GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Last week Year 6 leaders and our Year 5 JRC representatives went to
Wagga Wagga Charles Sturt University for the GRIP Leadership Conference.
Batlow joined schools from throughout the region to learn about leadership roles
and how they can become better leaders in our schools.
The students enjoyed the interactive experience and all had a great time.
Principal’s Message
Firstly, I must apologise to Taylah Bowman. At our recent assembly to
recognise student achievement, I have accidently over-looked a certificate.
Taylah is in fact the first student in 2017 to reach the ‘Platinum Level’
within the merit system. This will be amended, on Tuesday morning when a special
assembly will recognise Taylah’s outstanding achievement.
Our School leaders have this week visited Sydney to meet the Governor General. This is
an annual event for school leaders and always provides lasting memories. Mrs Wainwright
escorted Hannah Collins and Taylah Bowman to the event and a full report will appear in
the next issue of “Scoop”.
In light of a national awareness on waste materials, I have given instruction to Mrs Fairlie
in the canteen to commence on a new initiative. Our canteen sells hot milo and
commencing next week, hot soup will be available. Our effort to reduce waste will be
achieved through reducing the number of disposable cups that are provided. Students will
be encouraged to bring their own re-usable cup with a fitted lid and receive a 50 cent
reduction in the costs of milo or soup.
The wearing of the correct school uniform is pleasing. I encourage parents to continue to
support our school through insisting their children wear the required uniform. Obviously,
over winter, we all need to layer up with our clothing. I have informed students this week
that, I am comfortable with the wearing of larger coats that are not school uniform as long
as the uniform is underneath. We also encourage students to wear suitable head
coverings although these must be removed when entering classrooms.
Staff have now entered the reporting period of this semester. This task takes two-four
weeks to conclude with the final reports issued in the final week of term. This is not a time
for students to reduce their effort in learning, as any assessments conducted in the later
part of this term will provide the initial marks for the next reporting period.
Student merits will be tallied on Friday 9 June 2017. Students in both Primary and
Secondary will be recognised further for their outstanding efforts. Mrs Arnall and Mrs Dodd
have already commenced planning the celebrations for Week 10 of this term.
It has been delightful working with the Junior Representative Council members, who have
constantly tabled proposals to improve the learning at our school. The JRC intend to host
several fundraising events and technology days before the end of term. Their energy
levels are commendable.
Our debating teams have been in full swing over recent weeks. Although we have not
secured a win, Mr Bell has great confidence in the team and believes that victories will
come our way later in the year. On Thursday the team composing of Ryley Collins, Tahlia
Grant, Jack Gould and Liam Lengronne returned, having been narrowly defeated by
Harden. The team produced some great arguments that had everyone believing Batlow
Technology School had won. Even the opposition felt beaten!
Have a great week!
Mr Hodges

PRIMARY SPORT NEWS CROSS COUNTRY
On Friday 26 May 2017 a small
group of Batlow Technology students
travelled to Gundagai for the
Highlands PSSA Cross Country. All
students performed extremely well,
with a great attitude and
sportsmanship displayed. Several
students excelled on the day and
have qualified for the next level. Riley
Gould placed first and Jaymin Gould
gained a third place. Jim Howell
came a very creditable 5th , being
beaten on the line for 4th place.
The first four placed students have qualified for Riverina and Jim will be the first reserve
for this event. Both Riley and Jaymin Gould will compete in the Riverina Carnival to be
held in Gundagai in several weeks time. Well done to all students.
ATHLETICS
On Friday 19 May 2017, Batlow Primary students travelled to Tumbarumba for the PSSA
Athletics Carnival. They had a great day competing in a range of field and track events. As
rain was predicted, the organisers hastened the events through and the carnival was
completed before the rain came. A number of our students performed very well on the
day.
Riley Gould was awarded the 11 years boys champion, winning the 100 metres, 200
metres, 800 metres, long jump and discus and placed third in high jump. Well done to
Riley on an excellent result!
Mackenzie Morton participated in several events and came first in 8 years girls 100
metres and third in long jump. A great result for Mackenzie, well done!
Jaymin Gould came third in the Junior Boys 800 metres recording a new personal best
time. Good work Jaymin!
Riley Gould and Mackenzie Morton have both qualified for the Riverina PSSA Athletics
Carnival to be held in Albury at a later date.
MORTIMER SHIELD
Year 6 student Dylan Taylor represented our school at the
Mortimer Shield competition held in Tumut on Thursday 25 May
2017. Dylan played in a combined Small Schools team. Dylan’s
team qualified for the next round to be played in Wagga in
June.Congratulations and good luck to Dylan.
NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME
The National Simultaneous Storytime is a
nation-wide campaign that occurs every year.
Each school reads the same book, on the same
date and at the same time. This year Batlow
Technology School participated in the read.
The book read this year was “The Cow Tripped
over the Moon” by Tony Wilson and Laura
Wood.
The idea around the simultaneous read is to
encourage children in K-6 to read for enjoyment
and to promote Australian writers and publishers.
We have this book, and many other enjoyable
books for students to borrow in our school
library.
FIRST LEGO LEAGUE ROBOTICS
“Why did the robot go back to robot school? Because his skills were a little rusty!”
Semester One has seen the return of the First Lego League robotics team. Since 2015,
our team has grown and has a younger focus than past years. This year the team
members are; Ben Howell, Benjamin Wilesmith, Amy Murphy, Rayleigh Gould, Chelsea
Lengronne, Alvin Lengronne, Dylan Taylor, Ethan, Riley Gould, Tim Gardner, Georgia
Pate and Jamie Crouch. The team decided on the name Beat Boppin’ Bots and are
currently practicing their skills for the First Lego League competition occurring later on this
year.
The team has been set challenges throughout this time. The first challenge was for
students to design and create a theme park ride using the EV3 robot and Lego pieces.
Students worked in groups to make a roller-coaster and a merry-go-round. Students
needed to work together to discuss ideas and code the EV3 to make the rides work.
Currently the team are working together to develop a maze out of Lego for the EV3 to
navigate its way through. They will need to create plenty of challenges along the way. The
Beat Boppin’ Bots will be continuing into next semester.
WANTED: LEGO PIECES
The Beat Boppin’ Bots are seeking any unwanted or unused Lego pieces for donation.
HSC DRAMA STUDY DAY
Earlier this month, Year 12 Drama students travelled to Albury to attend a HSC study day.
Throughout the day, students physically explored the individual project of performance
and worked together with other schools to develop ensemble work. In the afternoon, they
engaged in a ‘how to write a drama essay’ session. Students had a great day out and they
are excited to apply their new skills in their HSC projects. Thank you to Mrs Gorman for
providing them with this rich learning experience.
LET’S HAVE A SHAKESPEARE CARNIVAL! Year 11 Drama students, with the help of Hannah Collins, performed recently at the Regional Shakespeare Carnival in Albury. As part of an actor’s ensemble, students were asked to devise, rehearse and perform a seven minute Shakespearean piece with a focus on storytelling or theme. The Drama class choose the theme of manipulation and created a mash-up using the plays Macbeth, Othello and Hamlet. Students performed with passion and are to be commended for being critically self-aware and responsive to feedback and they look forward to competing again next year. The Drama class would like to thank Mrs Gorman for organising this opportunity and driving them to, and from, Albury.
YEAR 11 JINDABYNE EXCURSION
Seven Year 11 students, along with Mrs Wainwright
and Ms Jones, travelled to Jindabyne for a leadership
bonding trip. They had a jam-packed full three days
where they were involved in archery, frisbee golf,
rock-wall climbing, BMX bike riding and puzzle rooms.
On Thursday the group hiked to the summit of
Mt Kosciusko.
All students supported each other throughout the
activities and showed great maturity and
perseverance when the hike to the summit became tough. Both teachers were extremely
proud of how the students conducted themselves during the excursion and thanked Mr
Hodges for supporting the idea and helping fund the excursion. The students thanked Mrs
Wainwright and Ms Jones for organising and accompanying them on the excursion.
