FEAST OF THE HOLY INNOCENTS DECEMBER 28, 2017
Celebrated on December 28th, Matthew 2: 1-18 tells this
story: Herod was “greatly troubled” when astrologers from the East came asking the whereabouts of “the newborn king of the Jews,” whose star they had seen. They were told that the Jewish Scriptures named Bethlehem as the place where the Messiah would be born. Herod cunningly told them to report back to him so that he could also “do him homage.” They found Jesus, offered him their gifts and, warned by an angel, avoided Herod on their way home. Jesus escaped to Egypt.
Herod became furious and “ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under.” The horror of the massacre and the devastation of the mothers and fathers led Matthew to quote Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah,/sobbing and loud lamentation;/Rachel weeping for her children…” (Matthew 2:18).
The Parish Office will be closed Saturday, December 23rd through Tuesday,
Dec. 26th and will reopen Wednesday, December 27th
at 9:00am.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 24, 2017
First Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16
King David plans to build a temple to honor God. But God tells Nathan the Prophet that instead he will give David rest from his enemies, and ensure that both his house and community will be protected forever. Second Reading: Romans 16:25-27
In this letter of Paul to the Romans, he explains that the gospel reveals the mystery that had been hidden for many ages. Now it has been made known to all, so that they may believe, obey, and give glory through Jesus Christ for-ever. Gospel: Luke 1:26-38
The Virgin Mary is approached by the angel Gabriel, who tells her that she has been chosen to bear the Son of God. Mary is first afraid, yet shows her unquestioning faith when she simply says, “Let it be done to me as you say.”
A CHRISTMAS CREED
I believe in Jesus Christ and in the beauty of the gospel begun in Bethlehem. I believe in the one whose spirit glorified a little town; and whose spirit still bring
music to persons all over the world, in towns both large and small. I believe in the one for whom the crowded inn could find no room, and I confess
that my heart still sometimes wants to exclude Christ from my life today.
I believe in the one who the rulers of the earth ignored and the proud could never understand; whose life was among common people, whose welcome came
from persons of hungry hearts. I believe in the one who proclaimed the love of God to be invincible:
I believe in the one whose cradle was a mother’s arms, whose modest home in Nazareth had love for its only wealth,
who looked at persons and made them see what God’s love saw in them, who by love brought sinners back to purity, and lifted human weakness up to meet
the strength of God. I confess my ever-lasting need of God: The need of forgiveness for our selfishness
And greed, the need of new life for empty souls, the need of love for hearts grown cold.
I believe in God who gives us the best of himself.
I believe in Jesus, the son of the living God, Born in Bethlehem this night, for me and for the world.
Amen.
