Orphan Black Season 2: Clones & the origin of speciesIn a world where human cloning is rife, “Orphan Black” explores the moral and ethical implications of cloning in this dramatic Sci-Fi thriller

Following a spectacular first season of “Orphan Black”, Sarah Manning and her sister clones (played by Tatiana Masalany) embark on a journey where they must discover who they are and who created them.

Season 1 followed their journey, alongside Sarah’s brother Felix Dawkins (played by Jordan Gavaris), in discovering where they came from, whilst fighting against the fanatical religious group, the Proletheans, who make it their mission to wipe out the clones.

“Orphan Black” Season 1 set the stage

for an exciting showdown between science and religion. In the next season, expect the battle to commence and the killing to begin anew. Fans of action will be pleased.

Nature uNder CoNstraiNtIn Season 2, every episode title comes from the words of Sir Francis Bacon. After the events of Season 1, Sarah fights to discover the truth to Cosima’s biology and her strange respiratory illness.

Cosima must begin to understand herself, while her sister in Sarah looks for asylum after the capture of her foster mother Mrs S (played by Maria Doyle Kennedy) and Sarah’s Daughter Kira (played by the young Skyler Wexler).

The mysterious biotechnology firm the Dyad Institute also returns and the characters must learn to adapt to life alongside them again.

“Orphan Black” is not only a story of creation. It’s a story of adaptation, and where human clones would fit in the real world.

The age of Transformers has passed. Humans have control of their planet and have cast

away the robotic intruders. The surviving Autobots and

Decepticons are forced into hiding by humans looking to hunt them down. After the great battle which left many cities in ashes, but with the Earth still intact, a new wave of human beings rise, who soon attempt to harness powers beyond their control.

As the humans and Transformers refugees bicker amongst themselves over this dangerous power, a far more terrifying force awaits them.

Bye Bye, LeBeouf After the dismissal of Transformers star Megan Fox, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the gorgeous Victoria’s Secret model, replaced her. As such, there were no complaints from hot-blooded men.

However, one cannot help but wonder why the popular star of the Transformer movies, Shia LeBeouf, is not starring in the fourth instalment.

Apparently, LeBeouf had declared his gratitude to director

Michael Bay but feels that there is no more to explore with his character on the show, Sam. He has also said that he considers himself “Michael Bay-raised” but is looking to focus on films which will help him grow further as an actor.

“Sweetie, hand me my aLien gun.”Mark Wahlberg plays a countryside mechanic who collects scrap in the hopes of putting his daughter through college. His family’s life changes when he uncovers a hidden Transformer in what he assumed was a huge pile of scrap.

Upon discovering the Transformer, Wahlberg, or Cade

in the movie, is embroiled in a plot that will bring a reign of terror over his family and humanity. This begins with a paranoid government agent who visits to claim the Transformer and ends up threatening Cade’s daughter.

enteR the dinoBotSWhen the Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer first surfaced, many fanatics had lost sleep trying to figure out who the new additions to the robot armies are. To accompany the familiar favourites comes a series of new additions to the franchise.

Among the most exciting of these is the villain Lockdown. Seeing the amount of screen time this new bad boy gets in the trailer is enough to let one know this is one to keep your eyes peeled for.

Chendol Panna Cotta & other fusion loCal delightsLocal food goes fusion with interesting takes on dishes at Ujong

There have been conflicting reviews regarding the newly-opened

Ujong at Raffles Hotel Arcade but I am happy to report that I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Ujong and I will definitely return.

Ujong is a new venture with Executive Chef Shen Tan at its helm, previously of Madam Tan’s Nasi Lemak as well as Wok & Barrel. As such, some of the favourites from both these previous ventures have been given new life at Ujong along with new interesting creations.

Fusion LocaL Food Ba Chor Mee Pasta ($25.90), anyone? This mainstay from Wok & Barrel has proven so popular that they had to bring it back, and with good reason. The lovely five-spice pork confit is paired with an al dente handmade tagliatelle that is tossed in a spicy sauce with lard bits.

I found the noodles a bit oily and rich to finish on

my own, so sharing this dish might be better for your tummy.

My favourite was the Prawn Flavoured Noodles ($17.90), Ujong’s take on the har zai meen. It is a nod to the simple Indomie with kicap manis – sweet soy sauce – with onion and garlic. It also comes with crispy fried pork belly which I couldn’t help but finish all on my own. Oops.

Lard Bits & comFortUjong’s rendition of the traditional Pork Rib King zi char dish results in the Ba Kwa Pork Ribs ($35.90) which comes with a hefty portion of a full rack of ribs and a side of steamed white rice. The ribs are sweet, smoky and chewy at the same time but, unless you are very hungry, you might want to share this one as well.

The Nasi Lemak ($16.90-$19.90) from Madam Tan’s Nasi Lemak makes its fragrant return as well, with soft coconut rice and various items from beef rendang to five spice roast pork.

The desserts at Ujong are innovative and

a highlight. Shendol Delights ($15.90), a coconut panna cotta with gula Melaka syrup topped with homemade red bean ice cream, is a deconstructed chendol.

I liked the Pulut Hitam Pudding ($15.90) with gula Melaka butterscotch served with coconut ice cream. It was like a marriage made in heaven, between the sticky date

pudding and pulut hitam dessert. The gula Melaka butterscotch had us mopping up the dessert with whatever remaining portion we could find.

Chef Shen tells us that the Kaya Brioche Sticky Buns ($6.90) aren’t ready yet but we can look forward to a cinnamon bun-like swirl with candied ginger and a kaya glaze. Mmm, I can’t wait. And

From Beerfest to marketBeerfest Asia 2014 concluded with a bang, with several new beers launched in Singapore

The four-day-long Beerfest Asia 2014 exposition and festival recently concluded with plenty of new booze, rockin’ music and even comedy. There were performances from

the likes of Queen cover band Killer Queen and The Comedy Club Asia (partnered with Magners).

As for the main draw, from beers with as high as 32 per cent alcohol to the coriander and citrus Obolon White beer from the Ukraine, there were many interesting brews to try. With more than

30 exhibitors present, there were bound to be a number of new-to-market treasures to be found.

intriguing BrewsSummer Zest showcased the first Austrian beer in Singapore, Stiegl. It hails from the largest independent brewery in Salzburg, Austria.

The booth featured three main products, the Stiegl Goldbrau – a Salzburg specialty lager, Stiegl Weisse – a weisse beer rich in flavour and texture,

and the Stiegl Grapefruit Radler – a refreshing and citrusy shandy.

Other interesting booths included Applehop’s, bringing in the new-to-Singapore Gamma Ray Pale Ale and Black Betty Black IPA, which was brewed by Beavertown. It was started by Logan Plant, son of legendary musician Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin.

Another intriguing one was TSA Wines with Brewdog Dead Pony Club, a Scottish brewery. Brewdog had the beer with the highest alcoholic content, in the Brewdog Tactical Nuclear Penguin. This potent bomb has an alcoholic volume measuring a whopping 32 per cent!

german goLdStuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Café showcased a range of beers from the Stuttgart and Black Forest region of Germany.

Alpirsbacher Klosterbrau was a monastic brewery that was put back into

operation in 1877 by Johann Gottfried Glauner. His son was sent to Weihenstephan, the oldest surviving brewery in the world, to be trained as a master brewer.

The Klosterbrau Kleiner Moench is bright gold with a stable foam crown. You’ll find a full and round body with a mild hop bitterness. It has a smooth finish with a slight touch of honey.

Engel Gold is a bright golden-yellow beer with a strong malt body. It is pleasant, bitter and light, with an underlying sweet touch. These are available at S-Café at Fortune Centre, and will be available in more places soon.

LittLe Known But Fantastic itaLian craFt BeerOne interesting Italian beer showcased was Baladin. It is known for a range of craft beers, which do not use certain mass production processes, with unique characteristics. “Baladin” is a word for

“juggler”, and its bottles come in the shape of a juggling pin.

The Baladin Wayan is made with five different cereals and nine spices, five of which are peppers! These make the Wayan piquant and aromatic. The Super, an amber ale, is one of its first beers and has been described as liquid honey.

Baladin beers are currently available at Da Laura and Garibaldi restaurants. They will be available in more venues in the coming months.

32 Via Dei Birrai also plied its wine bottle-like concoctions ranging from light and easy-drinking ales such as the Tre+Due (“three plus two”) with a fresh flavour, to slow-sippers with more hops such as the Atra with hints of yummy coffee, caramel, chocolate and locust bean.

Most of these and more will be new to market in the coming months. Look out for them!

Pig’s ears & more at MooseheadMoosehead Kitchen-Bar updates its menu with various smoky treats

I’ve wanted to pop by Moosehead Kitchen-Bar since it opened but, with the hodgepodge of restaurants and cafes popping up all over the place, I’ve just been too stretched for time to cover every establishment.

Nevertheless, with the update of Moosehead’s new menu, I finally had the chance (and excuse) to go.

Started by father-son team Glen and Daniel Ballis with Chef Manel Valero, Moosehead’s current menu is decidedly Spanish with Japanese influences. It has a slightly more extensive dinner menu but, if lunch hour is all you can spare, the items on the lunch menu comprise 70 per cent of the full menu for dinner.

Pigs Ears & OctOPusEsMost of the dishes are meant for sharing and go well with the selection of beers and wines that Moosehead offers.

Bacon-lovers would enjoy the Bacon Wrapped Chargrilled Dates ($8) with roast garlic aioli and pine nuts. It’s an odd mishmash of Middle Eastern dates and bacon, with a paste-like texture within and a salty-sweet flavour overall.

My favourite dish though was the Crispy Spiced Pig’s Ears ($16). It is surprisingly crisp, and it was almost like snacking on pork chips. The accompanying lime and house spices, which contained a strong scent of cumin, added to the fragrance and the flavour.

Off-thE-MEnu sPEcialitiEsChef Manel also does items which are not on the

menu, so do make sure to ask the staff about the specials. That day, I was lucky to be able to try his new dish of Charred Baby Octopus ($28) with roasted red capsicum confit and edamame.

The smoky octopuses were marinated in mirin, sake and soy sauce while the roast capsicum confit had a strong taste of balsamic vinegar. It was truly an excellent dish that should be made permanently on the menu, in my opinion.

I also tried the other off-the-menu item of Chargrilled Chicken Bulgogi ($18) with sesame seed horseradish miso and spring onion. It reminded me of Asian stir-fry dishes with tender chicken pieces, which made the dish very easy to eat.

The dessert of was quite creative with Chilli Pineapple Popsicle ($14) with gula Melaka frozen foam, banana and chocolate. Don’t worry; it’s not spicy at all. The Chilli Pineapple Popsicle just has a slight kick at the end but it mostly tastes like a frozen pineapple.

Moosehead Kitchen-Bar certainly does have interesting items that you should try.

Rockin’ brunch at Seasonal Tastes

Westin Singapore’s Seasonal Tastes restaurant offers a Sunday brunch with fresh food and rocking beats

With the return of the Westin brand to Singapore comes a champagne brunch buffet at the hotel restaurant Seasonal Tastes.

Seasonal Tastes champagne brunch buffet, known as The Brunch Beats ($158++), is a sky-high treat on the 32nd floor with DJ Lindo Martinez spinning deep house grooves as you eat.

fOOd and MOrE fOOdThe buffet is smaller than other champagne brunches I’d been to before but I attribute that to the limited space inside Seasonal Tastes. A welcome drink of orange juice and Veuve Clicquot champagne starts you off before you enter the bright and airy restaurant.

Your eyes first settle on the cheese counter and the viennoiserie counter, which is directly opposite, just before the seafood, meat and cooked food. Right in the middle is the sushi and salad bar. I headed straight for the seafood counter.

Did you know that you can request for the staff to peel a plate of fresh prawns for you if you don’t want to get your hands dirty? How spoilt can one get? There are also three different types of oysters from France, Canada and America, as well as lobster and crab on ice.

fat sundayThe cooked food section is a little confusing as it serves a mix of Asian fare such as stir-fried vegetables, as well as some western fare such as moussaka and mashed potatoes. It also has a Thai Style Suckling Pig, but I concede that it is a little hard to pick apart.

The steak counter is where it can get slightly odd. As usual, you get to pick the particular cut of steak you want, with the three common options of sirloin, tenderloin or ribeye, and then you specify your doneness to the chef.

The first time I went, I wanted medium rare and I ended up with rare. The second time I went, incognito, I got it well done instead of medium rare.

The desserts are a mix of local kuehs, a green tea fondue fountain and ice cream. The avocado ice cream is highly recommended. And of course the champagne that just keeps flowing.Westin Singapore, 12 Marina View, Asia Square Tower 2, Singapore 018961, Tel: 6922 6968, Sun, 12pm-3pm

Following a face-lift by Habitat One, this apartment at Mandale Heights is a cosy haven for this family

When the owners of this three-bedroom apartment at Mandale Heights first bought their home, they wanted to freshen it up with a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Upon studying the apartment condition and understanding the homeowners’ requirements, the designer from Habitat One proposed several design ideas that would work with the homeowners’ very specific preferences.

Most significantly, the ten-year-old apartment was in good shape and only needed a few good design gestures for a fresh look.

New AestheticThe designer shares, “The owners wanted a feeling of grandeur at the entrance, so we proposed a chandelier and a strong backdrop in the foyer.”

Here, lighting effect accentuates the irregular lines on the panel that has been spray-painted silver. As you step into the dining area, the sense of sophistication continues. The Habitat One designer had spruced up the space with mirror panels on one wall and elegant furniture in a warm palette of brown hues.

While there wasn’t a need to knock down walls and restructure the layout, the designer saw the benefit of adding a partition to separate the living area from the bedroom entrances. With the partition, the TV can also be placed at a comfortable viewing distance.

stored VAlue As with many homes in Singapore, space was a

challenge in the bedrooms. The designer came up with several solutions to combat the constraints. This included a swivel TV for the master bedroom and slim custom headboards for the other bedrooms.

One of the rooms houses a study area, for which the designer created a compact, wall-mounted desk. Also forgoing cabinets, she fitted a slim shelf along the wall for display items and books. A pull-out bed was chosen for this bedroom, which is used as a guest room.

Although storage cabinets are important in the bathroom, the designer did not go the usual route of mounting the sink on a vanity cabinet. Instead, the bathroom sink is mounted on a marble slab, while storage cabinets are built above the water closet.

The result is a spacious-looking bathroom that, despite its size, provides for ease of movement.

On the whole, despite working mainly with the existing layout, the designer was able to create a much more conducive living space for the family.

Best camping spots around the world

Whether you’re thinking of breathtaking scenery, serene solitude or good ol’ family bonding, no holiday in the city can beat the classic camping trip

Get up close and personal with Mother Nature, curl up in a warm sleeping bag next to a campfire,

peer up at the glittering stars and enjoy a few yummy s’mores.

A camping trip in the arms of Mother Nature can be quite an incomparable experience.

Here are five camping spots around the world that promise to give you an unforgettable holiday experience.

Rhossili Beach Bay, GoweR, UKRhossili Beach was awarded “10th Best Beach in the World” by TripAdvisor in 2013. The vast Jurassic cliffs offer dramatic views best enjoyed from the walking routes. Watch basking seals and dolphins prance in the water.

Surfers benefit from the Atlantic swell, while sandcastle builders would love the fine

golden sand. Do keep a lookout for shipwrecks below the waterline.

Here, parking and public transport are within reach. Rhossili village also has good places to eat and drink.

Pitton Cross Campsite offers good facilities. It is outside Rhossili village and close enough to the action whilst maintaining a tranquil atmosphere.

Emerald Lake. This rich turquoise lake also offers superb walking, paddling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. Stop along the Natural Bridge to admire the Kicking Horse River as it carves a path through ancient rock. This is truly one of the most scenic campsites in the world.

PUlaU UBin, sinGaPoReIn our own backyard, we have a unique and nostalgic island enclave like no other. Pulau Ubin has a rustic air and feel that you can hardly find elsewhere in Singapore, or most parts of the urbanised world. Be transported back into the era when diesel generators were used for electricity.

Mamam Beach and Jelutong Campsite are great places to set up base. To protect the environment, campfires and tying tent lines to the trees or cutting branches are prohibited.

There are still plenty of things you can do, such as bird-watching and bike-riding. Jelutong Campsite also has facilities to accommodate a large campfire, for a night of singing fun and camaraderie, not to mention campfire-cooked food.

Bear in mind that the water here is not suitable for drinking or bathing. Get the breather you need, away from the noise of city life, without having to spend an exorbitant amount to go abroad.

Arrive before sunset when the crowd is smaller to truly appreciate the peaceful setting. Strong swimmers can swim to the shore of the island; or you can get there by a long tail boat or kayak.

Visit the fascinating Mount Rushmore with the enormous sculptures of the visages of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Don’t forget the magnificent carving of Crazy Horse.

Take a trip through Custer State Park, where buffaloes still roam. For an adrenalin ride, experience Sturgis in August, when the world famous Sturgis motorcycle rally is held.

The Black Hills offer in-city RV Parks, luxury camping resorts, forest and lake campgrounds, and back-country camps.

yoho naTional PaRK, canadaYoho is a place of awe and wonder. The park boasts towering rock walls, spectacular waterfalls, glacial lakes and soaring mountain peaks.

Yoho’s craggy peaks and steep rock faces, however pose an enormous challenge for hiking neophytes. Be very safe and get a guide if you need to.

Admire the stunning view of Takkakaw Falls from afar, or feel the spray at the base. It is certainly refreshing. The entrance by the Yoho Valley is accessible now until mid-October, by small vehicles and bicycles only.
