From the Principal…

THANK YOU We are very fortunate to have the support of our community as we implement the guidelines around returning to school. I do thank you for your support especially at the departure gates. Please remember to maintain social distancing as you wait for your children to leave the school grounds. If at all possible, walking to and from the school would assist with traffic congestion. Reminder - It is important that children travelling on the school buses tap on and off with their Opal cards for each trip.

MORNING BELL Parents are reminded that our first bell is rung at 9:10am so that lessons can commence promptly at 9:15am. It would be helpful if parents could leave home a little earlier so that the children are inside the school gate by 9:10am. On a rainy morning like today, please try to have the children inside the school gates before 9:05am to avoid any congestion.

ICE CREAM DAY Staff and students enjoyed their ice creams on Friday. We owe an enormous thank you to Mrs Elliott and her helpers in the canteen for preparing all of the ice creams. They were delicious! As you are aware, the students at Batlow also enjoyed ice creams on Friday. Our funds were applied to the cost of their ice creams and any additional funds will be donated to the school for use in their student welfare programs. Altogether $603.00 was raised which is a fantastic effort from a community with a big heart. It was a cheerful way to end the week for students at both schools.

PUMP SOAP AND TISSUES If you are able to donate some pump soap for classrooms it would be very much appreciated. They are being used before the children enter the classrooms and throughout the day. Any support families can offer would be very much appreciated. We are also calling for donations of tissues for classroom use.

UMINA BEACH MENS’ SHED

The fellows from the Men’s Shed have replaced and repaired our toy boxes at the sandpit. We are very fortunate to have this level of support from this community group.

SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS Nominations are called for membership of this Council. Please have your children bring your nomination to the office and place it in the nominations box. Nominations will close on June 12. Please complete the slip at the end of this newsletter and return it to the school if you wish to nominate a parent representative on our School Council.

YEAR 5 OPPORTUNITY CLASS Changes to the opportunity class placement process for 2020 Year 4 students The 2021 Year 5 opportunity class placement process was put on hold in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation. We now have a revised and simplified timeline for the OC placement process to ensure that students and families can have certainty about their placement as soon as possible. The changes include:

A new date for online applications. Parents must apply between 9 June 2020 and 26 June 2020. Late applications will not be accepted.

A new test date - Wednesday 16 September 2020. (please note the change in date from the one published previously)

To ensure fair and consistent assessment of students across New South Wales, students will be offered places based only on their test results this year – there will be no school assessment scores. There will also be no opportunity for appeals given the tight time frames. For further detailed information I encourage you to visit (https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

P&C News: New winter jacket available by SPECIAL ORDER ONLY With our kids returning to school this week, the P&C are excited to introduce a brand new winter jacket. Our new winter jackets will be embroidered with the school seagull logo, similar to the existing polo shirts, and cost $45:00 each.

Available via special order only, our newest addition to the uniform shop provides warmth and weather protection. The outside is made from waterproof nylon, and the inside is fully lined with polar fleece. The jacket also has a concealed hood in the collar – perfect for rainy winter days!

HOW TO ORDER These jackets are currently available via a special order only – you cannot purchase them through the uniform shop website. To place an order, please complete the UBPS SPECIAL ORDER WINTER JACKET form online and make an online payment directly to the P&C account as follows: Account: 204688 BSB: 032-526

You can scan this code on your device to access the online form. Alternatively, click here or access the order form at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MPC7FC9

When we have received your completed form and confirmed your payment, a P&C representative will email you to confirm the order and an estimated delivery time*. *Please note as a special order only, we do not currently hold these jackets in stock. The order will be filled with our supplier after payment, and given current COVID related delays with packages, your new jacket may take 3 weeks to arrive – all the more reason to order today!
