CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish April 20, 2014 EASTER SUNDAY “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, A few years ago, I was invited to go to a San Antonio SPURS basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks. It happened to be a playoff game and I was sitting in the cheap nosebleed seats high up near the rafters. It was one of those memorable games that was evenly matched and there was a lot of back and forth scoring. The end of the game was particularly exciting and the tension in the arena was palpable because the score was so close that either team could win. The Mavericks were ahead. With only a few seconds left, the SPURS inbounded the ball and miraculously, one of the team members (I think it was Manu Ginobili), made a spectacular 3-pointer to put the SPURS in the lead! A roar of elation went up in the arena! In order to win, all the SPURS needed to do was to make a good defensive play and avoid a foul. The Mavericks brought the ball back down the court and then came the heartbreaker. At the last second, Ginobili fouled and the SPURS lost the game! Elation turned into gut-wrenching sadness. You might be asking yourself why I am talking about basketball on Easter Sunday. No. It’s not because the SPURS are in the playoffs again. Rather, there is a hint of an analogy here. Granted, a basketball game is not even minutely as significant in comparison, but the heartbreak and shift of emotion from extreme happiness to utter disappointment is what the disciples experienced at the death of Jesus. The disciples had come to know Jesus intimately and witnessed his miracles. They had opened their lives and their hearts to him and been transformed into people of hope. Their expectation was high that Jesus would usher in an entirely new era of peace in world history. The elation that they felt as Jesus rode into Jerusalem to shouts of “hosanna” was dashed with his arrest, scourging, passion, and death. Imagine if you had walked with Jesus and had come to love him, only to lose him so unexpectedly. We know that the disciples were lost without him. They had gathered together and were trying to sort out what had just happened. They were crushed at his death, guilt-ridden for having abandoned him in the hour of his most pressing need, and numb from the sheer brutality of his death. What was to become of them now? Then imagine that you suddenly received news on that third day, that Jesus had risen from the dead! Imagine the disbelief! Imagine the returning thrill within your heart at the prospect that the one you loved had returned from the dead! The reversal of emotions would have been dramatic! Suddenly, everything begins to fall into place. The meaning of it all slowly begins to sink in. Jesus had to die in order to undo that which was a consequence of sin. Jesus had to die and rise in order to conquer the grip that death has on us. No longer does death have the final say! Life comes from death and the prospect of eternal life is now made available to us! Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection is a significant thing! His victory over sin and death means that there is nothing in this world now that we need to fear. Even death itself has lost it’s ominous power to threaten us. Christ is victorious and in him, nothing can prevail over us. What does this all mean? It means that Christ always wins. No matter how impending doom may seem to lurk around us, we can have confidence that Christ reigns supreme. When we look at the world, we may see all kinds of troubling and ominous events transpiring. We may feel like everything is in decline. Nevertheless, 50 Years of Faith

we as Christians bring the hope that Christ is alive. He is risen from the dead. He was, is, and always will be victorious. Despite the troubling trends, Christ will always prevail. Our task as Christians is to bring the Good News of the Risen Christ into this world. We effect change by doing so because, as we proclaim the victory of Christ’s resurrection, and as we do good through charitable works, we transform the world and bring it into a participation in Christ’s life.

Let’s make this Easter especially fruitful by resolving to not be negative. Rather, let us proclaim with joy that which we proclaim every Easter: Jesus is Risen! On behalf of Fr. Joseph, the staff of St. Pius X, and myself, I would like to extend to all of you heartfelt Easter Greetings and warm wishes. God bless!

For their projects, these scouts provided the leadership in planning, implementing, and completion of projects benefiting our community utilizing volunteers from our Troop, friends, and family with a combined total of 741 service hours. Steven’s project was a wheelchair ramp through the Barn of the Angels ministry at the home of a retired couple not far from our church. Daniel completed a landscaping project at the Corpus Christi State supported living center removing hazards and beautifying the area. Brian erected a net 14’ high at the Laguna Shores baseball fields to prevent lost foul balls saving the league an estimated $900.00+ a year.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONSchool NewsBy Principal Bryan Krnavek

He is Risen! The students and staff of St. Pius X Catholic School wish you a very blessed and happy Easter. Think of our students whenever you use those little bottles of holy water that were blessed on Holy Saturday. They were labeled and filled with water by our 5th and 6th graders last week. It’s our way of giving back to our parishioners.

Last week was a short one for us as we started our Easter holidays at noon on Holy Thursday. We won’t return to school until Tuesday, April 22nd. Although it was a short week, we managed to accomplish several things during those 3 ½ days. We had Last Supper celebrations, a Seder Meal, progress reports for the last quarter of school were sent home, and our K3, K4 and K5 students had a visit to the Planetarium at King High School.

All of our classes took part in Last Supper celebrations this past week, but our 6th graders participated in a traditional Seder meal that was prepared and served by our parents. It took place in the Parish Hall and featured food such as lamb, charoset, celery, matso crackers, and parsley. It was a beautiful ceremony that was made even more special because of our special guest, a parishioner and choir member who volunteers at our school on a regular basis. Her name is Ruth Baltz. She converted to Catholicism many years ago after being raised in the Jewish faith. Her Jewish roots run deep and she was happy to share her knowledge with the 6th graders. It is fascinating to listen to her talk about it. She not only knows about Seder meals, but all of the other traditions and ceremonies that our Jewish brothers and sisters celebrate throughout the year. Thank you Ms. Ruth, for sharing your stories with us!

Last week I mentioned that our Golf Tournament exceeded the $31,000 that was raised last year. Based on the final numbers, I am happy to report that the tournament this year raised $39,534.16. That is about $8800 more than last year. Again, THANK YOU and GOD BLESS everyone that helped make this event a huge success. These are the things that keep our school open and running. I would also like to sincerely apologize to Morgan DeSive, daughter of CC Country Club Golf Pro and St. Pius X parishioner, who I had thanked in last week’s bulletin as Megan. I was in a hurry to meet the bulletin deadline and named her Megan. Morgan, Thank you for your help with the Golf Tournament and please accept my apologies for renaming you.

Have a blessed week!

Vacation Bible SchoolVBS will be June

23rd – 27th this year. Registration begins May 1st. First come, first serve. You can pick up registration forms in the parish office.

p.m. in CC#1. We also offer a recertification class every second Tuesday of the month. The next recertification class will be Tuesday, May 6th, @ 6:30 p.m. in CC#1.

Diocesan Vocation Awareness RetreatHave you settled into a pattern of living? Or are you still

searching for a choice that challenges and gives life? In other words, are you trying to find God’s plan for you? The Diocese of Corpus Christi is offering you an opportunity to explore possibilities for your life choice: A Vocation Awareness Retreat for men and women between the ages of 18-35 on the weekend of June 20- 22. Want more information? Call Rachel in the Vocation Office at (361) 882-6191 or contact Sr. Anna Marie Espinosa at (361) 774-4910.

VOCATION CORNER Nearly every adult has thought at some time in their late

years,” I always wondered what it would have been like if God was calling us to be a Sister or a Brother or a Priest” Or, again, “You know, I always wondered what it would be like to have lived in a convent, or be a pastor, or a foreign missionary…”. Perhaps they never considered it seriously, were never encouraged by family or friends to pursue their dream, or perhaps hadn’t inquired or been counseled to consider it further. Having given young people the opportunity in recent weeks to think about marriage and the single life, now we can consider what the possibilities might be for those who would like to think that they perhaps are being called into the Consecrated or Ordained Life.

SOMETHING NEW FOR YOUA couple of Religious Congregations that work here in the

diocese have lay men and women who are associated with the Sisters in their prayer and good works. These Associates are often invited to participate in a variety of the Sisters’ events, enrichment programs, celebrations and gatherings. They usually receive relevant Congregation publications and mailings, also. Soon you will be given an opportunity to know a bit more about them; watch for a display, also.

Heartfelt ThanksOn behalf of Fr. Joseph and myself, I would like to express

gratitude to all of the staff of the parish, all volunteers, musicians and ministers, the RCIA team members, and anyone else who contributed to making our Holy Week celebrations so meaningful.
