If you have another email address that you would ALSO like Mrs. Pellegrini to use, please send that to the above address also.

and press “Enter” http://mywebpages.comcast.net/llpellegrini/

Getting Started-6

Add the Biology page to your “Favorites” or “Bookmarks” Click on “Favorites” or “Bookmark” Click “Add to” Favorites/Bookmark Click “OK”

On this site you will find notes, powerpoints, web links and information on the different topics we will be studying this year.

Getting Started-7

Now go to Ursuline’s Wiki:– Type the following into the Explorer address

bar:– http://wiki.ursuline.org

– Log in-Type your username and password (You should have received these in an email from Mrs. Pellegrini)

Getting Started-8

A wiki is a program that allows lots of people to edit its contents.

At the very top of the page , you should see your name in red. Words in red indicate there is no page for this item. So you are going to make a page about you. This should be a fun little activity and help you get to know each other.

Click on your name.

Getting Started-9

Click on “edit this page” This is YOUR PAGE! You can write anything

you want about yourself (within reason, of course). Remember- the people at Ursuline who have passwords (like ME! ) can see this- but no one else can.

So, to get started write something about yourself, such as: My favorite activities, then go to the bottom and save the page. You will see the finished page.

Getting Started-10 Click “edit” again. Put two equal signs (==) before and

after My favorite activities , like this: ==My favorite activities==; then click enter. Write three equal signs (===) then: Sports

– then another 3 equal signs (===), then click enter Type an asterisk (*), then one of your favorite sports, then

click enter Type an astrisk (*), then your 2nd favorite sport, then click

enter Type 3 equal signs then: Non-sport Activities

– Then type another 3 equal signs, click enter Type an asterisk, then one activity, click enter, and repeat

this Now that you see how it’s done- you can elaborate on it. Save the page

Getting Started-11

You should be able to tell now that

– the more = signs you have, the smaller the heading

– Typing * will cause a list

– Typing ** will cause a more indented list

Getting Started-12 To add a picture/clipart:

– Click “edit”– Click on “Upload file” in the toolbox on the left– Browse your computer for a picture/clip art you want to

include on your page (a photo of you would be great!) Click “Upload file”

– Copy the name of the file exactly as shown in the uploaded file, i.e. crickandwatson2.jpg

– Copy all of the following and substitute the name of your pic for “crickandwatson2.jpg” ; instead of “Watson and Crick” give your pic a caption.

– [[Image:crickandwatson2.jpg|right|250px|thumbnail|Watson and Crick]]

– Click save page. Your picture should now appear on your page.

Getting Started-13 There are more rules, and I will give them to you later. Or,

if you want to venture on your own, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Quick_guide Or Go to the Ursuline wiki main page and scroll down to

“Sample Page”. You will find some tips there. You can now add anything you want, like a picture or

information about yourself and your friends. Just remember, you will have to click on the “Edit” tab at the top of any page- or sometimes in the middle of a page- to make any additions or changes.

Finish your page with information that will introduce you to others in the class. You can always change the page later if you want.

Getting Started-14 Click on the “History” tab at the top of your page- this

shows every edit that has been made to your page, and who did it.

Anyone with a password can edit your page- and you can edit others. Remember, we don’t tolerate any kind of vandalism, and each time you edit a page, the change is listed with your name. That’s why it is very important not to let anyone have your password.

(Note: Only Ursuline Upper/Middle School students and teachers have access to the wiki, so it does not have public access.)

Also- to comment on someone else’s page, go to their page and click the DISCUSSION tab; OR to leave a message for a user, click on their TALK tab. (To find a user’s page, type “user:lpellegrini” in the search box, substituting the username for mine in this example.”

Getting Started-15

Now you should be able to access: 1. Mrs. Pellegrini’s Edline Page, 2. Mrs. Pellegrini’s Biology Webpage 3. The Ursuline Wiki by simply going to your list of favorites.

4. Check the links to make sure they work.
