English Language Arts (ELA) Block �• A balanced program that includes reading, writing,
listening, and speaking standards as outlined by Common Core State Standards. �
We utilize: �• Guided reading �• Writing (Writing Framework, daily journals, poetry
journals, interactive and shared writing)�• Phonemic awareness games/activities�• High frequency words (sight words)�• Phonics" " " " "�• Read Alouds�
What Is Guided Reading?�
• Small, flexible groups meet with the teacher daily�
• Lessons are based on the developmental progression of reading behaviors. This includes comprehension, fluency, and decoding.�
• Student progress is determined using formal and informal assessments.�
Writing in Kindergarten �Developmental (scribbling, drawing, letter-like
forms, letter strings, invented spelling, conventional spelling)�
Daily (journals, shared and interactive writing)�
HCPSS Writing Framework for Kindergarten includes units of study in the following areas: �
§ Writing about reading �§ ABC books �§ Book reviews�§ Thank you letters, notes, and cards �§ Personal narratives�§ Fact books�§ Acrostic poems�
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics�
Kindergarten students will focus on objectives in the following areas: �
ü counting and cardinality�ü geometry�ü measurement and data �ü number and operations (base ten)�ü operations and algebraic thinking �
A variety of resources are utilized to help each child reach and/or exceed the end of year objectives.�
Our program also works towards developing problem solving skills and the ability to verbalize mathematical thinking.�
Our program is hands-on, manipulative based.�

The Market �
Homework �o Begins in October�o Fasten the monthly calendar into the journal.�o Initial the calendar square to indicate 10-15 minutes of reading and
5-10 minutes of sight word practice.�o Returned to school the last day of the week �o A list of additional activities and a place for parent initials will be
given. �o Goal: Complete 10 suggested activities in the month and student
receives recognition for doing them. Recognition is left to the teacher’s discretion.�
o An activity that requires a recorded response of some kind should be done in the homework journal. �
o Initials next to suggested activities will be checked at the end of each month.�
• Begin in mid-October�• Scheduled through VolunteerSpot or Sign Up Genius. Additional information will be received at a later date.�

using our ROAR Store order form.

ROAR Thermometer Students start each day
in the dark green area. Students who are
doing an exceptional job displaying ROAR
behavior can be acknowledged by
moving their names to the lion. These
students will receive a sticker to wear home!
When does a student complete a self-reflection form?
The student completes the form as soon as he moves his clip to Self-Reflection on the
ROAR chart. This occurs after a formal verbal warning.
Minor Incident Referral
These infractions can include:
• Getting out of seat after multiple reminders
• Incessant talking • Quiet refusal not to
complete work • Not following directions
• Difficulty keeping in personal space after several redirections
• Incessant calling out after multiple redirections
• Running in the hall
MIRs are minor infractions connected to learning behaviors.
3 MIRs = 1 Office Referral
REMEMBER - If the incident is major and falls on the following
list, you should go immediately to an office referral.
• Bus misbehavior • Cheating and academic
dishonesty • Destruction of property • Discrimination • Disrespect towards adults • Disruption • Failure to serve assigned
consequences • Fighting • Insubordination
• Bullying • Leaving school grounds
without permission • Physical attack • Plagiarism • Profanity • Refusal to obey school rules • Threat to staff or students
(physical or verbal) • Weapons • Uncooperative behavior
