I used to be boring. Need proof?Even as a child, I was never the typeto attract attention. For example, every year I was a participant in atleast one, and most years, twoChristmas programs and/or pag-eants. There was always at least onechild who stole the show by beingexceptionally talented or misbehav-ing in some obnoxious manner. Inretrospect, it must have been embar-rassing for the parents to witnesstheir child on stage in front offriends, neighbors, family andstrangers doing something unscript-ed that the audience found humor-ous.

Alas, I was never that child. I'msure my parents breathed a sigh ofrelief at the end of every perform-ance. However, that doesn't mean Idid everything as we did in rehears-al.

I can remember practicing oursongs complete with motions andgestures. Then as the big dayapproached, we would practice lin-ing up and marching onto the stage. On the day of the program, we weredressed in our finest and ready toshine. But no one ever told us whatto expect. The stage looks differentat night with bright lights shining inour eyes. And now the people listen-ing were grown-ups and there wereLOTS of them looking at us. It wasscary. Even though I knew thewords to the songs during rehearsal,I froze when on stage.

This must have happened morethan once because I can recall oneyear as we were getting dressed andMother was fixing my hair, I prom-ised to actually sing. Over the years,it did get easier and as I watched allthe new young ones going throughthe same process, I realized that it is

a rite of passagefor all children.Well, almost allchildren.

Let's fast for-ward to thepresent. I'mstill on stagefrequently sostage fright isno longer aproblem: untilnow. ThisChristmas Ibegin a newjourney with asecondary job as the music directorfor a local church. I've had the train-ing. I've had the experience. Butthis is the first time I am being paid,so naturally I want to do a good job. Some days, I feel pretty good aboutthis new adventure. Then there arethe days when I wonder what in theworld have I gotten myself into?

I find it interesting that this newposition begins on Christmas Eve.Perhaps that is why I've been think-ing so much lately about my previ-ous Christmas programs. If I shouldget stage fright, and do somethingamusing or embarrassing, my fear isthat the members of the church willbe telling the story and laughing foryears to come. Oh well, at least I'll
