Keep Thieves Out of Your Vehicle

Page 5: phillipswest.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web view16/09/2016  · Targeted Enforcement Area in Midtown. Lake Street (29th St E to 32nd St E, 35 W to 16th Ave S-note slightly modified

The 3rd Precinct is seeing an increase in theft from motor vehicles. During the week of September 13th to September 21st, there were 28 cars that were entered and items were taken.   In eight of the thefts, a purse, wallet or backpack was taken.  The suspect(s) gained entry through an unlocked door in seven of the incidents and there was no force evident in thirteen other cases. Six incidents involved the breaking of a window. Here are some things you can do:

Keep as few valuables as possible in your vehicle. Leave things you don’t need at home.

Store valuables that you have to carry in your trunk or out of sight before reaching your destination.

If you have a GPS device mounted with a suction cup, remove the device and the cup and clean the windshield. Thieves will often assume that a windshield with a suction cup or suction cup ring indicates that a GPS device is stored inside the vehicle.

Park in a well-lit area whenever possible. Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the

vehicle. The Minneapolis Police Department needs your help in stopping theft:

Call 911 if you see suspicious behavior in or near a vehicle. Be ready to give your location and describe the vehicle, people and behavior involved.

Call 311 (or 612-673-3000) if someone has damaged or stolen things from your vehicle. Reporting is important because it helps the police department determine crime patterns.

If you are already practicing these crime prevention tips, the Minneapolis Police Department thanks you.
