3rd Grade Egyptian Cartouche
Overview: You will be creating your own Egyptian cartouche design using Ancient Egyptian symbols called hieroglyphs
Estimated Time: 25 minutes or more, if you like
Materials Needed: Paper, pencil, eraser, any coloring tools you have which include but are not limited to crayons, colored pencils, markers
Idea Examples: Look at the cartouche examples and then look closely at the chart of Heiroglyphs. Notice that there is more than one symbol for some alphabet letters. If they are in your name, you have a choice! Follow the directions below. Make sure you draw them big so you can add the details and color them.
Hieroglyphics are symbols, or picture writing, known to have been created by the Ancient
Egyptians. These writings were carved into stone and or painting on papyrus, to record important information about their Pharaohs and Queens, as well as their history. Hieroglyphics are positioned vertically, or top to bottom.
Directions: Write your first name vertically using the Hieroglyphics alphabet within the cartouche
templates below. For an extra challenge, create an additional cartouche that represents your last name. Color your hieroglyphics using colored
pencils, crayon, or markers. Have fun!
A cartouche is a name plate. It is usually oval with a name written in the middle of it. A cartouche is attached to a pharaohs coffin. The ancient Egyptians wanted to make sure that their two souls - the Ba and the Ka - could find their way back to their tomb at night, after they died. No one wanted their Ba or Ka to get lost.A cartouche made it very easy for a Ba and Ka to find their way home.
