SASS RECOGNITION WEEK Monday 1 September 2014 – Friday 5 September 2014
Thank you to all our professional SASS staff!
(Schools Administrative and Support Staff)
As the term continues on, I am continually amazed at how lucky I am to be working with such a
dedicated staff and with so many students willing to engage and participate in all learning
experiences offered in this exciting environment. It was enormously pleasing to witness our Primary
students and their teachers embrace the concept of the Book Week parade. Many of our students
and their parents made such an enormous effort to engage in the theme of the parade, which of
course was to dress up like your favourite book character. The costumes that were worn on the day
were outstanding. I would like to congratulate all students and teachers who participated in such an
enthusiastic manner. To make the day even better, over $2000.00 in book sales now guarantees us
more new books to add to our library collection. Thank you again to all the parents and students who
supported our school by purchasing books during Book Week and to the staff that tirelessly worked
to create such a memorable event. Well done to all.
We have students who persistently invest their time and energy actively seeking opportunities to be
involved in projects that benefit all of us. Our newly formed Student Representative Council have
already made such an enormous impact by their continual efforts to think of ideas or ways to
encourage positive changes within the school. Presently, the SRC, under the guidance of Ms Tofa, are
in the process of organising a whole school competition to encourage our students to be more
conscious and more proactive in promoting the environmental “green” message and to encourage
students to keep their surrounds clean. The upcoming BTS ‘Clean & Green’ campaign is a product of
an amazing group of students who are concerned not only about the environment but want to
create a more pleasant surrounding for us all to enjoy. Great work SRC.
In another initiative to enhance our students’ learning experiences, Mrs Arnall’s Boot Camp
commences this week for our Secondary students. On Mondays and Fridays at lunch time, Mrs
Arnall, an experienced fitness instructor, will lead and supervise interested students as they work
toward improving their fitness participating in a variety of activities. Students should take advantage
of this outstanding opportunity to work with Mrs Arnall and learn from her expertise. Thank you to
Mrs Arnall for her time and effort.
Preparations for Batlow Technology School’s 2015 Japanese Overseas Excursion are well underway.
We have 15 Secondary students currently from Year 8 to College II committed to this exciting
educational opportunity. The students and teachers are currently participating in a series of
lunchtime workshops to ensure that Japanese customs and cultural differences are appreciated and
the transition to such a different culture is less daunting. As a group, we recently simulated the
experience of manoeuvring through customs once we arrive at the airport in Japan, by engaging with
a ‘customs official’ in a relevant dialogue about our travel plans. Thanks to Mr Ellicott for his
thorough and thoughtful preparation regime. We are all enormously looking forward to this
incredible experience. Supervising teachers accompanying our students will be Mr Ellicott, Mrs
Wainwright and Mrs Crelley.
Congratulations to our High School Certificate Drama students who performed individual and group
pieces while being assessed by HSC markers at the end of last week. The recent HSC Drama and
Music Performance Evening hosted by Ms O’Loughlan and Mr Ellicott showcased a
talented and creative group of students who should be commended for not only their
bravery but their ability to perform often confronting pieces, in front of varied audiences.
Congratulations to Ms O’Loughlan and Mr Ellicott for organising this memorable evening
which really showcased all the effort that has gone into reaching this level of
The capacity to learn is a gift;
The ability to learn is a skill;
The willingness to learn is a choice.
performance by both students and staff. It was thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed by all who
attended. Our Industrial Technology students also had their projects assessed by the HSC markers
last week. Thanks to Mr Black for his diligence and guidance and our best wishes are with these
students, as with all our College students, who near the official HSC examination period. The Music 1
Practical Examination will see the HSC markers at Batlow Technology School next Tuesday. Good luck
to all these students and Mr Ellicott.
Always remember, effort is everything.

FLU SEASON IS HERE! Influenza is spread from person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. Remind your child about these good hygiene practices to minimise the spread of infection:
Anyone who is sick with influenza symptoms should stay home until their symptoms are gone
Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the garbage bin after use
Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective
Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. If you or your child develops influenza-like illness, seek the advice of your family doctor as you would with any other illness

COLLEGE BIOLOGY EYE ASSESSMENT TASK Our College Biology class recently completed an assessment task on looking closely at the human
eye. Part of the task was to create a 3D model of the human eye and correctly label the structures.
This allowed the students to unearth their inner creative side and come up with something unique
yet functional. They all did a fantastic job.
As we approach their HSC examinations, I would like to comment at how proud I am of the students
in the class; Floyd Cross, Lilly Kirkby, Jessica Lesniak, Gelske Vanderland and Sjoukje Vanderland.
They have all given their best effort
for the year, and have always
submitted quality assessment tasks
and along the way have had some
good laughs. I wish them the best for
their upcoming exams.

SRC REPORT
The SRC have had an extremely busy and productive term so far. Thank you to all the
parents, teachers and students for their continuous support.
To be a positive role model for your peers you have to be a responsible leader in all
areas of school.
By showing responsibility in the classroom and on the playground we can all create a
positive, friendly and clean learning environment at our school. With this in mind, the
SRC are proud to announce the first „BTS Clean & Green‟ competition. The
competition encourages students from K-12 to create a promotional poster about
keeping ‘BTS Clean & Green‟. The winning poster will be judged by Mrs Crelley and SRC
members. All entries must meet the following guidelines:
1. A catchy slogan that informs students to place their rubbish in the bin at recess
and lunchtimes
2. An appropriate image (for example, rubbish bins, recycling symbol, etc.)
3. The poster must be on A4 and include your name and year
4. The BTS school logo
Entries must be submitted to Ms Tofa by the end of Week 1, Term 4 (10/10/2014). So
yes, you have the school holidays to make your poster perfect. All entries will receive a
certificate of appreciation by the SRC in Week 2, Term 4 at the Principal’s Assembly
and the winner will also be announced at this time. The winner will receive a generous
$20.00 canteen voucher sponsored by the SRC and their poster will be displayed
around the school.
If you would like more information on the
competition please see your SRC year
representative or alternatively you can speak
to Ms Tofa.
Good luck to all entrants and remember be
responsible and keep BTS “Clean & Green”!
In addition, to the „BTS Clean & Green‟
competition the SRC will also be providing a
helping hand to our school canteen.
SRCee you at the Canteen

Vanderland and Lara Mclennan-Dye will be the first pair starting

How2Learn Report
Resilience Last fortnight, students participated in a ‘noticing’ task during their H2L lesson. Students had
to find the missing animals hidden in the wild, and notice the changes in the physical
environment. Why not have a go yourself and really notice the differences in these ‘spot the
differences’.
