Attending the ceremony was Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, Michigan U.S. Senator Gary Pe- ters and Paul Rogers, director of TARDEC. “They were there to witness the handover,” said Doug Hal- leaux, a public affairs officer for TARDEC. “GM tested the vehicle at Milford, just to make sure that it worked. Now that the Army has it, the vehicle will be tested in areas that will provide condi- tions similar to the kind that the Army currently operates in.” The Colorado ZH2 will be test- ed at the Army’s Fort Carson fa- cility in Colorado and its Fort Briggs facility in North Carolina, Halleaux said. “This is an important vehicle for the Army,” Halleaux said. “It is an electric drive vehicle, true. But it also produces electricity via its hydrogen fuel cell. That’s important to the Army because the modern soldier is equipped with many devices that require electric power in order to run.” Having a vehicle that can also act as a portable generator is a two-for-one win for the Army, Halleaux said. Additionally, a hy- drogen fuel-cell-powered vehicle is a silent vehicle. Given the im- portance of stealth in battle, he said, having a silent vehicle is something to be desired. The Army testing phase will take the next couple of years, Halleaux said. “What’s important to under- stand is that we don’t know if this vehicle will be practical for us,” Halleaux said. “But testing is all about learning what works, and just as importantly, what doesn’t work. “Hydrodgen fuel-cell vehicles don’t produce exhaust. They pro- duce water. That might be useful. They are silent and they don’t re- quire gasoline.” But the Army also has to find out if the system works out in the field and it has to work in a fiscal- ly responsible way. “It’s not enough that it might work, it has to work in a way that doesn’t require too much time or money,” Halleaux said. “We are guardians of the taxpayers’ mon- ey. That’s an important point for any system the Army adopts.” According to GM, the Chevro- let Colorado ZH2 stands more than 6½ feet tall and more than seven feet wide. It was built on a stretched midsize pickup chas- sis. Reinforced inside and out, the ZH2 rides on 37-inch tires and a specially modified suspen- sion that helps the vehicle climb over and descend all manner of terrain. The Colorado ZH2 features an Exportable Power Take-Off unit (EPTO) that allows the fuel cell to power activity away from the vehicle, such as remote locations where electric power may other- wise be unavailable. GM and TARDEC collaborated to develop the Colorado ZH2 from contract to concept in less than a year, said GM spokesman Alan Adler. “The speed with which innova- tive ideas can be demonstrated and assessed is why relation- GM Hydrogen-Powered Army Truck Runs Silent in Battle Freese shows off ZH2’s hyrogen-powered powertrain at GM’s Milford Proving Ground April 10. It’s probably safe to say that when people think of Ford vehi- cles, the phrase “sleeping like a baby,” isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Well, Ford has done something about that. For many new parents, there is only one guaranteed solution to putting their baby down at the end of the day – a nighttime drive that soothes, calms and eventually helps a little one nod off, said Ford spokesman John Gardiner. But that still means a disrupt- ed night for mom or dad, who re- search shows can typically ex- pect little more than five hours’ sleep a night while losing the equivalent of 44 days’ sleep in just the first year of their child’s life, Gardiner said. Help, howev- er, could soon be at hand. Ford has developed a cot that could simulate – in the comfort of a parent’s own home – the mo- tion, engine noise, and even the street lighting of those nighttime drives, Gardiner said. To all ap- pearances a regular cot, the Max Motor Dreams, comes to life us- ing a smartphone app. This enables it to record and then reproduce the comforting move- ment, lights and sounds of a particular journey. “After many years of talking to mums and dads, we know that parents of newborns are often desperate for just one good night’s sleep,” said Max Motor Dreams designer Alejandro López Bravo, of Spanish creative studio Espada y Santa Cruz. “The Max Motor Dreams could make the everyday lives of a lot of people a little bit better.” For now, the Max Motor Dreams is a one-off pilot. But fol- lowing numerous enquiries, the company is considering putting the unique cot into fullscale production, Gardiner said. Spring is here and one of thesigns is road construction.According to Warren City Engi-

neer Jim Van Havermaat, there isa major road construction proj-ect on 13 Road from Hoover tothe Edison Corridor.“The Edison Corridor is the

name we give the area where thebig power lines are located,” VanHavermaat said. “This projectstarted recently and will go forthe next couple of months. Whatwe’re doing is actually replacingsome very old water mains andbecause the mains are locatedunder 13 Mile, we’re repairingthe street as well.”This reason for this kill-two-

birds-with-one-stone move is ac-tually very interesting, VanHavermaat said. When the Mile roads were orig-

inally constructed, they were twolanes wide. One lane went eastand one went west. The watermains were built to be parallel tothe roads. But as cities like Warren grew

and traffic on the Mile roads be-came heavier, the streets werewidened and, as a result, the wa-ter mains were now under theroads.“Given the situation, it just

makes sense to repair and up-grade at the same time the watermains along 13 Mile and 13 Mileitself,” Van Havermaat said.“That project will be going on forthe next few months. We are alsoupgrading the intersection at 13Mile and Hoover. The workshould be done by late June orearly July.”Other construction projects

taking place in and around theTech Center include the repavingof 12 Mile between Van Dyke andMound Roads, Van Havermaatsaid. This is actually a countyproject. The condition of the street in

that section is terrible, VanHavermaat said. Constructionshould begin sometime after theFourth of July and the projectshould be completed by October.Another road project taking

place near the Tech Center is therepaving of Hoover Road be-tween 11 and 10 Mile.“That project has already been

bid out,” Van Havermaat said.“Construction should start byJuly and it will take severalmonths to complete.”Van Havermaat said that road

repair, especially when it’s doneon busy roads, is a great incon-venience to drivers. But giventhe condition of the roads, thework has to be done, he said.

abling silent watch capability;• Reduced acoustic and ther-

speeds via electric drive;• Low fuel consumption

across operating range;• Water by-product for field

uses.GM and TARDEC have fuel cell

development laboratories locat-ed 20 miles apart in southeastMichigan, Adler said. Most of the Colorado ZH2 was

assembled in GM’s Advanced Ve-hicle Integration facility in War-

example of GM’s engineering anddesign skill in creating an off-road vehicle relevant to a rangeof potential users,” said CharlieFreese, executive director of GMGlobal Fuel Cell Activities.“Over the next year, we expect

to learn from the Army the limitsof what a fuel cell propulsion sys-tem can do when really put tothe test.”The Colorado ZH2 contract is

GM’s second vehicle develop-ment with a U.S military branchannounced this year, Adler said.In June of 2016, the U.S. Navy

unveiled a GM fuel cell-poweredUnmanned Undersea Vehicle(UUV) that is currently in pooltesting before eventual deploy-ment.The UUV leverages GM fuel

cell technology common withthe Colorado ZH2, demonstrat-ing the flexibility to power arange of mobile and stationarydevices, something that mattersout in the field, Malleaux said.

should close by the end of thisyear, cuts a $400 million loss, andalso frees up $1 billion in capitalspending that went toward Euro-pean-centered products.GM also avoids future costs of

complying with stringent Euro-pean environmental regulations, said Stevens.

Although the U.S. auto marketslowed in the first quarter, GMexpects sales to recover and end2017 at around 17.5 million, closeto last year's record of 17.55 mil-lion, the CFO said. Stevens con-ceded that incentives such aslow-interest loans and rebatesare on the rise, but also said av-erage sale prices for GM vehiclesare rising too.Inventories grew to a 90-day

supply of cars and trucks at theend of March. That should fall to a 70-day

supply by the end of the year,Stevens said. With thousands ofnewer cars coming off leases, GMwill manage the supply by sellingthem as certified pre-owned vehi-cles and may even try to workdeals with ride-sharing compa-nies Lyft and Uber, he said.GM has the oldest crossover

SUV portfolio in the industry, forcing it to discount the vehi-cles, Stevens said. But that will change this year

with the rollout of the newChevrolet Equinox and larger

SUVs such as the GMC Acadia,Chevrolet Traverse and CadillacXT5.“As we exit this transition to

the new portfolio, we’ll see a re-covery in transaction prices withlower incentive spending as welaunch the new products,”Stevens said on a conferencecall. The company also will shut

down truck plants in the thirdquarter to prepare for the launchof a new full-size pickup truck in2018, Stevens said.

NEW YORK (AP) – Uber’s headof communications is leaving, the latest in a string of executivedepartures as the ride-hailingcompany tries to dig out from apile of troubles. In a memo to employees, CEO

Travis Kalanick called RachelWhetstone a “force of nature”who was “way ahead of the gamewhen it came to many of thechanges we needed to make as acompany.”Uber is facing accusations of

routinely tolerated sexism andsexual harassment in the work-place, as well as troubles forKalanick after a video surfaced

showing him berating a driver. The company is hiring a chief op-erating officer to help him man-age the company. Uber has alsohired former Attorney GeneralEric Holder to lead an investiga-tion into the sexism allegations.Whetstone, who joined Uber in

2015 after a decade at Google, did not give a reason for her de-parture. Her deputy, Jill Hazel-baker, is replacing her.“I am incredibly proud of the

team that we’ve built – and thatjust as when I left Google, astrong and brilliant woman willbe taking my place,” Whetstonesaid in a statement.

Finally, an upside to annoyingphone calls from solicitors. The signature growl of a Ford

Mustang has been captured andmade available as a free down-loadable ringtone, said Fordspokesman Dan Jones. In recording the sound for the

new ringtone, Jones said Fordengineers mounted micro-phones on a 2018 Mustangequipped with all-new activevalve performance exhaust. Theaudio plays the sound of the ex-haust in track mode as the car –equipped with the new available10-speed automatic transmission– races to speeds up to 155 mph.Matt Flis, Ford exhaust devel-

opment engineer, said that thenew exhaust system can bemade more exhilarating when adriver wants it to be, more sub-dued at other times.“In track mode, this car really

growls the way a Mustangshould, and the new ringtone is agreat way for fans to have funwith that,” said Flis.Active valve performance ex-

haust, available on V8-equippedMustang GT models, gives driv-ers broader control over the ex-haust system’s auditory output.Rather than basic on/off capabil-ities common on many sportscars, the new Mustang exhaustsystem uses active valves to cre-ate a wide range of sound outputbased on exhaust mode setting, engine rpm and vehicle speed.Drivers can select any of four

exhaust modes, and the activevalve exhaust system respondsby creating exhaust notes thatare smooth and linear, even dur-ing rapid acceleration, Flis said.“We created this system to

provide customers with a soundexperience that best comple-ments the exhilaration of drivingthe Mustang,” said Carl Wid-mann, Mustang chief engineer.“The total excitement is some-thing you don’t just feel, youhear.”When Mustang’s powerful V8

fires up, the active valve per-formance exhaust system de-faults to normal mode. Changingmodes lets valves in the systemmodulate the engine soundbased on careful tuning. The sig-nature start-up sound can go upand down as a driver sees fit,Jones said.

At a time when SUVs and pick-up trucks are more popular thanever, GMC has scored big with ex-perts.GMC won Kelley Blue Book’s

2017 Brand Image Award for MostRefined Brand April 11.It’s the fourth year in a rowGMC has earned the award,as it continues to earn praisefor its premium truck andSUV lineups from new vehiclebuyers, said GM spokesmanTrevor Thompkins. On March 1, Reuters reported

light trucks accounted for 62 per-cent of light vehicle sales in Feb-

ruary. In 2016, that split was 59.5percent in favor of trucks andSUVs, according to AutodataCorp. Over a full year, that shiftwould mean roughly two assem-bly plants’ worth of cars hadbeen replaced by SUVs or trucks.Brand Image Award winners

are based on consumer automo-tive perception data from KelleyBlue Book Strategic Insights’Brand Watch study. Brand Watchis an online brand and model per-ception tracking study tapping in-to more than 12,000 in-marketnew-vehicle shoppers annuallyon Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com.

The comprehensive study pro-vides insight on how shoppersidentify important factors influ-encing their purchase decisionand captures brand/model famil-iarity and loyalty among new-ve-hicle shoppers.“GMC’s ‘Professional Grade’

ideology has struck a resonantchord with consumers, and that’sreflected in car buyers visitingKelley Blue Book’s website,KBB.com, naming GMC 2017’sMost Refined Brand,” says JackNerad, executive editorial direc-tor for Kelley Blue Book.“The extra attention to design

and detail found across GMC’slineup has clearly resonated withAmerican consumers.”In previous wins, Kelley Blue

Book has acknowledged Denali,GMC’s highest expression of pre-mium vehicles, for continuing toelevate the brand’s overall per-ception among consumers,Thompkins said. Kelley BlueBook’s findings show that con-sumers recognize that GMCtrucks and SUVs pair professionalgrade capability with exceptionalfeatures and technology, he said.“Receiving the Most Refined

Brand award for a fourth consec-

utive year reflects GMC’s commit-ment to our core brand pillars,”said Duncan Aldred, vice presi-dent, Global Buick and GMC.“Consumers appreciate GMC’sability to deliver bold, capableand precisely crafted vehiclesthat fit their lifestyle.”GMC began 2017 by selling its 1

millionth Denali vehicle since in-troducing the sub-brand onYukon in 1999. Denali accountedfor 25 percent of GMC retail salesin 2016, outselling the entireproduct lines of several premiumautomakers, such as Land Rover,Jaguar and Porsche.

GMC’s Truck and SUV Lineups Win Top Marks from BuyersConsumers have shown their approval – for the fourth year in a row – of the GMC brand’s lineup of SUVs and pickup trucks, winning Kelley Blue Book’s Brand Image Award.

DETROIT (AP) – Hydrogen fuelcell cars could one day challengeelectric cars in the race for pollu-tion-free roads – but only if morestations are built to fuel them.Honda, Toyota and Hyundai

have leased a few hundred fuelcell vehicles over the past threeyears, and expect to lease wellover 1,000 this year. But for now, those leases are limited to Califor-nia, which is home to most of the34 public hydrogen fueling sta-tions in the U.S.Undaunted, automakers are in-

vesting heavily in the technology.General Motors recently suppliedthe U.S. Army with a fuel cell pick-up, and GM and Honda are collab-orating on a fuel cell system dueout by 2020. Hyundai will intro-duce a longer-range fuel cell SUVnext year.

“We’ve clearly left the scienceproject stage and the technologyis viable,” said Charles Freese, who heads GM’s fuel cell busi-ness.Like pure electric cars, fuel cell

cars run quietly and emission-free. But they have some big ad-vantages. Fuel cell cars can be re-fueled as quickly as gasoline-pow-ered cars. By contrast, it takesnine hours to fully recharge an all-electric Chevrolet Bolt using a240-volt home charger. Fuel cellscars can also travel further be-tween fill-ups.But getting those fill-ups pres-

ents the biggest obstacle. Fuelingstations cost up to $2 million tobuild, so companies have been re-luctant to build them unless morefuel cell cars are on the road. Butautomakers don’t want to buildcars that consumers can’t fuel. The U.S. Department of Energy

lists just 34 public hydrogen fuel-ing stations in the country; all butthree are in California. By com-parison, the U.S. has 15,703 pub-lic electric charging stations, which can be installed for a frac-tion of the cost of hydrogen sta-tions. There are also millions of

garages where owners can plugtheir cars in overnight. As a result, U.S. consumers

bought nearly 80,000 electric carslast year, but just 1,082 fuel cellvehicles, according to Ward-sAuto.That’s why automakers will

keep hedging their bets and offerelectric vehicles alongside hydro-gen ones.Honda began leasing the 2017

Clarity fuel cell sedan earlier thisyear; about 100 are already on theroad. At this week’s New YorkAuto Show, the company alsointroduced electric and plug-inhybrid versions of the Clarity. The plug-in hybrid can go 42

miles in electric mode before asmall gas engine kicks in, Hondasays. The all-electric Clarity cango 111 miles on a charge. Bothwill go on sale later this year.“We think going forward the

powertrain market is going to bevery diverse,” said Steve Center, vice president of the environmen-tal business development officeat American Honda.Fuel cell cars create electricity

to power the battery and motorby mixing hydrogen and oxygenin the specially treated plates thatcombine to form the fuel cellstack. The technology isn’t new. GM

introduced the first fuel cell vehi-cle, the Electrovan, in 1966. It onlyseated two; the back of the vanhoused large steel tanks of hydro-gen and oxygen. It went about 150miles between refuelings, and itshydrogen tank exploded on atleast one occasion.Advances in hydrogen storage,

fuel cell stacks and batteries haveallowed engineers to significantlyshrink those components to fitneatly inside a sedan. Oxygen isnow collected from the airthrough the grille, and hydrogenis stored in aluminum-lined, fueltanks that automatically seal inan accident to prevent leaks. Re-ducing the amount of platinumused in the stack has made fuelcell cars less expensive.Honda’s new Clarity can go 366

miles between fuelings, thelongest range in the industry. The Clarity leases for $369 per

month for 36 months. That’smore than the $354 monthly leasepayment for the Chevrolet Boltelectric. But Honda, Toyota andHyundai are all throwing in freehydrogen refueling. It costs be-tween $13 and $16 per kilogramfor hydrogen, or up to $80 to fillthe Clarity’s 5-kilogram capacity,

according to the U.S. Energy De-partment.Even with that perk, analysts

think sales of fuel cell vehicleswill be limited until more fuelingstations are built. But carmakerswill still invest in fuel cells. GM’sFreese says there are many appli-cations beyond cars, includingunmanned, deep-sea vehicles orbackup home power systems.“One of the reasons global car

companies do something like this

is they want to have a finger inthe pie. Should we suddenly haveto shift over, they want to be ableto do it,” said Jack Nerad, an exec-utive market analyst with KelleyBlue Book. The number of fueling stations

could also grow quickly if au-tomakers partner with govern-ments and energy companies, asthey have done in California. Ear-lier this year, 13 companies – in-cluding Shell and BMW – formed

a council to accelerate the adop-tion of hydrogen as a transporta-tion fuel.Heather McLaughlin of San Ra-

mon, Calif., was one of the firstcustomers to lease a 2017 Clarity. She says she prefers a fuel cell carover an electric because she canrefuel it in minutes. And one fill-up a week more than covers her50-mile daily commute to Benicia, where she serves as the city at-torney.

DETROIT (AP) – Hyundai andKia are recalling 1.4 million carsand SUVs in the U.S., Canada andSouth Korea because the enginescan fail and stall, increasing therisk of a crash. The recall covers some of the

Korean automakers’ most popu-lar models in the U.S. and Cana-da including 2013 and 2014Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUVsand Sonata midsize cars. Alsocovered are Kia Optima midsizecars from 2011 through 2014, KiaSportage SUVs from 2011through 2013 and Kia SorentoSUVs from 2012 through 2014.The South Korean recall in-

cludes Hyundai’s Grandeur andSonata sedans and Kia’s K5, K7and Sportage with engines pro-duced from 2009 to 2013. Allhave either 2-Liter or 2.4-Litergasoline engines. The U.S. en-gines were made in Hyundai’s en-gine plant in Alabama. The companies say in docu-

ments posted April 7 by the U.S.National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration that debris leftfrom manufacturing can restrictoil flow to connecting rod bear-ings. Since they are cooled byoil, the restriction can increasetemperatures and cause thebearings to wear and fail, andthe engines could stall.Owners will hear a knocking

sound from the engine that in-creases in frequency as the en-gine speed rises. They also couldget engine warning lights ontheir dashboard, Hyundaispokesman Jim Trainor said. Those with problems shouldcontact their dealers.Hyundai and Kia will notify

owners and dealers will inspectthe engines. They’ll replace theblock if needed at no cost toowners. The recall starts May 19.

subcompact SUVs, one of lastyear’s hottest segments, aredown 3 percent as demand forthe small utility vehicles appearsto be leveling off.”Rising incentives and dis-

The Novi-based automotivesupplier Preh was named a GMSupplier of the Year by GeneralMotors during its 25th annualSupplier of the Year awards cere-mony held March 31 in Orlando,Fla.“We are focused on building

positive supplier relationships, bringing new, customer-centricinnovations to GM and being theOEM of choice among suppliers,”said Steve Kiefer, GM vice presi-dent, Global Purchasing and Sup-ply Chain.“The companies we recognize

tonight not only have brought in-novation, they delivered it withthe quality our customers de-serve.”GM recognized 118 of its best

suppliers from 15 countries thathave consistently exceeded GM'sexpectations, created outstand-ing value or brought new innova-tions to the company, said Prehspokesman Barrett Kalellis. Theannouncement represented the

most suppliers GM has recog-nized since debuting the Suppli-er of the Year event in 1992. Thisis the fifth time Preh has re-ceived the award.More than half of the suppliers

were repeat winners from 2015.Winning suppliers were chosenby a global team of GM purchas-ing, engineering, quality, manu-facturing and logistics execu-tives and selected based on per-formance criteria in Product Pur-chasing, Indirect Purchasing,Customer Care and Aftersales, and Logistics, Kalellis said.“It is a great honor for us to be

among the top suppliers of GMonce again,” said Christoph Hum-mel, CEO of Preh. “We are proudof this award, because it con-firms that our commitment to in-novation and quality in the de-velopment, manufacturing andsupply of human machine inter-face systems is appreciated byone of our most important cus-tomers.”

TOKYO (AP) – Japanese auto-maker Honda said April 7 it wasrecalling 37,000 vehicles in theU.S. to check if replacement airbags contain the recalled Takatainflators that may have been in-stalled prior to the massive Taka-ta recalls last year.Honda Motor Co. said the re-

call of the front air bag inflator ofthe 2003 2-door Accord doesn’taffect its vehicles in other re-gions. No ruptures have been re-ported. The inflators made byJapanese supplier Takata Corp.are blamed in at least 16 deathsand more than 180 injuriesworldwide. The problem set offthe biggest recall in U.S. automo-

tive history, involving 42 millionvehicles. Globally, the tally ismore than 100 million. The infla-tors can explode with too muchforce, sending shrapnel spewing. The latest recall is unusual in

that Honda is trying to find 2,500inflators that were replaced dur-ing repairs, but it doesn’t knowwhere the 2,500 inflators went,so it’s recalling all of the possiblyaffected vehicles so they can bechecked. In February, Takata pleaded

guilty to concealing a deadly de-fect in millions of its air bag infla-tors. The company agreed to pay$125 million to individual victimsand $850 million to automakers.

SUVs are more popular thanever and Chevrolet has justunveiled a sporty version ofthe Tahoe and Suburban onApril 6.

“Chevrolet has continually in-vested in Tahoe and Suburban, developing models with varyingcombinations of capability, tech-nology and performance to meetthe needs of different cus-tomers,” said Sandor Piszar,Chevrolet Truck Marketing direc-tor.

“The RST is designed forcustomers who want a streetperformance look withoutsacrificing capability or refine-ment, along with the optionof increased performance aswell.”

The new special edition for theTahoe and Suburban is known asstreet-performance Rally SportTruck, or RST, said GMspokesman Phil Lienert.

The Tahoe RST will also beavailable with a new Perform-ance Package that includes a 420-hp, 6.2L V8 engine; Magnetic RideControl with performance cali-bration; and a new Hydra-Matic10L80 10-speed automatic trans-mission.

RST will be available on Tahoeand Suburban models in the fallof 2017, said Lienert. Inspiredby aftermarket trends, virtuallyall chrome trim has been elimi-nated for a street performanceappearance. Changes includebody-color grille surround anddoor handles; gloss-black grilleand mirror caps; black roof rails, window trim, badging and Chevybowties. RST also includes ex-clusive 22-inch wheels wrappedin Bridgestone P285/45R22 tires.

Available upgrades for Tahoeand Suburban RST include aBorla performance exhaust sys-tem that offers a 28 percent im-provement in exhaust flow, for a

7-10-horsepower gain at the rearwheels, Lienert said.

An available brake packagefeatures massive front red Brem-bo six-piston, fixed aluminumcalipers with brake pads clamp-ing on larger-than-stock 410 x32mm (16.1 inch x 1.3 inch) Du-ralife rotors coupled with a 84percent increase in brake padarea and a 42 percent increase inrotor area to increase systemthermal capacity.

Duralife rotors feature a hard-ened surface to reduce corro-sion and provide quieter brakingwith less vibration.

The Tahoe RST will also be of-fered with an exclusive Perform-ance Package that includes Mag-netic Ride Control with perform-ance calibration, 6.2L V8 and thenew 10L80 10-speed automatictransmission.

This is the first time Tahoewill offer the 6.2L V8, which de-livers an estimated 420 horse-power and 460 lb.-ft. of torque,Lienert said. The engine featuresthree state-of-the-art technolo-gies – direct injection, ActiveFuel Management and continu-ously variable valve timing – tomake the most of power, torqueand efficiency across a broadrange of operating conditions.

The 6.2L V8 will be paired witha new 10-speed automatic trans-mission. With smaller steps be-tween each ratio, the transmis-sion maximizes engine powerunder acceleration, Lienert said. With a wide 7.39 overall gearratio spread and lower numeri-cal top gear ratio, the transmis-sion also improves efficiency byreducing engine revolutions athighway speeds.

Based on preliminary esti-mates, the Tahoe RST Perform-ance Package will offer a towingcapacity of 8,400 pounds andthe truck will be cable of 0-60

mph acceleration in less than 6seconds.

Full performance metrics willbe announced closer to launch,Lienert said.

Magnetic Ride Control is an ac-tive suspension that “reads” theroad every millisecond, trigger-

ing damping changes in the elec-tronically controlled shock ab-sorbers in as few as 5 millisec-onds. As a result, the suspensiondelivers both improved body-mo-tion control during cornering anda more comfortable ride whilecruising, Lienert said. The new

performance calibration includ-ed in the Tahoe RST PerformancePackage increases body controlfor even higher levels of respon-siveness and comfort.

“When you want to hustle, it isincredibly fast, with significantlyhigher levels of acceleration, braking and road-holding grip,”said Eric Stanczak, chief engineerfor Chevrolet full-size trucks.“When you want to relax, it isvery refined, with exceptionalride comfort and interior quiet-ness.”

Chevrolet has been the best-selling full-size SUV brand for 42years, said Leinert. Today, Tahoeand Suburban are the top two ve-hicles in the segment, he said. They also account for 49.3 per-cent of retail sales, or nearly oneout of every two full-size SUVsAmericans bought in 2016. Tahoeand Suburban customers are alsothe most loyal owners in the seg-ment, he said, with 79 percent ofowners replacing their vehiclewith another Tahoe or Suburban.

Chevy Doubles Down on Brand’s Sporty SUVs

Wisniewski had served asCSP’s corporate controller since2013, Zitny said. He brings nearly25 years of experience in Financeto the job. Prior to joining CSP,he worked as director of Financeat GKN. Previous positions in-clude financial analyst and per-formance manager at Teksid Alu-minum; senior financial analystat Delphi and analyst at EY.

He holds a Bachelor of Sciencein Accounting and Psychology, from the University of Michigan.

“As we move to the next chap-ter with CSP as part of Teijin, Iam excited to be taking thereins,” said Rooney. “We have atremendous opportunity aheadof us as we combine the signifi-cant expertise of our two compa-nies to develop the next genera-tion of lightweight materials forour customers. We will certainlymiss Frank and Jon, but theybuilt a strong team and we’reready to take CSP into the fu-ture.”

Macher, who joined CSP in2010, played a key role in turningCSP into the successful and inno-vative Tier I supplier the compa-ny is today, Zitny said. It wasthrough his vision that CSP builtup its R&D capabilities to devel-op the award-winning, light-weighting technologies forwhich CSP is known. He led thecompany to global growth andsignificant profitability, culmi-nating in the 2017 sale of CSP toTeijin. CSP milestones achievedunder Macher’s leadership in-clude:

• The 2013 move into a newworld headquarters facility thatincludes a 29,000-square-footR&D and Prototype Centerstaffed by Ph.D. chemists, chem-ical engineers, polymer engi-

neers, materials scientists andtechnicians.

• The 2013 acquisition of a130,000-square-foot manufactur-ing and R&D facility in Pouancé,France, where CSP currentlyconducts most of its research incarbon fiber and other advancedtechnologies.

• The acquisition of fiveplants from Magna’s compositesoperations in 2014, further ex-panding CSP’s footprint to 14 fa-cilities.

• The introduction of the rev-olutionary Tough Class A (TCA)Ultra Lite material in 2014.

• The 2014 formation of a 50-50 joint venture with QingdaoVictall Railway Group in Tang-shan, China, to form CSP Victall.

“Serving as the CEO of CSP hasbeen one of the most rewardingof all of the positions I’ve held, because we’ve been able tomake such a significant impactin a relatively short period oftime,” said Macher.

“We took something that wasvery broken, and turned it into aworld-class innovator for theautomotive industry, and this issomething I will always be veryproud of. I will certainly miss theday-to-day interactions with myteam, but I know I’m leaving CSPin very capable hands as I retirefor the sixth time.”

Macher will continue on in astrategic advisory role for threemonths before stepping downfor good in June 2017.

When Smith joined CSP in2012, the company was pullingitself out of near insolvency andwas saddled with high interestdebt. It was lacking in financialdiscipline, including any stan-dardized processes or proce-dures. Smith immediately wentto work to implement standard-ized processes, including stan-

dardized reporting and KPI re-porting company-wide, and awell-defined new business quot-ing model.

Smith worked side-by-sidewith Macher and Rooney in thetransformation of CSP, and wasthe financial lead for all expan-sions, acquisitions and joint ven-tures over the past 5 years. Inaddition, he:

• Guided the company to topline growth of 18% CAGR, andEBITDA growth of 38%.

• Initiated two major refinanc-ings of the company’s debtstructure, yielding significantsavings and providing greaterflexibility for future growth.

• Implemented a number ofprocedural improvements, in-cluding a signature authority ma-trix with a focus on establishingaccountability and improved vis-ibility at all levels; a long-termstrategic planning process; en-hancements to data security, dis-aster recovery and systems re-dundancy to insure no interrup-tion of product supply to cus-tomers.

• Upgraded in-house IT talentyielding tremendous growth insystems capability and data se-curity.

“Joining the CSP executiveteam gave me the opportunity toapply my years of financial ex-pertise to a system that present-ed a number of opportunities forimprovement,” said Smith.

“It’s been a great experience towatch the company embrace theproper disciplines and subse-quently grow and prosper. As abonus, we had quite a bit of funalong the way.”

Both Macher and Smith willcontinue in their board positionswith the company’s Chinesejoint venture, CSP Victall, untiltheir terms expire.
