The Leukaemia and Lymphoma Foundation (LLF) will be holding its 3rd annual charity walkathon, “LLF Walkathon”, on Sunday, Jun 1, at Sentosa from 8.30am to 11am.

The walkathon aims to increase awareness of blood cancer and blood disorders in Singapore, and to raise funds for LLF.

Alien Abduction: Moments of mild shockThis is a standard “found-footage” sci-fi movie minus the frills of a star-powered cast and a creative script

A family goes away and becomes hapless earthlings hunted by inquisitive extra-terrestrials.

This seems to be the standard storyline for several sci-fi movies of late, and Alien Abduction’s plot is just as generic as its title.

Strange phenomena unsettle nerves in Alien Abduction

Run-of-the-Mill ScRiptDirector Matty Beckerman follows the abduction nightmare of a family on a camping trip that turns sour. The parents, Peter and Katie (played by Peter Holden and Katherine Sigismund), pay no attention to rumours about the Brown Mountains.

With them on the trip are their three children: Jillian and Corey, and their 11-year-old autistic son, Riley (Riley Polanski). Riley is the trip’s ‘cameraman,’ lugging around his camcorder as a safety blanket. It is Riley who records the entire abduction.

Alien Abduction follows the many found-footage horror movies before it. Of course, one cannot help but think that using ‘real’ movie footage was the producers’ intelligent way of working around film costs and not breaking the small budget.

childiSh cuRioSityPerhaps amateurish at times, the film does have its positives. The use of a child’s innocent curiosity is a brilliant way to explain why one would continue shooting in times of such distress.

Unlike many other films that are similarly shot, this film offers an interesting backstory with the autistic son. Having the camcorder as his only shield from an otherwise frightening world makes sense.

The film should also receive acknowledgement for introducing supporting cast members such as Sean (Jeff Bowser), the world-weary local who adds an interesting flair to this sci-fi horror.

SteReotype Sci-fi Aside from some well-developed characters, Alien Abduction does not offer much to make it stand out. Not only its small budget but its formulaic plot also dooms the film to be just another sci-fi flick with little to be excited about.

Still, avid sci-fi and horror fans can expect a thrilling ride through a ‘safe’ sci-fi storyline.

Here comes the fifth movie of the Spider-Man franchise since 2000 – how different is it?

Here is yet another sequel to the Spider-Man franchise that never seems to end.

Just five years after the release of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, we have yet another movie of the same hero, with the same villain and a similar plot.

heARtthRoB heRoOne could argue that this all-time favourite superhero has a certain ‘novelty’. Spider-Man is a character that many people would want to watch over and over again.

Perhaps it is the electrifying chemistry between Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, or the humorous timing derived from the comics, that gives Marc Webb’s do-over an edge

over his predecessors.Andrew Garfield’s portrayal

of Spider-Man was flawless. He evolves from a shy and socially-awkward teenager, to a hero with a life purpose.

Also noteworthy are the energising dynamics between him and co-star Emma Stone, who plays Parker’s girlfriend. On set, the duo offers the perfect teen heartthrob fairy-tale relationship, which brings

in teenage girls to watch what would otherwise be considered a “boys’ film”.

the flAShy VillAinS Like many Spider-Man films before it, this latest film decided to reintroduce former villains. However, it also has a new one. The hero will have two arch-nemeses to tackle: the Osborn character and Electro, played by Jamie Foxx.

Electro is a flashy character (literally) with electrical powers to torment Spider-Man. Electro is one of the oldest Spider-Man villains, but has been given a makeover in this new incarnation.

Foxx has stated that he was elated at the chance to play the role, and to be part of movie history. He certainly has been highly popular with the fans at various media events around the world.

The Spider-Man franchise has received some criticism for being ‘over-saturated’. Yet, this latest take from Webb offers acrobatic stunts, brilliant comedic influx, and enough tear-jerking romance to make us forget some of the past criticism of the franchise.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may be similar in plot and setting to previous incarnations but, from the looks of it, it is promising enough to offer audiences much action and entertainment.

COnvInCInG STaRSColin Firth may be one of the most talented actors of our time, winning multiple awards for his work and wowing millions with his performance in The King’s Speech. Of course, his co-star Reese Witherspoon has been about as equally successful.

Witherspoon seems to steal the show as she plays the brilliantly-cast role of victim Stevie Branch’s grieving mother. Being from the south herself, Witherspoon appears to be in her comfort zone.

Although some critics have raised concern on the glamorous Witherspoon’s ability to play a humble, southern woman, she has thus far proven herself to be an adept performer. Brought to life by her immense talent, her character alone is reason enough to watch this film.

COuRTROOm dRamaCentral to the film’s drama are the courtroom scenes. Despite the fact that some viewers might already know of the case’s verdict, the film nonetheless fuels high suspense. Egoyan creates a docudrama that brilliantly encompasses the film’s quiet frustration and intrigue.

Anyone who has read about the trial would know that those convicted were in fact innocent. Yet, Egoyan aims to lengthen the painfully-biased judiciary proceeding.

Devil’s Knot takes a trial that spanned many years and cuts it down to two hours of footage. The film does not show the final verdict, but it certainly gives us the anticipation and drama, shedding a new perspective on this renowned case.

This is an interesting storyline but you might find,

like I did, it ends up a dry and confusing two-hour botch. depp’S ROBOTIC aCTInGA talent such as Johnny Depp rarely struggles to shine in a film regardless of his co-stars but, be it because of the role he plays or the lack of make-up he is used to, we see an abysmal performance from him.

Depp plays the role of an

Artificial Intelligence (AI) entity, portraying no emotion. His listless character and lack of charisma in the role could be the reason many found him boring in this film.

I guess you could argue that he played his role as a computer so well that the monotony could be a reflection of his success.

The COnvOLuTed pRemISeEverybody loves a great sci-fi movie about technology taking over the human race; we’ve seen the appeal of technophobia from movies such as I, Robot and Eagle Eye. As complex as those were, this movie takes the cake with the most pointlessly-confusing plot in recent sci-fi films.

While Transcendence has an appealing trailer and intriguing storyline, director Wally Pfister has unfortunately confounded many with a movie full of technical jargon and unnecessary detail. It is a classic case of a great idea being executed poorly and surprisingly so, given the decent cast.

mORGan FReeman, SuppORTInG SupeRSTaR?If you need something to look forward to, Morgan Freeman plays Joseph Tagger, Depp’s supporting friend and co-worker. Freeman has few scenes and few lines but he never fails to deliver in the grandeur of his voice and surprising comedic talent. In fact, it may be reminiscent of the subtle humour of The Shawshank Redemption.

A slow film overall, many will see Transcendence as a let-down, despite all the star power it has. Nonetheless, little sparks of brilliance from Depp and Freeman are highlights.

At the screening I attended, the entire story was probably never understood by the audience.

The Monty Python man opens up

We speak with veteran comedian John Cleese all the way from the Four Seasons in Sydney

When I spoke to veteran British comedian John Cleese over the phone, a few weeks ago, I was star-struck and understandably so. The 74-year-old will be in Singapore in early May for a two-night stand-up act at the University Cultural Centre (UCC) in the National University of Singapore.

Known for shows such as television comedy series “Fawlty Towers” and “Monty Python” as well as the hit movie A Fish Called Wanda, the veteran is darkly hilarious.

What are you expecting from your first shoW in singapore?I haven’t the slightest idea! I don’t know how many expats there would be in the crowd from England or Australia, but I love performing for Asian audiences as they are introverted like me.

In America, they are quite extroverted and they tend to whoop quite a bit, and I don’t really get what that is all about! There are two proper ways to enjoy a joke, you either laugh or clap, if it was really amusing. Introverted audiences are more interesting and they will enjoy the show in their own way.

have you planned What you’re going to say?Yes, I have. It is a very personal autobiography about how I grew up in England that was being bombed by the Germans, to going off to Cambridge and how I got into showbiz. As I get older, I realise how quite a bit of that has something to do with luck. I’m going to show a few clips, the making of a few shows, and I will talk about the real hotel that Fawlty Towers was based on. I will talk about black humour as well and why audiences get offended.

are you surprised that younger audiences knoW you Work?It is very surprising to me

that young kids know me. Of course, they don’t know me from my work from Monty Python, but they know me as King Harold from Shrek or the chimpanzee in George of the Jungle or from the movie Cars.

there are clips of your old shoWs such as “monty python” and “faWlty toWers” on youtube. do you think that helps expose your Work to a neW croWd?Most definitely. In the past, there was the assumption that once someone laughs at a joke, they don’t want to hear the same joke again. But with YouTube, people watch these clips over and

over again like how one would listen to a piece of music. That helps a new audience be familiar with my other work.

We hear that there is going to be a monty python reunion.Yes, in London in July at the O2 Arena. We’ll be doing the Monty Python golden oldies, some new stuff, and old stuff as well. We aren’t going to tour, so we are keeping it at ten shows and after the last show, that will probably be the last time we’ll get together. There’s always the temptation to get the gang back together though!

are there any neW comedians you like?Well, I don’t watch much television. But the comedians that came after me were brilliantly talented, such as Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Rowan Atkinson, you know that bunch. They aren’t new anymore but they are quite a bit younger than me [laughs].

The sad thing about doing comedy for 50 years is that you know most of the jokes and it’s harder to find something delightful these days.

as a comedian, i’m sure you often get asked for a joke. having said that, could you tell us one?Let me ask my wife [turns to mutter to his wife]. All right, a man goes to the doctor, the doctor says, “What’s your problem?” The man replies, “Doctor, I feel like a pair of curtains.” The doctor replies, “Well, pull yourself together!”

Why do women ask their boyfriends to carry their handbags?

Why do Singaporean women ask their boyfriends to carry their handbags for them?

Is it because their handbags are heavy? Are they testing whether their men submit to them? Isn’t it a form of emasculation?

We posed these questions on Quora and we got a few different responses.

suPPort or scoring Points?Tom Willis, an American married to a Singaporean, said that it is an Asian phenomenon. He does it too, without being asked.

Tom said he feels that there needs to be give and take in any relationship. Moreover, helping your partner carry her bag may score you some points.

chivalry not deadJerlyne Ong responded, “In North America, guys hold doors. In Asia, they hold bags.”

“I’ve had guys carry my bags for various reasons, from seeing me struggle with the weight of the bag, to simply being courteous. This is not restricted to only boyfriends. Male friends in secondary school did that too, [‘Come la, your bag look so heavy; I carry for you.’] ” she said.

“I’ve also had guys insist on carrying my bag, to the point where they try to yank it off my shoulder. So, no, there is no territory-marking or submission involved,” she added.

Still, she admits that she does know

of one friend who does that to her boyfriend “for the wrong reasons”.

Jerlyne’s parting shot: “If carrying a handbag emasculates you and somehow makes you less of a man, perhaps you should worry about that more than a small, simple bag.”

Another person named Ying Ying commented, “But that happens to [sic] dependent girls only. An independent girl will never let or ask her boyfriend to do so.”

other vieWsAnother person had posted similar questions: What is the story behind the common practice in Singapore of guys carrying their female partners’ handbags? How long has it been going? How did it get started? Is it unique to Singapore?

Bo Fiona Ren responded, “I think allowing your boyfriend to carry your bag is really an expression of trust and co-dependence. Growing up in a Chinese family instilled in me that good guys will ‘take care of / care for you’. (Duh, they should regardless of Western or Eastern culture.)”

“For me, admitting that my bag is too heavy, uncomfortable, hurting my back, is a big step in my nouveau-feminist Asian-American mind because it’s an admission of help. Admitting that you can’t do it all to someone else builds trust,” she said.

She added, “I would also like to point that out that bag carrying is a privileged permission you give to someone special. I would never just let any of my guy friends help me carry my bags even if it’s a 20-pounder hiking up the mountain.”

Joses Ho, whose profile states that he is born and bred in Singapore and has served National Service, said, “But girls wouldn’t freely let their partners carry their handbags unless they found it uncomfortable.”

“So the real question is, why do Singaporean females find their handbags too heavy? Is it the humid tropical climate? Or is it because there’s just too much in the handbag for the poor girl to shoulder?” he asked.

Feast like royalty at Pind Balluchi

With inITALY, you don’t have to travel thereinITALY Bar Ristorante’s new menu offers new seasonal items to delight your taste buds

I consider inITALY Bar Ristorante to be one of my favourite Italian restaurants. It does not serve the typical pasta carbonara or pasta aglio olio but the lesser known, yet more delicious Italian dishes.

Chef Mario Caramella makes a concerted effort to serve his own unique take on Italian food and it was evident in the choices on the menu.

SeaSonal ItalIan DelIcacIeSThe Italian White Asparagus is in season until June and I was lucky enough to try one of the dishes with it. The White Asparagus alla Milanese with Fried Egg and Butter ($24) is an acquired taste but the asparagus was fragrant and crisp.

I liked the Burrata ($28-$45). The creamy

buffalo milk burrata cheese came with Parma ham, heirloom tomatoes and capsicum chutney, an excellent and slightly rich start to the meal. The Chilled Spaghettini ($32) with shrimp, tomatoes and fish roe is also good for sharing.

Much More than PaStaThe Ravioli di Ossobuco in Gremolata ($28) is not to be missed. The homemade ravioli is stuffed with veal, cooked in a saffron sauce and flavoured with chopped lemon rind, parsley and garlic. But the piece de resistance is definitely the Smoked Eel Risotto ($32).

The risotto comes in a pretty shade of purple. Yes, purple. The risotto is flavoured with beetroot and red berries.

The red berries mask the earthy scent of the beetroot and are accompanied with the smoky taste of the meaty eel. This is one dish you won’t forget.

The Saltimbocca di Pollo ($30), a roasted chicken thigh wrapped in Parma ham cooked in white wine sauce, sage and with a side of polenta, is a good option to if you don’t feel like having anything too carb-heavy.

Sweet enDIngSFor dessert, I recommend the Cannolo Aperto ($16). Sheep’s milk ricotta cheese mousse, Sicilian candied fruit, crispy cannolo biscuits and pistachio ice cream forms this pretty, layered dessert that requires smashing apart in order to consume correctly. What fun!

If you have a bit more time on your hands, order the Rosolio Souffle ($20). It takes up to 20 minutes to prepare but if you like roses, you will enjoy this Venetian rose liqueur soufflé.

Fine dining establishment serves authentic Punjabi cuisine

All the way from India comes Pind Balluchi Bar & Grill sharing Punjabi recipes from the Indian royal ancestry books.

Opened for four months in Clarke Quay, Pind Balluchi makes you feel like a maharajah or maharani feasting on dishes, some of which are meant only for royalty back then. In general, I am not a fan of Indian food as I have trouble digesting most of it.

However, the food at Pind Balluchi was surprisingly light, in comparison to our local Indian eateries.

Sweet SurrenDerApart from the dishes mentioned, Pind Balluchi also has common dishes such as Prawn Masala ($29) and Dal Makhini ($19), black lentils cooked in Punjabi style. The naan and roti are also not to be missed.

The Garlic Naan ($6) is fragrant and fluffy and the Peshawari Naan ($8) is surprisingly good as it is made with saffron, sweetened refined flour and clarified butter and stuffed with nuts. If you are a fan of Indian desserts, you’re in for a treat.

As usual, Indian desserts run on the sweet side so you may want to share. The Gulab Jamun ($12), a golden fried cottage cheese ball steeped in rose-scented syrup is a sinful delight. We recommend either only eating that or sharing it.

The Mango Phirni ($14) is a safer bet should you not want something so saccharine. The fresh Alphonso mango and date puree is cooked with powdered rice and topped with Iranian pistachios - a much lighter and refreshing dessert to end the meal.

DIne lIke a kIngLamb or mutton is normally thought to smell rank and can be quite tough but not the Galouti Kebab ($24), a closely-guarded recipe with 136 spices. These soft lamb patties are minced 32 times by hand! The meat is pounded into a soft mush that melts in the mouth. Simply delectable, and coming from someone who doesn’t like gamey meats, this is a tall order.

I also liked the Bhatti Chicken ($21), a delicacy meant for royal guests in Nabha, Punjab. The tender chicken has a distinct taste of peppercorns and assorted spices as the chicken has been marinated overnight and then grilled in a tandoor.

But my favourite dish was definitely the Tandoori Broccoli ($14).

How can a broccoli be tandoori, you ask? Well, the skewered broccoli is marinated in yoghurt, Kashmiri chilli and royal caraway before being cooked in a tandoor, resulting in a fragrant and smoky vegetable. Even the fussiest vegetable eaters will enjoy it!

Vodka is often overlooked as a neutral spirit but, like wine, it does have its own flavour profile too

I’ve had one too many experience with a bad house pour, as the quality of the vodka was quite terrible.

This gave me the impression that vodka always needs to be diluted in order to be drinkable. However, I am glad to say, after proper exposure and learning from industry experts, I have since changed my mind.

Per Hermansson, Director of Sensory Strategy and Master Blender from The Absolut Company, created “A Taste of Perfection”, a class that teaches vodka appreciation techniques.

Hermansson’s methods break down the flavour profiles into neutral, grainy, bready, fruity and solvent, the last being the worst. He also teaches you to check the viscosity of the vodka by swirling it within the glass, which will result in either a clean or oily coating of the tongue.

Joe Petch, brand ambassador for Reyka Vodka in the United Kingdom, says, “Vodka has its own flavour profile like any spirit. It is simply more subtle and delicate than other categories such as whisky or rum.”

should vodka Be drunk neat?Neutral-tasting vodkas are more suited to be taken shots or neat as they have a subtle rounded flavour that is easier to drink. However, vodka with a stronger flavour profile might be better in a cocktail in order to bring out the flavours more.

Petch says, “Like any quality or super premium spirit, it is great to taste it on its own and really appreciate it. However, adding subtle flavours that do not completely overpower the individual flavour profile, such as some light bitters, can indeed compliment the vodka and create a completely different experience.”

daily BrunCh MenuI like the fact that The Missing Pan has a brunch menu every day, adding to the laid-back upper crust vibe that assumes there’s always time to spare for brunch.

I loved the Beetroot Quinoa Salad ($12++), a slightly sweet and tangy quinoa salad with candied beetroot, arugula and herb flatbread strips. The beetroot did not have an earthy scent which made this salad refreshing.

The Rosemary Rosti Stack ($16++) doesn’t score any points for being healthy but I must say that the portions at The Missing Pan are very big and can be shared. The rosti stack comes with bacon and two sunny-side-up eggs, tomatoes and a side of grilled zucchini salad.

I was quite disappointed with the 62 Degree Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon ($22++). It seemed to me like a soft-boiled egg atop toast with a side of cooked house-smoked salmon with aburi Hollandaise sauce. The point is: I like my eggs benny poached with vinegar. If I had wanted soft-boiled eggs, I would have gone to Ya Kun!

elaBorate reCipesI got the distinct vibe that the chefs at The Missing Pan are trying very hard to impress with their innovation, and that resulted in certain dishes being over the top, such as the French Toast Salpicon ($19++), a sweet and savoury combination of chicken, spinach and mushroom stuffed in French toast, banana nuggets, mixed berries, and homemade strawberry-smoked maple syrup.

I did like the sweet portion of this meal but the savoury within sent my taste buds in a whirl. However, it is still not a bad take on the French toast.

The Kids Menu items aren’t kid-sized at all, as the portions can feed one adult. The Roast Chicken Ciabatta ($12++) with apple and raisin slaw came with a side of French fries.

The eatery has a separate menu for dinner, and serves homemade milkshakes and a selection of craft beer.

Dabbling with textures and proportions, the interior designer has rendered a spacious yet cosy ambience to this HDB flat

When interior design outfit Artistroom took on this project at

Park Central in Ang Mo Kio, one of the first things the team noticed was the cumbersome layout of the 4-room HDB unit. In fact, the designers realised that the home looked much smaller than its 1,000-sq ft floor area.

This was mainly because of the awkward positioning of the main door; it opened into a short corridor before leading into the living area.

Change agentThe kitchen sat on the other side of the wall along that corridor, so designer Katy Chong proposed to hack away the kitchen walls in an effort to encourage visual flow. She also moved the kitchen

entrance to face the main entrance, cleverly allowing for space to accommodate a hidden shoe cabinet.

The apartment is home to a couple who needed only a single bedroom. Understanding the importance of space, Katy proposed to combine the two bedrooms into one. This allowed her to incorporate a large workstation in the bedroom.

Windows line the walls around this bedroom, enhancing a sense of space in the sleeping quarters.

Material World Following the renovations, the kitchen sink and undercabinets sit at the former entrance of the kitchen. A low wall of hollow blocks – common construction material – and clear glass panel serve as a partial partition between the kitchen and the adjacent dining room.

Also, instead of smoothing over the rough textures of the hollow blocks, Katy painted

them white so that the texture remains visible.

“Given the space constraint, we wanted to retain the texture. That way, the apartment doesn’t look like a box with four walls,” Katy explained. That is also the reason behind the use of stone veneers on the main wall in the living area.

Katy also highlighted the unique height of the dining table. “It’s a bar counter, and thus should be a little higher,” she pointed out. “We wanted to have clean profiles and elevated furniture so that the home would appear spacious.”

neat and PraCtiCalIn the bedroom, Katy proposed a slightly uncommon way of placing the furniture; instead of pushing them up against the walls, she positioned them in the centre of the room.

Neatness is crucial in such a layout, so Katy had to ensure that the wires are kept from view. She also customised the bed and workstation to

“Instead of wall-mounted glass or wire racks, having the niches in the walls makes it easier to keep the bathroom clean. There’s no need to worry about fixtures getting rusty or worn out,” she shared.

Katy’s clever choice of materials has given this apartment a new lease of life. And, together with the interplay of textures and proportions, it apparently looks bigger, brighter and bolder.

You may be surprised that one of the most exquisite and expensive coffees in the world comes out of a civet cat’s bum

Kopi luwak (luwak coffee) is created when coffee cherries are eaten by the palm civet cat, known as musang luwak.

The animal excretes the indigestible coffee beans, which are then collected and processed for consumption. This coffee is known as kopi luwak.

Kopi luwak is expensive and much sought after by coffee connoisseurs. It even took a starring role in the movie The Bucket List, in which the protagonists needed to have a sip before they kicked the bucket.

Fifty grams of roasted luwak coffee beans costs about

S$100. Some cafes sell a cup of brewed luwak coffee for $80. If it’s not expensive, it’s not the real thing.

The luwak coffee has an intense aroma and distinct flavour that rivals the best Sumatran single-origin coffee. What makes it so good is that the palm civet cat eats only the best and ripest coffee cherries. Its digestive tract then imparts enzymes and reactions to further process the beans while softening their acidity content, thus imparting wonderful flavours.

Kopi luwak is a name for any bean collected from the excrement of palm civet cats; hence the taste may vary with the type and origin of beans ingested, processing subsequent to collection, roasting, aging and brewing.

Sumatra Coffee CountryYou’ll learn a lot more in Sumatra coffee country. There, you’ll also get to enjoy some adventure, the stunning volcanic landscapes and see how the locals live and cultivate coffee.

Sumatra nestles astride the Straits of Malacca, long fought over by a variety of colonial powers including the Dutch, British, Japanese and Chinese for its rich hinterland, spices and coffee. Ethnic peoples in this region include the Batak with their own language, ceremonies and traditions.

Visit the Batak houses with their distinctive pointy roofs. These houses are on stilts so that the families’ animals such as pigs and buffaloes can live underneath. You can also explore the ancient graves of Batak kings, and enjoy traditional dance performances and beautiful arts and crafts.

The coffee plantations vary in size, from those belonging to business conglomerates to small cottage industries and family-run enterprises.

For the kopi luwak tours and plantations, make sure you choose those where the coffee is collected from the ground droppings of wild palm civet cats and not the caged animals.

the running of the bulls, which takes place at 8am from July 7 and lasts a week, amidst other folklore and traditional events.

Heritage & originSSanfermines is held in honour of Saint Fermin, a patron saint of the province of Navarra. Its events had been captured by Ernest Hemingway’s stories.

The famous writer was fascinated by the whole spectacle of Sanfermines and Pamplona itself. The town shares much of its heritage with neighbouring France and boasts historic landmarks, stunning mountain scenery, good food

and a spontaneous lifestyle. How the running of the

bulls began is shrouded in mystery. Some say that as the bulls were being led from their pen into the bullring for the evening’s fights, a bunch of mischievous boys decided to run in front of the bulls and make fun of them. Somehow, their daring act was celebrated and became part of festivity.

tHe running of tHe BuLLSA designated stretch of street about 825m long is cordoned off and barricaded for the run. To take part you must be at least 18 years old, and you must run in the same direction as the bulls, not incite the bulls, and not be under the influence of alcohol.

Dress yourself in the traditional white shirt and white pants, with red waistband and scarf, and wait at the start line with the rest of the participants for the rockets to fire off. While waiting, a benediction is sung three times in Spanish and Basque.

Six bulls are let loose, along

with steers and oxen, and the run begins in earnest. Wild scenes of chaos, fun, stampedes, and people running for their lives unfold: panic, stumbling, tripping and desperate scaling of balconies and street lights can be seen.

Last year, six people were gored but lived to tell their tale. Another 50 people were taken to hospital for various other injuries. Since record-keeping began in 1910, 15 people have been killed.

The run concludes with the bulls being corralled into the bull ring. The final rocket is then sounded, ending the most frightening thing you would’ve done in your entire life.

Seville is surprisingly charming in every way. The architecture is spectacular, the place is rich in history, and the people, food and pace of life made me feel I could spend forever wandering around getting lost and I would be happy.

Here are the next three jaw-dropping sights not to be missed.

pLaZa de toros de La reaL MaestranZa de CaBaLLeriaI have never attended a bullfight and probably wouldn’t be able to bring myself to but I wanted to see what a bullfighting ring would look like, and Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, the bullring of Seville, was the perfect place to see.

The bullring is a stunning piece of baroque architecture and is one of the finest in Spain. What’s really interesting is the guided tour of the ring and the museum, complete with costumes and statues of matadors.

Keep an open mind, and you’ll leave with an understanding about why some Spaniards are so wildly passionate about bullfighting. The bullfighting season runs from April to October, on Sundays.

pLaZa de espanaYou might recognise Plaza de Espana (Spain Square or Plaza in English) from Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, where it was used as a set for the royal planet of Naboo.

Plaza de Espana was built for a Spanish-American exhibition held in Seville in 1929. I couldn’t believe that they would build something so permanent or so elaborate for an exhibition (but that’s exactly how the Eiffel Tower also came to be).

the building. They’re colourful, intricate and represent the provinces of Spain.

MetropoL parasoLI caught a glimpse of this ultra-modern spaceship-like

building from a taxi ride and it looked so amazing, I knew I had to track it down.

Built on the site of Roman ruins, this is the largest wooden structure in the world and, close up, it looks like a cross between a mushroom and a waffle!

The Metropol Parasol houses a museum underground, with a couple of restaurants and bars. The rooftop promenade offers great views of the city.Seville is a bridge between history and modernity.
