“For the Time Being”

He is the Way.

Follow Him through the Land of Unlikeliness;

You will see rare beasts,

And have unique adventures.

He is the Truth.

Seek Him in the Kingdom of Anxiety;

You will come to a great city that has expected

Your return for years.

I hope and pray that everyone had a wonderful Winter Break! Our classes will resume on Monday, February 26, 2018. We will continue our Lenten Journey by focusing on the three pillars of this Liturgical Season: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Many classes have been scheduled to receive Reconciliation. We thanks our beautiful Priests for always making themselves available to our Catechists and students. Our Seventh Grade classes have begun preparing for the Stations of the Cross. On Tuesday, March 20th we will be inviting the families to attend a reflection on the events of the last several hours of Jesus’ life. On Saturday, February 24th several of our volunteer Catechists joined me at the Riverview in Hastings on Hudson for the Annual Communion Breakfast. We were honored to be with the Most Reverend Gerald Walsh and Sr. Maureen Sullivan, OP. Our theme was THE CATECHIST AS A MISSIONARY DISCIPLE. There was much prayer, discussion and reflection as we shared with other parishes throughout the Archdiocese of New York. We were delighted to represent Holy Innocents Parish. We ask for your continued support and prayers as we journey through this Lenten Season. Maria Lamorgese, Director Phone 914-769-3297 ext. 1 [email protected] Looking ahead:

Another change to the liturgy during the season of Lent is the obvious omission of the Alleluia. Alleluia is a term of great joy, our singing the Alleluia is a way of participating in the angels’ worship, and a reminder that the kingdom of heaven is established on earth in the form of the church. In its place we sing an acclamation of praise. This year we are using the Lenten gospel acclamation by Christopher Walker. It is #132 in our hymnal. “Praise and honor, honor and glory, glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!” We omit the Alleluia as a kind of verbal, (and musical) fast, not to depress the mood of the liturgy but to create a sense of anticipation and even greater joy when this familiar word of praise returns when we celebrate Easter and the resurrection of our Lord. The last singing of the Alleluia has led to some unique, beautiful and interesting customs including “burying the Alleluia” dating back to the Middle Ages. Modern faith formation classes may bury an Alleluia banner somewhere on the parish grounds, or place the word in a plastic Easter egg, as part of the Easter morning Easter egg hunt. In some French churches, the children of the choir would have a mock funeral, placing the words in a small casket. In the eleventh-century a hymn, titled, Alleluia, Dolce Carmen, was written as a beautiful farewell, it has been translated under the title, Alleluia, Song of Gladness. “We do not now deserve to sing the Alleluia forever; Guilt forces us to dismiss you, O Alleluia for the time approaches in which we must weep for our sins.” The medieval bishop and writer, William Durandus (1237-1296) explained that “we part from the Alleluia as from a beloved friend, whom we have embraced many times”. Easter is five weeks away, Sunday, April 1

st, and the

Alleluia will return after its Lenten rest. We invite you to sing it with incredible flourish as an expression of our Easter joy.

On March 6th at 7PM at the Croton Library, Parishioner and Historian, Dennis Corcoran, will take part in a Panel Discussion on “The Benedict Arnold and John Andre Conspiracy” during the American Revolution. All are invited to attend.

CYO SERVICE PROJECTS UPDATES!

The 6th Grade Boys Service Project involved direct outreach to a local family in urgent need of food. A Pleasantville parent who works as a teacher reached out to this group for help. A 9 year old student in her class was going without food. The family of four, including an infant was in an immediate and severe food crisis. The team’s donations included a supermarket gift card and more than 15, fully packed bags. The items were personally delivered and brought into the home and the family was extremely grateful and appreciative. The team ensured that this family will be food secure for the next long stretch. Coach: Traymore Team Parent: Rosen The 4th Grade Boys collected and donated supplies of cheerful band-aids, fun stickers and children’s coloring books for a local Pediatric Infusion Center for their young patients. Most of the children have implanted ports which allows for drawing blood and infusing medications. It is the highlight of a child’s day, when they have a choice of fun band-aids and stickers for a job well done. The team was able to replenish hope for these children as the center was running low on their supplies. Coaches: Samoyedny & Hundzynski Project Organizer: Dispenza

Parish council members should be interested in leading or assisting our various committees including but not limited to the following: Liturgy, Communications/Public Relations, Fundraising, Spiritual Life and Social Outreach. Nominating petitions will be available in the narthex, parish hall and at Our Lady of Pompeii until Sunday, March 18th. At this time, please give prayerful consideration to volunteering as a member of the Parish Council. SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT February 25, 2018

First Reading: Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18

God ordered Abraham to take his beloved only son to Moriah and offer him as a sacrifice. Abraham built an altar and took out a knife to sacrifice his son Isaac. But God called out to him and told him of blessings that would be bestowed on him and his descendants because he had been willing to do what God had asked. Second Reading: Romans 8:31b-34

Paul reminds the people that God did not spare his only Son, but gave him up for the sake of all people. This proves God views us all as his children, and that no person can harm or condemn us because God will protect us. Gospel: Mark 9:2-10

Jesus led Peter, James and John up a high mountain, where he conversed with Elijah and Moses. A voice proclaimed ‘This is my Son, my beloved. Listen to him.” Then Jesus was alone and warned them not to tell anyone what they had seen until he had risen from the dead.
