What AVID is … REALLY !AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an academic, regularly scheduled, four-year elective class based on reading, writing and critical thinking as tools of learning. Students must apply and be accepted in to the program.

The AVID classroom is a learning environment, where the focus is constantly set to providing students the tools necessary to be successful in college and beyond.

Today’s college student needs to have the skills to lookat problem-solving, they need to know how to write academically and how to stay focused and organized. In AVID, we do that by holding students to high academic and attendance standards.

AVID students are expected to push themselves, to work hard every day, to turn work in on time and to offer back to the community through community service.

AVID is a partnership – between school, student and home! Our East High motto is “Teamwork makes the dream work.” We are all in this together. If college is your child’s dream and they will be the first generation to go to college, then AVID is just where they should be.

The Nine Truths of Parental InvolvementBy John H. Wherrer, Ed.D., PresidentThe Parent InstituteNine Truths You Must Know Now” published by the Parent Institute.® This article offers practical information on how parents can help their children to succeed. I hope you enjoy and find it beneficial. ….. Mrs. P.Truth # 1Parent involvement is all about the children. It’s important to be clear about the purpose of parent involvement. Parent involvement is NOT about:» Keeping parents happy or out of the teacher’s hair.» Tapping parent expertise.» Getting volunteer help—or field trip chaperones.» Fundraising. It is all about making sure that children get the best education possible. Dr. Joyce Epstein at the Johns Hopkins University Center on School, Family and Community Partnerships makes the point very well when she says:“The way schools care about children is reflected in the way schools care about the children’s families. If educators view children simply as students, they are likely to see the family as separate from the school. That is, the family is expected to do its job and leave the education of children to the schools. If educators view students as children, they are likely to see both the family and the community as partners with the school in children's education and development.”Our schools alone cannot provide the complete education children must have. Parent involvement is all about the children and making sure they receive the kind of education they deserve and must have.

AVID December Family Night was a HUGE success, with over 125 people in attendance. Speakers from University Neighborhood Partners, University of Utah, Utah State, as well as financial aid specialists, college advisors, counselors, and East High AVID

teachers came together to work towards making college dreams, college realities! Next family night will be in March, 2014 with a

focus on funding college and FAFSA!

SeniorsAVID seniors have been getting their admittance letters! Many students have chosen in-state schools, including Weber, Utah State and the University of Utah and Salt Lake Community College. Some will be heading off to serve on an LDS Mission before beginning their college dreams.

This year’s AVID graduating class will consist of 16 students. Their plans are to become engineers, doctors, lawyers, work in business, film and modeling. Our annual SENIOR CELEBRATION will be held May 15, 2014 at Innovations (on SLCC State Street Campus). Details to come!

AVID tutorials are designed to give the AVID student the extra help they need in their rigorous courses. Through tutorials, students develop the skills necessary to become self-directed learners. Tutorial questions should be coming from homework in Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies.

“Today AVID is widely regarded as one of the most effective educational reforms ever created by a classroom teacher. The results have been extraordinary.”
