“What Is Divinity”

What is divinity if it can come

Only in silent shadows and in dreams?

Shall she not find in comforts of the sun,

In pungent fruit and bright green wings, or else

In any balm or beauty of the earth,

Things to be cherished like the thought of heaven?

Divinity must live within herself;

Passions of rain, or moods in falling snow;

Grievings in loneliness, or unsubdued

Elations when forest blooms; gusty

Emotions on wet roads on autumn nights;

All pleasures and all pains, remembering

The bough of summer and the winter branch,

These are the measures destined for her soul.

Wallace Stevens (1879-1955)

Fr. Hugh, OP

CYO Service Projects Update!

The 5th grade girls CYO Team hosted a Bake Sale and raised an astounding $610 for the Panther Pioneer League. The proceeds will be used to purchase some much needed new equipment for the Panther Pioneer League which is a special needs athletic club for Pleasantville High School students. The goal of the club is to provide opportunities for special needs students to compete in a variety of interscholastic sports just like their peers. These activities encourage self-confidence, problem solving and team-building skills while promoting positive self-image and a healthy life style. These skills apply to the sports field, the community and the classroom. This is the first year the club has been available for Pleasantville High School students. The students have been attending weekly practices and games as well as devoting time at home to build their skills. The CYO girls also attended the first ever Pioneer Homecoming, where they were able to meet the students and cheer them on as they competed.

Coaches: Sabol & Raefski Team Parents: Boes & Sullivan

A Mass sponsored by The Westchester Foundation for Autism

10 Things to Remember for Lent

1. Remember the formula. The Church does a good job capturing certain truths with easy-to-remember lists and formulas: 10 Commandments, 7 sacraments, 3 persons in the Trinity. For Lent, the Church gives us almost a slogan—Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving—as the three things we need to work on during the season. 2. It’s a time of prayer. Lent is essentially an act of prayer spread out over 40 days. As we pray, we go on a journey, one that hopefully brings us closer to Christ and leaves us changed by the encounter with him. 3. It’s a time to fast. With the fasts of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, meatless Fridays, and our personal disciplines interspersed, Lent is the only time many Catholics these days actually fast. And maybe that’s why it gets all the attention. Fasting is actually a form of penance, which helps us turn away from sin and toward Christ. 4. It’s a time to work on discipline. The 40 days of Lent are also a good, set time to work on personal discipline in general. Instead of giving something up, it can be doing something positive. 5. It’s about dying to yourself. The more serious side of Lenten discipline is that it’s about more than self-control – it’s about finding aspects of yourself that are less than Christ-like and letting them die. The suffering and death of Christ are foremost on our minds during Lent, and we join in these mysteries by suffering, dying with Christ and being resurrected in a purified form. 6. Don’t do too much. It’s tempting to make Lent some ambitious period of personal reinvention, but it’s best to keep it simple and focused. There’s a reason the Church works on these mysteries year after year. We spend our entire lives growing closer to God. Don’t try to cram it all in one Lent. That’s a recipe for failure. 7. Lent reminds us of our weakness. Of course, even when we set simple goals for ourselves during Lent, we still have trouble keeping them. Lent shows us our weakness. This can be painful, but recognizing how helpless we are makes us seek God’s help with renewed urgency and sincerity. 8. Be patient with yourself. When we’re confronted with our own weakness during Lent, the temptation is to get angry and frustrated. But that’s the wrong lesson. God is calling us to be patient and to see ourselves as he does, with unconditional love. 9. Reach out in charity. As we experience weakness and suffering during Lent, we should be renewed in our compassion for those who are hungry, suffering or otherwise in need. The third part of the Lenten formula is almsgiving. It’s about more than throwing a few extra dollars in the collection plate; it’s about reaching out to others and helping them without question as a way of sharing the experience of God’s unconditional love. 10. Learn to love like Christ. Giving of ourselves in the midst of our suffering and self-denial brings us closer to loving like Christ, who suffered and poured himself out unconditionally on cross for all of us. Lent is a journey through the desert to the foot of the cross on Good Friday, as we seek him out, ask his help, join in his suffering, and learn to love like him. Bishop David L. Ricken

People, Look East: The History and Traditions of the Eastern Catholic Churches

Explanatory: Few people know that the Catholic Church is actually a family of 23 churches in full communion with one another, and united in faith and charity with the pope. While the Roman Catholic Church is by far the largest of these communities of faith, Eastern Catholics make up smaller but by no means any less ancient or Catholic churches, with their own historic rites, liturgies and cultures that date to the time of the apostles.

Guest Speaker: Deacon Greg Kandra

For the season of Lent we have chosen the Heritage Mass by Owen Alstott as our Mass setting. This setting has been in use since 1978, and was one of those revised in 2010 with the changes to the Roman missal. It is one of the most familiar melodies and the most ever published. Owen Alstott was born and raised in Oregon. He attended a high school seminary and the novitiate at Mt. Angel Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in the Willamette Valley. He graduated from college at Mt. Angel with a BA in Philosophy in 1974. Owen also attended Willamette University for advanced studies in pipe organ and Marylhurst University where he worked toward his degree in music. In 1976 he began his career with Oregon Catholic Press, (OCP), the publisher of our Breaking Bread hymnal. He served until 1992 as music editor, editor of music publications and eventually as publisher. He is the composer of the printed musical versions of each week’s responsorial psalms, and gospel acclamations found in the hymnal. Owen Alstott moved to London England in 1992, where he founded a company that publishes and distributes religious education materials. He is married to British composer Bernadette Farrell whose works include Christ Be Our Light, and Your Words are Spirit and Life. Owen Alstott was appointed to the OCP Board of Directors in 2015. Our use of the Heritage mass begins at #885 with the Holy. The Mystery of Faith #886, Amen #889 and the Lamb of God #890.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT March 4, 2018

First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17

Through Moses, God passed on the commandments he wished all people to follow. He tells us not to worship idols or take the name of the Lord in vain. All the laws God gave to us, if followed, would ensure that we could live in peace and harmony with one another as he had planned. Second Reading: I Corinthians 1:22-25

Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ is the power and the wisdom of God. Although they claimed to possess wisdom, “God’s folly is wiser than men, and his weakness is more powerful than men.”

Gospel: John 2:13-25 Jesus went to the temple of Jerusalem to find merchants there selling sheep and doves. He knocked over their tables and drove the animals away. The merchants asked him for a sign that he was authorized to do this. He told them to “destroy this temple (referring to his body) and in three days I will raise it up.” The merchants misunderstood, and did not believe he could rebuild in three days what had taken nearly 50 years to build. Still many believed in him, after seeing the miracles he had performed.
