Tips:

Skin: Use a base that is

close to the dancer’s skin color.

Blend in and cover lightly with

a translucent face powder (not

required for small children).

Eye Liner: Select a navy-

blue, brown or gray. Avoid

making thick lines, but just

enough to accentuate the eye.

Eye Shadow: Layer your

shadows. Begin with a neutral

base before adding in

additional colors: light brown,

blue or gray to highlight the

eyes. Additionally, fill in the

eyebrows if they are light in

color.

Mascara: If you have a

curler, curl the lashes and apply

2 coats of mascara.

Blush: Light red or pink

rouge work well to highlight the

cheekbones. Blend the edges

and use enough to make the

cheeks rosy!

Lips: Lips are very

important! Use a light red or

pink lipstick to define the lips

and enough so the lips stand

out!

Dancing with the feet is one thing, but dancing with the heart is another.

20

Relation"ip to # Working Space and Sta$

It is important for dancers to know where they are in space especially when preparing to go on stage.

Center Stage: This term defines the center point of the stage or room in which you are dancing.

Stage Right: The area of the stage to the right of center stage when facing the audience.

Stage Left: The area of the stage to the left of center stage when facing the audience.

Downstage: Towards, at, or on the front part of the stage when facing the audience.

Upstage: The rear part of the stage, away from the audience.

March

Body Shapes and Rhy&m

Page 22: Rockland School of Ballet

22

Body Shapes and Rhy&m

Body Shapes: A dancer’s body can make many different shapes. Dance is

created as these shapes move through space.

Shapes can be: Straight Curved or somewhere in between

Dancers can also make their body shapes symmetrical and asymmetrical using the midline of the body; matching and contrasting each side of the body.

Rhythm(n): The patterned, recurring alternations of contrasting elements of sound or speech.

Understanding musical rhythm is important for dancers as it helps us understand movement. When it comes to choreography, understanding the beats and rhythms of the song will help dancers piece together steps and dance gracefully across the stage.

Xara Sunne

Rockland Ballet

Miss Xara Sunne began dancing at the age

of 5. From the very beginning, Xara

demonstrated skill, effortless technique and

graceful ability as a dancer.

As she grew up Xara danced many styles

including ballet, pointe, creative movement,

tap, jazz, contemporary, and modern. Finding

her niche in ballet and contemporary classes at

Rockland School of Ballet. Xara eagerly

participates pushing herself to be stronger and

work harder. She has taken to heart specific

goals set before her in contemporary class and

works tirelessly to meet them before the end of

each month.

In the past couple of years Xara’s

technique, strength, talent, grace, and beauty

have grown tremendously. And in the last few

months her body/mind connection and her

artistic expression have soared, rounding out

her artistry even more.

Rockland School of Ballet, Miss Emily and

Miss Jessica are so thrilled to have Xara as a

student. She is someone who continuously sets

an example of what it means to have

wonderful technique and beautiful artistry.

Thank you, Xara, for gracing us with your

presence. Always keep dancing!

WORDS OF THE MONTH

February

29

Petit Ba'ement

Petit Battement(n): (puh-TEE bat MAHN) Small battement. This is another term for a battement tendu. It is also a term for any small beating action of the foot or leg.

Page 30: Rockland School of Ballet

30

Dévelo(é

Développé (n): (dayv-law-PAY) Time developed, developing movement. A Développé is a movement in which the working leg is drawn up to the knee of the supporting leg and slowly extended to an open position en l’air and held there with perfect control. The hips are kept level and square to the direction in which the dancer is facing.

Développés are performed a la quatrieme devant, a la seconde and a la quatrieme derriere and may be executed in all directions of the body. They are done with the supporting foot flat on the ground, on demi pointe, full point or en fondu.

In the Cecchetti method the working foot is brought up to the retiré position with the toe pointed at the side of the knee before extending the leg in the required direction.

In the Russian and French schools, the pointed toe is brought to retiré devant before extending the leg forward or to retiré derriere before extending the leg backward. When performing the développé to second position the front foot is brought to retiré devant and then extended, or the back foot is brought to retiré derriere and then extended.

Page 31: Rockland School of Ballet

31

Relevé Lent

Relevé Lent: (ruhlVAY lahn); A slow rising.

Battement Relevé Lent: From the fifth position slide the foot to pointe tendu to either fourth or second position and slowly raise the outstretched leg with strongly pointed toes to 45 or 90 degrees or higher. Slowly lower the leg to pointe tendu and close it to the fifth position. Battement relevé lent may be done in all directions.

Page 32: Rockland School of Ballet

32

Relevé

Relevé: (ruhl-VAY) Raised.

A raising of the body on the points or demi points. There are two ways to relevé. In the French School, relevé is done with a smooth, continuous rise while the Cecchetti method and Russian school use a little spring. Relevé may be done in first, second, fourth or fifth position, en attitude arriere and so on.

Occasionally the term may refer to a lowering of the working foot from a position pointe tendu to the ground and re-raising it to the position pointe tendu, as in battement tendu relevé.

In the Russian school the term relevé is also used to mean the slow raising of the stretched leg to 90* in any direction.
