Ask the usual questions before starting – Where are the children? How many can you see? What is each child doing? Can you spot any letters you know?

Questions after reading: What time of the day is it? Do you remember any of the children’s names? What does Yamal eat? Why does he eat them quickly? What is a yo-yo? Do you have one? What is Yasmin eating, who gave it to her? What day did she go shopping? Why did she choose the banana yoghurt? How does Ron describe the yoghurt?

Formation for /y/

Show them how to form /y/ on a page. Get them to form it in all the multisensory ways we spoke about before – fingers in the air, on their palms, on your back, on the table, in sand, in flour, in the clay, with playdoh or various food items, etc. (I would love to see pictures of letter formations done in this way if you can)

When you are confident they are able to form /y/, let them write in on a page. Get them to think of words beginning with /y/ and to put the words into sentences.

Count to 10 – forwards and backwards. Now, you do the counting and leave out one or two numbers. See if your child can tell which ones you’ve missed.

Number line – Show children a number line with numbers 0 – 10. Ask them to count forwards and backwards looking at it. Next, draw out another number line but leave out some numbers. See if they can write in the missing numbers. Do this a few times changing the missing numbers.

Aural Activity – Marbles/Stones in the jar. Tell children to close their eyes while you drop stones/marbles in the jar (up to 9). See if they can get it right each time (without trying to peek). Empty out the marbles each time and count them.

Formation of number 10.

Multisensory ways of forming 10. Now get your child to practise writing 10 on paper. You may need to trace first. They will use the
