ReadingsIsaiah 9.2, 6-7The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us;authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is namedWonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peacefor the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold itwith justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. For the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God

Gospel ReadingHear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

All Glory to you, O Lord.Luke 2.1-20

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours! When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Talk

The CreedAll We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is,seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one being with the Father;through him all things were made. For us and our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin

Maryand was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and

the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of

sins.

Taking of the Bread and WineOffertory Carol It came upon the midnight clear

1. It came upon the midnight clear,That glorious song of old,From angels bending near the earth

9

Page 10: surlingham.files.wordpress.com · Web viewMIDNIGHT MASS Christmas Eve 11.30pm via Zoom Live from The Rectory Barn Rockland St Mary The Gathering The Greeting Words of welcome and

To touch their harps of gold:‘Peace on the earth, good-will to men,From heav’n’s all-gracious King!’The world in solemn stillness layTo hear the angels sing.

2. Still through the cloven skies they come,With peaceful wings unfurled; And still their heav’nly music floatsO’er all the weary world;Above its sad and lowly plainsThey bend on hov’ring wing; And ever o’er its Babel soundsThe blessed angels sing.

3. Yet with the woes of sin and strifeThe world has suffered long,Beneath the angel-strain have rolledTwo thousand years of wrong; And man, at war with man, hears notThe love- song which they bring;O hush the noise, ye men of strife,And hear the angels sing!

4. For lo! the days are hastening on,By prophet- bards foretold,When, with the ever-circling years,Comes round the age of gold:When peace shall over all the earthIts ancient splendour fling,And the whole world give back the songWhich now the angels sing.Jesus, Word made flesh, life of the world,in your coming you embraced our poverty:by your Spirit may we share your riches.

All Blessed be God for ever.

The Eucharistic PrayerPresident The Lord is here. All His Spirit is with us.President Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them to the Lord.President Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give thanks and praise.President All honour and glory be yours,

mighty creator, ever-living God.We give you thanks and praise for your Son,Our Saviour Jesus Christ, who for love of our fallen race humbled himself, was born of the Virgin Mother by the power of your Spirit, and lived as one of us.In this mystery of the Word made flesh you have caused his light to shine in our hearts,to give knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ. In him we see our God made visibleand so are caught up in the love of the God we cannot see. Therefore with all the angels of heaven we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name, and sing our joyful hymn of praise:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord,God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

President We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord;and as we obey his commands, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpouredmay be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.On the night before he died he had supper with his disciplesand, taking bread, he praised you.He broke the bread, gave it to them and said:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.Again he praised you, gave it to them and said:

11

Drink this, all of you;this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So Father, we remember all that Jesus did,his death once for all upon the cross, his resurrection from the dead, and his ascension into heaven.Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation,we proclaim his death and resurrectionuntil he comes in glory.Great is the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died:Christ is risen:Christ will come again.

Lord of all life, help us to work together for that daywhen your kingdom comesand justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth.

Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving armsand bring us with Mary, Joseph and all the saintsto feast at your table in heaven.Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christin the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever.
