, he had the most tackles of anyone this season thus far. Entering the week, he led the team with nine tackles total. Against Delta State, Pardue had 12 tackles in the contest, including 11 solo stops. Head Coach David DeanIn late January the University of West Georgia was faced with the task of filling a vacancy as head football coach. The job wasn’t vacant very long. David Dean was available; ready, willing, and eager to become UWG’s 11th head football coach of the modern era. Dean brings a resume to the UWG post that rivals almost any coach in the nation, at any level. Dean is this season entering his 30th season in the coaching pro-fession, his ninth at West Georgia. There is one common thread to his 29 previous seasons: David Dean is a winner. The former wide receiver at Georgia Tech was a key staff member at Valdosta State from 1988-1991. He next spent eight seasons on the staff at UWG, an era that saw the program experience a large number of firsts. That includes the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coordina-tor, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s circle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, averaging 42 points a game during a postseason run to a second national title. How rare is a second national championship? Consider that college foot-ball has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s. During that time only three football coaches in the state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS title at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in States-boro with a pair of crowns of his own. The other coach on that very exclusive list is David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State covered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II confer-ence, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 12-4. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous indi-vidual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 players signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and one national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flourishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is following the most suc-cessful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 cam-paign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caro-line (20), Allison (18), and Natalie (12).

Game PreviewThe 2017 season took a different turn last week, as the West Georgia Wolves lost for the first time this season. Defensively, the Wolves remain as one of the top teams in the nation, but the offense took a hit against Delta State. The Wolves rushed for less than 100 yards against the Statesmen, with Travis Custis and Devontae Jackson each netting just under 40 yards. Jackson was a bright spot in the return game for West Georgia, picking up 122 kickoff return yards on just three returns against the Statesmen. With J.J. Jones returning a punt for a touchdown the week before, kickoffs will be interest-ing for opponents to scout. Safety Montrell Pardue had one of the best weeks in recent memory against DSU, leading the Wolves with 12 tackles in the game, including 11 solo stops. The Wolves are 2-0 in University Stadium this season, and this week’s crowd should be large with Homecoming 2017.

Game PreviewThis is the second-straight opponent for the Wolves that has been ranked at one point this season among the top-25 in the nation, and is the second of four-straight to achieve that feat. That makes Saturday’s Homecom-ing game against Albany State the middle of a major gauntlet for the Wolves. Albany State brings a multi-facet-ed triple-option into University Stadium this week, led by redshirt freshman quarterback Chancellor Johnson, who has 580 yards pass-ing with five touchdowns. He has mulitple receivers with more than 100 yards receiving on the year, led by Mike Green with 178. But on the ground, ASU has been equally good, with two backs coming into this Saturday’s contest with at least 200 yards on the year. Those yards have mostly been between the 20s, as the Golden Rams have just three rushing touchdowns on the season. Two different defenders lead the way for Albany State, with Emmanuel Brown and Marquez Thomas both with 17.

This Week in the GSC West Georgia is the only Gulf South Conference squad playing out of league action this week, as the Wolves host Albany State at 2 p.m. on Saturday in a battle of 2-1 teams that were ranked last week. Delta State and Shorter kick off the weekend in the eastern time zone, as the Statesmen and Hawks will play in Rome, Ga. at 1:00 p.m. DSU looks to start 4-0 after snapping a five-game losing streak to West Georgia last weekend in Cleveland. Shorter has started the season 0-3 and lost by a 31-6 margin at Florida Tech last week. A large battle looms in Florence, Ala., as the West Alabama Tigers visit UNA. The Tigers are 2-1 on the year and have been scoring a lot of points with a high-flying air attack. North Alabama recovered from six turnovers last weekend at Valdosta State to survive with a 30-24 victory. The Blazers will try to rebound from their second loss of the season and recover from an 0-2 start with a trip to West Florida. The Argonauts took down Chowan last week by a 51-23 margin and come into their home game with the Blazers undefeated after a cancellation due to Hurri-cane Irma. In the final game of the weekend, Florida tech looks to remain undefeated in conference play on the road at Mississippi College.

Individual StatsAt first glance it might seem as if the Wolves are lacking in the defensive department, as the leading tackler heading into week four is Montrell Pardue with 21 stops. He also has the only turnover caused by the defense, as he has one interception. Prior to the Delta game, the defense had only been on the field for an average of 54 plays per contest this season, limiting the opportunities for multiple tackles. In addition, the Wolves have 10 different players with at least 10 tackles on the year, as defensive coordinator Scott Symons has been building depth while allowing just under 300 yards per game.

Against the PassThe Wolves have been especially stingy against the pass through the first two games of the year, allowing just 126.0 yards per game through the air. That is good enough for the Wolves to have the 11th-best defense in the nation against the pass. West Georgia has eight pass breakups thus far on the year, with Pardue leading the way with two. Six other players have at least one breakup on the year.

Gardenhire almost thereRedshirt freshman defensive end Deandre Gardenhire has started the first three games of the season, winning GSC Freshman of the Week in Week 1, and having a solid season thus far. He has one sack on the year in nine tackles, but has been a demon for opposing quarterbacks, as the Camden County native has four quarterback hurries on the young season. He is coming along well and will have a shot to be a very good defensive end for the Wolves for four years. Add into the mix sophomores Jay Johnson and Chad Price, and

the defensive end spot looks very strong in the future for the Wolves.

Townsend makes a splashTransfer defensive tackle Ledarius Townsend had the first sack of the season for the 2017 UWG defense against Fort Valley State. He picked up another sack against Miles in Week 2, and now has seven tackles overall and two sacks.

Dominant DefenseSince Scott Symons took over the defense for West Georgia in 2014, the Wolves have been much more stingy than ever before. In that span, West Georgia has had 42 games, and the UWG defense has allowed 300 yards or less in 23 of those contests. One would think that a 227-yard performance for the defense against Fort Valley State would rank high on the list, but the opening night performance ranks just 13th among the best overall yardage allowed by the Wolves in the past four years. The Miles defensive effort was the ninth-best under Symons, as the Wolves allowed just 196 yards.

Vs. Albany State under SymonsThe Albany State game in 2016 is the only one that

defensive coordinator Scott Symons has coached against the Golden Rams, and that was before Gabe Giordana took over as the head coach in Albany. The Wolves allowed 367 yards against the Golden Rams in 2016, but only 23 points in the contest. Much of the yardage gained came from a very athletic and elusive quarterback on the ASU side of the ball. But the defense and special teams was the saving grace for the Wolves, as A.J. Leggett had a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown and Devontae Jackson had a 97-yard kickoff return for a touch-down, providing 14 points for the offense.

Top-10 in the NCAAAfter giving up over 300 yards for the first time this season against Delta State this past weekend, the Wolves fell out of the top-10 nationally in several categories. West Georgia is still 11th in pass defense, allowing 126 yards per game through the air, but the top category is still scoring defense. Despite the loss, the Wolves gave up only 17 points, bringing the average for 2017 to 11.0 per game, good for seventh in the nation.

Breakout Game for JohnsonDefensive end has been a high-profile position for the Wolves in the past seven years, as multiple All-Amer-ican caliber athletes have had their hand on the ground in University Stadium. Sophomore Jay John-son, who transferred to UWG from “Last Chance U” East Mississippi Community College, had a breakout game against Miles in the second week of the season, collecting two sacks.

Candler at QBSophomore signal caller Willie Candler had a ca-reer-high 22 completions against Delta State last week-end, but the Atlanta native did not have a touchdown pass. That broke a string of six-straight games with at least two touchdown passes. He also had two intercep-tions, the first of the 2017 season. He has 171 career pass attempts and has 15 touchdown passes to just five interceptions.

Balanced Rushing AttackThrough the first two games of the year, senior Travis Custis and junior Devontae Jackson have led the UWG rushing attack, with Custis averaging 62.7 yards per game and Jackson with 56.0 per contest. But against Miles, it was running back by committee, as four differ-ent runners had at least 40 yards en route to a 248-yard night on the ground.

Freshman Kicking ProwessFreshman kicker Trey Wiggins has had a solid start to his career at UWG. The nearby Heard County native comes into the Albany State game 11-for-11 on extra points thus far this season and is 3-for-4 on field goal attempts. He missed his first of the year last week against Delta State, but is still ranked 35th nationally in field goal percentage. He was named GSC Freshman of the Week after the Miles game in Week 2.

A Potent Return GameThe Wolves are strong in the return game through the

first three games of the year, led by Devontae Jackson

and J.J. Jones. Jackson has been electrifying on kickoff

returns and Jones has been equally outstanding on punt

returns. With 4.3 speed, Jones easily pulled away from

the defense against Miles for a 59-yard punt return for

a touchdown in Week 2 of the season. It was that return

that earned the Mississippi native the Gulf South Con-

ference Special Teams Player of the Week, his career first

weekly award since transferring to UWG two years ago.

Jackson moves upThe 2017 season has been solid for Devontae Jackson, as first the junior moved into the top-10 among all-time rushers at UWG against Miles in the second game of the year. He also continues to move up in the UWG list among all-purpose players, as he is currently sixth all-time in that stat category. Last week against Delta State, he had 170 all-purpose yards, fueled by 122 yards in the return game. That brings him to a career total of 3,094, passing Seth Hinsley to move into sixth. He is 180 yards way from Felix Addo to move into the top-5 all-time among all-purpose backs. He is also just under 1,000 yards away from becoming just the fourth player in school history to have 4,000 all-purpose yards in a career. The career leader is Mark Evans with 5,091.

Solid DistributionThirteen different players have a reception in the 2017 season, giving Willie Candler plenty of options heading into each play. The Fort Valley State game saw the most players catch a ball, as 11 different receivers hauled in at least one pass in that contest.

Leading ReceiversShaq Roland leads the Wolves on the year in receptions, coming into the fourth weekend of the season with 15

catches for 167 yards thus far. Roland’s number of catches is tied for fourth in the Gulf South Conference this season and he is seventh in total receiving yards. Emoni Williams is just behind Roland with 10 recep-tions, but is second on the team with 123 yards and two touchdowns. He is tied for second among Gulf South Conference receivers tied with two scores.

Vaughan Watch 2017In the 2016 season, Marcus Sayles set the school record

for games started, as with the last game of the year, he

started his 45th career game at West Georgia. Senior

offensive lineman Harley Vaughan is on track to surpass

that record this season. The All-American started at left

tackle for all 14 games of his freshman year in 2014,

then moved to center in the following season and has

started every game of his career. His career start number

sits at 43 heading into the Albany State game.

The David Dean era begins in 2016 after a solid run over the past three years. Just seven years ago, West Georgia went an entire season without a rushing touchdown, and in the past three years, the Wolves have produced a top-10 season in school history. In the 2016 season, the final game of the year gave West Georgia a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball heading into 2017. The Wolves had 52 carries for 336 yards and five rushing touchdowns in that contest, the eighth time in school history that UWG had five or more rushing touchdowns in a single game. In the 2014 run to the NCAA Semifinals, the Wolves put up more than 3,000 yards rushing for the first time in school history, shattering both the yards and touchdowns record by more than 700 and seven, respec-tively. The 2015 season was more of the same, with the Wolves eating up yardage to the tune of another school record of 5.1 yards per carry. Prior to Hall’s ten-ure, there had been no 1,000-yard backs in the previous 10 years, and the Wolves have had a back eclipse that number in each of the past three seasons. First, it was Seth Hinsley in the 2014 campaign, followed by Devontae Jackson in 2015. Last year, Lamarcus Franks became the 11th back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, hitting for 1,009 yards as a senior.
